entitlement reform. yes, we do it's the reality. is it going to hurt? yes. >> reporter: she sought to walk a careful line an abortion policy. she said she's pro life in her words, saying simply would not happen in a deeply divided congress, that could be one of her challenges as she goes forward trying to win over republican primary voters but she made the case it's time for consensus. >> i don't judge anyone for being pro-choice, any more than i want them to judge me for being pro-life. what can we do with consensus. we come to consensus and say what can we all agree on? i think we can all agree on banning late-term abortion. i think we can all agree on encouraging adoptions making sure foster kids feel more loved not less. >> reporter: after going issue after issue to ukraine and klein, one voter said she is a fresh of fresh air.

dash, as he referred for his own bid june 7th, 8:00 p.m. in des moines, 9:00 a.m. in hong kong, here on cnn. police say they found no survivors from a small plane that crashed on sunday, the ntsb will start investigating later today. the plane approached the u.s. capitol causing concern that fighters jets were brought in to intercept it. >> that sound was a sonic boom heard throughout the region caused by the f-16 scrambling. officials were unable to make contact with the plane's pilot before it crashed. natasha bertrand has more. >> reporter: a loud sonic boom

was caused by u.s. f-16 fighter jets that were scrambling to intercept an aircraft that traveled over washington, d.c. and was unresponsive. the fighter jets were call nld, in coordination with the faa, to try to intercept this aircraft where the pilot was not making contact with the f-16 fighter jets. ultimately, the plane did crash in southwestern virginia. hour the defense department said the f-16s it did not actually shoot down that aircraft. now, according to norad which released a statement sunday that aircraft did fly over washington, d.c., essentially, violating the airspace. because the pilot was unresponsive, the faa worked with the pentagon in order to try to intercept this aircraft before it could potentially crash. the civilian aircraft was intercepted by 3:00 p.m. eastern time.

and according to the pentagon, the plane crashed near the george washington national forest in virginia. there were four people on board this small aircraft. however, we do not yet know the conditions of those people at this time. natasha bertrand, cnn, washington. we're now getting a new look at a near collision in the taiwan strait that sent u.s./china relations soaring. this video shows in detail, a chinese military ship directly in front of a u.s. destroyer. on saturday, you can see there's very little for era the error t. the ship had to slow down to avoid a collision. how is china explaining this, christi? >> reporter: yeah, we just heard from the ministry of foreign affairs, what they said, according a spokesperson in just the last hour, the actions taken

by the chinese military were completely reasonable and safe, and china is opposed to the u.s. causing trouble in the china strait. the u.s. tensions are clearly in focus, specially what happened over the weekend, on saturday, we had that scene of warships from china and u.s. involved in a near collision. let's bring up video of the incident. what was happen, the u.s. and canadian navies were staging a routine transit through the twain strait. and then, course to the u.s. military, the chinese vessel came within 150 yards of the u.s. destroyer. right in front of the ship and that forced the american vessel to slow down to avoid a collision. now, hours after this incident took place, you know, we heard from china's defense ship who was at the sing gore security conference, and he accused the u.s. of creating chaos in the region. this is what he says, this is

from china's defense chief, he said they, in reference to the u.s. are not here for innocent passage, they are here for publication. lee also said in singapore that the u.s. could seek common ground. keep in mind, they rejected that offer from secretary chief lloyd austin. at the singapore conference, lloyd austin expressed deep concern about the high level of military action. he says for responsible leaders the right to talk it is anytime, the right time to talk is every time, the right time to talk is now. the u.s./china relationship is at its lowest point in decades. there's no contact at the high level between these two militaries, even in the wake of the latest close call involving the militaries of these two

superpowers. back to you. >> thank you. ♪ russia ace it has thwarted a, quote, large-scale ukrainian offensive in the southern donetsk region. it released this video. >> moscow said that ukraine tried and failed to push through a front line area with ukrainian vessels and they refused to comment. >> but ukraine is sending a strong message on social media urging silence around the counteroffensive and saying it will not announce its plans for the world to hear. you're looking at that video there. clare sebastian joins us now in the studio. clare, what more do we know about what the russians claim is the thwarting of a major offensive? >> so, we only have the russian claim on that as of now, it came out from the ministry of defense

they say it happened sunday morning in the donetsk region. they're making quite a lot of this saying it used quite a few ukrainian brigades and destroyed equipment. several hundred ukrainian troops. of course, we're very careful of any claims of troops losses in this war. they're saying that the dmernd chief of the russian forces and head of the operation in ukraine was in one of the command and control conditions in that area at the time. clearly awaits to project his authority in the face of what we know a considerable amount of infighting within the russian troops but the ukrainian haven't commented officially on it. we haven't been able to various it. the one thing we have from the ukrainian side is a warning from the communications director that russia, they say, will be stepping up or being very careful around any with the counteroffensive warning they might be putting out old video and things like that.

