contentious hearing inside tennessee's capitol building is underway right now as republican state lawmakers into expel three democrats over their protest for gun control. inside the chamber and expulsion vote is set to happen very soon. also right now , violence is erupting in the middle east. dozens of rockets fired into israel from lebanon. lebanon claims israel is firing back but israel denying that relies in jerusalem and in paris , scenes of outrage cars getting smashed bottle of paintballs flying protesters clashed with police, these breaking stories and more all coming in right now to cnn news senate. these are live pictures from inch by the chamber there in tennessee of lawmakers prepare
8:02 am
for a big vote right now. potentially historic legislative session has begun in the statehouse as lawmakers prepare to vote on a resolution to expel three democratic state representatives. all three are accused of breaking house rules while calling for stricter gun control measures alongside dozens of protesters. but they did so inside the chamber. ryan young is following this story. from nashville. ryan this is a really contentious situation because we've seen throughout the day. first the protesters outside surrounding you, and suddenly they all start pushing in to the capital, but they are seriously upset over what these legislators are doing when it comes to making schools safer has fallen to. that's absolutely true. and let's talk about this year. they told me almost down to a woman because there's a lot of women here who are stressing the fact that they were here.
8:03 am
not just for these three lawmakers. they are here for the children. a lot of people who showed up here today are teachers themselves and they say they are tired of all the talk all the back and forth across this country when it comes to protecting kids in school, they say how many shootings will have to happen before someone in this country does something to stop it? so we saw thousands of people lining up and your of course, asking what happened next? they all went up to the capital. they knew it was going to take hours before they could get inside. some of them made it in. this is braving all the rain here, but they are upset that now this has turned into a conversation between democrats and republicans about these three lawmakers who could be thrown out. yes they believe that is important. but they say the focus should be on the fact that in this community, six people lost their lives to a weapon. they don't feel it should be on the streets anymore, and they want to do more to protect schools. so that's when the conversation so far. we know it's been heated on the inside. this is not a standoff there if the republicans want these three members out. they could totally vote them out this afternoon.
8:04 am
that could happen as you said. within the next hour, one of the members took to the floor to talk about the reasons why he feels they're being persecuted and this should not happen. take a listen. we are making this political statement today by trying to act like we're doing something that is not going to do anything to prevent what occurred. more police officers in schools. um yesterday passed a bill to arm teachers. this is not going to make our students safe. and i think that we owe it to these young people that thousands here who we who we try to speak for when we were silenced the thousands who gathered outside demanding that we take real action to address the crisis of easy access to military grade weapons in this state, and so with that. i must say that i cannot support this bill because this bill is a band aid. we will withhold funding. yeah that was justin jones. and you know you're looking inside the statehouse where they're having this conversation. republicans are managing these three democrats talking about. they did not follow decorum. the idea that they were not called
8:05 am
upon when they decided to take to the floor, use a bullhorn and then start making those statements and protests and that is now become the focus. when you put this in front and center sarah, there's also people in this community who are hurting who have lost loved ones. there's a school that had a door shut out. with a high powered rifle, and we're not focused on that. and that's what a lot of the protesters were telling us today that they can't believe that this conversation has shifted. in fact, in the last hour we were talking. one of the women that we talked to. the teacher says this is a distraction from what we should be talking about in terms of trying to have common sense measures to move forward. you can understand the passion here. you can understand that people are hurting and they're passionate about how they should move this forward. but right now all the focus is inside that state capital to see exactly what happens next. and will republicans move forward to do something? that of course, has not been done many times here in this state. i believe it's only been done four times since the civil war that someone has been thrown out of the state house. this could be very interesting
8:06 am
how this plays out. sarah it's happened just a couple of times since the civil war and in those times it has been criminal behavior or alleged criminal behavior. this is just about a rule of decorum. and there are a lot of protesters. i know that you've talked to that have looked at this and said decorum. we should be upset about the killing of children while they're in a place they expect to be safe. can you tell me how long this might take as the protesters have sort of gone in and are waiting to see what the result of this vote to expose gloria johnson? justin jones? and justin j. pearson. so this is what it's been explained to us. first you have some of the protesters who made it inside. you can tell the conditions outside are terrible. so some protesters who've been out here for hours have decided they're going to wait somewhere nearby to see what happens and then maybe come back and try to get out of this rain for at some point, the big question is, when will this end? we believe there are several obviously other
