8:01 am
is the dramatic ousting of two state lawmakers in tennessee? just the beginning? and what does this really mean for the fight over gun reform? these stories and more right here on cnn news, central. a major retaliatory strike in the middle east israeli forces launching airstrikes overnight, which they say hit palestinian militant targets in lebanon and gaza. these strikes are in response to the dozens of rockets launched from southern lebanon into israel yesterday. it is the most intense violence at the israeli lebanese border since 2006 and we're learning more about the two israeli women who were killed in a shooting on the west bank road this morning. the two young women were sisters. they were just 16 years old and 20 years old. their mother was also in the car with them. she is in critical condition. at this hour , cnn's had asked. gold is near
8:02 am
the israel lebanon border, and cnn's fred pleitgen is near. the israel border with gaza had as i want to start with you has there been some reaction from lebanon today after the airstrikes? well as sarah. there has been no retaliatory rockets launched from lebanon into israel after those israeli airstrikes that happened in the very early hours of this morning, the israeli military saying that they were targeting what they took pains to say we're palestinian militant targets in the lebanese security source telling cnn that these targets were mostly open areas where militias were hope. we're holding weapons, and so i think it's a clear message being sent that they were targeting mostly open areas so that there were militant targets. and that they are not specifically targeting has blocked because of course, any sort of confrontation with hezbollah could become a much bigger war. more similar to what we saw in 2006, and we're hearing from both lebanese government officials as well. israeli military officials that they want to de escalate the
8:03 am
situation. they don't want to see anything further, so it is notable situation here up north by the lebanese border is still very tense. the airspace is still closed, but life goes on as normal. the residents here have not been told. to stay close to shelter so still a very potentially volatile situation. and also, we should keep an eye on the next couple of hours. the leader of hezbollah hassan estrella, is expected to give a speech. so far, hezbollah has not taken responsibility for these rockets that were launched, although the israeli military will say nothing happens in southern lebanon without hezbollah's at least tacit approval. so be very interesting to see what the hezbollah leader has to say about the events that have taken place over the last few days. sarah called there in israel on the israel lebanon border. we now go to fred pleitgen, who is on close to the israel gaza border. can you give us some sense? fred of what is happening where you are? hmm. well it's also an extremely tense situation down here further
8:04 am
south at the border between israel and gaza. in fact, we pan over there. you can see that we're actually really close to the border. beyond those fortifications that back there is already gaza and one of the things that i'm hearing as i stand here, sara israeli drones or what appeared to be israeli drones flying overhead the entire time and that just gives you an indication on how high and how high an alert the israelis are. at this point in time, as again, the israelis say that right now the city you ation remains extremely volatile here on the ground. there have, of course, been those israeli strikes that took place overnight on what the israelis say with some tunnel infrastructure, some research and development facilities as they put it for hamas to make rockets, for instance, but then also some launching areas as well. nevertheless a spokesman for the israeli defense forces told me earlier that the israelis don't want all of this to further escalate. here's what he said. we want to de escalate . i mean, there's a very, very sensitive weekend ahead with
8:05 am
passover, ramadan and easter, all aligning, and we're looking for a hoping for a quiet weekend. although we had another attack the right after the prayers and the jerusalem in the jordan valley, but we look we're looking to deescalate. that was lieutenant colonel richard hashed of the israeli defense forces. the palestinians for their side are condemning the israeli strikes that took place here overnight, sara hamas, saying that they will hold israel accountable. and the palestinian ministry of health said that during those strikes that took place by the israelis that a pediatric hospital was also hit. it's unclear whether or not there were any casualties. however we do get the sense here from both sides on the ground that neither side really wants to escalate the situation. nevertheless, after what's been going going on the past couple of days. of course, as you can imagine, there's still a lot of tension in the air, and you can really feel that down here at that border between gaza and israel, sarah fred pleitgen. thank you so
8:06 am
much. and thank you. also to hadas gold. we have been on either side of the israel gaza border. fred and i and for him to say that this is really tense is significant. katelyn polantz talk more about this. joining me right now is ian bremmer. he is the president and founder of the asia eurasia group. it's great to see you, ian. let's start with you heard fred had that conversation with the spokesman for the i d f earlier in the show and the idea of spokesman saying today we want to deescalate. what do you make of that? what is a pretty clear message? well we haven't seen this kind of activity across the israel lebanon border in almost 20 years. 2006 you know you've got 10,000 u. n observers slash peacekeepers there. both sides have wanted to keep the border pretty quiet. so i think the surprise here is the fact that you've seen missile strikes. this is not from the occupied territories. this is directly from lebanon. it's hard to imagine that you'd see that many missile strikes without hezbollah being aware and giving their at least tacit approval so
