hours, one day before he's set to walk into a federal court and face 37 criminal charges. >> those charges are related to his handling of classified documents after he left office. trump has denied any wrongdoing and railed against the charges and comments over the weekend. his former attorney general's also speaking out and criticizing trump's claim that he is being targeted and unfairly treated by the government. >> here, i think the government acted responsibly. they gave him every opportunity to return those documents. they acted with restraint. they were very defer rential to him and very patient. they talked to him a year to get the documents and he jerked them around. they finally get a subpoena what did he do? according to the government, he lied and obstructed that subpoena. then they did a search and found a lot more documents. i don't think they're even sure now whether they have everything.

so, they acted in a very patient way, and what they were met with, was according to the government and the indictment, very egregious obstruction. >> trump is planning to deliver remarks in the hours after his court appearance on tuesday. sources say that will happen at his bedminster new jersey golf club where he'll be hosting a fund-raiser. cnn's katelyn polantz has more from london. >> reporter: the detail and evidence collected in the case has begun to sink in. and donald trump's own attorney general, bill barr, one of his top people in his own administration who had gone to bat multiple times saying investigations throughout donald trump should not have been taking place previously was condemning the actions of the former president after he left the white house. because this indictment is so explicit and the evidence that it has, because of the photos of documents in a bathroom at

mar-a-lago, photos of boxes of documents spilled in a storage room. and then those 31 charges each representing a document that donald trump is accused of willfully retaining outside of the protected area of the federal government top secret doubts. classified documents. national security information. here's more of what bill barr had to say on sunday on fox news. >> and this idea of presenting trump as a victim here, a victim of a witch hunt is ridiculous. yes, he's been a victim in the past. yes, his adversaries have obsessively pursued him with phony claims. and i've been at his side defending against him when he is a victim. but this is much different. he's not a victim here. he was totally wrong that he had the right to have those documents. those documents among the most sensitive secrets that the country has. they have to be in the custody

of the akchemist, and kept them in a way in a way if he cared about national security your stomach would churn. >> reporter: here in a grand jury in florida, a process will kick off at this courthouse in miami. so donald trump currently is going to be traveling. because he needs to get here and face his charges in person. so, he's going to be traveling to miami on monday, along with his body man, walt nauta, a man also charged in this case, as part of the alleged obstruction part of this investigation. then they will stay at a resort -- at his resort, near miami, and then huddle with lawyers. they're going to have to talk to their lawyers what is expected on tuesday in federal court. trump will come to court on tuesday where he's going to have a lot of secret service

protection around him. it is possible there will be no live pictures of him or photographs of him coming into the building to face the charges for the initial appearance. there's no photos in federal court. there's no video inside the building either. so he'll have that proceeding, be read his charges and we expect him to enter a plea of not guilty at this time. afterwards, he's going to turn political begin. the legal part of the day will be done. and trump is also announcing he's heading back to bedminster, new jersey, where he has another resort and he will be giving a speech. katelyn polantz, cnn, miami. and in the city of miami, facing the hours in the courthouse ahead of donald trump's appearance on tuesday. francis suarez spoke about the proposals. >> i can tell you in miami, we're going to have a press conference on monday to talk about safety and security. we want to make sure that all of our citizens know that they're

able to express their first amendment rights. and at the same time, we're going to keep them safe and we're going to make sure there are no disorder. >> experts and cnn analysts are weighing in on the case and what impact it could have, not only on trump, but on the republican party as well. >> our system of government absolutely -- our system of justice, depends on people being innocent in proven guilty. it doesn't disqualify him. but his party should think twice about having as its standard-bearer someone who is at risk, it appears, major american secrets. the republican party has wrapped around -- it has wrapped itself around the u.s. army, u.s. military, understandably. they have a great military. our military depends on secrets. and keeping secrets. our military depends on the loyalty of those who have been entrusted with knowledge, for

knowledge, of military actions. but the republican party, if it wishes to be the standard-bearer and the defender of the u.s. military must stand up now for american secrets. >> some say with all of the evidence cited in the indictment, this could be the most serious legal trouble that trump has ever faced. >> the proof is so overwhelming. that doesn't mean we're not going to hear defenses from donald trump. but i worked on the classified document rules that the government cited in its indictment. and there virtually is no defense for this. anyone else who did this, once or twice, one or two documents would be looking at jail time. this volume 31 counts under the espionage act alone. and then the long pattern of alleged obstruction of justice, wow. the biggest legal jeopardy donald trump has ever faced by far.

