7:03 am
we saw blinken shaking hands with chinese president xi jinping with the tensions between the two global superpowers extremely high. xi has described the meeting as very good, and bnd blinken offe this -- >> very candid, in depth, and in places constructive and in other places we have a lot more work to do. >> cnn national correspondent kylie atwood is in china and we have our correspondent at the white house, and how would you describe these meetings, kiley? >> well, the secretary of state was clear that there was progress in some areas, but it is a relationship that is a work in progress here, and so, he said that the two sides did
7:04 am
agree that they need to stabilize the relationship, and that is in and of itself significant, but the officials set out to achieve here that they are not going to achieve that they do not have an agreement to reinstate communications between the two countries. the reason it is significant is because of close calls and incidents of the last two to three weeks of the chinese and the military involving incidents in the south china sea. those are recent example ps of why those channels of communications are so vital. the secretary of state said that he raised necessary tis of the channels over the course of the two-day meetings, but the chinese did not agree at the time to implement the channels of communication. now, when it comes to taiwan, we heard from the chinese readout they were clear in making demands regarding taiwan to the
7:05 am
secretary of state, and they made it clear that the united states cannot recognize taiwan's independence. they said that this is the area that presents most pronounced issue for the u.s./china relationship. this is what secretary of state antony blinken said to make the position of the u.s. stands, and the two sides are clearly very far apart on this topic. >> we do not support taiwan's independence, and we made it clear that we oppose any u unilateral changes in the existence on either side. and we are very concerned about the provocative actions that china has taken in recent years. >> we have heard from the secretary that china has told the u.s. officials that they are
7:06 am
not going to be providing lethal support to russia to be used in the war of ukraine, and that is something that china has said before, but they are watching u.s. to provide technology to ukraine that can be used in the battlefield. >> it is a very long and historic day there, and thank you for your work there, kylie atwood. and now, arlette seanez, how is the white house viewing these meetings there? >> well, within the biden administration, they were not expecting any major break throughs, but they were hoping to have some form of lines of communication strengthened between the two countries, and kiley spoke about that secretary blinken said that he did agree that there needed to be ways to strengthen the tensions that
7:07 am
needed to be decreased bed tween the two countries and especially thinking of the chinese spying balloon over the u.s. in the winter and the close calls in the air and sea. this is a call that over a month when president biden, himself, he said that there would soon be a thaw in the relations of the u.s. and china, and we will see once he gets debrief from blinken in the meetings whether they are heading towards thaw at that moment. one thing that is notable in the comments from secretary blinken earlier today is that they do plan to have these future officials continuing to speak between the u.s. and china, and people going there, and people coming to visit here in the u.s., and ultimately the goal would be culminating in a meeting between president biden, and president xi jinping. the president is hoping to meet with president xi in the coming months about those areas of
7:08 am
disagreement, and areas to cooperate on, and so we will see in the days to come that the president is traveling with the areas of questions, and how he can weigh in on the state of the relationship between the u.s. and china when he meets with xi. >> thank you very much. president biden is going to be traveling to california. and now, a judge has ruled that president trump cannot disclose information that was given to the attorneys in the research phase of his classified documents case. this is a request from special attorney jack smith. this is online, and less than a week after former president trump plead guilty -- plead not guilty to those charges. and so as to the allegations,
7:09 am
former attorney general barr said that he will put his own interests above everything else. >> would he put his own interests above the country? >> yes, he will always put his own ego above the country. he is like a defiant 9-year-old kid to push a glass toward his parents, and he is a very petty individual who will put his personal gratification of his ego ahead of the country's. >> political chief correspondent dana bash is joining us, but it is not just the indictment here, but former attorney general barr
7:10 am
calling trump petty. >> you are right, rahel, because what bill barr did yesterday was basically take down the former president and not on this one issue only with the classify documents in indictment, but on the core of who he is, and the core of his character or the way he described it lack thereof, and calling him a narcissist, and calling him so many things, and again, making clear that he is speaking from experience, somebody interacted with him at the highest levels during the trump administration, and remember, he was donald trump's attorney general. as i was listening to him, i was thinking, you know, the argument that he made against donald trump for president is stronger and more potent for any republican primary voter listening than any of donald trump's actual opponents for