8:07 am
that that's the surprise, but i mean, you know our is it going to be over in terms of just these one? back and forth? we don't know the answer that what we i do know is that israel has been through unprecedented domestic turmoil. ask you which how does that fit? how does this fit in the context? how does it complicate the domestic turmoil that is going on the protests that we have seen over netanyahu's attempt and proposal to overhaul the judiciary? how does that fit in the context of what we're seeing in complicated? well, what we know is that there is a lot of anger in the region with the nature of this far right wing government slash coalition. we know that inside israel changing the judiciary. it to an incredible amount of internal dissent. now that the domestic threat to israel is far greater than the international threat. if you think about the military balance of power, it's kind of like the way we think of the united
8:08 am
states and, ultimately not china, not russia. it's the damage we do to ourselves. and so if you are hezbollah or hamas , and you see that weakness and vulnerability, you might be more willing to power on a little bit right now. they'd love to see the back of not yeah, really great perspective in comparison there. i also want to ask you about the other. what we've also been seeing play out in in france. we saw these protests, people taking to the streets and some of the clashing with police yesterday was playing out on our show. they're continuing in paris. it sounds like they're going to continue next week as well, taking over the train station, briefly taking over at least kind of storming the offices of blackrock yesterday, which was wild scenes. what does macron's not macron can do it? not even in france, right? want to get to that in a second, but where do you see this going? because these reforms are moving ahead. he's he's used the loophole. he doesn't look like he's going to make any changes. that's right. i mean, what we're doing here is moving the pension age from 62 to 64 would still be
8:09 am
among the lower ages for retirement for the advanced national democracies. the french do not care. they're angry about it. they're out on the streets. having said that the level of disruption the numbers that we've seen in the low hundreds of thousands compared to much higher a couple of weeks ago, the levels of police getting injured in the dozens, as opposed to a few 100 a couple weeks ago. i mean, none of this is happy, but in the context of france, which really does have a very strong culture of out in the street and organization, i think we're towards at the end of this interesting, so also, this is also a week that we saw nato gain a new new member with finland. we have president dolinsky going to poland for the first time since russia invaded ukraine. macron in beijing pressing g to bring russia to its senses is what we've heard from there. but also then putin trying to blame the united states for the war in ukraine hardly knew no, that's any week, right macron being in in china
8:10 am
and speaking with g is one of the most important things that happened this week in the context of all of what we're looking at with ukraine. why i'm so glad you didn't mention taiwan because everyone's talking about that, and it's an overwrought headline. the big headline is the fact that people are increasingly going to beijing. it's the french president with a lot of ceos. it's ursula vanderlaan. find and then both saying we'd like you to be more engaged in diplomacy push putin a little bit more euro central figure here that's very different from the united states. europeans nato all growing together in every way on russia, ukraine, she jinping in putting out that 10 point peace plan as as he had 12 point peace plan, as he's called it what he calls a peace plan that the ukrainians would never accept. the americans wouldn't accept. it's a bit more central right now. former president ma of taiwan has just spent the week in mainland china. the iranians and the saudis just made a return trip to china. they're the ones engaging in trying to
8:11 am
get a peace plan there. even though you're starting asking about israel, lebanon, the bigger moves right now in the middle east are actually being driven more by xi jinping. it's interesting that she is driving more geopolitical headlines today than any other major leader on the global stage, and that's not something the americans are going to be ultimately. happy about? absolutely not. it's great to see you. and thanks for coming in john his job is risk. ian bremmer is job is risk. he makes me fearful. every time i see him, try not to make me feel less safe, and that's why they took away my chair. i see that that's what's going on. other things we're gonna take for you. it's a great view. looking down on you guys their new this morning to tennessee democrats expelled from office say they will be back at the capital on monday, even though they are out of jobs. hours after the republican led house voted on their expulsions, the state legislators website shows their seats are now vacant this all comes after these lawmakers broke chamber rules to join protesters calling for gun safety representatives justin pearson and justin jones. they were both expelled. but
