consequential news. donald trump lashing out at the jury that found he sexually abused and defamed e. jean carroll. he was still posting on social media after midnight calling the jurors partisan. >> what else can you expect from a trump hating, clinton-pinted judge, speaking to and in control of a jury from an anti-trump area which is probably the worst place in the united states for me to get a fair trial. i don't even know who this woman is. i have no idea who she is, where she came from. this is another scam. >> we should note, it was an anonymous jury by the way in this trial. we'll get into all that. the jurors ordered trump to pay $5 million in damages to carroll. federal jury found him sexually abused her in a dressing room in a manhattan deposit store in the mid 90s and then defamed her last year when he called her a con job. this was a civil trial.

her attorney. also this morning, more trouble if you thought that was even possible for embattled new york congressman george santos. as first reported by cnn, the republican lawmaker is expected in court in new york as soon as today after being criminally charged way federal prosecutors. the specific charges remain under seal. san santos was under question for questionable campaign finances. he's been facing intense scrutiny and calls to resign ever since revealed he lied about his heritage, education, professional background and 50 other things, too. cnn's reporter is live in new york outside the courthouse with more. what do we think the charges relate to at this point? >> yeah. it's still unclear, as you said. that indictment is still under seal. our colleagues reporting that george santos, the republican congressman who just took office in january, could, as soon as today, appear in the courthouse

behind me in front of a judge on these charges. of course, we're looking to get more details about that. but if you remember, cnn has reported late last year federal prosecutors were looking into the personal finances of george santos. how does he make his money? specifically, how did he loan more than $700,000 to his 2022 successful campaign? there is also been scrutiny about expenditures around his campaign. they're all on the table. what led up to today, still very unclear. phil, we do know that the congressman did not vote in a house vote according to sources last night. he did get on a plane and head to new york. again, we expect him possibly as soon as today. >> i think the congressman has become a punch line in washington. late night talk show host as well. this is a reminder this stuff is very serious. but there is also been a lot of it. can you remind us how we got here in the first place? the scale of the lies that we're

new york university this morning is mourning two business students killed in puerto rico. they both peruvian nationals were shot and killed outside a bar saturday morning. according to nyu, the two students were bystanders caught in a fight between two unrelated groups. they were traveling with other students on a brief vacation. >> cnn first reported it and this morning we're waiting to learn what charges federal prosecutors have filed against new york embattled congressman george santos. charges have been filed under seal. santos is expected to appear in federal court. that could happen as soon as today. of that's when we could learn

the exact nature of the charges. what we do know and can report is that fbi and the justice department have been examining allegations of false statements in santos' campaign finance filings. top republicans called on him to resign. let's bring in robert zimmerman, the democratic candidate that lost to him. he is also a strategist for the democratic national committee. >> i'm a committee member, it's a volunteer position. >> do you know the charges? >> i heard a lot of speculation. i read speculation. it focuses on the campaign finances. that makes the most sense. nothing about his finances ever added up or made sense. they need the department of justice to step in and do the forensic work required. this is quite encouraging. that's quite encouraging to see the system of justice move forward and our department of justice move really expeditiously at this point to bring him to justice. our district's been betrayed.

information given us. we went to the media. did our best to sound the alarm. a lot did pick up the issues. as many contributors on cnn pointed out, local congressional races get lost. marquee races get all the attention. that is a problem. we had an election year with a governor's race. crime was dominant. we lost four congressional districts because of that. my point to you simply is obviously we have to make sure going forward that we also -- we have to make sure very importantly going forward that we hold the republicans accountable for keeping george santos in congress. that is the bottom line here. i want to see much more aggressive work done. we have to invest in local media too. >> let's talk about going forward. you mention the four seats that went -- i mean new york is the majority maker. >> absolutely right. >> george santos is one of those. the other republicans who flip seats or won biden districts in new york have all almost to a person come out and attacked santos. said he should resign. said he should be removed. it's very clear in the district,

the republican leaders feel that way as well. he's clearly not going anywhere. the speaker has not asked for him to leave. why? >> you know, the end of the day, kevin mccarthy has to make a decision. about whether he wants to stand up for the integrity of the institution or protect george santos. it's very clear in a republican party where donald trump is the front-runner for president and marjorie taylor greene is in house leadership that they're not embarrass bid george santos. they don't feel the urgency to hold him accountable for the lies he committed. you made an important point in the early part of the show. santos is more than a late night punch line or a washington topic. we're suffering in our congressional district. we don't have a member of congress. and we don't have congressional office addressing issues like affordability or getting funding in our district for infrastructure. these are critical issues. i spent a good part of my time taking casework questions from constituents or local government groups that need assistance.