8:07 am
resolutions that are going on with the vote happen in the next half hour. no one seems to know exactly the timing. of course, they're discussing it right now. and then, when this happens, these people plan to well back in the hope to push lawmakers that make some sort of change there because at the end of the day if this happens or doesn't happen, the conversation still has been changed from the focus which should be gun violence. ryan young. thank you for all of that. appreciate it, okay. so we are following more breaking news right now the largest attack from lebanon and israel and more than a dozen years, israeli military officials say at least 34 rockets were fired from lebanon into israel today. officials in israel say that 25 of those were intercepted by the iron dome. we should note the idea of also says, though, that at this moment the numbers are not final. this is a major escalation in the middle east. all of this comes after days of tensions over israeli police operation. tions that played out in violent fashion at the al

aqsa mosque in jerusalem. let's go to cnn's had ask old is back with us. from jerusalem had asked. what's the latest that you're hearing this coming into you and your reporting on the damage caused by these rockets? well what we're seeing is that there has been damage caused by some of the rockets that did manage to bypass the iron dome. because as you know, the 25 of these rockets were intercepted by the iron dome. but what we're seeing images of rockets that one of them seem to have damaged a car and we do know that at least two people were injured by shrapnel, one of them while they were on the road, so it is possible that the damage was saying to the cars from somebody who was inside. we're also seeing extensive damage to what seems to be shops and i'm hearing from israeli media that one of them was actually a bank to the point that it blew out all of the glass windows. the outside trap shrapnel. you can see shrapnel marks all the way to the back side to the back wall of these offices and shops. now, today is actually a holiday in israel because it's the first day of passover, so nobody was
8:09 am
out at the shops or in their offices. that seems to be a stroke of luck that more people were not injured in these rockets that managed to fall. but as you noted, this is the largest barge of rockets from lebanon into israel, since i mean, many people are pointing to the 2006 war. between the israeli military and hezbollah in lebanon, so it is a very, very significant escalation while we've seen one off rockets being launched from lebanon into israel over the past few years, usually in response in connection to things that are happening, especially here in jerusalem at al aqsa, as we've seen over the past two days. this is a new level 34 rockets that a does not happen on a regular basis. and that sort of thing also doesn't happen likely without hezbollah, at least knowing about it. doesn't necessarily mean that hezbollah was behind. it could have been palestinian militias because the area where this rockets came from, there's a lot of palestinian refugee camps in there. but the big question, of course, will be what will be the israeli military response earlier, we were reporting that lebanese media was saying israeli military was responding with artillery, but the israeli military is denying that saying that they will decide when and
8:10 am
how they will respond. they will respond just in the last few minutes, the israeli security cabinet was meeting to discuss what they're responsible look like, and i think we need to keep a close eye. on that now. i don't think that either hezbollah nor the israelis want an escalation to the point of what they saw in 2006, but there will be some sort of response. and will this potentially cycle into something that just goes out of control and turns into something like what? we saw massive war of 2006. but keep in mind the power of the artillery that hezbollah has the power of the israeli military will see untold scores of damage and lives lost. this has the potential to really turn into one of the biggest wars, potentially that israel or lebanon has seen in years. badass thank you. so much for your reporting, sticking close and bringing honestly, by the minute you're bringing in some new stuff for us. i really appreciate it. we've got much more we want to talk about with regard to this how this could spiral. what this means in this moment, joining us right now is aaron david miller, longtime state department middle east
8:11 am
negotiator and a senior fellow at the carnegie endowment. it's great to see you, aaron, i thank you for coming in. what do you thinking as you are seeing this play out 34 rockets from lebanon in to israel. today. it's clearly an escalation cape and thanks for having me, but i think it says it right. the reality is since 2006 the prospects of his serious escalation, which could morph into a major war between israel and hezbollah. the last time, of course, in the summer of oh, six, both sides of south to avoid it. this is a very curious issue. maybe palestinian groups fired those rockets as follows in control that area it's hard to believe that his power his bullet had no for knowledge of it. palestinian groups clearly are supporting hamas is rockets from gaza into israel over the last 48 hours, and both groups are supporting, um palestinians in their confrontation with israeli police on the harem of sharif, the temple mount. we always knew that ramadan and passover when religious

