12:00 am
not even mention lockdowns. so why is that 16 trillion figure actually? well, it is the other is very rough estimate, this was in the 20, 20 for the cost to the u.s. of covid itself. more than half of that estimated 16 trillion cars, was from people dying prematurely of covid, suffering long term health, issues having mental health, issues nearest was estimated last to economic output over a decade. so you can argue that maybe some of this lost output would be because of restrictions and lockdowns, but certainly not all, of it and again, more than half is about the health impacts of the virus. i reached out to the papers, and this claim that we spend 16 trillion on lockdowns in particular, and one of them a harvard economics professor david color responded, quote, he's entirely incorrect, that was the cost of covid, not the cost of lockdowns. we were very clear about that in the analysis, and quote. apparently, not clear enough. >> yes, i mean,
12:01 am
to give folks the facts as they evaluate the candidates out there. thank you very much. thank you for joining us tonight. "cnn tonight" starts right now. >> great to see you. thank you very much. good evening, everyone. welcome to "cnn tonight." rescuers think they have about 30 hours left before the air supply runs out for five people onboard that missing submersible. the sub vanished somewhere in the north atlantic after heading out to see the site of the ship wrecked "titanic,." there's questions about what went wrong and if corners were cut with safety precautions. for a moment, i'll talk with experts in deep sea searches. also tonight, hunter biden's plea deal. the president's season is negotiating a deal with federal prosecutors to resolve his felony gun charge. would any of us be offered the
12:02 am
same deal. we have a reality check for you tonight. a a new cnn poll shows that president trump's support is slipping after being indicted for top secret documents. let's begin with the mission for the submersible with time running out. miguel marquez is in newfoundland with the latest on the search. >> reporter: want to show you what's happening on the ground in st. john's right now. this is the sister ship to the polar prince that took the submersible out there. the titan submersible out there. that's what it launched off of. and the polar prince is taking part in the search for the submersible. there's three c-17 jets that have landed here. they have tons of gear that will bring on to this ship.
12:03 am
a canadian coast guard ship is on its way to the search area. there are planes in the aero. planes not only look on the surface. but planes to drop buoys and listen for anything coming from that submersible. the ships are doing that, as well. at least the polar prince is. the easy part of the mission is to hear anything from the ship. the pressure is great that deep down. it is extremely cold. they are running out of oxygen. and they cannot find that ship yet, the submersible yet. getting it secured and hopefully bringing it home to safety. allison? >> miguel, thank you very much.
12:04 am
let's bring you the experts. tim taylor, an expert in deep water searches. christine dennison, who runs and plans operations like this one app and bill willard who pr traveled to the "titanic" site. thank you for being here. let's talk about the new equipment. they just brought in. what's the plan, to send a robot down and to look around? >> yes. a remote-operated vehicle is a tethered vehicle that's one down by a cable and operated on a ship. to drive around with cameras and sonar and other equipment to locate them. >> at the moment, they don't have one that can go to 13,000 feet? >> they have one, that goes to 3,000 meters and 3,800 meters. last i heard, they have a french ship, that can hit 6,000 meters.
12:05 am
they got the capability. these things are not readily available. but someone may be there before time runs out. >> we have information coming in right now. an internal u.s. memo finds that crews searching have heard banging sounds, every half an hour, during their search. so, the crews who have been searching for this misible. the banging was heard. unclear what the banging was or for how long it had been going. subsequent updates tuesday night suggested more sounds were heard. those were not described as banging. acoustic feedback was heard.
12:06 am
that's the latest update. obviously, that is hopeful, though vague. u plan expeditions like this, obviously. these are not for feint of heart people. and i assume that many millionaires or billionaires are on this one. like to do things like this. you say that you try to prepare for every contingency. what would you have done differently? >> my expertise in running for 20-some-odd years is working in the polar region. that's remote under water. it's not nearly as deep. but it comes to mitigating risk assessment and mitigating risk yourself. as company owner and expedition leader i have to concern myself with the potential litigation, liability and look out for my clients. at the end of the day, it's taking care of the clients.
12:07 am
it's people that entrust their life to you. it's a very big undertaking for them. i hope that everything was in place, that they needed. >> bill, as we mentioned, you are friends with paul henri. you call him p.h. >> p.h. >> what about this development, the breaking news, that the crews have heard banging sounds every 30 minutes and after these sonar devices were deployed. what does this tell you? >> if this is an accurate story, there is a tremendous amount of hope. the time interval of 30 minutes suggested that it's made. that's something that p.h. would do. is every -- >> bill? i think we lost you. >> -- to try to be located.
