his investigation of the handling of classified documents, attorneys for donald trump were spotted at the justice department. what we know, ahead. ukraine says there won by an announcement about a counter-offensive, but kyiv does say force versus advanced. so, has it begun? critical drugs against cancer, but the united states doesn't have enough. what the fda is doing to address that shortage. we're following these story and more, all coming into "cnn news central." new developments in the investigation of donald trump. lawyers for the former president wrapped up a lengthy meeting at the justice department today. this is video of those trump attorneys leaving the justice department this afternoon, following an extensive

face-to-face with doj officials. this came taft attorneys requested to meet with merrick garland. the talks could signal the special counsel's investigation into trump's handling, as well as possible obstruction is in the final stages. evan perez joins us now. two questions for you. first one, 90 minutes, not a short meeting. do we have any idea what went on? >> we don't. we spent some time, chasing, trying to figure out where the lawyers went. we do know they ended up on the fourth floor, which is the floor where the deputy attorney general's office and other offices are. one of the things we know also is that the attorney general was not planning to meet with them. that's what the trump lawyers said they wanted. they said they wanted a meeting with the attorney general to complain, essentially, about the tactics that were being used by

the special counsel jack smith. we don't know the specifics of what those complains are, but one of the thing we have heard in the last few days is this complaint that the special counsel obtained what they believed to be privileged material, things that normally are shielded from prosecutors, but which they went to a court and got a judge to get permission to take possession of. >> now, we now that trump's attorneys asked for this meeting. this would be simply the justice department responding to that, but we also know the special counsel appears to be close to wrapping up this investigation. could that meeting broadband have both? >> absolutely. it's possible the meeting took the form that a lot of lawyers often getting, defendant lawyers knowing what could be happening, will ask for a meeting for the justice department. it's not unusual for you to get

that kind of meeting. so it's possible. we know, again, jim, from observing these at the courthouse, the grand jury handling this case has not met since this time last month. we know they were expected to come in this week for at least one or more witnesses. again, those are things that sometimes you have what they call wrap-up witnesses, witnesses who have come in and spoken to investigators. you want to bring them into the grand jury before you get to the final step. we don't know who might be in indicted. it can't be the former president or the people handling these documents. >> so much to watch. evan perez, thanks so much. tem . >> absolutely. jennifer rogers joins us, a former federal prosecutor. thank for you sharing part of your afternoon with us. the idea of prosecutorial

misconduct, trump's attorneys have not given any specifics on what they might have, but in theory, what kind of evidence would they need to prove that argument? >> well, boris, that's a good question, if there's something going awry with the case, they think the prosecutors are breaking the rules, maybe something inappropriate was done with a witness, for example, then you go to the inspector general. the fact we don't have team trump either releasing publicly for something they believe has been done improperly, or going to the inspector general, suggests to me they don't have specifics. the one thing they have said, they complained about weeks, but i think if it was the special counsel leaking, i think we would have heard that.

>> the former president and his team have not been shy to go public with a number of things before this, so that's an interesting point. geffen the evidence we've heard that the special counsel has on the former president, do you think this might be a hail mary move on the part of his team? >> i think maybe it's more like asking for a typically meeting that defense lawyers often take with doj, in the guise of something they wanted to sound more sinister, like doj was doing something wrong. i'm not surprised they want to go in to make a pitch for why donald trump should not be indicted, but it sounded almost like the charges weren't conceding, instead they say we're complaining about misconduct, and probably in the end they had a more typically meeting than they were leading the public to believe.

what does it say that the attorney general was not in the meeting. anything to read into that? >> i think the attorney general will be in almost none of these meetings. that's a typical thing. that suggests it was a fairly typical meeting. they weren't treating it as anything special. i don't think garland would have particularly undermined jack smith. so i think this is how they meetings normally go. you sit down with the people who are working on the case under him. i think they're just going by the book. >> always appreciate your perspective. jennifer rodgers, thank you for the time. >> thanks. in russia's war on ukraine, a cnn exclusive shedding light on who may have launched this drone at the creme ling a months ant. sources say u.s. intelligence

believe it was likely sabotage agents inside russia who are working for ukraine. the sources add that ukraine has cultivated this network of sympathizers, supplying them with cements drones. in a taka, what does ukraine say about this network? >> when we asked ukraine, that ukraine had been cultivating this network of sympathizers and well-trained actors within russia, the secure service gave us a rather colorful quote. what they said was that we will comment on instances of cotton only after our victory, adding that cotton is burning and will continue burning. cotton is a slang word that they used to superintendent explosion. these mysterious, fires, explosions, drone strikes will

