00. wellcare medicare done well, melanie's nana in washington and this is cnn. hmm. a significant breach key u. s intelligence documents leaked online, embarrassing friends in bold inning enemies. new developments just in as the pentagon scrambles to catch the leaker before he or she strikes again, and the battle over abortion medication may be headed to the supreme court after two federal judges issue contradicting rulings and that biden administration says everything is on the table to protect access a major security operation underway in northern ireland as police they're prepared for president biden's arrival. cnn is in belfast as the country prepares to celebrate an important anniversary. the landmark good friday peace agreement. we are
6:02 am
following these major developing stories and many more all coming in right here. to cnn, new central. who leaked them. why were they leaked? how many secrets were lost? these are the key new questions this morning as the pentagon scrambles to do damage control after highly classified documents surfaced online. cnn has reviewed 53 of these documents. all of them appear to have been produced between mid february and early march. some reveal how the u. s has been eavesdropping on key allies, including south korea, israel, ukraine. a source close to ukrainian president vladimir zelensky tells cnn. ukraine has already altered some of its military plans because of these leaks. cnn national security reporter tasha bertrand joins us now live from the pentagon to tasha. what are you learning about where these documents came from, and how the administration is responding. john it's really
6:03 am
remarkable. what we're learning is that these documents first appeared on a social media platform called discard discord at least a month ago, and there are at least 50 of them, which cnn has reviewed and all of them have classified markings, including some up to the top secret level, which is the highest level of classification in the u. s government. now the u. s department of justice is investigating the matter based on a referral from the pentagon , which referred the matter to the justice department and the fbi for further investigation on friday night. but look, these documents contain incredibly sensitive information about ukrainian troop movements, strengths and weaknesses, including weaknesses in their air defenses as well as really important and new information about just how far the us intelligence community has been able to go in penetrating the russian defense ministry as well as the russian mercenary organization, wagner group, which of course, is also carrying out operations in ukraine. now, we are also learning from these documents that this comes this information
6:04 am
in these top secret document. come from a variety of different agencies across the u. s government, including the cia, as well as the defense intelligence agency. and so this really has a impacted a lot of different agencies across the government. as well as many of the united states its closest allies, including israel and south korea. a lot of these documents detail us eavesdropping and intercepted communications of these foreign allies talking to each other, so obviously there's going to be some friction here, moving forward between the u. s and allies. they're already though talking to those allies in conducting a damage assessment, john of how this lake may impact national security natasha bertrand, extraordinary stuff. thank you so much. keep us posted, and kate. i have to believe there's a great deal of concern because the leaker could still be out there. that's exactly right. and you're talking about kind of the scope of where this leaked information came from. let's dig into a little bit more of what what is being revealed in these documents. many of the league documents as natasha was talking about deal with russia's war on ukraine, including intelligence
6:05 am
on both countries. one secret document from february details the diminishing missile stocks that ukraine has on hand. it also includes estimated delivery of additional weapons systems and the training plans for ukrainian soldiers on those systems. now, another document shows proposed military strategies for ukraine logistics and policy recommendations for the country for ukraine, yet another document and it's marked top secret. it contains information on russia and ukrainian battalion sizes and their locations as well as the level of battlefield casualties being suffered on both sides. u s officials believe that the loss is spelled out in this document, in particular may have been altered to show fewer russian casualties than estimated other documents show the extent of us buying operations on south korea and israel, including with relation to south korea. a conversation between two senior south korean national security officials about their concerns over a us
6:06 am
request for ammunition that would be sent to ukraine. those officials discuss a way to get around the country's policy. the of not supplying lethal aid to countries at war. and when it comes to israel. some of those leaked documents have sparked outrage in the country intelligence gathered, allegedly revealing that israel's own intelligence service, the mossad , has been encouraging protests against the country's new government. the prime minister's office has already come out and flatly denied that assessment. now joining me there's a lot in here, but joining me for much more on this is lieutenant general mark hertling. mark hertling, cnn military analyst general. not just some of what is being revealed in these documents. what's most problematic about these leaks? from your view. what you said just a minute ago. kate is most problematic. there's a lot of them and their across the board, but what also adds to it, it's different than past leaks, which have been, you know. documents like the snowden leaks the weekend the wikileaks that are
6:07 am