12:08 am
>> we lost you for a second. the interval of every 30 minutes. why does it tell you that it's something that p.h. would do? >> it's man made. when you're down there, it's going to be dark. it's going to be cold. you're going to send out some way to be noticed. >> we'll fix that. you're freezing a little bit. what do you think? >> i agree with him. i know p.h., not as well as his friend. i met him here on cnn, on flight 370. we were on set together. we kept in touch over the years. i would agree. they would be resourceful. they need to be heard. acoustic pinger, i question why it's not on this ship. they are making their own acoustic pinger if that's the case. they are banging on the hull and sending out signals. if they're doing it on a regular basis, what he would say is, it
12:09 am
is at irregular 30-minute intervals is man made. >> given this is picked up on acoustic feedback machines, is there anything else it could be? >> well, it could be the "titanic" and something in the current drifting and banging. but 30 minutes, every 30 minutes every time. it's a good sign of hope. bill, are you back with us yet? >> yes, ma'am. >> you have been down twice. >> i've been to the wreck site twice. but i've not dived down. i've been out there two different expeditions. >> you've been on top of the water? you haven't gone all the way down? >> that is correct.
12:10 am
>> okay. we had p.h., as you say, on, in 2014. he was talking to our bill weir. he was explaining what it looked like down there. i just want to play this for everybody. >> on the "titanic," you have to be part of the "titanic," there's a huge debris field, where you can find a lot of things. things from china, piece of the wreck. it's a same condition, it's totally dark. you have to use some light to see anything. >> as you can hear him saying there, it's totally dark. it's hard to see anything. you have to use special lights. how will they -- let's say they have -- let's say at some point in the next 30 hours, they can locate where the submersible is. how would they be able to actually spot it? how would they be able to find it? >> they are available to have lights that will be shining in
12:11 am
front of it, so it can illuminate an image or something in front of it. they would be able to connect that through the open porthole, through the opening. they would see that coming towards them. and that would give them hope also. of course, this rov approaching them, i would have it do two things. the first thing i have it do, is secure a tether of some sort on to the titan, so they can -- i would go a step further and see if t rov can go around and release the ballast. if it can release the ballast of the submersible, you will it working quickly. it will take two hours to get to the surface. but inside, they will no they're on their way. >> will this banging help them
12:12 am
narrow the search? >> yes. they can triangulate on noise. it's happening only every 30 minutes. they have a data update every 30 minutes. if it was happening every minute, it would be easier and faster. the camera and the lights are on the rov. they will be equipped with forward-looking sonar. they can look out 200, 300 yards, maybe more, and look with sonar and scan. they will be able to find a large object, like the submarine, and the wreck, of coursely. but with eyes using sound. they will have more tools than just a camera and lights to look around down there. >> i know earlier today, before they got the news, they had been hearing some banging. you were, i think it's fair to say, losing hope? >> i was. we have to remember we're still not there yet. if wcan locate them, what condition are they in? they have to be stressed. they're very cold.
12:13 am
they're in the dark. we still have to get them to the surface. they have been bolted in there. you have to release them. >> they don't have an escape hatch. >> they have none. you have to bring them to the surface and secure all of the vehicles and release them through this submersible. they've been through a tremendous amount. psychologically, physically, they're not at optimum capacity. i hold that hope. this is wonderful, wonderful breaking news. but wore not clear yet. there's so many things that can go wrong. that's important to note and important to take seriously and not lose sight of the fact we have a recovery mission. >> just to recap, crews searching for the submersible, heard banging sounds every 30 minutes today. and after they used additional sonar devices, the banging was
12:14 am
still heard. this was an update on the search. it's unclear when the banging was heard, or how long, based on the memo. it was suggested. there was more sounds heard tuesday night. that was not described as banging. acoustic feedback was heard. tim, what's your hope level at this hour? >> a little higher than it was when i started the show. there's a lot of work to be done if they are there. if they're in any type of shape. we don't know what happened in the first place. are they entangled in the wreck? finding them is the first thing. extricating them, bringing them to the top, as stated a second ago, is a whole other matter. you don't know what you are going to run into. there's a whole other set of problems that will have to be solved in short order. >> bill, quickly, what's your level of hope now?