clearly, the counteroffensive, any shaping to the operations that led up to it we have to be careful it also happening in the information space. >> to the dissident russian military, claiming they've taken russian soldiers they're going to hand them to the ukrainians, that is correct? >> yes, two dissident groups made up of russian nationals who say they are now in bell, saying that if he came, he would be able to hand the soldiers back. but the two groups did not turn up at that meeting so they say they will hand the prisoners over to the ukrainian side. so, we don't know, we haven't had updates as of now it does speak to the way that part of

result in a 35-year sentence. >> the prime suspect in the death of the teenager natalee holloway will be temporarily transferred this weekend. peruvians will hand van der sloot over on thursday to return him to american authority. >> van der sloot is expected to stand trial for allegedly trying to extort holloway's family after she disappeared. she was last seen alive 18 years ago, leaving a nightclub in ar aruba. an australian woman who spent four decades in prison for the death of her children has been pardon. she's been convicted on three counts of murder and one count of manslaughter. >> she's citie ing genetic reas for their deaths.

♪ california says 16 migrants from colombia and venezuela were flown to the state capitol in a private jet and dropped off at a church without prior warning. >> they were allegedly left without any shelter. cnn's camila bernal has the story. >> reporter: officials here in california say they will get to the bottom of this. it's now an ongoing investigation, both the governor here and attorney general here in california, say they met with these migrants that according to the nonprofit group that's taking care of them say is 16 people from venezuela and

colombia, all in their 20s and 30s. now, in terms of their journey, we know they were in texas and they were taken to new mexico. and in new mexico, they boarded this private jet that brought them to sacramento, california. once they were here in the state of california, they were dropped outside of the offices of diocese of sacramento. and according to officials here there is going to be investigation into all of this. and of course, the documentation that these migrants have. according to the attorney general in a statement that he released, this is what he's saying about that documentation. she says, we can confirm these individuals were in possession of documentation purporting to be from the governor of state of california. it goes on to say, state sanctioning kidnapping is not a public policy choice it's immoral and disgusting. the attorney general is looking at options here for the people

that either arranged the transport or transported the migrants. and he also said he's looking into who paid for all of this and whether or not these mi migrants were misled in coming to california. there's a faith-based nonprofit organization that is taking care of these migrants. they say they will continue to support them. they also say the migrants had no idea where they are and where they are going. and how they got here and what happens next with the legal process. here's a representative from that nonprofit group. >> while, we're heavy to receive them and welcome them and give them whatever support they need, they will be in trouble, if they don't show up at the court hearing that's been scheduled for them. >> of course, there's a lot of questions as to happened here in california. and who sent these migrants to california. but officials here saying they will investigate, while also treating these migrants with

dignity and respect. camila bernal, cnn, los angeles. california's attorney general says there is evidence pointing to florida's involvement in the treatment of these migrants. >> they're saying that they were given false promises about virtual system representatives being willing to help them find jobs if they got on this plane and went to another location. they were manipulated. they were mistreated. they can abused and exploited. the first thing that happened when they got here, someone lied to them. told them they would help them find that work that they hoped for and dreamed of. instead, they deserted them and dumped them are in sacramento and didn't lift a finger. this was the same m.o. when migrants were moved to martha's vineyard, in massachusetts, they

were moved to multiple locations. this is part of an official act and budget outlay in the state of florida. it's called their voluntary transportation program. they're hired the virtual systems state of florida has to identify migrants in florida, not in florida, in texas, and move them to other states. so there's a pattern here, there's a documentation here, the document we have in our possession, says the state of florida. we believe gunfire desantis is behind it. and he has displayed this xenophobia and the willingness to treat people as political pawns, it's wrong and we're getting to the bottom of it. >> cnn has reached out to officials from texas and florida for comment. the so-called wilderness wildfire has been burning in michigan and now 95% contained.

part of the highway shut down because of the smoke and flames has now been reopened. investigators are saying they know what started the blaze. it was a camp fire on private property. at least 19 people have been confirmed dead after a massive landslide in china, it happened early sunday morning. a chinese broadcaster said part of the mountain collapsed and crashed into workers' facilities at a mining facility. state media says the rescue phase is over and an investigation is under way. and in one of the town's deadliest train crashes. >> crews are restoring service by wednesday. officials say one of the two damaged tracks is now back in operation. at least 275 people were killed and more than 1,000 injured. >> authorities claim the number of casual this at the train's high speed at impact.

