memorial day weekend is breaking records. the tsa screened more than 2.7 million people in airports friday. the busiest day yet this year. despite the crowds faa appears to be keeping up with the demand and relatively few flight delays and cancellations. over the pete muntean who is at reagan international airport. if this is where we are right now, pete s this a great foreshadowing of what the summer travel is going to be look like? [ laughter ] it >> it is showing that the airlines are keeping promise to staffing up and not being so

brittle like last year, kate. but it is showing that they cannot let their guard down because 2.72 million people flew on friday, and that is the highest number that we have seen since the 2020 downturn in air travel and bigger than the biggest day in 2020, and so this is celebrated by the passengers and transportation secretary pete buttigieg showed that the cancellation rate going into this weekend has been about one percent, which is a lot lower when you are thinking back to last memorial day when the airlines were canceleding about 2,700 flights in total, and kicking off the cascading meltdowns between memorial day and labor day with 55,000 canceled flights. and so now, while everybody is coming home all at once, the cancellations have been low, and

only 600 cancellations nationwide since thursday, and only 60 so far today. so far so good. we will see if the airlines can keep it together as people are coming home. today is a busy day according to the transportation secretary and the faa, and also, a really busy day on the roads. remember that memorial day is much more of a driving holiday, and aaa anticipated 50 million people driving 50 miles or more, and the worst time to travel is right this moment, between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. aaa says, so try to leave later if you can, and it depends what metro area you are in, and on i-59, between richmond and d.c., it is one of the worst stretches, and everyone knows it and the east coast, and traffic there is four-times the norm, so try to put it off, and aaa says wait

trying some initiatives to boost lifeguard, but they are falling short. >> we have had some initiatives of up to $3,000 to sign on, but that is not enough. we have had some kids who are influencers and they got jobs in retail and other jobs. but if we are focusing on the fire services, and the ems services managing them, that might workout. >> it is interesting the last point he is making, which is to develop the career paths for younger people who hope to be first responders to be recruited an become lifeguards. a few yards away from us, we can see the lifeguards on duty in regard to this exclusive beach which is really mostly for surfing. do your research. if you expect a lifeguard to be on duty, make sure they are

after the vote that happened to impeach the attorney general, the vote to impeach ken paxton, he called it a politically motivated sham, but one of the key republicans who went into this he said that the evidence is substantial, and he also called it alarming and unnerving. ed lavandera is following this. what is happening now with ken paxton? >> well, now we are waiting to find out when the lieutenant governor here in texas, who is also a republican, will schedule a trial on this. and so many are waiting to see when the calendar is going to unfold, but the math on the senate side is interesting. 31 state senators, and 12 of those senators are democrats. and then his wife is a sitting state senator here, and depending what she does, and there are calls for her to recuse herself which is going to

affect how many votes will be needed to convict ken paxton, and so it could be nine republicans or eight republicans depending how this works out in the coming weeks or months to determine ken paxton's fate. but all of it kind of really laying bear the tense politics in the circles here in the state of texas as many people are trying to figure out the best way of how to handle this politically. there are 20 articles of impeachment that ken paxton is facing, and kate, as you mentioned, there were overwhelming impeachment in the texas house, and equal number of republicans and democrats voting for this impeachment. so it is a stunning numbers which surprised a lot of people. that vote was 121-23. as i said, all eyes are on the state senate in figuring out exactly how this case will continue to play out in the months ahead, and what these senators on the senate side are

as a nation, and people have heard me say this for a long time. as a nation we have many obligations, but i believe in every fiber in my being we have only one sacred obligation, to prepare those we send into harm's way and care for them and their families when they come home and when they don't. it's a sacred obligation, not based on party or politics, but on a promise. a promise to unite all of us. there's nothing more important, nothing more sacred, nothing more american. together over the last two and a half years we worked to make good on that promise, passing more than 25 bipartisan laws to support our service members,

their families, caregivers and survivors. that includes the p.a.c.t. act, the most significant law in our nation's history. millions of veterans that were exposed to toxic substances and burn pits during their military service. pits the size of football fields thattin sin rate the waste of war such as tires, chemicals, jet fuel and so much more. to many of our nation's warriors who have selflessly served only to return home and suffer from the permanent effects of this poisonous smoke. too many have died. excuse the personal reference like my son beau, like sergeant first class heath robinson, for whom the act is named. last year after i signed the p.a.c.t. act, i handed the pen

on this day we come together again to reflect, to remember. but above all to recommit to the future our fallen heroes fought for. that generation of service members who died for a future grounded in freedom, democracy, equality, tolerance, opportunity, and, yes, justice. we use those words all the time. we've seen of late here and around the world that they have to continue to be fought for. not just for some but for all. this is more important than just our system of government. it's the very soul of america, a soul that was forged for our nation's first patriots, a soul that triumphed over trials and