8:12 am
representative gloria johnson, who also protested with them, and his white was fair. cnn's ryan young live for us in nashville. we've been talking about these democrats, two out of the three expelled ryan. what are republicans who drove this train saying this morning? well as we've been talking to republicans, they've been telling us look, they believe these two broke the rules and that they needed to be put out. look this conversation is quite interesting, especially since the fact that two members justin pearson, justin jones, are now stars across the country, especially after it pretty much went viral with their words yesterday on the floor, justin jones speaking passionately on the floor, basically pointing out how members are going after him for procedural moment. this is a break of decorum and in the house where they very rarely expel members. people were surprised by what happened. look in just the last half hour as well. we've had the black congressional congress of
8:13 am
tennessee give a statement about what they saw yesterday and how they feel about how the state is moving forward. take a lesson. yesterday. it looked like a jim crow era trial. where we saw two black men. fighting for their careers fighting for the reputations. fight for their political lives. the scene. i was so disheartening as we were walking specifically when we were walking representative jones out of the chamber. many of us were fighting back tears. and when we went back into the chamber, many volunteers broke. there are people crying all across this floor. yesterday we saw a dying as well outside on the floor as members who were here to talk about gun violence were very upset about what they saw happen. the republican party has also put out a statement, they said, if elected, if they come back, and we will serve their constituents and the tennessee house of representatives. we hope they
8:14 am
will act as thousands have who have come before them. with respect for institutions, their fellow colleagues and the seat they hold. we look forward to continuing to defend the voices of all tennessee ins can tell you there's been some question about what will happen on monday. when everyone returns back here. we've been told there's been plans for further protests. i'm just talking to some of the folks who are walking around this area today. they are surprised by how this all went down, especially since it seems to be split down racial lines. they call it a black guy for the state, something they've never seen before. this conversation will continue, john . all this played out on tv. as you saw. we were on your show yesterday, and that was the part that some people were actually happy for that this was able to be played out in the form that everyone could watch and see for themselves exactly what happened yesterday here in tennessee in real time will be watching again on monday when they come back, ryan young, great to have you on terrific reporting. thank you. very much. sarah still ahead. adult film actress stormy daniels says former president trump's alleged crimes involving her are not worthy of

8:24 am
like this, but she said something i thought that was significant, she said. i told the truth, and now she's demanding that donald trump tell the truth about what happened. not only between them, but with those payments. thank you so much live for from us for us from washington, d. c. i'll get it out right soon. kate. and this just in supreme court. supreme court justice clarence thomas has now issued a statement the first comment from thomas or the supreme court after the report by propublica laying out how justice thomas and his wife went on many trips over the years paid for by his friend and big republican donor , harlan crown and importantly, did not disclose that in any disclosures. ariana vogue is back with us with more on the statement on what is the justice saying now? right you're absolutely right. the first time we hear from him after the release of that bombshell report that really detailed over the
8:25 am
years that he took these trips to places like new zealand, indonesia on private yachts, private jets never disclosed it , and it was all paid for by this mega republican donor named harlan crow. i'm going to read you the statement, and it's kind of long, but keep in mind. we do not usually hear statement like this from clarence thomas. he said. harlan and cathy crowe are among our dearest friends and we have been friends for over 25 years as friends do. we have joined them on a number of family trips during the more than a quarter center. we have known them early in my tenure at the court, i sought guidance from my colleagues and others in the judiciary and was advised that this sort of personal hospitality from close personal friends who did not have business before the court was not re portable. i have endeavored to follow that counsel throughout my tenure and have always sought to comply with the disclosure guidelines. these guidelines are now being changed as the committee of the judicial conference responsible
8:26 am
for financial disclosures for the entire federal just judiciary. just this past month announced new guidance and it is , of course, my intent to follow this guidance in the future. what's interesting about that statement is he wants to make clear that harlan crow had no business before the court. he wanted to highlight that but as you know, this comes, this story comes as the court itself is under this harsh spotlight. so many people are beginning to think that it's beginning to look like another political branch after we've had those contentious confirmation hearings of late and as the justices have been more and more on those hot button issues dividing along these familiar ideological lines, so this comes at a time thomas wanted to respond very quickly. and he's trying to explain why he didn't report these trips before those ethics rules were changed. and as you said it is, is rare to hear a statement from one of the