continue. this is something that u.s. official say is actually a smart strategy. publicly they have said we don't want to see ukrainian troops, because we don't want the war to expand, but privately they say it's a savvy military strategy, because it would divert attention away from the battlefield and towards actually protecting its own territory in russia, not to mention it will essentially bring the home to everyday russians. so, what we're told by our sources is that the ukrainians have developed a sophisticated network of agents inside russia, who are believed to have carried out that attack on the kremlin. last month, with those two drones that, of course, the kremlin was so outraged about. again, this is something that they see as a relatively low cost, low-risk way for ukraine

to divert attention away from the battlefield and toward protecting its own territory, breen anna. >> great reporting, natasha, thank for you that. a top ukrainian official repeated today there will be no announcement when the major counter-offensive against russia is underway. also today, a defense minister did note the ukrainian forces have, quote, advanced in several directions in the east in this long-disputed donetsk region. general mark milley says ukraine is ready for what lies ahead. >> i think it's too early to tell what outcomes will happen. i think the ukrainians are very well prepared. as you know, the united states and other allied countries around the world have provided training, advice, et cetera to support the ukrainians. they're in a war for the very survival of you've crane, and

has greater meeting for the rest of the world, for europe, really for the united states, but also for the globe. >> joining us now is cnn military analyst cedric lleyton. you heard what we are just hearing now, this ukrainian offensive is taking place in several direction, according to an official. are we seeing the beginning of this? >> i think we are, brianna. when you look at the various places they could attack, you're looking at this junction between the southern fronts and eastern fronts. you're also looking to the east towards here, and potentially, the area just to the northeast of kerr son. kherson,. >> russia is claiming they repelled a large-scale attack,

right where you're talking about there. ukraine has pretty much been mum, and we're seeing that. at the same time, you will see what's sort of happening. what do you make of this of the delay and quiet. when people are quiet, there's either no good news to report or keeping something secret in order to do something else. so in this case we're looking at several things going on basically down here where the russians were talking about potential hurting the ukrainians there. you also have a town that is a key point, and the very infamous city of bakhmut that we've been talking about for over nine months. both sides are reporting that the ukrainians are making gains. geffen that that's going on, there's a lot of mixed

mariupol. so they're essentially shaping the battlefield. they're also moving forces in ukraine. what they are doing here is very different from what they're doing over here. thus unconventional war fare with a purpose of destabilizing the russians and the russian response. >> can we look at what's happening in belgrade. this is the russian spokes in belgorod. >> what you see here, brianna, places that looks like they might be supply depots, also forested areas where people would hide tank, artillery placements. a lot of these are villages near belgorod in this tim heart case,

a vehicle is operating in international space. as i said earlier, we're going to keep flying, sailing, operating where international allows us to. it's an important concept that the united states will continue to stand up for. thank you. on ukraine, what is your understanding of whether a counter-offensive has begun? >> i will not be talking to the ukrainian military. i think you heard them say they're conducting offensive operations, but i won't go on that. what i can speak to is how hard we worked to prepare them to be ready. whether it's starting now or starting soon, whenever think decide to step up, whatever they decide to do, the president is confident we did everything we could over the last seven, eight, months or more to make sure they had the capabilities to be successful.

>> reporter: thanks. do you think all of these incidents are an effort to intimidate or impact other channels of communication, like you are trying to keep occupy? or do you see them compartmentalizing the military sort of realm for you guys trying to sell blinken over there or raimondo. >> it's difficult to tell. obviously when you fly and sail as aggressively -- you don't need me to tell you how aggressive that was -- you're trying to send some kind of message. at the very least, it's a statement of some sort of displeasure at our presence in that part of the world. as the president said very clearly in hi rosh man, we're a pacific power. we're not going anywhere. we have significant agreements in that area.

the vast majority of international economic trade flowing through the indo-pacific. we have needs there, and we're going to continue to stay there and continue to strengthen those partnerships. i can't speak for them, but if the message is we're not welcome or our presence needs to be diminished, or they want you to stop flying, sailing, operating in support of international, not going to happen. >> reporter: would you say you're continuing to make progress in setting up the visits? >> i think the fact we got two officials to beijing here while we're talking is a good sign. we want to keep those lines open. it's important, especially, as i said, now. yes, we are feeling like we are making progress no terms of opening up additional lines of communication.