nomination other than say chris christie, and it is just different, because chris christie didn't, and certainly he has known donald trump for over 20 years, but he did not serve with him, and serve in a loyal way with him as bill barr did. >> and as you point out, he had the experience of working very closely to him, and another person who had the experience of working closely to him is the former secretary mark esper. >> based on your experiences working with the trump administration, and do you believe that trump can be trusted with the country's secrets again? >> if the actions are true based on the indictment of the special counsel, no, it places the nation at risk. >> so based on the former
7:12 am
cabinet members saying these things, how does that impact trump? >> these comments coming from mark esper on "state of the union" with jake yesterday and former attorney general bill barr, we will see that his poll numbers will go up with every indictment that he has gotten, so when you have mark esper and bill barr, i should say both of them basically had falling outs with the former president, the then president over and around january 6th, and so both of them have been critical of him since then, but nothing like they have said very publicly in the clips that you just played and much, much more, because they are focused right now not just on january 6th which we should
7:13 am
mention that jack smith, the special counsel, still has the investigation going on this, but just about the notion of having the classified documents, and why he had the classified documents and the reason for that, and both for esper, and more specifically and more bluntly for bill barr, they are saying it is because he has a serious character flaw that they believe it should prohibit him from being president again. >> i want to turn to another former ally turned critic chris christie who also spoke to jake on the program yesterday. let's listen to that. >> if you believe to donald trump when he left, that means he did not pick the very best people, and he doesn't note thou pick personnel. if you believe to the great stuff, then this guy is the worst manager in the history of the american presidency. either way, republicans should listen to what he says. he is a petulant child when

someone disagrees with him. >> and dana, making the personal attacks there, but also the back and forth that trump is having with the former cabinet members, and you can't have it is both ways, and so this is reflecting badly on trump, and what do you make of that? >> you are so right, because it is interesting that the former president will lash out at bill barrs and mark esper, and bill bolton, and chris christie is saying that you picked them and you promised to pick the best people, and that is another character/manager of donald trump, and so it is just remaining to be seen if there is enough in the electorate of

they took over pie yats ki, and as you are continuing along the lines, it is going to take you to the city of melitopol and those are big cities, and those are three cities that are connecting a major transport route, the m-14 european highway. that is how russia is bringing the goods and resupplies to the front line troop on that so-called southern bridge they have. so what we are talking about is the potential for ukraine to continue their attack even though they have not reached the front line obstacle belt of what the russians are calling the zero line where they have the most obstacles and the most troops. it is going the indicate that ukraine's offensive and multiple directions are succeeding, and
7:31 am
even though it is going fully as a military guy, and four to five kilometers a day s a pretty good sized operation. >> general, if the ukrainians are making progress, it is slow progress, and hard won progress, because the russians are so dug in, particularly along this line right here. so, what does constitute success for them, particularly in this region? >> well, if you draw that line three more time, john. there are four more defensive belts monitored through satellites. the first two, the russians have limited number of troops defending them although they do have minefields and wires and some troops in the trenches, and the ukrainians have been successful against those lines, although it is moving slowly. the map that you are showing from the front line where the red begins to the bottom of the three cities that we talked about is close to about 70

miles, and so it is a tough offensive as you are going through the obstacle belts. what the russians are calling the zero line is the one furthest south and has the most obstacles and supposedly the best trained russian forces, but in different parts of the line, you will see different standards of quality in the russian forces. and so what the ukrainian forces are trying to do is to find the best place to continue the attack and in some cases having the special operations forces attacking behind the lines and in the rear along with the territorials. so it is slow movingsh and we have known it from the start, and a number of casualties on both sides, but it depends upon how stiff the russian defenders
