and democratic norms. silencing those who disagree with us is a sign of weakness, not strength, and it won't lead to progress. we're keeping a close eye on the violence flaring in israel, gaza and now lebanon as well. the lebanese foreign ministry just announced it will file an official complaint to the un security council after israeli strikes hit southern lebanon. israel says it was going after palestinian militants there and in gaza, where the palestinian health ministry said the israeli strikes damage to children's hospital. israel says it was responding to a barrage of rocket attacks from hamas. this comes two days after israeli police stormed the al aqsa mosque. in jerusalem, one of islam's holiest sites. all these worshippers returned on thursday . the fighting is happening as the region's three major religions and meant to be celebrating ramadan, passover and easter. cnn scott mclean is monitoring the lebanese reaction live from beirut. let's begin with our salma abdelaziz, who is

with us from jerusalem. someone tell us more about the reaction of israel to what's being called the biggest rock itself, folks salvo since 2006. i think really, to break this down max and bianca. we have to start at the compound, known as temple mount to jews, known as the noble sanctuary to muslims that flashpoint holy site that is often the start and end of so many tensions in this region, and you have to take it back to wednesday. of course, when locks a mosque was twice raided by israeli police footage of one of those overnight raid shows israeli police hitting worshippers hitting people inside with batons with the butts of their right. rifles those images as you can imagine , or extremely inflammatory to the muslim world, particularly as it is the holy month of ramadan, in condemnation quickly poured in as well as rockets in response rockets coming from gaza, about a dozen of them on wednesday, as well as rockets coming from southern lebanon, a

barrage of over 30 the largest barrage seen from that region since the conflict since the war in 2006, now authorities then went on here in israel to say that they would respond, prime minister benjamin netanyahu saying that he would. he vowed to respond to those attacks, and that's exactly what we saw take place. israeli defense forces say they struck at sites inside gaza. they say those were military sites. weapons sites. the palestinian health ministry , for its part, says that the hospital was hit in that attack , and there was no death toll. but the people inside of course, disturbed by that. attack. and, of course, retaliatory strikes on southern lebanon as well. now it's important to note here that israeli authorities are not blaming hizbollah, which is, of course, the organization, the political military organization that operates dominates southern lebanon. israeli authorities are instead blaming other

palestinian factions hamas or islamic jihad for launching attacks from southern lebanon. hezbollah for its part, has neither claimed or denied responsibility, has condemned the raid on al aqsa mosque. wednesday but now you've seen these very measured that's important to note very measured no death toll here from gaza from southern lebanon from from israel. no death toll very measured tip for tat, and the question is, does it fizzle out ? or does it escalate into answer that question? we're going to have to go back to temple mount back to the noble sanctuary today where there's going to be friday prayer in less than a couple of hours. time does that go ahead as planned? does that go on without incident that could bring down tension? is that could deescalate the situation but if yet again, we do see more escalation there more incidences there that could feed fuel to this fire. very tense, very worrying. we're going to shift to the lebanese capital scott mclean is there. what are authorities saying about these rockets going in both directions

across the border? hey, max. look, the israelis promised to respond, and it seems like they have respond. the thing is that israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu promised to extract a heavy price from israel's enemies and at least on the lebanese side. the strikes didn't really do that much damage, at least based on the video that we have seen thus far, which shows that there were some homes. some cars that were affected. there was an electrical transformer. that was affected and there was a massive crater left in a farmer's field in a pretty rural area. little farming community farmers there said that they woke up to these explosions that damaged some of their homes. but as far as we can tell so far there have been no one injured. no one no casualties, either. someone mentioned the israelis are blaming palestinian militant groups that are operating within lebanon, and there are several of them and they do have some
1:13 am
military power in this part of their in the southern part of the country, especially around some of the palestinian refugee camps there. israel says that of the strikes that it carried out there were 10 of them. it was aiming at hamas linked tunnels and production sites there, and it seems that israel is being extremely careful here to make sure that they are only going after targets that they say are laid to palestinian militant groups, rather than salma mentioned hezbollah because that they see as a much, much bigger threat. in fact, it's been something that they've been worried about for. quite some time. the israeli assessment is that there could be hundreds, maybe thousands of rockets that hezbollah has hidden in southern lebanon inside private residences, all of them within range of actually hitting israeli soil. hezbollah someone mentioned neither confirmed nor denied but previously for context here. it's leader hassan nasrallah has said that look,