sensitivities are high would be a period and now particularly with an israeli government. the most extreme clearly and fundamentalists in the history of the state. you do have the makings both with respect to lebanon and on the palestinian front, uh, major escalation, and it's occurring at a time all those extraordinary demonstrations in the history of the state of israel right now israel has a quote, fire defense minister unquote you have going on who is clearly still in his office, being briefed and apparently instructing the israeli chief of staff, even though benjamin netanyahu was about to, i mean his security cabinet has not yet officially decided what to do about his status. i wanted to ask you about that, erin because what you're just talking about earlier. what was it just last week? is that the news out of israel that we were covering where these mass protests over? netanyahu has moved to overhaul the judiciary also, as you're talking about leading to the defense minister uh, being pushed out. how does how does if
8:13 am
i'm calling him domestic political issues? how does how does this how does that complicate what we're seeing unfolding now? i mean, i think had these demonstrations go on. i think they will persist after the recess if the prime minister decides to push through this judicial reform, an effort to fundamentally alter the nature of israel's democratic system. clearly for the first time. also in the israeli defense forces, you've seen extraordinary demonstrations and protests. there is great concern that this can affect morale and israeli military readiness, particularly since israel hasn't fought a ground war in some time there. reservists are very, very critical both to israeli air force operations and two israeli intelligence. my gut tells me frankly, that you know middle east wars don't happen by accident. they're usually preceded by relatively long trail of actions. actions actions, actions and reactions. i don't see this morphine into a

8:20 am
on the streets of paris. melissa, bring us up to speak. what it is usually about nightfall that you tend to see that direct confrontation that has been such a characteristic of these marches for the last couple of weeks. today it began a lot earlier. in fact, right here, just behind me the scene of the images you were showing the moments ago, mythical parisian restaurant attacks and part of it burns earlier on and you can see every year john demars passage through here. it will hit all the way to the riot police as they line all of the side streets along the marches planned route to try and keep it as calm as they can. but it is generally when we get to the woods, the end of the march to his destination point that you see some of the most angry confrontations between protesters and police. i did the fact that we've seen them this early on an indication this crowd, although we're expecting it to be slightly smaller than some of the very massive demonstrations we've seen these last couple of weeks, much more determined to get that kind of direct confrontation to make
8:21 am
their anger felt and their frustration node really what we've seen these last few weeks , these protests getting more violent as a result of the government's decision to forces pension reforms through parliament. without a vote. it is now almost certain to become a lawyer, constitutional hurdles but these protests will continue . in fact, the unions have said already today they intended very unified way to carry on making their voices heard it to keep people on streets of paris. by the end of the day. we should have an idea what day next week the protests will come. yeah melissa bell. so you know, we are looking at pictures now of a small barricade on fire in the middle of the street. and law enforcement on the move, trying to push the protesters back away from where this is taking place again. as you pointed out, these protests are over pension reform , an effort to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 do it without a parliamentary vote. that is. what brought has brought people to the streets
8:22 am
for 11 straight days, millions of people on some occasions, though, you say today fewer bicycles on fire right there. a smaller group of protesters, melissa but you say, perhaps more determined for violence as the evening hours approach. what more can you tell us about that? that's right, john those kinds of little fires that you'll see all along the protest liner where the protesters managed to successfully take on the looking at over here. many more of the unions, the peaceful protesters . it has been on the edges that you see those skirmishes. they have set up barricades a light. there has been a lot of the trask still been on the streets of paris strikes that gets satellite they get charged by the police and the aim of these much more violent demonstrators . the black bloc kout. that kind of confrontation, and so you see it all along the margins through to the end. by the time it gets to his destination, we expect
8:23 am