documented pieces of paper that that tell the story what these do and what we've seen. some of them do are perhaps give misdirection or disinformation. they have been, uh, redesigned to show different things. from the original documents. we know that already, so it's a combination of real live data. real life secrets is natasha bertrand said. she said there some of them are top secret, but on some of those documents, they say, top secret no foreign, which means there's no foreign dissemination. that's the marking that's at the top of those, so it's not only the kind of intelligence we collect on photos but also the kind of intelligence that all nations connect, collect on their friends to we do this other nations do. that too, but you don't like it to be put into the public space, something that i wanted to ask you about, because if you're putting in like perspective, it's one thing of intelligence is leaked. never a good thing. but if intelligence is leaked about a past program or a broader strategy or
6:08 am
operation when we're looking at here, in the sense that we're getting in the reaction to it is what does it mean when it's in real time general when the leak has to do with supply levels and capabilities in an ongoing war? yeah again. i'll compare it to the wikileaks a couple of years ago that occurred. those were cables and things that were going between embassies and had long term planning issues. but when you're talking about today , the russian invasion in ukraine are intent to support our you can ukrainian partners with equipment and with supplies , the battle maps that are happening, you know, within the last week or the last couple of days. you know those give real life close in. uh timely intelligence to an enemy and that's not good. it's unfortunate that this has happened this way. but it's also truthfully kate being risked miss read by many people who don't understand what's in those documents. and i'll say the new york times they did a piece
6:09 am
yesterday, where they literally put two slides from the joint staff within their article, with no description of what it was you know when i read when i looked at the two slides, having been on the joint staff once i knew exactly what it was saying , and it was not saying the same thing that was in the newspaper report, so you're going to get amateur intel analysis analysts saying things that just aren't true about some of these documents, but that doesn't decrease the fear factor that's involved in these things leaking to the general public. general real quick. what does u s military need to be doing right now to mitigate the damage from this? yeah yeah, fine. fine who leaked it? first of all, and they've done that by addressing it with the department of justice. but there's also some internal looks on how these things could have gotten out. i have some ideas having worked in the pentagon what might have happened, but they also have to do really rapid assessments, not only the u. s military but also
6:10 am
militaries around the world and governments around the world. they have to pull intel analyst off their normal job, which takes them away from what they would normally be doing and say , hey, what's the damage assessment of these things? linke? what could happen because people see what's on these documents or know about the sources and methods. all of those things are important. and all those things are this is all obviously happening as we speak, general. thank you very, very much, sarah. a big week ahead for president biden. he heads to ireland and northern ireland tomorrow. his first stop is belfast, where he will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the signing of a historic peace agreement that helped end decades of violent clashes that killed tens of thousands of people. police in northern ireland have launched a massive security operation amid heightened fears of a potential terrorist attack. cnn's nic robertson is live in dairy with the very latest nick what is on the president's agenda in northern ireland. well he's

going to do ribbon cutting at a new university in the center of belfast, likely talked there about the importance of the economy, the importance of education. we have been talking to some of the politicians in belfast and one of them in particular from the sinn fein political organization is an mp in london was really commending the president's visit. i don't think we would have had a peace process or certainly a good friday agreement without the involvement of the american administration and successive american administrations in implementing our peace. joe biden himself has a very strong track record and supporting our peace process. it presents us with an enormous opportunity that we must grasp. but what's happening here in darius something completely different. this is much more about that big police operation. the police say they've got a strong intelligence that says a group called the new ira dissident

small group of republicans here in northern ireland want to have a big public disorder event, and that is quite literally what's beginning to unfold down the street behind me. the police are not far away. the police have said that the parade this organization wants to have isn't authorized. we are very aware of what's been happening in the backstreets here. i can tell you if the police do come in contact with this crowd, it would be a very, very fiery confrontation indeed, and they have been confrontations here before just a little down the street from here. that's where a journalist was shot and killed by this particular organization. just a couple of years ago, sarah 25 years ago, things were very different in ireland and northern ireland. now that sinn fein has quite a bit of popularity. how do you think president biden will will handle this trip he has known as one of the most irish presidents that the united states has had. yeah i could puts him for the you know, from the point of view of

hospitalized. no word yet on her condition. sarah this morning, the white house is vowing to protect access to a key abortion pill as conflicting rulings by two federal judges are now teeing up a potential supreme court showdown. here's what's happening. on friday, a federal judge in texas suspended the fda is longstanding approval of the abortion pill, kristen. he paused his ruling for a week for the doj to appeal the fda, which approved for preston over 20 years ago, has repeatedly said that the education is safe. and reiterated its approval is based on the best available science. the lawsuit claims harmful side effects have been ignored. right now. medication abortion is banned in 13 states already, but if this ruling stands access to the drug could be cut off, even in states where it's legal, this would impact millions of americans across the united states as it's used in combination with a second drug.
