kitchen table issues. and i'd also remind desantis and his team, the average republican primary voter is on the older side, largely 50 plus, and that is not be a audience in twitter spaces talking about elon musk's latest grievances. so i think that they need to get back to kitchen table issues and economic policy because this was not a winning campaign launch. >> and she makes a strong point because by launching on twitter space, he denied himself the cheers from supporters that positions you in the minds of people of someone who can win. >> and audio only, difficult when things go wrong because with visuals you can somehow deal with it or make a joke about it. >> worst thing that has come out of this for him is the new nickname, which is disaster. chinese hackers are laying

the ground work in cyberspace for a possible future crisis between washington and beijing according to microsoft. the effort is likely focused on disrupting critical communications between the u.s. and its allies in asia. >> western security agencies are also concerned that china could apply the same worldwide. kristie lu stout is joining us. give us some more detail. >> reporter: let's dig into this report from microsoft and this group known as volt typhoon. this is a state shop orred chinese hacking group that microsoft says has been spying on american critical infrastructure. in the report that just came out, it was released on wednesday, microsoft says that the group is out to disrupt critical communications between the u.s. and asia in the event of a crisis. microsoft says that the group volt typhoon has been active since mid 2021 and targeted critical infrastructure in parts of the u.s. including guam. guam is home to strategic u.s.

military installations and also the site of a major communications hub between the u.s. and asia pacific region. i want you to look at this full screen graphic of sectors according to microsoft that are targeted by the chinese hacking group. they include construction, education, government, i.t., manufacturing, maritime, transport, utility. and microsoft published details of the code online. you can find it there so users can find and remove the code but also added that it will be tough detecting and mitigating the attack. and china has responded to the report, it has slammed it, in fact in the last hour ministry of foreign affairs briefing we heard from a spokesperson who said that this is a collective disinformation campaign of the five coalition countries by the u.s. for geopolitical purposes. of course this report comes as tensions continue to similar between china, the u.s., over a

whole slew of issues from taiwan, tech and of course territorial disputes in the asia pacific region. donald trump's legal team wants to meet with the u.s. attorney general to talk about the o the ongoing special counsel investigations. >> paula reid has the details. >> reporter: attorneys for former president trump are seeking a meeting with the attorney general to air their alleged grievances over the special counsel's investigation. in a short one paragraph letter posted to social media, they espouse some of the concerns that the former president has repeatedly expressed in terms of all investigations that he has faced saying that no president has ever faced anything like this and inferring that the process has been unfair. but there is no specific allegations against special counsel jack smith in terms of what he has done that has been improper. it is unclear if the attorney

general or the justice department will grant the meeting request, it is not unusual for defense attorneys to meet with prosecutors if defense attorneys have been informed their client could potentially be charged with a crime. but sources tell cnn that the former president's attorneys have not received any such notification that the investigation has wrapped up or that any indictments are imminent. this is just their general request for a meeting. it is unclear if it will be granted. though recently the justice department did grant a similar request for president biden's son hunter biden, they were allowed to go in, meet with prosecutors and present their case for why they don't believe their client should be charged. and in that case they met with a u.s. attorney overseeing the probe as well as career officials. the trump lawyers want to meet with the attorney general which would be extraordinary, but since their investigation is being handled by a special counsel who is really only overseen by the attorney general, it is unclear who if

and when you talk to official, they underscore that it is actually a good thing. one official told me that we're working and that is all you need to know. and that is kind of the reality at this moment because the time line is exceedingly short, the path forward to try to prevent a default is exceedingly short and a lot of work do. and also a clear sense after the meetings on wednesday that there has been progress. not a deal, not a final agreement, and they certainly need one sooner rather than later, that progress was important and underscored what karine jean-pierre said while the meeting was ongoing. take a listen. >> what i can say is that the negotiations have been proceed d productive which is what matters and the focus is on what the leaders said themselves. speaker mccarthy and the

president. default is off the table and we'll continue to negotiate in good faith. and if that is what occur, then we can get to a bipartisan reasonable negotiation or deal on a budget deal. >> reporter: so the question is where do negotiators go from here. one member of the team, patrick mchenry, actually stayed after his colleagues left. he went into the white house, was working on several other issues i'm told. whether or not that actually got them closer to a final agreement remains an open question. but to some degree the silence is actually a good sign particularly after the broad signs the last several days, productive was one description, then things went south, back up again, south again. there is one sense when you talk to lawmakers and white house officials alike that they understand that there is no more time for posturing, no more time for hyperbole, they need to figure something out.

been sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison. a jury convicted richard barnett in january of eight charges including civil disorder and obstructing an official proceeding. >> he has not shown remorse for his actions. court documents say he spent ten minutes in pelosi's office. and he wrote a note using a sexist expletive. and he says he will appeal his case. virginia police say a man arrested at a preschool on tuesday with an ak 47 appeared paranoid. >> court filing says he had loaded magazines and pistol. and he told officers that he worked for the cia. no indication that he actually did. we're following developments in ukraine where authorities say russia launched a new wave of air attacks across the country using drones.

president zelenskyy says russia used 36 drones and none reached their target. clare sebastian is following this for us. it was july last year when jake sullivan first mentioned that iran might be supplying drones to russia. iran continues to deny it. >> and this is now assumed certainly by the u.s., john kirby said it last week, to be a full pledged military partnership. we think this is an ongoing pipeline. and if you look at this war in terms of chapters, episodes, the month of may has been defined by the overnight aerial attacks that we continue to see. and another one as understand 36 drones.defenses have managed to stop all of the drones hitting their targets. and it included a massive attack on kyiv and in the south and odesa. apparently russia was trying to

hit military objects, critical infrastructure enstall lagss. they have been stepping up the efforts as ukraine take more and more delivery of western weapons. this is as we hear also from prigozhin oig, the head of wagner, he has started to pull his forces out of bakhmut which they now claim to have taken. he has this staged media where he meets with soldier, says he will leave his ammunition in rations. we don't know that that is true. ukrainian spokesman says they can't confirm it, they think that it might be because of the enemy's exhaustion and we'll take advantage of this. so we don't know if this provides an opening for ukraine to move back towards bakhmut and we don't know why prigozhin is doing this, the in-fighting and division, why it is being

include wire fraud, bank fraud and money laundering. he is appealing the conviction for killing his wife and son. he was sentenced to life in prison. murdaugh's attorneys expect new charges will be resolved without a trial because he has been cooperating with prosecutors. and an update on the murder of gabby petito after a trip with her guy an say brian laundrie. a letter was found among his belongings, and it has not been made public, but laundrie's mother referenced getting a shovel and burying the body. the envelope was marked burn after reading. >> petitos are suing laundries. >> and the letter suggests that roberta laundrie, if she needed to bury a body, she'd bring a

with just a week until pride month begins in the u.s., target says it is removing some merchandise after the company and its employees became the focus of what it described as a volatile lgbtq campaign. target didn't specify which products would no longer be available, but did say it was removing items at the center of the most significant confrontational behavior. the company has celebrated pride month for a decade and sells a wide range of products. in a statement target says it is moving forward with its continued commitment to the lgbtq+ community and will stand with them as they celebrate pride month this month and throughout the year. elon musk is not shy about making his opinions known on divisive social issues.
