donald trump and ron desantis are kicking off the campaigning going after each the other not after policy, but how he pronounces his name. and venmo and how a watchdog company says that your money could be lost for good. and the live fire drills lost in south korea, and simulating a full scale attack from the north. this is cnn "news central."
7:01 am
the job support job report out shattered expectations. employers added 329,000 jobs which is way more than the 190,000 that was expected. the jobs did tip up to more people entering the workforce looking for jobs. the federal reserve is looking to this report as to whether or not to raise more the interest rates. >> wow. this is more than was thought. you are looking at the big headlines of the big companies doing the layoffs, but small businesses can finally get their hands on workers and hire.
7:02 am
and the hiring here is broad based and centered here. tech workers and hospitals and nursing homes and construction sites and everything but manufacturing, because there is a little bit of weakness in manufacturing, and it is showing strong hiring. >> it is showing the signs of resiliency in the signs of everyone taking the 39,000 jobs and new added, and christine, you pointed out new interesting numbers related to women. >> the workforce sales force of women 29-54, the biggest share of those in history are working, and two reasons, the hybrid work makes it better for situation for women to be working, better management, and also high inflation might mean that they have to go to back to work. >> this is the jobs report here, christine romans, and people can see it going up.
7:03 am
>> and the fed has been raising the interest rates 14 or 15 months, since march of last year, and this economy has reci recited 4.5 million jobs since the fed has been trying to cool off. so the average monthly job gain is 163, and you don't see any of them here, because every month is stronger than a typical month since the pandemic. >> christine romans, wow. >> wow. >> and jeremy dimon is there, and what are the officials saying? >> well, that rethrilled with the number, and president biden is saying that it is a good day for the american economy and worker, and though he does not address the fact that the american unemployment rated tick up 3.7 to 3.9%, this is a stretch of 16 months straight of
7:04 am
unemployment under that level, and wages are continuing to grow. what is also clear, and something that the president wanted to note, and that we might hear from the president tonight in the oval office address is that the debt ceiling deal is linked to the future of the economy, and that it is going to protect some of the key policies, and that he says is the evidence that it is going to work, and due to the historic action taken by cob ngress this week, that the plan is going to work in communities throughout the plan, and that this is his historic, and the economic recovery that the workers have made in the last two years. the debt ceiling deal is not just protecting the inflation reaction act which the white house made off of the table, but it is clearing the decks for rest of president biden's turn, and not only taking another debt
7:05 am
ceiling plan off of the table in 2025, but to incentivize congress not to have another shutdown in the next year, and clearing the way in the same time, and on the messaging front for the president to continue to talk about the impacts of the policy, and on focusing on some of the key legislative accomp accomplishments. >> yes, the president is going to talk to the nation tonight at 7:00 and i expect the new job numbers to be part of it. so disaster averted. today, the president is going to sign into law, the bipartisan deal and avoid the disaster that jeremy dimon was just talking about. the nation would have run out of money by monday. and we expect the president to speak about all of this tonight. how did we get to whirlwind?
7:06 am
the house passed it 179-136 and then last night the senate passed it 63-36. that suspends more spending bills past the presidential election. and it is going to also look at some of the military spending and caps non-defense spending, and protects veterans' medical care. it also expanding work
7:07 am
requirements, claws back covid-19 relief funding and cuts irs funding, and restarts student loan payments. what else are you hearing? >> well, it is going to avert the default, and so there are people on the far left and far right who are unhappy with the debt ceiling bill, but it is a coalition that we will see again, because we have spending deadline come up in the end of september, and the lawmakers will have to work together with some of the same members that you saw in the negotiating room that you saw in the last several weeks, but this is what chuck schumer, and joni ernst said about the deal. >> i hope that the maga republicans said that this strategy of trying to hurt
7:08 am
americans unless they get their way is going to be something they don't get their way. >> and this is a good deal for now. >> you can hear them there that the next fight is on the spending process, and they have top line numbers on how much they can spend over the next several years, but you have to get into the nit ti get ti of what is going to be cut, and anything to remain the same, and that is to be determined by the whole appropriations process that we can look forward to this summer, kate. >> look forward to, and a whole lot behind that, and i can see it in your eyes, lauren. oh, wait, lauren, before you go, and i did want to ask you, because we have been hearing for it a long time from many of the democrats, but in the aftermath of this crisis, we have heard
7:09 am
from some top democrats that now is the time to do away with the debt ceiling altogether, and where are things with that? >> yeah, a number of them calling for this including democrat brenden boyle calling for it last year the take care of this calling for it to end, but this is what brenden boyle said recently. >> yes, i needs to be incredibly reformed, because it is dysfunctional process. this is nothing to do other than avoiding disaster. >> and that is what you heard from boyle, and in a divided congress, it is unlikely to reform a process though even though it is messy, it did get
7:10 am