12:15 am
there's several reue vehicles on-site or approaching the site. also strong hope, all of the "titanic" community that supports and loving him. >> we're going to keep you around and keep in touch with you, as we get more information. we'll stay on the story of the missing submersible. we'll bring you an update later in the show. other news. donald trump says he only hires the best people. but that's not what he calls them anymore. >> you called your white house chief of staff, john kelly, weak and ineffective. you called mick mulvaney, a born loser. your first secretary of state, rex tillerman, dumb as a rock. and james mattis, the most overrated general. you called your press secretary
12:16 am
milqu milquetoast. and you preferred to your transportation secretary, as his loving wife. why did you hire them in the first place? >> let's find out what he calls anthony scaramucci who is walking out right now. >> i feel left out. >> we'll see if you're left out. we'll talk about donald trump's new poll numbers next. thanks a lot. thank you. we all need fiber for our digestive health, but less than 10% of us get enough each day. good thing metamucil gummies are an easy way to get prebiotic, plant-based fiber. with the same amount of fiber as 2 cups of broccoli. metamucil gummies the easy way to get your daily fiber.

12:20 am
new cnn polling finds that donald trump's legal troubles are hurting his approval numbers. let's bring in our panel. we have jennifer rogers. former white house trump communications director, anthony scaramucci, and "rolling stone" columnist, jay michaelson. let's look at the polling numbers. donald trump's favorable numbers, among republicans and republican-leaning voters. in may, they were 77% approval.
12:21 am
now, 67% unfavorable. now, 27%. and then, in terms of given the federal charges -- ts is what was asked -- trump should end his campaign. 90% of democrats say yes. 62% of independents say yes. 27% of republicans. what do you make of all that? >> i think it's a small dent. i don't think it's a big enough dent yet. if those numbers start to move, he'll drop out of the race. he will not be able to handle an eviscerating defeat in iowa or new hampshire. >> he won't drop out before iowa or new hampshire? >> no. but if you told me he went to 55% unfavorable in the republican party, and you saw somebody like governor christie or governor desantis rise in the polls and you saw another indictment or two and you saw him starting to unravel.
12:22 am
i don't know what he's doing with his hair, but you have to get a new hair style or something. >> you see something in his hair? >> he's physically unraveling. >> what part is unraveling? >> i mean, he was probably using six cans of hairspray during the campaign and only using one now. >> this is the meter you're using. >> he's an image conscious guy. there's not enough hairspray going on on that raccoon nest. you can tell he's unraveling. people that know him, can tell this thing is starting to come undone on him. >> do you think this is a momentary dip in his poll numbers and they'll come back? >> first of all, i think this dip is probably happening because people are seeing not just the indictment itself, but how he is reacting to the indictment. he is literally incriminating himself on camera. his lawyers must be at home just slapping their foreheads, having
12:23 am
strokes because their client is making them crazy. this looks bad to his base. he famously said he can shooten in on fifth halve. but it's been seen that he can avoid prison without pissing off his base. >> he said that donald trump was incriminating himself in this brett bear interview. let's play the moment where he incriminated himself about the classified documents. >> whyot hand th over then? >> i had boxes. i wanted to go through the boxes and get my personal things out. i don't want to hand that over yet. i was busy, as you have seen. >> is that incriminating? >> recordings are gold for prosecutors. he's throwing out a new defense.
12:24 am
i was looking through the boxes and didn't have time to get through them. which is ridiculous on its face. and not a legal defense in any event. it's incriminating. it says to me he's more concerned about the campaign than the legal case. i think he's kind of putting all his eggs in, if i get elected president again, i can get rid of this basket, as opposed to fight it in the courts, where he is not going to have a good shot at it because of the strength of the case. >> this has to be an encouraging moment. if we look at the independence number, the favorable numbers up there. most republicans are reasonable people. i may have different views from someone on the conservative side of the aisle. this movement is a movement of spiritual darkness. he's a cult of personality, driven by rage, grievance and an moan
12:25 am
animous. most americans, we may disagree on a lot of issues. we're basically reasonable people. these things to me -- coleman is right. it's not just the death of 1,000 blows. the picture of the files in the bathroom, this is clearly well beyond where the vast middle of america is, even if trump's hard-core base stands by. >> he was too busy to go through the boxes and wanted to sort his golf shirts? >> it's incriminating. this is my opinion. his staff is departing him. the ones he is picking up now is yessing him. he's in a tough spot. he's going to rely on himself and go with his intuition, as opposed to great legal advice. and it will lead to his downfall. >> meaning what? >> he'll implode. he'll continue to do interviews
12:26 am
like that that incriminate him. there's recordings of things he is saying that are nonsensical. he will have a small group of people that no matter what, will say this is a witch hunt. that the government is going after him. and the government is bad actors. and the conspiracy people will stay with him. they will eventually flee. when it happens, why did it take so long? when it happens, it happens in a waterfall. it doesn't happen gradually. he'll be in that barrel going over niagara falls. and people will say, that was predictable. >> he's given us good visuals, i feel, in the metaphors he is using. >> of anybody at the table, he's the closest. >> going to get hairspray ads out of this. >> republicans say hunter biden got a sweetheart deal and a slap on the wrist. what would the punishment be for the rest of us?