6:20 am
to terminate pregnancies. medication abortion accounts for more than half of legal abortions in the united states. kristen is also used to care for women who have miscarriages and conflicting decision that also came out on friday, a federal judge in washington state prohibited us authorities for making any changes that would hinder access to mifepristone in 17 democratic led states. and washington, d. c the department of justice has filed an appeal to the texas ruling, but the bottom line here this has the making to become the supreme court first major post road case , cnn's are let science is outside of the white house are let what more are you hearing from officials and what they might be planning to do after these two rulings? well sarah the biden administration is working through how exactly they can protect access to this medication abortion, but they might be quite limited in what they can do from here at the white house. president biden has
6:21 am
vowed to fight this ruling from that federal judge in texas every step of the way, and he has warned that it could impact access to medication abortion across the country, but also it could have further repercussions on other drugs that have been approved by the fda in the past , the hhs secretary javier basara, told our colleague dana bash yesterday. quote we want the courts to overturn this reckless decision. the justice department did move very quickly on friday night to file an appeal to this ruling, and they are also planning on seeking a state trying to put a more permanent pause on this ruling. as it winds its way through the courts and very well could make its way ultimately to the supreme court, the attorney general merrick garland, saying quote the department is committed to protecting americans access to legal reproduce. active care now, some of the big questions now are what exactly the white house can do to try to protect access to this medication. abortion there are some democrats and even a republican, nancy mace of south
6:22 am
carolina, who has said the fda should simply ignore this ruling that the courts shouldn't be telling what the fda they can't can and cannot approve the administration, though initially , basara yesterday said that every option was on the table. but then a spokesperson walked that back a bit and said that ignoring a court's ruling could set a dangerous precedent. but right now, the white house is trying to work through what more can be done. but for the time being, they might simply be watching this appeals process play out in court. that appeal is sitting with the fifth circuit court of appeals, which is considered to be one of the country's most conservative appeals court. sarah it's all very interesting a lot of people watching and waiting to see what happens. there are are lot signs there at the white house. yuzhin for healthcare providers across the country and cnn's elizabeth cohen. she's focused in on that for us right now, elizabeth, what are you hearing from? what are you hearing about how physicians and clinicians are dealing with this? they are
6:23 am
really having a hard time they are really worried about the health of their patients. kate and let's take a look this sort of references, something that sarah said earlier 53% actually probably more than 53% of abortions in the u. s are carried out by medication. it's a combination of two pills, including different kristen, which is the one that we're talking about today, so that is a lot of women who are getting their miscarriage. care who were getting their abortion care by that drug, and i was speaking with a lawyer who represents abortion clinics, and she said she's telling her clients. look if there is not a change between now and saturday, starting on saturday, you just can't give this anymore so quiet. so these clinics are having to call their patients. they're having to come up with some other options are really worried about the health of their patients. kate this drug was approved by the fda elizabeth more than 20 years ago . so how could this ruling impact that approval process? it
6:24 am
could impact it in a really big way. i mean, when we sort of heard from our letter about this a bit that hhs secretary javier becerra he was speaking with dana bash yesterday. and he said , look, essentially if a drug company is going to invest millions of dollars into looking into a drug, the fda there scientists their external advisors. all these scientists say, it's good to go and then one guy, one guy who is not a scientist can say no, i don't like this drug. let's get rid of it. you can imagine the drug companies might be kind of hesitant to in vest those billions of dollars in future life saving medications, so let's take a listen to what secretary bessire said to dana bash yesterday. when you turn upside down the entire fda approval process you're not talking about just myth, mr kristo. you're talking about every kind of drug you're talking about our vaccines. you're talking about insulin. you're talking about the new alzheimer's drugs that may come on if a judge decides to substitute his preferences, personal opinion for that of
6:25 am
scientists and medical professionals. what drug isn't subject to some kind of legal challenge. and remember, it's not just abortion drugs that conservatives object to. they also have objected to other drugs, kate elizabeth. thank you so much. how physicians how clinicians how these clinics across the country deal with this is it is it is a huge question going forward, and it's not settled come from medical family. this has political implications, but very real implications for doctors right now. absolutely security at new jersey mosques after an imam is stabbed during morning prayers. police say the suspect was doing prior to the attack. and how members of the congregation took him down. texas governor greg abbott moves to pardon the man convicted of murder just a few days ago. this stems from a killing after a black lives matter protest new details coming in. oh what a good time