perhaps some of you angriest. it was far less protesters we've been interviewing in the last couple of weeks, john and they've been saying because they feel that the result of the people who are here today to continue protesting is there. they really intend to make these as violent as they can. they don't feel the government. and they want that much more extras . angry noise to make itself heard as they try and take on the police. one of the difficulties for the police at this stage is trying to keep the security of these marches relatively intact without allowing the protestors supposed to much damage, but without on the other hand, the police themselves getting into into some of the accusations allegations of excessive violence in the scene over the course of the last couple of weeks. really the streets of paris for the last two weeks during every time there's a protest like this, much more successfully by that group of extremist supporters, extremism demonstrators into a sort of direct battle between the security forces on one
8:24 am
demonstrators on the other side and again you see a small fire burning right there behind a few of the law enforcement the other end of that picture, which was focused on just a moment ago with it. bit of a larger fire, where some of those flames seemed to be billowing. certainly the smoke was coming up before melissa talk to us about these blazes that are apparently intentionally said has there been a great deal of damage or are they mostly contain? no. we have seen a lot of damage cause i think the real moment when these protests and much more violent was lost on the 23rd of march on monday, there was 1000 fires across carry along, marsh and i give you an idea. how dramatic work. since then, we've seen time of demonstrators try and create fires as they try and take on the police. they're burning things like rubbish. they're burning. climb exits their

israel are also add that 25 of those were intercepted by the iron dome. the idea just tweeted that it is now conducting a security assessment of what happened much more to come on that sarah thank you, kate. we're also following breaking news here in the united states. tennessee lawmakers are preparing to expel three democratic state representatives . all three are accused of breaking house rules while calling for stricter gun control measures alongside dozens of protesters. right now lawmakers . you can hear them. they're debating other bills that have to do with school shootings. none of those, however, include gun control. and just moments ago we heard from one of the democratic lawmakers who's going to expel gloria johnson. we also heard from this lawmaker facing expulsion. we don't need a solution that says if you don't lock the door, get someone with the gun. we need a solution that says people shouldn't be going to schools and two houses and
8:32 am
two neighborhoods with weapons of war. that is from someone who may end up being expelled. cnn's ryan young has been following this throughout. he is there in nashville just outside of this legislative session. that's going on right now. ryan what have you been seeing and hearing from people because there were thousands of protesters gathered and now have pushed into the statehouse there. absolutely want to be in the statehouse because they want to be heard a lot of people who showed up here, sarah, our teachers or parents who have kids in school, and they're concerned that nothing is being done to address the situation that's going on. yes what's happening with these lawmakers is top of mind for a lot of people, but the parents who were here feel stressed about the idea that they could have this legislative session happened without any long term solutions to the problems they see affecting. people in schools all across america, actually talked to a woman who said she
8:33 am
had dent ified as a republican. and she understands why lawmakers might want to use this as an advantage to get rid of these three members. but she says, even though she believes in the second amendment, what she wants to see is changed when it comes to protecting kids in school. when you look on the inside here, you can hear the passion of the protesters have shown up. they braved the rain. they've been standing out here for hours because they want their voices heard. they want something that happened, and they believe lawmakers are using this other distractions with these three members do not really have a substantive conversation about what they want to see stepping forward. i'm sarah in the last half hour since we last saw each other a lot more state troopers have appeared from the bottom of the building and have surrounded the state capital to add another sort of layer and you can see some of the men in green who are here to sort of protect the outside. i can tell you there's been no pushing or shoving, and no one has sort of gotten angry at each other and then no screaming. in that sense, except for the protesters wanting their voices heard. there's even a band here. that's been playing
8:34 am
music because they said they want to drown out the lawmakers on the inside until their voices are heard. and something has changed. you can just feel that passion as it reverberates through the state capitol area. lawmakers certainly can hear what is going on right outside their doors. we've also noticed as we've been watching this as the speeches go on. these are about different issues, not the expulsion for right now, but we've been seeing in that there are some protesters. some parents, some teachers, some students who have made their way into the chamber are sitting there with their signs. so that they are not only going to be heard on the outside of the chamber but seen on the inside. do you have any sense of how long this expulsion vote might take? i understand that the resolutions are one after the other 63 64 65. yeah and that has been the big question. so far, even some of the protesters arrived not knowing how long this could take. um we were told