12:27 am
a reality check next. more to come on the breaking news on the search for the sub. banging sounds have been heard every 30 minutes during the search today. we'll have more coming up. i need it cool at night. you trying to ice me out of the bed? baby, only on game nights. you know you are retired right? am i? ya! the queen sleep number 360 c2 smart bed is now only $899. plus, 48-month financing on all smart beds. shop now only at sleep number

12:31 am
president biden's son, hunter, will plead guilty to two tax misdemeanors. and is reportedly striking a deal with prosecutors for a felony gun charge. republicans call it a sweetheart deal. is that true? >> look, after an uncommonly
12:32 am
long investigation. hunter biden will plead guilty to two tax misdemeanor and guilty for a gun charge. this is not the outcome that republicans were hoping for. >> it shows the two-tier system in america. >> the d.o.j. hunts republicans and protects democrats. >> one set of rules for republicans and one set of rules for democrats. >> yeah. there's a lot of doubling down on this idea of a legal double standard, especially in the wake of donald trump's 37-count indictment. duds that stack up to the facts? the investigation was first by a trump appointee, david weiss of delaware, to reduce concern about politicized results. of course, hunter biden has been demonized by the right thoroughly. a lexisnexis search found he was
12:33 am
mentioned 2,200 times on fox news between 2020 and 2022. that's once a day. don't believe the hype. we know that other americans who have taken home national security documents, receive stiff prison sentences. willful failure to pay income tax with a guilty plea, often duds not result in prison time, especially if the money has been paid back with interest. that's the deal with hunter biden's case. he underpaid the irs, of $100,000, in 2017 and 2018, when was admittedly a crack cocaine addict. the gun charge is stranger. bear with me. hunter biden was charged with possessing a gun when he was a drug addict. that is illegal. and rarely charged stand alone unless the gun was used in a crime. over six months, federal prosecutors filed over 3,800
12:34 am
cases of unlandfall case of firearm. in only 3% of the time, failing to make a false statement to acquire the gun related to the lead charge. so, you can't reason someone out of something they weren't reasoned into. but here's the big picture. the fact that son of the president was investigated by the government, and charged, is actually evidence that no one is above the law in america. that's a good thing. and that's your reality check. >> john, thank you very much. we'll check in with you shortly. my panel is back quickly. just to be clear. if any of us underpaid our taxes by $100,000, for two years in a row, we would get probation? or we would get a stricter sentence? >> i'm not even sure you would be investigated and charged in the first place. there was a very good argument here, were hunter biden not the president's son, no one would
12:35 am
look at him for all the things he's done in the first place. putting that aside, you would have a good chance of getting probation, if you pay the money immediately, as hunter biden did. people were talking about this at the time of the investigation. hunter biden was a crack cocaine addict at the time of the conduct. you're thinking about taking this case to trial, felony trial. can you produce the mens rea, to a unanimous jury? that's a proof question, an issue for them. when thinking about this case and how to charge it, that's another thing about how to get a plea deal here. >> do you think that republicans will be worked up in a latter about hunter biden? >> hunter biden is made out to be tony soprano. you should have compassion. he lost his brother. he fell into addiction. he broke the law. i agree with john that no one is
12:36 am
above the law. this is a good thing. at the same time, the fact this man who has made a bunch of mistakes and has shown poor judgment, this is a person who is at the certain of the wild conspiracy theories, by one of the two major parties in the country. that's shameful. >> thank you very much. more on our breaking news in the search for the missing sub. banging sounds, heard every 0 minutes during the search today. we'll have more on breaking news. good thing metamucil gummies are an easy way to get prebiotic, plant-based fiber. with the same amount of fiber as 2 cups of broccoli. metamucil gummies the easy way to get your daily fiber. we planned well for retirement, but i wish we had more cash. you think those two have any idea? that they can sell their life insurance policy for cash? so they're basically sitting on a goldmine? i don't think they have a clue. that's crazy! well, not everyone knows coventry's helped thousands of people sell their policies for
12:37 am
cash. even term policies. i can't believe they're just sitting up there! sitting on all this cash. if you own a life insurance policy of $100,000 or more, you can sell all or part of it to coventry. even a term policy. for cash, or a combination of cash and coverage, with no future premiums. someone needs to tell them, that they're sitting on a goldmine, and you have no idea! hey, guys! you're sitting on a goldmine! come on, guys! do you hear that? i don't hear anything anymore. find out if you're sitting on a goldmine. call coventry direct today at the number on your screen, or visit coventrydirect.com.