according to pro publicar thomas has gone on several luxury trips paid for by republican mega donor harlan crow, but this was not previously disclosed. cnn's joan biskupic explains why this puts the court what's integrity in jeopardy? this latest episode involving the lavish trips that justice thomas took, but did not disclose touches directly on concerns about the supreme court's integrity and why the justices do not have a formal code of ethics. these kinds of off bench activities have been cropping up more and more, but this report is probably one of the most staggering propublica after an extensive investigation found that justice thomas has benefited from travel and lodging at these lush locales provided by an indian private individual. on a scale like no other supreme court. justice has harlan crow is a major republican donor who has an interest in reshaping the judiciary at his expense. thomas and his wife, jenny, took trips to indonesia, new zealand and
1:31 am
other places across the world. these trips were not disclosed, and in fact remained largely secret. until now, there's some ambiguity about what justice time it should have disclosed. under federal law. the justices currently put only minimal amounts of information on their annual financial disclosure forms. they also have no no formal ethics code or wait for the public to lodge complaints, ethics complaints against the justices and have them resolved in some way, the justices say that they abide by rules for lower court judges, but it's very difficult for the public to know if they do. in 2011 the last time chief justice john roberts addressed the ethics issue, he said, essentially trust us. we follow rules that lower court judges use. he said he had confidence in all of his colleagues, but he has been essentially silent since then, even though these questionable activities keep coming to public light. neither chief justice john roberts, no joint nor justice. thomas responded to our questions after the propublica report. earlier this year, we

learned of extensive efforts undertaken by thomas's wife, jenny, to try to reverse the 2020 election results that landed joe biden in the white house. justice thomas did not recuse himself from election related cases. step back and consider how much concentrated power over american lives rest with the supreme court. these nine justices public approval of the court has been dropping, particularly since it reversed nearly a half century of precedent in the june dobbs decision that ruling reverse roe v. wade 1973 ruling that had declared a cast tuchel right to abortion. harlan crow said that in a statement first given to propublica, and then to cnn that he and his other guests did not discuss cases with thomas, but consider the access that these corporate and conservative leaders had to justice thomas and also consider the appearance that justices could be vulnerable to such gifts of travel and hospitality. unreported grit gifts as they were. maybe the this latest