>> reporter: thank you. i have two questions. security -- or even said last weekend that the united states -- with china and russia follow nuclear disarmament. as you know, north korea has nuclear weapons whether we i had -- identity or not. do you think north korea is a possibility of resolving the north korean nuclear issues or will you continue to wait for the talk? >> we're not waiting. we have made it clear to kim jong-un and the regime in pyongyang, we're willing to sit down without preconditions. it's not about waiting. we continue to send that message. what we haven't gotten is any indication that they're willing to engage in those kinds of

talks. the offer still stands. >> reporter: back to the other question, is there a possibility of sequencing the businesses differently. secretary yellen has talked about sequencing an issue, sort of implied that perhaps blinken should go first. given the challenges and the sort of political realm and the military realm, does it make sense to do the economics first? >> that is putting the cart way above the horse right now. we're glad to get this visit in beijing. we'll see what they come back with. clearly one of the goals was to advance the communication with the prc and see what we can do to get the high-level talks in place. we're hopeful.

the nato secretary-general succession, this is an issue. do you know whether the president continued to speak with the danish prime minister about that today, and whether he had any thoughts of having a woman lead the nato. >> that is not the purpose for the trip, not the purpose for the conversation. i sort of detailed in the opening statement what they're going to focus on. >> if i can shift greer. how do you all interpret -- >> we'll let them speak for their decision to cut production. we will stay focused on making sure there's a balance between supply and demand of and the price of gasoline continues to come, so you present will stay focused on what's best for the american people and best for our economy, to make sure we're looking at those needs.

we'll let the saudi arabians speak for themselves. >> india's prime minister is set to visit. i know there's a focus on the division from autocracies and deform sits. there have been questions about the health of india's democracy under narendra modi. >> india is a strong partner. you saw that in shangri-la, secretary austin announced some initial defense cooperation. of course, there's an awful lot of economic trade between our two countries. india is a member of the quad, a key friend and partner with respect to indo-pacific security. i could go on and on.

there's innumerable reasons that india matters, not just bilaterally, but multilaterally on very many levels. the president is looking forward very much to have been the prime minister here to talk about the issues, and advance and deepen that partnership and friendship. >> reporter: is the administration at all concerned about the health of india's democracy? >> india is a vibrant democracy. anybody that happens to go to new delhi can see that for themselves. i would expect that the strength and health of democratic institutions would be part of the discussion. look, we never shy away, and you're feesed to do that with friends -- but this visit is about advancing what is now and what we hope will be a deeper, stronger partnership and friendship going forward.

crash of a private plane in rural virginia that killed four people. the plane was a scess naismt a citation. testifies from tennessee to long island, new york, but instead of landing, it actually turned around and started flying south, and it crashed soon afterward. the plane's erratic path have the authorities putting the complex on elevated alert. fighter jets were scrambled. they were authorized to hit supersonic speeds, causing a massive sonic boom heard over the region. they tried to make contact with the pilot, but was unresponsive. listen. >> november 611, victor golf, washington center is looking for you 133.niper 9.

>> if you hear this transmission, contact us. >> let's take you live to the crash site. brian todd, what have investigators discovered close to where you are right now? >> reporter: we just gold a lowell update from the sheriff that they are now at the site of the crash, several miles into the terrain behind us. this is very steep terrain, extremely different to get to a crash site. it takes several hours to get in and back out. we may not get an update for several hours or possible even until tomorrow after the investigators get back from the site. what we have been told is that from first responders, when they got to the site last night, and again it took hours. several almost got injured getting there. that's how difficult the trek is. when they got there, they

spotted what was four or five recognizable pieces of plane, but one of these told me, quote, it was no bigger than a human arm. they had the plane left a sizable crater. they believe the plane impacted the mountains at a very steep angle. a dramatic and horrible scene deep into the mountains where ntsb investigators are liking at that site now. one thing they were looking for is to see whether the plane had any black box, the recorders. we are told this particular private jet was not required to have black boxes, it may not have anything in there, but some of these planes are outoutfitted with the boxes nonetheless. >> brian todd from vesuvius, virginia, thank you.

mar mary, thank you for being with us when you sea a plane flying a long distance away from where it's supposed to be, what are some of the causes you have seen create this scenario? >> surprisingly many times in the past. usually it's what's called a decompression of the aircraft, a rapid depression where, for example, a door or window blows out. or it can be what's called insidious, where the pilots don't realize it is happening until it is too late in other flights when jets have been scrambled to across the pilots, there have been cases where both

pilots have fallen asleep. in that case, when they were scrambled, they woke up the pilots and the plane and flight proceed and ended safely. usually it's a hiypoxia event o pilots incapacitated for other reasons. sometimes there's a -- >> mary, you mentioned jets that were scrambled in response to this plane. i'm wondering what the protocol is when a vessel like that enters restricted airspace. >> exactly what happened here. any aircraft. whether it's a pilot incapacitated or confused or someone intending ill intent. that's what the understandings and other countries have been trained to do.
