12:01 pm
here in the cnn newsroom i'm fredricka whitfield in new york , and today's jobs report revealed a slight cool down in the labor market. employers added 236,000 jobs last month, the figure that missed economists expectations and sit significantly below the number we saw the last two months. the unemployment rate, meantime, dropped to 3.5% a new cnn poll found half of americans say their personal financial situation is worse than it was a year ago. and the president of the nation's largest bank exclusively, telling cnn that the threat of a recession still looms following the recent banking crisis. has this banking crisis even though you think it's almost over which i'm really glad to hear, though. increased chances of a recession here. yes. but i look at like it's not definitive. it's just like another weight on the scale . people say it's like raising rates, another 50 basis points or something like that. we are seeing people reduce lending a little bit. cut back a little
12:02 pm
bit. pull back a little bit. it won't necessarily forced recession, but it is recessionary. cnn chief white house correspondent phil mattingly joining me right now. so phil, what is the president, saying about today's report? you know, fred white house officials made clear this is a complex moment in the u. s economy. it has really been since the pandemic and as the country is trying to come out of the pandemic when they look at this jobs report when the president but also his economic team, look at this jobs report. they actually see the deceleration and jobs growth as a positive. and while that seems a little bit paradoxical, let me explain. they need some cooling. why do they need some cooling in the u. s economy? well what's been the biggest economic issue for the better part of a year. it has been inflation, which has also started to decelerate, but they needed to decelerate more in order for the federal reserve to pull back on those rapid rate increases. so the president, saying it is a good report, acknowledging that there is certainly more work to do at this point in time. but also trying to draw a very clear contrast saying in his
12:03 pm
statement, extreme maga republicans in congress, on the other hand, compared to the administration's work are threatening to wreak havoc on our economy. with the debt limit brinksmanship there extreme agenda would send the unprecedented investments we've made here in america, along with the jobs that come with it overseas, so white house officials and the president making very clear that yes, there are certainly concerns and potential dark clouds ahead in the u. s economy, although, but they believe the recovery has been very robust, particularly when you look at the labor force participation rate. but you compare that to what republicans are proposing, and they think voters or at least politically, it's on their side. hmm. and then tell us more about this new cnn poll that says most americans are not feeling too good about the economy. yeah this is the contrast to what i just said about what the administration thinks americans may be thinking right now. and i think it also underscores, though, in all seriousness why white house officials? why the president why his team have been so consistent on trying to raise the contrast when you look at the latest cnn polling, only 29%
12:04 pm
of americans feel good about where the economy is right now. here is the very low bar from last fall. it's actually seven points better than what it was last fall. that is not necessarily a bar that only clearing by seven points put you in a great position on but it is the reality in this moment, and the reason why that's problematic politically is like most elections, like most election cycles, most important issue in our poll by far for americans was the economy so seeing some positive growth in terms of how people are feeling people are generally still feeling not great about where things stand a lot of uncertainty over the course of the last couple of weeks, fred, but i think it underscores why you see the president out constantly talking about his legislative wins out in the country. they think that will have an effect and they needed to have an effect. all right. we'll see phil mattingly at the white house. thanks so much. all right. so what do these numbers mean for the nation's economic outlook? let's ask catherine rampell, cnn economics and political commentator and washington post opinion columnists. great to see you in person. finally all right. so what is your reaction to what
12:05 pm
jpmorgan chase ceo diamond said just how much trouble might the economy b? n? i think we don't know for sure at this point, the jobs report that came out today was actually pretty good. it was a slowdown at the lowest amount of job growth per month in a little over two years, but it's still a totally respectable report. it's kind of what the fed is looking for. the problem is a lot has happened in the last month. right we've had these banking failures. we don't know the full effect of those going forward. how much will regional banks around the country pull back lending and how might that affect how much businesses expand and hire or shrink their payrolls? for that matter, so we don't entirely know what the future holds. i mean, that's that's always the story with the economy. um but this jobs report in and of itself had some good things going for it. it's just what's not on the job support that i'm worried about. the president remains optimistic. but what do you think about what he has to say? in terms of you know the gop lawmakers this back and forth over? you know the debt limit that all of this is