ivan watson is there he takes us through the devastation and explains what's next for investigators. >> reporter: this is the scene of one of the deadliest railroad disasters that india has seen in its modern history. on friday night, at least tree plains two, passenger trains and a cargo train, they derailed and collided here after the dark. so what you see alongside the tracks here is at least 20 railroad cars like this one which was reserved for passengers with disabilities. and you can still see the luggage, the belongings, of the many people who were on board when this terrible accident took place. the loss of life is simply staggering. at least 275 people killed, more than 1,000 people wounded. and the authorities say at least 100 of those survivors are in need of critical care. the disaster zone runs, as far as the eye can see here with

railroad cars scattered on the side of the road. and hundreds of workers here in just brutal heat and humidity, with heavy equipment, and also doing a lot of the work here by hand, with picks and shovels, trying to reopen the road. as you can see here, more of the railroad cars in this terrible accident, the indian prime minister came to share condolences with the families of victims, with the survivors to call for an investigation. the cause has been identified as a change in the electronic interlocking here. and some have been would yous from top government officials to bring to justice anybody who is responsible for this accident. but it highlights both the importance of the railroads for india. more than 13 million people a day move around on trains in

india. but also a tragic history of accidents with more than 16,000 people killed to government statistics in 2021 alone. in railroad accidents. the authorities insist that this stretch of railroad will be reopened and operational again by wednesday morning. a bigger question will be how to make the trains in this country and its ageing infrastructure safer for future use. ivan watson, cnn in eastern india. saudi arabia dying to slash oil production. the white house says it's mainly focused on prices for u.s. consumers. saudi arabia it cutting output by 1 million barrels a day in order to boost prices. >> but u.s. officials say they simply want to assure i meets demand so gasoline prices stay low. they dropped significantly over the last year, largely because

the top stories this hour. the ntsb will begin investigating the site of a small plane crash in southwest virginia. police say two survivors have been found so far. it happened close to the u.s. capitol which came close to military who sent fighter jets to intercept it. and wide scale in the donetsk region. moscow tried to push through the front line area with tanks and armored vehicles. it's unclear if it was a counsel offensive. the lgbtq and the university of tennessee is celebrating a victory. a federal judge has a law limiting drag shows answer constitutional. the judge said the law restricts freedom of speech but conservative lawmakers aren't done fighting back. cnn's rosa now reports.

>> reporter: a federal judge in shelby county, memphis, shelby county, saying, quote, as a matter of alone the adult entertainment exact content and viewpoint restriction on speech. the ada was passed from the impermissible purpose of chilling controversial speech. we did receive a statement from the attorney general who said in part, the scope of this law has been misrepresented in public by those more interested in pressing a narrative than in reading the statutory text. the adult law remains in effect outside of shelby county. thy law prevents minors from exposure to sexually scomplesive performances. he said his office is reviewing the order and they do plan to review at an appropriate time. cnn spoke to one of the co-hosts

practices, he is one of 100 suing the mirror newspapers with allegations that they published between 2001 through 2011, mainly through phone hacking. prince harry has been selected among four to gift evidence. the court behind me is hearing the claims over the next three days. it's unclear which of these days prince harry will appear in the stands to give evidence. of course, this is something that he has been very vocal about. we've heard from the mirror group newspapers, they've contested these allegations. they say that their senior editors were not aware of any wrongdoing at the time of these claims. in fact, they say some of these claims have been brought too late to be considered by the court. but this is a case which featured more than 100 claimants. very notable physician, celebrities, sports stars, other notable high-profile figures including prince harry who all

allege that the mirror group newspapers invaded their privacy in order to publish these details featuring personal information. of course, prince harry has expressed he wishes to settle this. of course, he doesn't want to settle, he wants to see this through, reform of media practices for those held accountable. he's been vocal in the past, with his netflix and media invasions and particularly how this has impacted his own mental health, that of his wife meghan markle, and his late mother princess diana so this is a hugely personal issue but prince harry will be in the stands in a very different environment than we have seen in the past where he has given interviews with perhaps people he's more familiar and more familiar with the circumstances. he will face cross-examination during this court hearing. when he does give evidence, the concern, concern for the royal

an update on a story we're following in india. a young man has been found unconscious but alive by workers after restoring damaged track following friday's falts train derailment. that's according to the cnn affiliate. we're told the man was found near the site of the accident and is being rushed to the hospital for serious head and hand injuries. >> at least 275 people were killed and more than 1,000 in the accident. authorities blame the actions on the high-speed impact. we'll have a live report coming up from the scene on "early start." research offered for lung cancer patients. clinical trial results show a pill taken daily after surgery can consult in half the risk of death from the most common form

of the disease. the drug reduced the risk of recurrence inpatients. lung cancer accounted for 1.8 million deaths each year. hollywood directors have reached a tentative deal with movie and television studios on wages, workers and ai and more. this comes the writers strike continues. chloe melas has the details. a truly historic deal, i'm going to break that down for you, there are 19,000 directors gild members, they wanted more money. they wanted artificial intelligence and streaming concerns addressed. and looks like they got that. so there's going to be a 5% increase in the first year. assistant directors are going to see their work hours cut by an hour. many or overworked but underpaid. in the contract, ittal bans live ammunition on the set. this is coming a little over a