republicans some of the spending things they wanted, and it is hard to believe they would be able to come on a bigger table. and now, joining us is the former adviser to the president on economic policy, we welcome in ben. what do you believe this labor market numbers says about the overall market? >> well, nothing more to say about this other than it is white hot, and no other time to be an american worker, and when you are looking at the labor force participation rate, and noting that there are historic
7:11 am
levels to the people coming back to the workforce, and this economy is not perfect, but when it is coming to the lay bor market, things are pretty good. >> what does this mean for the fed's big decision at the end of the month, so do you see the soft landing in the numbers? >> yeah. i think that it is going to lend some weight to the notion of a soft landing, and you did see softness and broader measures of the labor market and underemployment, and the weakness here, and the markets are expecting pause in june, and then perhaps we will see what happens with the inflation data with the hike later on this july. >> wu but we are saying that
7:12 am
with the debt ceiling done, when the president is going to speak tonight from the white house, it feels like an important message for him, and what should the message be when he is going to talk to the nation? >> well, it is a big moment, and it is a huge win for the american people. there was a real chance that we would see a debt ceiling default. i mean, i have been in the policy business for decades, and i have never been so pessimistic about going through the x-date and how the president and senate to come together is so positive. this is a third major bi-positive message to get through congress, and so this i
7:13 am
track record on this is pretty good today. >> i also want to get your take on the conversation of where i ended the conversation with lauren fox of this sort of renewed talk from democrats after avoiding disaster and it is time to abolish the dedebt ceiling altogether, and do you think that it is nice or unlikely do you think that it should happen now? >> yeah, the debt ceiling is a threat to the u.s. economy. it is unfortunate that we have an obscure law that introduces the uncertainty when congress feels like they want to make it a political football. it is not good for the u.s. markets or the u.s. treasury or the u.s. economy -- >> but it is the only enforcement mechanism to get the u.s. lawmakers for better or worse to get the house in order,
7:14 am
and is that a good thing? at line. there are some bills coming out to have them show some constraint on the big increases of the deficits without introducing the uncertainty every time we come up against the debt ceiling. we want reform, and now ways of check out the deficits. s this is only based on 10% of the discretionary spending and nothing on the budget side. so look, we may have lost some progress on the debts and deficits, but we didn't.
7:15 am
we made tiny progress, and only in a very small way. i am hoping that the congress can put something into order that can replace something that has been in place for years with very little concern. >> that would be very great after something like this. >> i hesitate to say it is the first. they seem to get into this every time there is a debt ceiling. >> i am still suffering from the wounds of the last debacle in 2018. >> and now, we are looking at the leading gop candidates positioning themselves against each other. trump has been criticizing desantis, and the florida governor is striking a balance to introduce himself while standing up to the president
7:16 am
po poking at each other, including his name. >> you don't change your name in the middle of the election. >> it is so petty and juvenile, and that is what the voters don't like what they want. >> that is why he is not in the white house now, because he is looking at things that vote sers don't think matters. >> it was interesting the back and forth on how governor desantis says is his name. what does that tell us about what he is going to say in the next few days. >> it shows us that they are going to mix it up, and desantis is trying to get a focus on the primary as they are going back
7:17 am
and forth. desantis is saying that he can serve for two terms if he is elected and trump had an answer for that yesterday with the back and forth. >> you have to be mission-focused, and you cannot be distracted with any of this. it is going to require a daily grind for not just one term, but i believe two full presidential terms. >> every time he says eight year, i wince, because if it is going to take eight years to turn this around, you don't want him, you don't want him as the president. >> why didn't he do it the first four years. >> why didn't he do it the first four years, and that is the heart that desantis is saying going after trump. look, the um artrump years may e as great as you remember it. he is going after the policy side, and accusing him as soft
7:18 am
on crime, and the amnesty of immigrants, and he is trying to convince the voters that he is going to be a better steward, and very little back and forth of desantis and the other candidates in the race, and now he is in south carolina where nikki haley and tim scott the current senator are running as president as well. >> a number of pictures of the signs of ron desantis who is speaking there in south carolina. and there is an old saying that if the top two go after each other, it opens up the way for a third. kate? >> coming up, 3wi8 cosby is facing a new sexual assault that

closed the investigation into former vice president mike pence and the handling of classified documents. back in january, cnn was the first to report that attorney general found documents marked classified at his home in indiana, and that search was resumed after they found classified documents outside of joe biden and thes why house. we get to the breaking news. katelyn polantz has part of the story, and paula reid with the other part of the story, and tell us what we know about the now investigation being closed? >> well, as of yesterday, the justice department told mike pence and his lawyers, they will not be bringing any criminal charge, and this is the end of the investigation into classified documents that were found in mike pence's home in ind
