used the social media app tiktok on their personal devices. the governor signed a bill that bans the app from operating within state lines to protect personal and private data from the chinese communist party. it says there's a potential fine of $10,000 per day for breaking the law. it also applying to app stores that host tiktok. nationwide this app is restricted from government-issued mobile fonts. i'm joined by eric ebbenstein, tiktok's senior director of public policy. thank you so much for being with us, as a really crucial time here. >> thanks for having me. >> do you think tiktok will take legal action, or will that fall to first amendment advocates? >> we're reviewing our options. i will say we have hundreds of thousands of users and creators

parent company lied about it. do you see why american government and americans would have reticence in taking tiktok's word about the app? >> thank for you bringing it up. tiktok is not available in china. our corporate parent is not head quartered in china. we're a privately held company, and 60% are global institutional investors, a lot based here in the united states. but i want to take it one step further. we've been engaging for over a year now, maybe, with our trusted technology partner on a program project texas. it's a regime by which u.s. user data will be stored here on the cloud. although, to be clear there's never any evidence or proof about any kind of information sharing. we steadfastly deny that.

going forward wile have additional milestones to ann announce. there was an employees of the parent company -- part me of tiktok -- there was a chinese-based employees who was trying to get information. he ended up being fired -- information from the u.s.-based employ crease about that oracle server, location and details of it. can you assure americans that kind of funny business is not happening anymore. i'm not familiar with that case, but project texas has stood up for cases just like that. we have 150 million american users on tiktok every month and around 5 million businesses making their livelihood. we want them to continue to grow with us. >> how much of project texas is stood up at this point?

with stefano, who is live for us. where do authorities think these kids are now? >> reporter: where the kids are -- it's easy to point on a map, because it's in the valley of a river, which is a tributary of the amazon. however, that is one of the most remote and sparsely populated regions in south america. it's a region where people move around either with canoes and boats on the river or small single-engine flights, like the one these kids were on in the flight that crashed down on may 1st. due to the bad weather, authorities are telling us they haven't been able to employ's much to find them and rescue them. they say they know where they are, but that doesn't mean that the kids are safe and back with the authorities. just to give you an idea of how

the price of a home in the u.s. is falling and so are sales. a new report shows that after a brief rise in february sales of existing homes last month dropped 3.4%. overall sales were down 23% from a year ago. the good news for potential buyers is that existing homes saw their biggest drop in price since 2011. the average listing last month was some $380,800, down nearly 2% from 2022 prices. the report states as well prices

eased in the west and the south but rose in the north east and the midwest. lots to follow there. so do you need more evidence that americans are worried about inflation? wal-mart says to check out their grocery division. the company says grocery sales increased by double digits last quarter even as sales of discretionary product like home goods and clothing were sluggish. matt, wal-mart says even wealthier households have been buying up a lot of groceries at wal-mart. what does that tell you about the overall picture of the economy? >> well, first americans are bargain shopping. right, after two years of high inflation people are looking for deals, and no surprise they're looking for deals at wal-mart. this brand is all about every day low prices. so this is all just fine for wal-mart. they just reported pretty strong

sales growth. sales in the first quarter up by 7.4%. that's pretty solid for a company the size of wal-mart, it's actually twice the pace of sales growth a year ago. and what's interesting here is where people are spending their money. wal-mart reported strong growth for groceries, pets, wellness, pharmacy. what do those things have in common? those are all things people need to spend money on. maybe not what they want to but what they need to. wal-mart says there's been softer sales growth for more discretionary items including home improvement and electronics and clothes. and as you mentioned wal-mart also said they're starting to gain market share among higher income families. again, that's more evidence people are price conscious right now. i think, boris, people are still spending money, they're just spending the money differently and perhaps at different places. >> and matt, notably this report

comes as target and home depot are reporting that their sales are actually down. >> yeah, so target reported some disappointing numbers. their sales were just fractionally higher in the latest quarter, but they actually said that their online sales were down, and they reported that consumers are pulling back, again, on the more discretionary items. home improvement -- you know, home improvement had just been booming for the longest time as people who were stuck at home during covid spent a lot of money to improve their homes and trying to sell their homes in a hot housing market, and some of those numbers jim just reported on home sales slowing down, that has also hurt some of the sales numbers at home depot. >> yeah, a lot of uncertainty in the economy especially as we're looking at a potential default on u.s. debt. hopefully a break through comes soon on a deal. matt eegen, thanks for your reporting as always. coming up a killer strike. the moment a baseball pitcher threw a curve ball during
