loss help curb drug and alcohol addictions. this is out new today on cnn. let us start with this reporting first on cnn. in the handing of the special counsel. a tape of donald trump saying that he held on to a classified document and a reporting that he said that he wanted to share it, and the limits of the ability to declassify material. and the former president is able to say that he can talk about a potential attack on iran. it was recorded in 2021 at a golf course in new jersey and a meeting between him and two others who were helping to write mark meadow's autobiography, and the special prosecutor has
7:01 am
already interviewed others on this recording. this is not if first to come to light. before the 2016 election, there was the recording of the record ing from tmz. and what are we learning now? >> we are learning that in the summer of 2020 after trump leaves the presidency, it is shifting our understanding of this documents investigation in a lot of different ways. first of all, it is an audio tape, and the sort of thing that the justice department would be seeking looking for a case. it is evidence, and the type of
7:02 am
evidence that we understand from sources not only the justice department has, but it is the evidence that people are asking about, and they have interviewed general mark milley that trump is saying that he got this document from a plan to get the attack from iran, and milley is the joint chiefs of staff, and someone who donald trump often was not, and very much in conflict with at the end of his pres presidency. so there is that, the evidence that they are getting the grand jury testimony about, and building up information about what they know about this meeting, and it is shifting our understanding of this mar-a-lago investigation, kate, because we are talking and it as the mar-a-lago investigation, and what happened last year with the boxes leading up to the fbi search of donald trump's property, and that is not the extent of the case, but it is the case of the justice department gathering evidence
7:03 am
and looking at the incident that they have on the audio recording of people in the room, and people working on the biography, and the communications aid to people in the room, that it happened in bedminster, new jersey, even a year before it was an issue, and criminal investigation, and it is when he was angry, and he is caught on the audio recording that he wants to declassify this document, and he wants it to be declassified. >> what more are you hearing from his team? >> it is classified as a leak. and he was just on cnn last night speaking to abby philip and kaitlan collin, and this is
7:04 am
what jim trusty said about this. >> the president under the presidential act can do what he wants with the documents while president. i will not dignify leaks that are unfair and dishonest. this is leak campaign. >> so he is not denying that the audio tape exists or the merits of this story, but our understanding is that he is still saying that there is this ability for the donald trump to declassify things, but our understanding is that this audio tape, and what trump is saying, and we have not heard it specifically, but it is going to undercut all of the defenseness that donald trump's team has used in court, or excuse me, before they are in court and in the public sphere that we are going to be gearing up and we may have to try this case.
7:05 am
>> caikatelyn, thank you for th and more for the former president to face. >> and he is the leading candidate who is arriving in iowa today for a series of campaign events, and he is going to be looking different from the past rallies, and jeff zeleny is in urbandale in iowa, and how is that is going to look different than we are used to. >> yes, the president is arriving in des moines, and he is going to be meeting with local republicans who are gathering for breakfast, and it is a meeting that the conservatives will have with 20 or 30 republican voters who will have guest candidates and this is going to be a slightly larger crowd, but for donald trump this is a smaller crowd, and that is indeed the point, and he is trying to go back to the point
7:06 am
that normal candidates do, and this a clear sign that he knows that this is a significant competition in the race, and he has to win over, and make the case to not abandon him, and support someone else, but it is happening on the same morning, john, of the revelations of the classified document investigation, and this is the presidential campaign, and the legal case is the ongoing classification in the jurisdiction, and this is the campaign that is going to de-link them, if you will, and this may not be top of mind for the voters here, and it is on the former president's mind, and he is going to be meeting with the conservatives here, and holding a lunch with the faith leaders and taping a town hall on fox news tonight, john. >> and part of the extent to which they will matter is going to depend upon which the other candidates choose to do with it,
7:07 am
and with all of the developments, and to that end, there is one soon to be candidate in particular who is also in the middle of it, and this is the former vice president mike pence who is going to be entering the race next week, and what are you learning about how he is going to position himself? >> well, we know that former vice president pence is going to make his announcement next wednesday here in des moines, and releasing a video, and then a town hall conversation with our own dana bash here. and in is extraordinary not only a former vice president running against a former president, and the tension between the two men, and the reason it is mattering is the election denialism and the insurrectionism, and it goes to the root of what the republican voters are going to decide, and not just mike pence, but the field is growing and
7:08 am
multiplying, and former new jersey governor chris christie is going to announce next week, and there a sense when we talk to voters in iowa, and bigger field helps one candidate above all, and this is indeed donald trump, and it could simply divide the rest of the field, and divide the never trump lane here. and john, in the first week of june here, you get the sense that this race is intensifying considerably, but the former president is coming here to the machine shed restaurant here showing that he is intent on winning this nomination again. >> i think that you will be spending a lot of time there in iowa which i know that you like and iowa likes. rahel? >> majority leader chuck schumer, and senate leader mitch mcconnell is looking to have bipartisan support for the bill
7:09 am
to be passed, but it has to clear two major hurdles. we have manu raja on capitol h hill, and we heard that it is just gaveling in, and what are you hearing? >> yes, talking to the republican senators who are not happy with the deal cut between the speaker, and the white house. one speaker lindsey graham said that he is not going to allow the negotiators to negotiate a car for him, and he called it a dumb idea, this issue of defense spending here, which he is concerned about, because he believes more money added as part of the agreement tied to raising national debt limit, and the republicans are criticizing this as not keeping up with the pace of inflation. he is demanding that there is more money for ukraine for a
7:10 am
final vote to go forward, and that is important, because for a final bill to go forward, you need an agreement with all 100 senator, and they all have different demands, and that is what they are working through to try to resolve all of the demands, and some want amendment votes, and some want commitments, and when they do that, they can lock in the final vote to occur, and we do believe this is going to pass tonight once that is dealt with. i spoke to the number two democrat, dick durbin, and he does not like the concessions from the president either, but he is concerned that the other option is the first ever default on the u.s. debt. >> default is not an option, and
7:11 am
so i will have to swallow hard, and so will others, but it will have to pass. >> and that is going to lead to a bitter standoff between the bitter ne grgotiations between president and the speaker of the house kevin mccarthy. and so it has been two weeks of intense negotiations. >> and two weeks of jitteriness in both chambers. and a bullet hole and the trial of the man who is accused of killing 22 people in a synagogue.