12:06 pm
impacting the outlook. i am very worried about the dead limit. i have been worried about the debt limit for months. i've been writing about it for months. i think that markets have not adequately priced in the risk that is still there. i think that a lot of market participants think that always been through this brinksmanship before they were always able to resolve it. yes, there were some bad moments in 2011 and 2013. and that was unpleasant and scary, but they've learned their lesson. i think that's the wrong takeaway. in fact, if anything, the republican party has gotten nuttier since then. speaker mccarthy has a much narrower majority this time around, which means that he has to appease every fringe element of his party and i don't know how he's going to do that. so i'm very concerned about the debt limit, either that we default. deliberately which would be incredibly stupid or accidentally, which i think is quite possible. oh my gosh, that's that's nerve wracking, so a very low unemployment rate that seems like something everyone should celebrate. but
12:07 pm
why does there remain this reticence? this worry, you know , it's a been a puzzle for several months now, why is it that we have unemployment at near record lows, in fact, for some subgroups? black americans , for example, a record low unemployment level. why is it that you have a job market that looks so strong and yet a public a set of consumers who look so dour who looks so pessimistic, particularly when asked to evaluate their finances, and i think there are a few things going on here. one is that, of course, even if you have a job, your wages are not keeping up with the cost of living. that is especially true, in fact for workers who are at the lower end of the income ladder, it looks like their wages are rising a lot in percentage terms, but they're still not keeping up. how quickly their expenses are rising. i think it's partly that it's sort of a psychological tax have always having to do price shopping and go to multiple grocery stores and triangulate to different gas stations because there's so much uncertainty about prices, and it's the lingering uncertainty about where the economy is headed. all of that is weighing
12:08 pm
on consumers. very exhausting for consumers. alright catherine rampell, good to see you. thanks so much and have a great holiday weekend. vice president kamala harris is set to travel to nashville this hour to meet with the two black state lawmakers who were expelled from the general assembly after they protested in favor of gun control on the statehouse floor . the third legislator who was not expelled, will also be meeting with the vice president , and we just heard from the black caucus of state legislators. its chairman, calling the proceedings a kangaroo court. the world saw the options. i don't have to say a word about the fact that our two young african american brothers were unfairly prosecuted. and information evidence introduced inappropriately. but they handled themselves like true champions. it looked like a jim crow era trial. where we saw two black men. fighting for their
12:09 pm
careers fighting for the reputations. fight for their political lives. they expelled. lawmakers are vowing to continue their fight for gun reform. a third representative gloria johnson, you see right there, who took part in the protest survived the expulsion vote. joining me right now are cnn political commentator bakari sellers and cnn senior political analyst ron brownstein. good to see both of you. you know, first i do want to get both of your reactions. to what everyone witnessed in the tennessee house yesterday. the car you first. well, i think you saw injustice , but it's not anything we haven't seen before. in this country. we go back to 1966 when my uncle julian bond was refused to be seated in his georgia state sentences or statehouse seats. we see we've seen this before. but those two young men,
12:10 pm
they stood up. they were eloquent. they were passionate and what we saw were their white colleagues attempt to shut them up. get them down until the young negro boys. they had to stay in their place, but we will not tolerate that type of injustice and thats why the country now faces his ire on the state of tennessee. ron. well look, i think what happened in tennessee yesterday was the most egregious example of a trend that has been gathering speed over the last several years. across roughly two dozen red states and what we are seeing in state after state is a republican coalition using its control of statewide power statewide power that is rooted in their dominance of non urban and predominantly white areas to roll back a wide array of rights and civil birdies in the states , uh lgbtq rights, abortion rights, voting rights, whole range of issues and in the
12:11 pm
process, preempting the ability of voters in their largest metros, which are more diverse and more blue, leaning to set their own course i mean, forcing from office expelling from office. ah two young black men from the this the state's two biggest cities is, i think the most dramatic example of what we are seeing in state after state , where republicans again through their dominance of non urban areas, predominantly white areas are trying to override the ability of local governments in more diverse communities to make their own decisions. you know fred, tennessee 85. of the citizens of the residents above 65, or white 40% of the citizens younger than 18 are non white. and you saw that collision regeneration is very clearly on the floor this week, but bacary so glaring that it was to, um, save the job of gloria johnson. i mean, she was just on with us last hour and, you know, she
