united states and all around the world. the dam breach in ukraine right now. fears it could lead to major construction and thousands of lives. how the pool guy at mar lago is factoring into the investigation of donald trump and his handling of classified documents. we're just hours away from prince harry taking the witness stand in a historic legal case against britain's tabloid media. we begin in ukraine where a major dam has been destroyed. president zelensky will have an emergency meeting to discuss the

situation. you can see water pouring out. ukrainian officials are planning evacuations and advising residents to do everything you can to save your life. ukraine and russia are blaming each other for what both describe as a terrorist attack. let's get you more on these developments that are unfolding right now. claire, do we know what caused the breach? can you situate that for us? where is the dam with respect to the front lines? >> it's on the front lines. on the edge of the river on the southern bank. it provides water to the southern area. it's south of the power plant that relies on water for cooling. the power plant is in various stages of shutdown.

a really critical piece of infrastructure. it has been occupied by russia since the beginning of this war. we're learning more in the last hour about the potential effects on civilians from the flooding. they're seeing signs of flooding according to the head of the ukrainian council. the water that was supposed to reach critical levels an hour from now. estimates have varied. signs of flooding is visible in settlements. the water is rising. they are starting evacuations of civilians from some areas. >> how does this affect ukraine's counteroffensive plans in the region? >> we don't know what the counteroffensive plans were in this region. we've seen an uptick in activity in the last day or so. they were forecast it was potentially trying to push

south, towards the sea if they are trying to push south, areas are flooded, forcing the river to do that. becomes much more difficult. one adviser to the zell ensky h deterred ukraine from doing so. russia has hit the residents of crimea. the water supplies are there. they exchanged them for certain opportunities for the offensive. that's the hint coming from the ukrainian side this morning. >> thank you very much. we'll bring you more on the war in ukraine later on the show, including the latest attacks across the border into russia. a swimming pool flood at mar-a-lago is raising suspiciouses of prosecutors looking into the handling of classified documents and

possible obstruction. it comes amid signs the investigation could be winding down. >> reporter: the top federal prosecutor handling donald trump after he left the presidency, that prosecutor took a meeting on monday with a team of defense lawyers representing donald trump. they met at the justice department headquarters in washington, d.c., along with a career official from the justice department who sat down with trump's lawyers. this is the sort of meeting that appears to be coming at the final stage or in a final stage of this criminal investigation around the former president. and around what happened at his estate, mar-a-lago. and potentially other places throughout his business empire. we don't know exactly what happened at this meeting at this time. but it is quite significant that people in the justice department would agree to meet with trump's lawyers whenever they had requested this.

there are potentially additional people that could be brought in to the grand jury investigation. we believe one witness will speak to a grand jury in florida this week. this is a significant moment for the justice department and for donald trump's legal peopteam a they prepare a indictment against the former president. we were able to understand the obstruction of justice part of the criminal investigation. that's because we learned and were able to confirm a flood that happened at mar-a-lago at the resort in october of last year. that flood flooded a room. there wasdraining of the pool in mar-a-lago, that went to a room that stored the videotape and the surveillance of the

property. the justice department has looked at a lot of things over the past year. one of the things that prosecutors pursued is what was happening and how was the trump organization responding to multiple requests for surveillance tapes. the maintenance worker that decided to drain the pool at mar-a-lago and caused the flood in the room, that person was caught moving boxes. it is a moment that prosecutors have been asking about, ask they ask about many different things that's happened with the surveillance footage and the moving of boxes at mar-a-lago in this investigation. the field of republicans seeking the party's nomination for next year's u.s. presidential election is growing. mike pence has filed his paperwork to run. he plans to announce his bid on wednesday, just ahead of his

appearance at a cnn town hall. this puts him toe-to-toe with his former boss, donald trump, who had this to say about pence's bid. >> i wish him a lot of luck. he's a nice person. we had a good relationship until the very end. i wish he would have put the votes back to the legislature and legislators, also. we disagreed at the last moment in time on that very issue. i wish he would did that. and i think he would be doing better in the polls. new hampshire's republican governor chris sununu, he won't be entering the presidential race. he has sharp criticism for trump's candidacy. >> the math has shown that he has no chance to win in 2024.

president early in the primary. that's what we're looking at for pence. >> let's look at president trump's ongoing legal troubles. why do you think they requested this meeting? is it normal? >> it's har 's to hard to say. it's clear that trump's lawyers are taking this seriously. while it's unclear if they're asking for a deal or to settle, that's a trademark reaction of the former president. he's always eager to make a deal and make things go away. that very well could be.

slams into an immovable object. you get trains overturned as if they were children's toys. days ago, this was the scene of one of the deadliest train disasters in history. the railroad has been reopened. and we can see a brand-new modern train moving down the tracks here. that's as scores of people are looking for loved ones. the accident was caused by a switching malfunction. a passenger train was moved on to a track on a track that had a train car, where there was an approaching passenger train coming from the other side.

that mistake led to catastrophic results. as you see, the alrrailroad has been reopened. another train is moving right now. the railroad system is essential to this country. 13 million people around around on trains in india. that's part of why authorities have worked so hard to reopen the rails after the train crash. this is an example of a railroad station in the indian countryside. it happens to be just within sight. you can see the lights where the terrible train crash happened on friday night. the next day, india's prime minister was supposed to go

inaugurate a new high-speed train. instead, had to rush to the crash to survey the recovery efforts and meet with some of the survivors. the indian government has great ambitions to modernize this country. there's a lot of work to be done to maintain aging and essential infrastructure. >> ivan watson joins me live from india. as you have been reporting, rail services have resumed. but the investigation into the crash is ongoing. what more are you learning about where that stands? we witnessed how officials were interrogating some of the railway workers that were in charge of signaling. this was taken place at the scene of the disaster zone.

authorities have promised to bring people to justice. it's not clear if the train was equipped with one of the accident ava dance systems. some say it did not have that. it could have prevented the disaster from taking place. maybe before rolling out high-speed trains, do you need to have slower trains equipped with some of this? as the railway is reopened, and we saw crowded passenger trains rolling through the crash sigte packed full of passengers. you can get a sense of how full the train was when the accident happened on friday night.

you have the grim work of identifying the victims of the crash. more than 180 of the victims have been identified. but there's a lot of difficult work to do. authorities are trying to get information to help with that. they pledged for free transport for bodies to back to open places. that's a big deal for families at low income levels. any of the talk, compensation, has pledged 500,000 rupees for the families who died. none of that replaces the loss of a loved one.