8:35 am
that people had planned to be here all day. and they expected maybe that the republicans would stretch this out throughout the afternoon. maybe to have some of the protesters leave on top of all that. you have people who say they believe that these three may be expelled, no matter what, because this is a power move and in the game of politics when those three politicians decided to play to the crowd and use the bull horn and they broke the quorum. they gave the opportunity and the advantage to the republicans, so they fully believe that this could happen before the end of the afternoon. when you talk to other folks, they say, look, how sad is this that before all the folks are buried, who were shot and killed last week are have their final memorial that they're going to have the experience this sort of situation where we're not focused on that as a community, and that is part of the conversation that we've been having with some of the people who have come out here and have been talking so passionately about some of the changes they would like to see with better doors with better red flag laws

breaking all morning. tense faceoff between police and protesters there that is turned violent. at times. we've seen smoke bombs. we've seen tear gas . we've seen a cafe set on fire briefly, not to mention broken glass and all kinds of debris. this is the 11th straight day of protests in paris as people there demonstrate against pension reform. the government of emmanuel macron wants to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64. he's going to do it. it seems without parliamentary improve, allow, and now we've had 11 straight days of these protests, and today and really over the last few days, they have tended toward the violent with these direct confrontations between police and protesters. let's go, right. to melissa bell , who is on the streets of paris . melissa you were telling us that as nighttime approaches, these protests become even more tense or have a tendency to what
8:42 am
are you seeing as we're what about an hour or two hours away from nighttime where you are? that's right. it won't be very long. in fact, the marches occasionally stopping but slowly getting towards attending to go, which is the pleasure ahead. we've done the lion's share of the march so far, and it is up ahead again, john that we're seeing again. the police charging places where. fires have been started where protesters have had to try and lighter barricades, and there's riot police tried to clear the area now what we've seen over the course of the last couple of weeks as the intensity of the violence at the head of the protesters has increased, is also much more confrontational approach from the police. there are some 45 enquiries underway into allegations of police violence. and so this crystallization of all that anger that you're seeing once again today at the head of this march, really an expression on one hand of the difficulty the
8:43 am
police are having and trying to keep these events come in a way that remains constitutional and by which they abide by their own standards of conduct, and that minority are very determined usually far left protesters determined to turn what had been fairly peaceful marches into much angrier confrontation with the police. really their aim is that these things get so violent and the country is so paralyzed. by the strikes that the government forced the negotiating table. i have to say john, even as they become more determined to see this movement through and carry on till the government backs down, we're hearing from the government of more and more determined sense that they intend to push this performed through whatever happens, it's a question of who's going to decide to call off the hostilities first. no sign of that. this afternoon as we head towards because you said you were once again there are fires being lit as you see the most couple of weeks, paving stones being thrown. and a lot of tear gas used by riot police as they try and clear the protesters away, john and we've
8:44 am
seen some of those flames. we've seen some of the smoke bombs, melissa, you say the government . neither the government nor the protesters show any signs of backing down. you might crawl the french president kate baldwin, just reminding me he's in beijing. he's been meeting with the chinese leader xi jinping. he's not even there. does the government give you a sense that he is monitoring these protests? he's not in the country right now. and that, of course, only confirms the impression a lot of people have what we've seen on the signpost once again. today is so much of the anger really focused on him. the talks that took place last night between the prime minister and the unions, but it is the representation of emmanuel macron presidency that has been so controversial as you say, john, not in the country. today. he's played so large on the world stage. the french people who come out not just in this protest movement, but we saw during the yellow vest. there's a lot of anger at the reforms he's been carrying out inside the country is a remarkably
8:45 am