it really is the most comfortable place in the universe. experience the difference at moon pod dot co. melissa bell covering the protests in paris, and this is cnn. this morning. a prominent muslim leader is in stable condition and recovering after being stabbed yesterday during an early morning prayer service at a mosque in paterson, new jersey authorities say this man 32 year old saref, zorba they say he allegedly stabbed the imam multiple times. while more than 200 congregants were kneeling for the five am prayers. officials say zorba then attempted to flee with several people. you can even see it on video. they were able to restrain him, stop him and hold him until police arrived. cnn's omar jimenez is the very latest for us. omar what are officials saying this morning? well at
6:31 am
this point. they're trying to investigate a whole bunch of things, including any potential motive. i mean, this was something that happened during the first prayer service on sunday at the omar mosque in paterson, new jersey, and we are in the holy month of ramadan. you can see on your screen there. this is a man in a white hoodie in the third row of congregants. when they go down, he goes forward and does this act tries to then run away as congregants are all grabbing onto him trying to slow him down? they eventually do subdue him. until police arrive, and that suspect was eventually arrested. that suspect is 32 year old as you mentioned saref zorba, according to the passaic county prosecutor's office, and so we're he has a court appearance expected later today , but as for the imam, he was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. but as i mentioned, this is in the holy month of ramadan, take a listen to how the mosque is now responding. this is a holy time
6:32 am
for muslims, and actually, you know other religions as well. we're celebrating easter was celebrated passover but for ramadan is the holiest month of the year, and typically, there are more congregants than other times. it's a it's a spiritual time for us and naturally, something like this, you know, is bothersome and, um and we naturally don't expect it to happen. it has not happened at our congregation before. now as for the suspect, prosecutors say he's facing charges of attempted murder and unlawful possession of a weapon. he's expected to appear in court later today. it's unclear if he has an attorney, but the mayor of pat patterson says they do expect to increase security not only this mosque but others, especially through the remainder of ramadan . and that's understandable, omar. thank you, john. alright this morning. texas governor greg abbott is promising to pardon a man who was convicted of murder just three days ago. army sergeant in rideshare driver daniel perry was convicted of killing garrett
6:33 am
foster at a black lives matter. protests in 2020. cnn's ed lavandera joins us now from dallas. ed. why is governor abbott moving to part in this guy. well it is a stunning announcement that the governor is making but in a statement that he released over the weekend, the governor says that he believes texas has some of the strongest standard ground laws in the country, and that that cannot be notified by a jury or a progressive democrat district attorney there in austin, texas, but what is also happening in this case is that the case of daniel perry has become a celebrity case in the right wing media. and there has been a great deal of pressure from the likes of fox news host tucker carlson, putting pressure on the governor to pardon daniel perry. in fact, tucker carlson talked about this case friday night during his show, and it was the next day on saturday that the texas governor made
6:34 am
this vow, saying that he is quote working as swiftly as texas law will allow to ensure the pardon of daniel perry. he also, uh, this is you know, the process here in texas is rather complicated, though, john. this case has to go before the board of pardons and paroles. they have to issue a recommendation before a texas governor can issue a pardon, so it has to still go through all of that. and what is really striking in this case, john is that this case technically is not fully over. in fact, the punishment the punishment phase hasn't even started. sentencing testimony is scheduled to begin tuesday in austin. so this case isn't even over. and the district attorney in austin says that his quote deeply troubling that the governor of texas is intervening in this case at this stage. lavandera truly is remarkable to see the speed with which governor abbott is moving here. thank you so much. sarah now look at the legalities involved . in this case. i'm joined by
6:35 am
criminal defense attorney and cnn legal analyst joey jackson. i'm not sure as you just heard john mentioned there i've ever seen. something happened this quickly. the day after a conviction, we haven't gotten to the sentencing. and yet, the governor saying, hey, i am going to move to pardon this guy. how unusual is this? yes sarah. it's very unusual. good morning. to you. the reality is that if the system is going to work, there has to be a process which everyone could respect by into and that works and part of that process is allowing a jury to make a determination allowing that process to play out with respect to a conviction or acquittal here conviction and then at least a sentencing. and then, of course, as a defense attorney, i'll tell you their variety of options right one option. vesely is the appeal to determine whether there were any legal or factual errors that were made, which would warrant a determination was the evidence factually sufficient legally sufficient. it goes through that process, and, you know, then what? maybe maybe right, we have these different layers, but for a governor to intervene, and