>> we'll have more on this just ahead, including what some voters are saying about the indictment. officials in u.s. state of pennsylvania say it could take months to repair a section of a major highway that collapsed on sunday. this is interstate 95 in philadelphia which was heavily damaged when a fuel tanker truck caught fire beneath it. here's what one driver experienced as he drove near the area. >> at first, i thought, okay, this is just a brush fire. and i hit that bump which was startling, but it's also in a section where they're doing reconstruction. so, it all just kind of thought at the moment, okay, this is just, you know, a normal bump. a little brush fire. once i realized what happened, when i looked in my rear view mirror, i see knife, all of the cars stopping and then i learned shortly after that, that the road had just collapsed. >> city's mayor said no injuries

or deaths have been reported so far. local and federal investigators are now trying to find out what started the truck's fire. cnn's danny freeman has more from philadelphia. >> reporter: the big questions that we don't have an answer to yet are still why and how did this fire and this collapse happen. the governor and the city were not giving answers during a press conference sunday evening but i will tell you what we do know about how all of this wept down. basically before 6:30 sunday morning, there was a tanker truck sitting underneath i-95. that tanker truck caught fire, and that fire is what ultimately led to the collapse of the northbound lanes on i-95. the governor told us sunday that the southbound lanes also are not safe at this moment. currently, the truck is still trapped underneath that wreckage. we've been hearing throughout the day, jack hammering and heavy machinery working through the day to sift through that rubble. while there have been no reported injuries, the governor is saying they're working to see

if anyone was actually alive in that truck when the collapse happened. the pennsylvania department of transportation said there are 500 tons of concrete mess now sitting on the ground. that's what officials have to sift through. take a listen to what governor shapiro said when he laid eyes on this incident first. >> remarkable devastation. and i found myself, you know, thanking the lord that no motorists who were on i-95 were injured or died. it's just a remarkably devastating sight. one that our first responders, law enforcement and others contained very, very quickly. they got people out of harm's way. and now, under leadership of secretary carroll and others, the hard work of clearing the site, rebuilding it, will be under way and we're going to move as quickly as possible. >> reporter: now, governor josh shapiro said this cleanup could take, quote, some number of months. this could be a nightmare.

the pennsylvania department of transportation said this stretch of i-95 carries $150,000 every single day. it's likely the busiest in the state of pennsylvania. danny freeman, cnn, philadelphia, pennsylvania. australian authorities arrested the bus driver involved in a deadly crash in new south wales. and the prime minister is extending his deepest sympathies for those killed in the horrific bus tragedy. >> the initial report reports at least ten people were killed and others injured. the bus was returning from a wedding when it flipped on its side. >> a bus driver was immediately taken to the hospital and police demand that they do testing assessment. ukraine says russia is on the defensive when it comes to fighting around zaporizhzhia and kherson. this comes as ukrainian forces liberated villages along the front lines ukraine's defense

minister said three villages have been recaptured and russian paramilitary bloggers are worried that they're intensifying soon. >> meanwhile, russia officials say water levels are receding in the dnipro west bank. nearly 50 settlements are flood. it's been a week since it collapsed unleashing a torrent of water into the surrounding areas. >> clare sebastian joins us. obviously, ukraine is key to the counteroffensive, we're hearing about three villages being liberated. obviously, there's extreme operational silence from kyiv about the future plans. what do you know at this stage? >> i think all we can tell about the villages, that could fit and stretch out for weeks if not months, we can pull up video showing it cutting in half russia's gains so far. if you look at where that is top

line by russia in red that is the narrowest strip with the ukrainian territory with the sea of azoz. and fits with cutting off the land bridge to crimea. it's not just there we're seeing fighting. we're seeing pockets in bakhmut. and either they're keeping them guessing or perhaps there's probing activity. but i think that is key to understand this is as now a local counter offensive like we saw in kyiv in the spring of 2022 or kharkiv. it's a widespread hear. but this is a hard fight. according to sorts the dutch lost 16 u.s. vehicles bradleys, in the last several days. that's about half of what the supply has supplied in terms of those bradleys. russia is making a lot of these

attacks on western equipment and ukrainian strongholds of equipment and forces in general. military analysts will tell you much harder to attack in terms of defense. >> and in president zelenskyy's sunday night address, he said the icc has begun its probe of the dam disaster. what will that involve? >> yeah, we don't know yet. we have confirmed this itself, but zelenskyy saying this is on request of ukraine by the prosecutor's office that officials have already visited the site. we need to know where the parameters of the investigation are, whether it's a war crimes investigation. we know that the geneva convention covers the destruction of least damaging forces that could include dams. that might be part of the investigation, we don't know that. meanwhile, as you say, a week on, still doing rescues. house to have been evacuated. ukraine has evacuated 100 people from the russian side of the dnipro river and of course, the environmental assessments are unfolding.