unpopular president. with a lot of people that you'll see here. the members of the trade unions, the workers who feel they'll be penalized by his reforms, and one of the impressions that people give in, you'll see it again on the sign post here today. they wanted their slogans is that he is the president of the rich. this is a protest movement that is being fueled by anger of inflation. the cost of living the fact that people are struggling to make ends meet. they feel at the time when they have a president far too focused on what's happening in the outside world and far too focused on trying to reform the economy. these people are saying they're very happy with the model they had. and what they want is for people to keep on retiring with a very generous state pensions they've had, essentially since the end of world war two when the social system was created here. alright melissa bell for us on the streets in paris as nighttime does approach melissa, please, as i keep saying, stay safe and keep us posted. thank you. we will continue to watch what's going on on the streets of paris, katelyn polantz breaking

8:51 am
escalation. in the region, and this also comes after days of tensions over israeli police operations at the alaska mosque in jerusalem. cnn's daskal back with us on the phone now from israel had asked. what's the latest? you're picking up from there? yeah katelyn polantz use the road to get to the north to the scene of where these rockets fell. as you noted, 34 rockets were launched by somebody in southern lebanon towards northwest, uh towards northwest israel. 25 of them were intercepted. but some of them as we are seeing did fall into populated areas and we are seeing damage caused to things like cars as well as shops. we're seeing what seems to be windows completely blown out. from certain shops and restaurants in northern israel so still damaged but luckily, only two people have been lightly injured by shrapnel according to its really emergency services, but still there is a lot of questions, for
8:52 am
example, who launch these rockets loaded they exactly come from and who was ultimately responsible line of food, then will the israeli military potentially target in response? we haven't seen a barrage of rockets like these since 2000. section there was a major war between hezbollah and the israeli military now from actually that we've been speaking to in the last few hours. these are you know, former general. these are former security officials who say that neither israel nor hezbollah it wants to see this escalate into something bigger, but it has the potential easily. you know, one thing goes wrong. something happens and then you can easily turn that into a full blown war . so right now we're waiting to see what will the fall is really military who will they specifically target? we haven't as far as i understand. steve an official response from hezbollah , or claim of responsibility specifically from any sort of militant group. although the place where these rockets were launched from is from an area where there's a lot of
8:53 am
palestinian refugee camps, so it's very possible that palestinian militants were behind this, but he's really military. i have nothing happens in southern lebanon without hezbollah's at least casting approval. so will be a big question whether the israeli military target has bola in addition to ever else they may target as a result of this barrage of rocket just watching as you're talking. we're looking at that video had asked of the iron dome, intercepting some of those rockets at school now on the road ahead to see some of the damage where these rockets hit. thank you so much. let's go over to the white house right now. cnn's mj lee is standing by their mj. what do you hear? are you getting any reaction? any response from white house officials from the national security council about this dangerous unfolding situation? okay we are actually just getting some information from an nsc spokesperson out, so i just want to let you know what kind of reaction the scenes of violence we are seeing and have been seeing over the last several hours. what kind of reaction that is prompting
8:54 am
within the administration. first of all, the sce is making very clear right now that they are extremely concerned by the violence that they're seeing coming from all sides and that they would like to urge both sides to try to d. escalate the situation. we are also being told that the president has been fully briefed, continuing, of course to be briefed on the situation and that the u. s. ambassador ambassador tom knight and others throughout the federal government that they that they continue to be in regular dialogue with israeli officials, and that that is going to continue. of course we saw the state department saying yesterday that they are firmly behind the idea. of preserving the historic status quo of holy sites in jerusalem. so that's something else that we should expect us officials to continue to emphasize throughout the day as the situation develops, and the white house the nsc is also
8:55 am
saying that they condemn the launch of any rockets at israel . so again, this is a very tense situation of fast moving situation. that u. s officials are watching very, very closely. i should also note we do, of course, expect a white house press briefing within the next hour or so. so that is when we should also be getting some new reaction from nsc spokesperson john kirby. this is a situation again even yesterday at the white house briefing, this came up and again the u. s has position has been that they're monitoring the situation closely , but that they would really like all sides involved. uh involved to de escalate the situation as weekly as possible. kate. yeah some critical moments hours ahead as that as that security assessments underway in israel will be very important to hear from the white house on this in this moment, m j thank you very much for jumping up so quickly for us, sara. we have seen huge protests in paris. there are rockets being traded back and forth between lebanon