12:12 pm
gave great praise to pearson and jones, their eloquence, their poise, the power of their voice and the generation. asian how for a very long time she's worked alongside them, and even she is perplexed as to why her job was saved. but then i wonder , too, um, with this moment as the nation reflects on what was witnessed yesterday, do you see in any way these tennessee republicans feeling regret embarrassment, reconsidering their actions yesterday. no not not whatsoever. i mean, you know this is extreme action, but it is seen to have it has already backfired, right? i mean, these young men have been elevated. their voice has been elevated through their example. and what universally is. you know people, people are universally aghast at what they witnessed. the car won't be outraged, because what we've learned is that that type
12:13 pm
of outrage is what sells the ability to be able to tell someone to stay in their place is what sales and no they will not be outraged. they will not have any shame. in fact, they probably see themselves as winners. but what ron's stated is so true. the age difference. the generational difference the fact that young people are on the side of what's just what's right, particularly in the great state of tennessee is beginning to show them through. and so when you look at what happened yesterday, and you look at gloria johnson, who, by the way, is an outstanding allied to the movement. outstanding allied of freedom and justice. you're starting to see this country pushback on fascism, pushback on racism, pushback on injustice. and that's why these voices that they attempted to expel they did nothing but put them on a higher pedestal. hmm ron, is this a microcosm of, um, a consequence and action that comes with the supermajority? tennessee is not the only state right now. you know, with this supermajority. there are others, um, that maybe
12:14 pm
exercising or thinking about exercising the very same thing. yeah look, absolutely fred. i mean, like i said, there are about two dozen states or republicans have unified control of government and you see a very similar agenda advancing across all of them, right? i mean loosening restrictions on gun ownership and permit let's carry restricting abortion rights restricting voting rights. restricting lgbtq rights censoring what teachers can say in the classroom, making it easier to ban books. and in all of these states, in essence, what you see is the republican coalition moving to lock into law. the values and priorities of their predominantly white, predominantly non urban predominantly christian coalition of supporters before the demographic change that's underway in many of these states has the potential to change the balance of power in the states. that demographic they have. you know, i said that what the republican legislatures are doing in places like texas and georgia and florida and tennessee is they are stacking
12:15 pm
sandbags against the rising tide of demographic change, but no one should underestimate how powerful those sandbags are i mean, this demographic change is real. a majority of people turning 18 and many of these states every year, our kids of color, but the gerrymandering, the voter restrictions and other barriers that are being put in place means that this coalition that is now running these states can remain in power, potentially for a very long time, even as they do things that most of the state opposes. like six week. abortion bans permit, let's carry and denying red flag loss. all right. we'll have to leave it there for now, gentlemen, bakari sellers ron desantis. there are so many resonating things that came from pearson and jones yesterday one in particular from jones, saying, we asked for a ban on assault weapons and you respond with assault on democracy. those messages resonating today. thank you so much, gentlemen. alright we're also following this breaking news right now there are reports of an attack in tel aviv will take you to israel

12:21 pm
just based on these initial reports again, one kicked 11 killed rather, six wounded in these reports of a vehicle hitting pedestrians along that promenade again. this is a highly sensitive time in the region. you have multiple holidays that are coinciding ramadan is taking place. passover is taking place. easter is taking place. and, of course, the larger context of this is this huge escalation this massive escalation in recent days, all of it being driven the catalyst being the raid on wednesday of al aqsa mosque by israeli police that was responded to with condemnation from the muslim world, but also rockets being fired from southern israel. the largest barrage seen from that region. since the 2006 warren rockets coming in from gaza, so you can only imagine that this attack again breaking news. we're just getting the details, but that is just going to ramp up. tensions ramped up fears at an extremely
12:22 pm
sensitive time in this region again so far, the israeli foreign ministry saying one killed, six wounded a vehicle involved in the attack. those victims pedestrians in that very busy thoroughfare again promenade in televisa, right along that shoreline. you would expect that there has been businesses were closed were shut down for passover. but still, of course, people out and about this is a time for families to get together. this will be shocking, horrifying, heartbreaking news and you can expect at the scene right now. you have emergency services rushing to help rushing to get to those wounded, rushing to take people to hospital. this is going to be extremely difficult news tonight again, with the passover holiday taking place we are waiting to find out more. terrible alright, salma abdelaziz, thank you so much. alright and new information today in the stabbing death of cash app founder bob lee, we're getting our first look at surveillance footage showing lee's final moments and because