episode will lead the hike our court to finally adopt some formal rules, or at least to respond to questions and be more transparent about their off bench behavior. john biskupic, cnn washington. a new round of nationwide protests in france against the government's pension reforms escalated into clashes and scuffles with police on thursday, the french interior minister says more than 150 police officers were injured, some of them seriously. authorities detained more than 100 people across the country. nearly 600,000 people took part in the protests. this was the scene as protesters targeted a well known financial company in paris for its ties to private pension funds. cnn senior producer saskia van dorn joins us from paris images we saw last night looked really dramatic. how did it turn out, saskia? yes well, max, you know there was a big turnout yesterday has been lower than previous protests,
1:34 am
but half a million people is significant. and so now france's book i'm used to these kind of scenes, and yesterday the protest began peacefully. it was almost festive. and then of course he scuffles did break out we have seen in, you know the previous weeks. this kind of radical fringe get bigger and their aim really is to take on the police, but as a really want to kind of underline that as a whole, the protests have been rather peaceful. and so now we need to talk about how this will affect mackerel. what happens next? so next week? there'll be more protests on thursday and then on friday, crucially, the constitutional council will rule if this pension reform is green lit, whether it's unconstitutional. we expect this to be just a formality, but well have to wait and see. so the question is, if it is green lit, and then the protest, perhaps died down. what does macron do next? his popularity is really low at the moment. the last time it was this low was during the yellow vest protests. so what can he do to win back the trust
1:35 am
and to get that popularity back ? take a listen to what the head of the cgt union had to say about macron. today wanting to force through this reform creates chaos. macron was the president of the rich, and now he is the president of chaos. and so i think that the wisdom of the constitutional council should be to do with the head of state obviously refuses to do that is to say to consider that in order to move on for the country to start to run against serenely reform must be withdrawn. there was no other way out than that. so macron, maybe in china right now, but this really is the biggest challenge facing his presidency and they will continue to protest until they feel that they are heard. so the question is will mac macron? listen, max? yes so this is a big question. where does he go from here? um even if he does overcome this last hurdle of and pushing this reform through. well i think
1:36 am
that's the problem. he hasn't really offered any kind of solution or exit to the crisis. you know, the last time his popularity was this low was during the yellow vest protests in 2018 and back then he kind of organized these great town halls to listen to people voice. their concerns voiced every vince's, but he hasn't suggested anything this time around. and what all the trade unions are asking for. is really just for the reform to, you know, be put out the window. the head of the cfdt trade union was just saying this morning that they will respect what the constitutional council says, but that that will not stop them from protesting. max saskia. paris. thank you so much for that. britain's military intelligence believes that russian attacks are gaining more traction in back mud. ukrainian military released this video showing troops fighting house to house in damaged buildings, but british intelligence says it believes russian troops have quote regained some momentum there have likely advanced into

french president emmanuel macron is wrapping up a three day visit to china. during the trip, he and president xi jinping struck a deal and nuclear and wind energy. they also discussed solutions to end the war in ukraine. mr macron is hoping for a breakthrough and counting on president xi to reason with russia. will you get that? let's ask cnn's mark stewart joins us live from tokyo. what do you think, mark? hi there, max. good morning, bianca. let's keep in mind from the start. this was described as a diplomatic visit. not so much an opportunity for france to sculpt china. but among the headlines there we are reporting, according to a french diplomatic source president she has agreed to talk to talk to vladimir zelensky. when the time is right, so let's perhaps seen as a as a moment of optimism. but make no mistake. there are distinct differences between these two nations and their approach to the war in ukraine.

president macron is blaming russia for disrupting the peace in europe. on the other hand, we have china and president xi trying to take a hands off neutral approach yet not going far, according to some to condemn russia for the invasion . we also have seen diplomatic ties and economic ties between between china and russia actually strengthened during this time of war so far. big takeaway. lots of lots of words but no substantial action from this meeting. that would be a game changer in the direction of this conflict. maxim bianca. and mark has ever taiwan is still a point of friction, especially right now, as u. s. lawmakers are actually arriving in taipei with a not particularly subtle message for china. indeed as we see several u. s lawmakers, a bipartisan group of lawmakers have been spending time in taiwan. their message is going

really difficult day for tiger woods during his opening round at the masters, a 74 or two overpass score would have fallen well short of his expectations, and given that it was such a glorious day. here it was more than 80 degrees sunshine from start to finish. given that the weather is going to change, it's going to be wetter and much much cooler. tiger perhaps knows that he's missed his chance. i feel like i drove it good. i just didn't do the job i need to do to get the ball close. today was the opportunity time to get the ball get around under par, and i didn't do that today. uh most of the guys are going low today. this is this was the day to do it. hopefully tomorrow i'll be a little bit better little bit sharper and my way through it, and this is going to be a an interesting finished the tournament. with the weather coming in. if i can just kind of hang in there, maybe kind of my way back. hopefully it will be positive towards the end. you know, talking. woods hasn't missed the cut at augusta since