justices in responding to a news reporter. specially that's out. there is an important in full statement coming from justice, thomas right. here are an thank you so much for jumping on to bring us that jumping. alright thanks, katelyn polantz. desantis tan, but they're not taking all the blame who they say is responsible. and happening now with the vatican. pope francis presided over mass on good friday, but he will not be present at another event tonight. we are live from rome. yeah, but. i brought in ensure max proteinin with 30 g of protn . those who triried me felt more energy and just two weeks i'll take that. max. protein with 30 g of protein, one g of sugar and nutrients for immune help. one teaspoon of potassium iodide science. i think that's carolina . right, let's go go in the

federal reserve's year long rate hiking campaign to cool inflation. ok let's talk about afghanistan right now, nearly two years after american troops were pulled out of afghanistan, the biden administration is admitting some mistakes were made, but also putting blame on the former administration, the trump administration for that chaotic withdrawal. cnn's kylie atwood has more on this report. kylie what more what more are you seeing in this? what is an important report and also what is going to come from it? yes okay. what the white house put out yesterday was a report on the key decisions and challenges surrounding the afghanistan withdrawal, and it really focuses heavily on the decisions that were actually made by president trump, which they say severely constrained how president biden was able to execute the withdrawal and some of the things that president trump did during his tenure were strike that deal with the taliban that agreed to getting the united states completely out
8:34 am
of afghanistan. stand they also cut the number of us troops that were in the country by a large number during the trump administration, and the third thing that trump did was to really focus in on not sharing information with the biden administration during the transition period from trump to biden. now there are two lessons learned that the white house in this document cites one of those is more assertive communication that was needed around the time of destabilizing event and also prioritizing evacuations from situations like this, but they don't exactly say that they regret exactly when they withdrew from the embassy in kabul. and it's important to note that when nsc's john kirby yesterday was asked if president biden takes full responsibility for the execution of this withdrawal. here's what he said. commander in chief. and uh, he
8:35 am
absolutely has responsibility for the operations that are men and women conducting the orders that he gives, and he continues to believe that the order to withdraw from afghanistan was the right one. katelyn polantz did its own after action report , and it has far more findings and recommendations in it. 34 of those recommendations, then this white house document that was put out yesterday has in it so there are some questions about you know how they collected the information from that state department after action report and the pentagon after action report and synthesize that into this 10 page document that was put out yesterday, and we should also note that. the state department after action report that was completed a year department officials here in the building are concerned that they haven't seen the findings from
8:36 am
that review. and yesterday the secretary of state held a town hall here at the department. he took questions about the review , and he summarized some of the findings. but there's still officials who are frustrated that they just still don't know what lessons were learned by the department as a result of this chaotic withdrawal. katelyn polantz for bringing it to us, and that's definitely something that republicans have promised they were going to be following up on as they now majority in the house. they are already beginning to ask questions and hold hearings on this subject. right joining us now is retired brigadier general mark kimmitt. he is a former assistant secretary of state for political military affairs under president george w. bush general always great to see you. how accurate how helpful this report from the white house. well i don't think it was very helpful for a number of reasons. first of all, the president had accepted responsibility for what happened on the ground, but this report tries to absolve him and frankly, i don't think that he was well served by this report
8:37 am

candidly. i don't think the lessons learned from iraq were learned very well. in the strong capable evacuation we did from, uh, iraq. the subsequent collapse of iraqi military and the value that came when we put more troops back into iraq. in 2014, it almost seems like that was played out in afghanistan, which tells me that those behaviors were not changed from those lessons learned. you mentioned classified documents are classified part of this report. it made me think about what we are now learning this morning. on social media pertaining to ukraine. there has been this alleged leak of classified documents or documents that may be from us intelligence about iraq and a possible offensive coming up. how damaging is the release of information like this? i suppose whether it's real or not. well
