this point. you have heard this different public messaging from the white house, and speaker kevin mccarthy heading into the face-to-face meeting at 3:00 this afternoon. our colleague telling lauren fox today that he is not optimistic about the upcoming talks unless things change. this is running counter from what you heard from president biden over the weekend when he said this he heard optimistic tone that they would reach something. and this is when they were talking in earnest on both sides, but both sides have called the meetings constructive even though they are very slow going in getting to any type of an agreement or establishing contours of what could be hammered out between president biden and the house speaker. you know, there are those areas that have been put on the table

to open to some potential compromise to permitting reform to clawing back the covid relief funds, but some sticking areas to the length of budget caps as well as the requirements for certain government aid programs, but right now, everyone is facing a real time crunch in this moment. the house speaker thinks that he believes there has to be a deal struck by this weekend, and it is simply doing to take a lot of time to move the legislation, and corral the caucuses together in order to get these types of agreements signed into actual law. a bit earlier today, we heard secretary yellen of the treasury saying that if they default, there are no good options that the treasury can use to save frus catastrophe, so clearly

florida today. it is all over a newly passed law that imposes tough penalties on undocumented immigrants and anyone helping them in the state. it is going into effect in july and makes transporting anyone into the country illegally a felony. requires companies with 25 employees or more to check the status of workers and fine the workers who hire undocumented workers. carlos suarez is here with more on this. you have been talking to people in florida about the confusion, about the law, about what is going on hee, and what are they telling you? >> kate, as you can imagine, the undocumented workers across the state are afraid. immigration groups are saying

that undocumented groups across the state is well over 500,000, and the group in homestead, and we are talking about 20,000 undocumented workers who take to the fields including this one behind mef ri every single day. and the confusion around this law is around misinformation. now the law does a number of things. one of those requirements now are that companies with at least 25 employees must now check the immigration status of all new hires up against a federal database. hospitals across the state of florida must now ask the patients about the immigration status, and now it is a crime, a third degree felony in the state of florida to knowingly transport an illegal immigrant into the state of florida. there is some concern going into this law that was signed last week and heading into july when it takes effect about whether or
7:33 am
not we are going to be seeing a work stoppage. a lot of the conversation was taking place on social media, and folks saying that immigrant workers would walk off of the job in protest of the new law, but the immigration groups that we talked to said that is not the case right now, and we caught up with the organizers of the farm groups of florida said that their workers right now, and stay on the job, and we will see how the new law shakes out, and he talked about the uncertainty they are seeing, and this is what he told us. >> in the short term we are seeing it, because people are confused and afraid and thinking that they should be leaving the state, and they should not be showing up to work. we are also seeing people empowered to speak out against it because they are here doing the work that other people don't want to be doing.
7:34 am
>> so, the farm workers association of florida say they have heard of some reports of workers having left fields and their jobs in the days after the law was signed by governor ron desantis, but he believes that the workers were not sure if they could go back to their jobs. again, they are telling workers to stay on the job, and ignore the posts on social media, and wait for law to take effect in july and we will see how the employers including these behind me deal with the new restrictions. >> carlos suarez, thank you. this morning the new york city mayor is saying to look at using 20 school gyms as shelters as they are seeking more asylum seekers coming as they join more cities across the nation to be receiving asylum seekers trying