12:23 pm
the video is graphic, we're only showing this still image. but in the full surveillance footage obtained by the daily mail, leah seen walking alone gripping his side with one hand and his cell phone in the other, leaving a trail of blood behind him. lee had been stabbed multiple times early tuesday morning. friends veronica miracles in san francisco. what more we're learning. well fredricka. if police do have leads, they are not sharing that information. they're keeping everything about this investigation very tight, so in terms of the circumstances around his death, why it happened if there's a suspect or any suspects that they're looking at a remote that information is not being released. and of course, all of that, keeping it so tight has renewed fears and anger in san francisco. people just very scared and saying that it is not a safe place to live, the san francisco police chief said. last night. it is too early to say if this was a targeted
12:24 pm
attack or a random attack at a community meeting last night, they tried to dispel some of those fears that community members or having take a listen. our homicide investigators are working tirelessly on this case and unfortunately, there's a lot going on. there is evidence that we found that i can't. talk about because we don't want to. jeopardize this case. and i know that's really hard for people because they want to know this is a very high profile incident. i'm confident that we're going to have a good resolution to this case and city leaders and police certainly recognize san francisco has its fair share of problems between homelessness, property crime, according to fbi data from 2020. the property crime rate here is three times that of new york city, but they point to data around the murder rate. they say that it is far lower than some other large cities. they also say that
12:25 pm
overall violent crime is relatively low compared to its high in 2013 is up 7% last year. another 6% so far this year. of course, none of these statistics really make a difference for those who knew and loved lee. they just want answers, and so far right now, no answers really to share for those who lovely fredricka more questions than answers. all right. thank you so much, veronica miracle. all right, and now to southern california, where dermatologist is now facing multiple felony charges and accusations of poisoning her husband with a toxic liquid drain cleaner, her lawyer says she didn't do it and that the events seen here captured by a hidden camera were engineered by her husband to take advantage of her in divorce court, cnn's community bernal joining us now with more on all of this, camila hey, fred. so the dermatologists husband, jack chen, who is actually also a physician, says that he believes
12:26 pm
his wife was trying to poison and kill him. this was all in documents that we actually reviewed and in these documents , he says that he started noticing a chemical taste in his hot lemonade. that's when he got suspicious and put the cameras in the house. he says that there are at least three different incidents where he sees his wife allegedly trying to poison him. she would get that drain out from underneath the sink poured into her. to his lemonade and then put that drain o back underneath the sink. he says he had to go to the doctor and was diagnosed with two stomach ulcers. she eventually was arrested and she is now facing three counts of poisoning. one count of domestic battery. now she plans to plead not guilty. that's according to her attorney. i spoke to that attorney and he says that this was all orchestrated in order to win in divorce court. what he says here is that the house had a known ant problem and that they used to try to bait and kill these ants with the lemonade and the drain. oh, so the defense attorney saying that
12:27 pm
dr chen essentially would have known if he was drinking that drain o because of how strong that chemical taste is, how it smells. he says the injuries are not consistent, and he says he didn't call 911. instead he went to his divorce attorney. so again, it's kind of a, he said. she said situation it is obviously very serious because she has been indicted. and if she is found guilty, she could face a sentence of eight years and eight months. fred wow. all right, quite the array of sort of details. camilo bernal, thanks so much. thanks alright. so how did screenshots of what appears to be classified documents about ukraine end up on social media what the pentagon is learning straight ahead. you're doing business in an app driven multi cloud world. that's why you choose vm ware with flexible multi cloud services that enable digital innovation and enterprise control helps you keep your

12:33 pm