8:39 am
first of all, i think you remember 20 years ago when a reporter from another channel got thrown out of iraq for divulging upcoming military operations. candidly you put soldiers on the ground at risk. you give a significant advantage to the enemy, and the overall success of that are offensive may be at risk. i think that the people that leaked that information should be held accountable and candidly. i think the media organization should be very careful about what they decide to print or announced, knowing that that is classified information that puts people's lives at risk. there is some thinking that maybe it isn't even real. it's just russian disinformation. the russians once again using social media. to spread the idea that there are things leaking. i mean, who do you think is even winning the intelligence battle when it comes to ukraine? well, i think it's very clear that the that the western coalition is winning the information battle

upsetting. a california dermatologist has been indicted by a grand jury for allegedly poisoning her husband with liquid drain cleaner. her attorney says she will plead not guilty, he says the woman's husband engineered the events to take advantage of her in divorce court. cnn national correspondent camilla bernal is joining us now from los angeles. good to see you, camilla. can you walk us through what happened because apparently there's some video or images of her actually doing this allegedly yes. so good to see you, sarah. and yes, there is video. we have not seen it. they have not made it public, but we have seen the screen grabs. so the husband, dr jack chan, also a physician, says that essentially his wife was trying to poison and kill him. so he got suspicious but cameras all over the house, and he says he has at least three incidents where her his wife was trying to poison him in the court documents. it says that there was a lemonade that was covered
8:46 am
with plastic wrap. and so what this doctor is saying is that his wife took the drain out from under the sink. he removed the covering and then placed the self the cellophane back into it , and then put the drain. oh right back under the kitchen sink. so he says there are multiple incidents where she did this took the drain. oh put it into his hot lemonade and then put it back. that's a lot of the images. that you're seeing here from the house. he also says that he had to go to the doctor because of all of this and says that he was diagnosed with stomach ulcers after he drank this lemonade now she was arrested. he is now or she is now facing three counts of poisoning and one count of domestic abuse. and now what the defense attorney here is saying is that emily you is not guilty . she will plead not guilty and
8:47 am
says that this is all a scheme essentially to try to win in divorce court. so he says, you have to look at the context here and see that this was a troubled marriage and that this is a very high stakes divorce. so with the defense attorney is saying is that dr jack chen essentially orchestrated this whole situation by putting the cameras up because he says that the house had an ant problem and that essentially they were using the drano and the lemonade as bait to kill the ants. so he says that instead of calling 911 he called his or his divorce lawyer, and so there's a, he said. she said situation here. but of course, all of it is troubling and we'll have to see what happens. but if she is convicted, she could face up to eight years and eight months in prison. sarah you know, i thought we were done with this poisoning thing that we just this year, there was a colorado dentist accused of poisoning his wife to death by putting stuff

nasa is now calling a possible runaway black hole that the hubble telescope is now seeing, though it's invisible. cnn's tom foreman with the details here, tom what's going on happy friday . good news happy friday. this is an extraordinary phenomenon that nasa scientists say they've never seen before. and of course , everyone's very excited about this. what you're looking at, right here is an artist depiction of what's happening to the left the thing down there in the corner, that's this giant supermassive black hole that is blasting through space at an extraordinary speed. what you see at the far right the little light space up there is sort of a coalescence. of light that seems to be related to what you see in the middle, which is stars that are being created by the compression of gas in front of this black hole because moving so fast and then as the gas comes around the back side and has been heated it forms stars normally would just gobble them all up, but to put it in

limit and the very interesting thing about this. they found it by accident, john they were looking at images from the hubble space telescope, and when they were looking at it, they noticed this little weird streak out in space there. they thought, initially that this was just some sort of an artifact on the camera, not the case. instead they found a phenomenon like we've never seen before. tom foreman. thank you for helping us through this. thank you for explaining this so well have a great weekend. neither of you are ever allowed anywhere near me when i'm about to read a joke like this again. you can't do that. okay but just to be for the person who wrote that the press release from that amazing they have to be from a child of the eighties because listen to this just short line rather than gobbling up stars ahead of it like a cosmic pac man. i'm like who is writing this stuff? it's so good. is this good? or is this evil? i still tom foreman did not answer that question, supermassive. i mean, i think