for the air strikes that killed the islamic jihad commanders yesterday. this is the first response that we've had from the gaza strip with rockets being fired towards israel. i don't think anyone in israel is under the illusion that these were last. poppy? >> elliott, thank you for that reporting. phil. we're learning details about the man who opened fire at a texas outlet mall killing eight people. officials say he had neonazi i hadation including tattoos and patches. in a news conference, investigators said the suspect had eight weapons with him at the outlet mall, three on him, another five in his car. all of them, they say, he bought legally. on saturday afternoon, witnesses said they started hearing gun shots at the outlet mall. the gunman killed eight people and hurt seven others before an officer who was already at the mall shot and killed him. the police chief says the whole thing lasted about three to four minutes. cnn's josh campbell joins us live from alex, texas, this

morning. at this point, we have any idea, any word on what the motive had been? >> so we've been doing some reporting based on our sources looking into the suspect's background. we uncovered this troubling online social media presence. posts about right-wing extremism, white supremacy, obsession over nazis and guns and past mass shootings. authorities are not prepared to conclude a specific motive. they did provide an update yesterday. they said they're still going through the suspect's digital devices, social media, regional fbi computer laboratory is going through his material. they're still trying to get into the computer. authorities did provide a little information about how that shooting went down and what they're looking at. take a listen. >> we do know that he had neonazi ideation. he had tattoos and his signature verified that. to me, he targeted the location

joining us no you to discuss, nato secretary-general. mr. secretary-general, i appreciate your time. along with something that i think everybody was observing yesterday and that is the victory day parade in moscow. there is a lot of attention paid to how scaled down it was. did you read anything that in what we all saw? is there something to take away from that? >> i think we all should be careful reading too much into a parade. it is the fact that russia lost a lot of capabilities in the war against ukraine. we have to remember that this was a war that president vladimir putin planned to win within days and now we have been in ukraine for 15 months. the they have suffered heavy casualties. and this just demonstrates that big strategic mistake by vladimir putin to launch this aggression against ukraine. >> you mention the length of the

war, the expectations at the very start of the invasion. the durability and the ability for ukraine to succeed up to this point or to push back throughout the course of the last 15 months is astonishing. however, ukrainian officials have voiced some concern that the expectations may be a little bit too high for the counter offensive. if there are not sweeping victories or significant pushes that the alliance that held together remarkably well over the course of 15 months supporting ukraine may start to wither or fracture. what is your read on that? >> president putin made two big mistakes. one is totally underestimate the ukrainian, the ukrainian armed forces and leadership. but they also totally underestimated allies and the u.s. leadership that is demonstrated since the invasion. allies have provided

unprecedented support to ukraine and partners have reiterated again and again we'll stand by ukraine as long as it takes. this is just demonstrated this week with the announcement from the united states, more than $1 billion extra dollars in military aid. and wars are by nature unpredictability. but what we have seen is ukrainians have been able to retake territory before. et w it was in the east and south. and all the equipment, all the training they have received from partners including nine brigades trained and well equipped, all of this should enable them to retake more territory in the counter offensive. at the same time, we should never underestimate the russians. they have been static for a long time. the russians have been able to

build significant defensive alliance with minefields. >> you mention the durability of the alliance. they could go stronger and actually larger by at least one since the invasion. but there is another nation, sweden that, is also in line to join. do you believe sweden which is facing issues with at least one member country, possibly two, will be part of the alliance by july during the nato summit? >> i'm absolutely confident that sweden will become a member. i'll work hard to ensure that will happen by the summit in july this year. and we have to remember that regardless of when that happens, they will be a full member. sweden is in a much better position now than before. all allies invited sweden to

become a member at our summit last year in madrid. since then, swede hen a special status meaning they're participating in nato meetings and integrating into our structures. the united states issued bilateral security assurances which fill in -- if you look at the map, swede sen surrounded by nato countries. it is absolutely inconceivable there is any attack or effect against sweden without nato reacting. so, we're a long way. i hope we can finalize the process by then. let me add, this isn't actually a third big strategic mistake that vladimir putin made. he invaded ukraine and sent the clear message he doesn't want more nato on his borders. he's getting the opposite. he is getting more presence in the alliance. and he is getting two new