>> clare sebastian, thank you so much. the mother of u.s. citizen travis leake detained in moscow on drug charges said she's yet to hear from anyone from the united states about his current status. cnn's jennifer hansler has details from washington. >> reporter: a court in moscow has accused u.s. citizen travis leake of drug dealing or in their words engaging in a business attracting young people and has said he'll remain detained there in russia in aft least early august. the state department confirmed travis' arrest and said there were officials from the embassy in moscow at his arraignment wednesday. travis' mother has not heard from the state department since sunday and is concerned about the well failure of her son being imprisoned there in russia. she's concerned about his well-being and health and said she would reach out to the u.s. government if she did not hear

from them by monday. now, this arrest comes at a time of very heightened tension between the united states and russia. we have seen them detain numerous americans. two of those americans, evan gershkovich and paul nehlen. and brittney griner was also arrested on drug charges. one thing that viewers should note, travis has been living in moscow reportedly since 2010. and about a decade ago he spoke with the late anthony bourdain about the state of repression in russia. he cited an incident that happened with mtv and his band and the russian government. take a listen to what he said about that. >> this was a documentary series about musicians standing up and risks their lives in some cases. standing up against government abuse of power, government corruption. and yet, a foreign government was able to editorially control what american viewers see on

that have lived around the volcano now in these centers. the government says 80% of the population has already been evacuated and they're working to move the rest to safety. now mayon has been spewing sulfuric gas and lava in the last 24 hours. let's bring up that dramatic video, the video that was just filmed last night evening. where you see the hot molten lava flowing. 3 out of 5 is the effect, and that signals the possibility of explosive volcano activity. any risk of danger zone, six-kilometer, or 6.5 mile radius has been prohibited. and local officials, in addition to evacuated the 13,000 residents from the area have evacuated 10,000 farm animals as well. i want to show you the map where

this volcano is located. it's located in the ale fence albay province. it's in the southeastern part of luzon island, 335 kilometers and 235 miles away from the manila, the capital. of course, the philippines is a country that's in the ring of fire. it's a place where activity of earthquakes and trerms are very, very common. and now all eyes on what mayon 0 going to do next. this is one of the most active volcanos in the philippines and look at it, it's known around the world because of his perfect shape, conical shape which has inspired stories and myths and artworks. while it's awe-inspiring, it's destructive and given what's happening now, volcan nothing els are warning a hazardous eruption is possible in weeks or even days. max and bianca. >> kristie lu stout, thank you.

now, they're making progress in efforts to obtain the large blazes in quebec. officials say the number of out of control has dropped from 72 to 44. now, more help is coming from around the world. by monday, about 1200 firefighters including more than 100 from france are expected to help in quebec. >> we're getting new images of the team who rescued the four children who had been missing in colombia's rain forest for weeks. this video aired on a local tv station showing indigenous scouts with the children. the four survived after a plane crashed killed their mother and two other adults. >> for the first time, we're hearing from the father of the children. stefano pozzebon reports. >> reporter: on sunday, the father of the four children who

were rescued who spent 40 days travelled to bogota, and spoke with reporters outside of the hospital where his children are receiving treatment. manuel actually joined the search and rescue teams and was in the jungle up in friday when his children were finally rescued. he said he never lost hope, not even when the stakes against him seemed so daunting. >> translator: we are indigenous people. i believe in the jungle which is our mother. and that's why i've always kept the faith and would say that both the jungle and nature have never betrayed me. >> he also said that his children were very weak when he visited them in the hospital. we can only imagine how affected they are both mentally and physically by surviving this experience. the doctors are saying they expect the children to stay under medical observation between two and three weeks. they're also receiving