the israeli authorities. and of course, right now, this is still very fresh. they're sort of trying to still piece together. what exactly happened there, but they appeared initially to be talking about two separate incidents where they were speaking about a ramming incident and also a shooting incident. it appears as though possibly that is referring to the same incident, but sort of different parts of it. it appears as though there was a driver who ran several people on that promenade. we are now hearing that a 30 year old man was killed in that ramming and several people have been taken to hospitals in the area, some of them like conditions, some of them in moderate conditions. there were there was talk of some severely injured people in that what the israelis called attack as well with the israelis are saying at this point in time is that the person who was at the wheel of the car that ran and those people and which later overturned that that person has been quote. neutralized now it's not exactly clear what that means. but it certainly seems as though at least for now the danger in that area the israelis believe appears to be over at
12:34 pm
least the immediate danger. nevertheless of course, right now there are a lot of first responders who are on the scene. there's a lot of police on the scene there as well, not only trying to make sense of what's going on. but certainly, of course, also trying to make sure that that area is secured as well. obviously fredricka all of this coming at a time of very, very high tensions. as we did have those israeli strikes throughout the course of the last night in gaza and in south lebanon and attack today that happened in the west bank, killing two british israeli women whose car the israelis say it was shot at and then crashed . the mother of those two women severely injured in that incident as well, so as you can see, a very tense atmosphere were at the same time. the israelis and all the others who have been involved in. what's been going on here in the past couple of days are trying to stop this from boiling over and becoming something even worse. fredricka alright, horrible chain of events. fred pleitgen. thank you so much. the pentagon is now investigating apparent
12:35 pm
leak of classified u. s and nato military information about ukraine. attention is now turning on how these documents were uploaded to social media. cnn's natasha bertrand has new reporting on all of this, natasha, what are you learning? yes, fredricka. so the pentagon says that it is aware of these social media reports that appear to show these classified documents that came from the u. s. and nato that detail information about us training and us equipment being provided to the ukrainians in advance of their counter offensive there. now it is not clear at this point. how many of these documents have been released online and the pentagon has not given us any more indication on how these documents actually ended up there. that is part of what they're looking at right now. but look one of the things that they are telling. telling us is that they are cautioning that some of these documents while largely authentic, we are told, do appear to have been doctored in one such document that was reviewed by cnn. for example, there is an original document that was posted online
12:36 pm
that appears to show the accurate pentagon assessment of about 35 to 45,000 russians killed in action and another one that has been circulating on russian telegram channels that appears to show that that number being a lot lower around 32,000 russian russians killed in action so the pentagon really cautioning and officials cautioning that while these documents do appear largely authentic, and it is a very concerning league, some of them appear to have been doctored. we should note that the iranians are pushing back on the idea that any of these documents reveal sensitive information about ukrainian military plans with one senior official in the president's office president's alinsky's office. saying that they are disinformation operation by the russians. now we have not confirmed that independently. but the pentagon clearly giving this a very close look, and they're very concerned about what appears to be a leak of very, very sensitive and classified information. fredricka alright, very worrisome. natasha bertrand, thanks so much. house republican leaders are feeling the pain of

12:42 pm
are you learning? yeah well, house republicans are struggling to pass even simple messaging bills, which does not bode well for their ability to handle must pass items like raising the debt ceiling or funding the government. they did narrowly passed a parents bill of rights that was something that was the signature piece of legislation, but it only passed because of 10 , democratic absences and very intense whipping effort behind the scenes. and republicans are still struggling to deliver another key promises, including securing the border and delivering a balanced budget. now, part of the reason for the struggles is their thin majority. they can only lose for republicans on any given partisan vote. there's also some natural growing pains that come along with being in the new majority. a lot of these members have never served in the majority before, but there is another factor at play here, and that is that kevin mccarthy made a number of promises in order to win the speakership. that is really complicated his ability to govern that includes a more open amendment process on the house floor. and while lawmakers have welcomed that addition to the legislative process, they
12:43 pm