6:36 am
that's predicated upon right wing or left wing media. it's just ridiculous and it really it just throws a lot of things at a system which people have a distrust for already. you add this to the equation, it becomes highly problematic and highly troubling. so further breaking down sort of the judicial system in people's belief in it. i do want to talk about a little bit about the details of this case. the defense has said that their client acted in self defense and that he claimed the man he killed pointed his gun at him. he was holding a gun with his within his right in texas. um but the jury didn't buy it, and , according to the austin statesman's newspaper at the trial the prosecutor brought up several social media post by the defendant, one of which was pretty stunning. it is as before the shooting happened, and he posted kill a few people that he might kill a few people on his way to work because they were quote writing outside his apartment complex in the end,
6:37 am
eight days of trial two days of deliberations. what does this tell you with this potential pardon? what kind of an impact might this pardon? it's send, i think. sorry. the impact is huge , and here's why, at every trial , their issues in dispute and certainly his defense lawyers tried to argue the issue of stand your ground. we know texas has stand your ground. it has since 2007. it follows florida which was in 2005, and in that stand your ground. you have no duty to retreat. you are justified in killing someone in the event. you were in imminent fear for your life. if your reaction was proportionate to the threat posed can't shoot someone for punching you and you acted reasonably. those are all issues in dispute, but to your point there was an eight day trial. there was two days of the liberation based upon those issues in dispute and a jury unanimous. i may conclude right made a decision that we're rejecting that. and so how do we have a process where you pick the jurors as a prosecutor and defendant both by into picking a
6:38 am
jury? you get a system? you make your opening statement. you elicit testimony from the witnesses. you cross examine them. and then a governor says nothing to see here. i wasn't at the trial, but i do listen to you know either right wing or left wing doesn't matter. it shouldn't be predicated upon the news and the news you listen to. it shouldn't be predicated upon politics. it needs to be predicated upon what happened in that courtroom and what did not happen. this jury's conclusion for it to be overturned, you know, or potentially as the governor, saying it just really . it leaves a bad taste in the mouth of everyone, not only practitioners who really look at the process to evaluate and determine what's right and what's wrong project. you're saying very disappointed. there is a victim in this case who is dead of family who is mourning who are going to be frustrated about this. it won't happen right away. but the governor was very quick to make this announcement and did mention some political stuff when it comes to the d a. but this was the jury's decision, so we will have to see what happens with the with the board. absolutely appreciate it. joey jackson.

what we saw with the military drills. okay. china says these drills simulate precision attacks on key targets in taiwan, and for the first time it appears chinese simulated strikes with war planes that took off from an aircraft carrier. now beijing has not launched any missiles during these drills, but its military released this animation and it shows missiles fired from land, sea and air into taiwan. you can see from the video that two of them explode into flames in taiwan's ocean affairs council also released a video showing taiwan's coast guard confronting china. the ship. take a listen here to what the taiwanese sailor says to the chinese ship. you are now seriously damaging regional peace, stability and safety. please turn around immediately and leave. if you keep proceeding forward, i will take eviction measures. and kate. that video really highlights the very real risk of any accident or mistake around

taiwan. beijing sees the democratically ruled island as part of its territory and claims that these drills are a warning to taiwan separatist forces and is necessary to defend its national sovereignty. selena this is the first of this type of military drill as you lay out very perfectly, but also not the first time. we've seen china respond when would regarding taiwan. how does this compare to the drills that we saw when, after nancy pelosi visited taiwan? yes so experts say that the military response this time has not quite reached the scale of last summer's reaction to pelosi's visit. back then, china had launched these massive military drills that surrounded the island and for the first time back, then even fired missiles over taiwan. so part of the reason why we're seeing relatively more restraint is because the meeting between thai and mccarthy was held on american soil that was done on purpose to avoid overly provoking beijing, and experts also say that beijing has been normalizing military activity around taiwan. on it already