♪ welcome back to "cnn newsroom." i'm bianca nobilo. >> i'm max foster, if you're just joining us, let me bring you up to date with the top stories at this hour. ukrainian forces say they've liberated several villages along the eastern front lines. but russia seems to be repelling forces saying they've destroyed equipment. and former president donald trump is expected to head to miami to huddle with lawyers in front of this court appearance on tuesday. trump is expected to plead not guilty. >> and as that court date nears, law enforcement sources tell cnn fbi special agents assigned to

domestic terrorism squads across the country are working to identify any possible threats. this as some trump supporters have been ramping up their charge and sometimes violent rhetoric. sources say that the fbi is aware that the group proud boys have discussed traveling to florida in support of trump. some right wing figures are calling for protests in miami on tuesday, while others fear it could be a trap set up to incriminate trump supporters which is what some believe happened with the january 6 riots. cnn as danny o'sullivan has more. >> reporter: we're seeing a lot of chatter online, right now, no specific violence, according to law enforcement. we have spoken to or monitor this kind of stuff. we're certainly not seeing anything like the leadup to january 6, 2021, where there's a mass mobilization effort on facebook and elsewhere to get

people to come to washington, d.c. as part of the stop the steal movement. look, because of january 6th and because of the prosecution stemming from that, a lot of this organizing has moved into private channels. that the armed enforcement officials tell us. that's harder to penetrate and harder to happen in the darker corners of the internet. >> trump says the criminal case against him is a joke and a political hit job. and in his first public remarks since the indictment, trump railed against the special counsel telling the crowd at this weekend's georgia republican convention that jack smith is deranged. trump's crowd outside the conviction seemed equally unshaken by the indictment. as cnn's eric ra gonzalez reports. >> reporter: former president donald trump unapologetic and on the attack. >> jack smith, sounds so innocent. he's deranged. this is a political hit job. >> reporter: georgia's gop convention, marking trump's

trump including the department of justice, the fbi and the press. supporters routinely brought up president joe biden, former vice president mike pence and former secretary of state hillary clinton all had sensitive materials in their possession while out of public office. one big difference, trump and his aide will nauta, had evidence. and reportedly not to cooperate with the grand jury subpoena. >> in the whole indictment, they don't mention the presidential records act. >> reporter: the indictment outlines trump allegedly showed classified documents to unauthorized people. in 2021, trump admitted on tape to having secret documents that he hadn't declassified according to the indictment. as president, i could have declassified. but now i can't, trump said, according to audio obtained by cnn. there's an audio recording of

him doing so? >> we know that can be changed. we know that can be altered. >> reporter: within the 49-page indictment, pictures showing documents stacked high in a mar-a-lago bathroom, ball room, office space and elsewhere. >> what he did is incredible. absolutely incredible. but the system allowed it to happen. the system is broken. it needs to be fixed. >> reporter: the convention also drew a handful of anti-trump protesters, co-opting one of his catchphrases. >> lock him up! >> lock you up. yeah, hillary clinton, she got a lot wrong. you're an idiot. >> reporter: they could not point to any piece of evidence but caused their support to waiver. >> i think trump is the best president we've ever had and i'm all about getting him re-elected. >> reporter: and special counsel jack smith encouraged people to

read that full indictment, 49 pages to get a grasp of the body of evidence. it was clear in my conversations with these trump supporters, they did not have any sort of interest in doing that. meanwhile, trump has denied any wrongdoing and an attorney for nauta has declined to comment, isabel rosales, cnn. the republican candidates aren't denying the reaction to the charges he's facing. here's what two of them told cnn. >> reading that indictment and looking at the selective omissions of both fact and law, then i'm even more convinced that a pardon is the right answer here. >> we shouldn't be promising and holding out the fig leaf of a pardon, because that undermines our jury system. we don't need a commander in chief that disregards the nation's secrets from our nuclear secrets to our military responses to particular worldwide events. >> despite their opinions, new

>> in this case, nicola sturgeon was arrested late yesterday morning, he was held in questioned seven hours and released pending investigation. as you guys mentioned this is coming from the ongoing investigation almost two years now into the finances of the party. specifically what happened, 660,000 pounds more than 870,000 u.s. dollars earmarked for the campaigning. so initial list, nicola sturgeon's spokesperson said she went to the interview voluntarily and will continue with the investigation. we heard from sturgeon who said to find nice in a situation today when i'm certain i'm committed no offense is a stalk. innocence is not just a presumption i'm entitled to in law i know beyond doubt that i'm innocent of any wrongdoing. and will sit as a member of the

doctors spoke to reporters on saturday and said that he was doing really as they expected him to do. that he was doing even better on some level because this is an 86-year-old man, obviously, who has been riddled with health issues for the last several years. the fact that he took a few steps that's really good news in terms of his recovery. we don't know how long he's in the hospital. we're expecting an update in two hours time, we're told a daily health bulletin will be given by the spokesperson. and then we will have a little idea. they said he will spend the rest of this week in hospital. beyond that he can go back home inside the vatican and be taken care of as well. one of the things notable, perhaps, we haven't seen a photo of him yet. we're still waiting for that. we assume that will come in the next few days. some sort of image of the holy father. he was very thankful.