also admit it's been a little messy. i think we're holding tight to our commitment to america. and i know it looks a little bit dicey, and it doesn't look real fluid. but remember, we spent the last two years complaining that we had this top down authoritative government right leadership. and now you're seeing the opposite. where there is a lot of debate on the floor. you know you have yeah, you have amendments that we can put on the floor. that's democracy, and i think that's a positive thing that real pretty all the time, but i think it's positive. my colleague. any grain? i interviewed over two dozen republicans for this story, and we found that there is a lot of anxiety about the challenges ahead, and there is some frustration, particularly among the moderate members about how they have spent their time in power thus far. nancy mace, who represents a swing district told me she's concerned and disappointed with what they have focused on, which is also

our top stories. oklahoma inmate richard glossip could soon see his murder conviction and death row sentence tossed out and a new trial ordered he has spent a quarter of a century in prison for the death of his boss in 1997, cnn's jake tapper will be all over this story today on the lead, so, jake, you've been following this case for quite some time. yeah it's really a fascinating case and quite outrageous and a lot of ways because richard glossip was never actually accused of killing the individual victim, barry van trees. it was always established that 19 year old, then 19 year old justin sneed committed the murder. it's just that he claimed, and he did so in a deal that got him off death row and just into life in prison . he claimed that it was a murder for hire, and he blamed richard glossip. now, in addition to accusations that the defense did not get all the information that they were entitled to from the prosecution, it's become very
12:50 pm
clear. that justin sneed has had some fights with his conscience over the years, and cnn has had a look at some of the letters that he has written to his attorney, including saying things like quote. there are a lot of things right now that are eating at me some things i need to clean up. his attorney appears to suggest that he keep quiet that the only reason he's not on death row is because of his testimony. and another chance, he said. do i have the choice of recanting my testimony at any time during my life? so these are some of the details and it's also just a reminder of the fact that richard glossip has almost been executed three different times. he's avoided that fate, but it's a reminder that the justice system is only as infallible as the people who are part of it. and, of course, executing somebody is really some, uh, statement and an action by the state that cannot

be reversed in anyway. all right, we'll be watching. thanks so much, jake. at the top of the hour. the lead with jake tapper all right. for now, let's talk about new developments in the $1.6 billion defamation case against fox news. attorneys for the conservative media giants are now asking a judge to prohibit references to the january 6th insurrection and threats made to employees have dominion voting systems. they claim that they're not relevant to the case at hand. but dominion says that's not true. here with us. now cnn's oliver darcy oliver jury selection set for next week. so what does this request mean? potentially for the case moving forward. these are called motions and lemonade and their common pretrial motions that aim to limit the evidence and the arguments that each side can use at the actual trial and in these motions, which were filed earlier, but just became public yesterday, fox is moving to limit references to the capital
12:52 pm
attack. i'll read to you what they actually said. in their motion, they said. any reference to the capital tax will only unfairly prejudiced the jury against fox inflamed passions, prevent a fair trial and taint any resulting verdict. they're also seeking to limit references to the threats that dominion staffers faced in the wake of the 2020 election. they call those threats and excusable, but they say that it could inflame passions again for the jury. dominion obviously is objecting to these requests from fox and they've come out, and they said that the capital attack central they call at central to their case, and they also said about the threats that the median staffers face pointed this out, they said. it also became incredibly difficult for dominion to retain and win business because would be customers themselves are inundated with death threats, harassment and protests related to dominion trying to stay there that it's not only our staffers that were threatened after the election, but our customers were potentially threatened because they were in business with us,
12:53 pm
and so they want to include these arguments, and i'll just say two. fox is trying to say that their emotions are just aimed at bringing this to the core of the case. dominion obviously disagreeing, but it's a big case. we're talking $1.6 billion defamation case. is there a possibility of a settlement? there's always the possibility of the settlement, and it could come at any time. it could come during jury selection or even after jury selection, which is set to begin on thursday of next week. we don't know everyone i talked to the lawyers have talked to. they're kind of surprised at this. point that fox hasn't settled this because it's going to be such an uncomfortable trial for them. they're going to have their biggest stars sean hannity, tucker, carlson and others on the stand, and you're also going to have rupert murdoch. lachlan murdoch, the chief executive, suzanne scott. all of these people will be forced to take the witness stand and talk about what they knew about election lives. we know they didn't believe them because of this private texas text messages that have come out and why they allowed them to go be broadcast on fox is there so it