12:38 am
12:39 am
12:40 am
we have breaking news on the massive search operation to find that submersible, for five people onboard, that went on sunday to view wreckage of the "titanic." there's a development in the past hour. crews searching for the sub reportedly heard banging sounds
12:41 am
at 30-minute intervals. after additional sonar devices were deployed, banging was still heard. this is according to an internal u.s. government memo. it's unheard what time this banging was heard. a subsequent update, sent tonight, suggested more sounds were heard, though they were not described as banging . >> this makes your hopes go skyrocketing. and you think, time is against us. it encourages you to do something but do it quickly because -- you have to be -- there's a little bit of caution here. if you remember, malaysian air. there were all sorts of bangings and beeps and pops heard that were positively this or that
12:42 am
that turned out to be none of those things. it gets the hopes of loved ones up. and it causes an upbeat in terms of let's get this show under way. i'm longi inglooking at it as a sign. how do we find out and how do we investigate right away. >> what about the every 30-minute sperinterval? what does that tell you? >> my closest friend and colleague is on that sub. he knows what he's doing. and maybe he figured that was the best way to have them recognize where they are, to make sounds every 30 minutes. he would have figured that out. that's the way p.h. was. instead of constant clanging. it's best to save energy and do it that way. >> you're not the only person that said that. there's another person that said he would be doing something
12:43 am
methodical in that way. >> positively. >> i imagine this helps narrow the search. do you have a sense of -- we heard earlier today, the search was the size of the state of connecticut. does this change that? >> i don't know where that came from. if they think that's the search area, that's incredibly large. i think it would be much smaller than that. much smaller than that. in my mind. maybe they thought it would drift further. the lesson we learned with air france and the other sunken ships, that the best place to look is the last known position. in this case, it was right above the "titanic" wreck site. and the question is, where are the bangs coming from? is it coming from that area? are they moving around the ocean? i get agitated, if they put something like that out, what do they do to investigate the
12:44 am
location of those bangs? not just they heard them but from where. that seems the thing that a navy submarine hunter should be able to do, to locate where it's coming from. i started hearing about it about two hours ago. a lot of the credible people that said this is the real deal. >> it's not just a witness. this is from a u.s. government memo. time is of the essence. estimates are, they have 30 hours left of an oxygen supply. and so, what needs to happen right now? do they have the equipment to do it? >> i don't know what's out there. i heard there's remotely operated vehicles. in the least, you need to get something with a camera. something with manipulator arms.
12:45 am
the first thing to do is to find where the banging are coming from. and move some remotely operated vehicles to that area and get them in the water. there may be nothing there. but if there is something there, you don't want to wait a day. let's get the ships out there right away. we'll find it and document what the issue is. and be able to retrieve what's there. >> sounds like that's what they're working on right now thank you, david. i know how nerve-racking this is for you that your friend is on there. >> thank you, allison. donald trump might not be joe biden's biggest headache in 2024. it could be a different candidate. could be a democrat. we're going to show you the proof.
12:46 am
meet the portable blender we can barely keep in stock. blendjet 2 gives you ice-crushing, big blender power on-the-go. so you can blend up a mouthwatering smoothie, protein shake, or latte wherever you are! recharge quickly with any usb port. best of all, it even cleans itself! just blend water with a drop of soap. what are you waiting for? order yours now from blendjet.com before they sell out again!

12:49 am
12:50 am
democratic presidential candidate robert f. kennedy jr. is speaking out about the war in ukraine and calling for the u.s. to stop, in his words, provocation of russia. >> i abhor russia's brutal and bloody invasion of that nation. we must understand that our government has also contributed to its circumstances, through repeated, deliberate, provocation of russia's going back to the 1990s. is robert kennedy jr. causing problems for biden. rfk jr. is 20%. someone else, 8%.
12:51 am
you think that democrats shouldn't laugh this off? >> no. i don't think democrats should. i think democrats, i worry, will make a similar mistake that was m made with trump, he seems like a clown, he's saying cr i ing cra. let's wish this goes away by not taking it seriously and we're all blind sided. >> what nimight happen if they don't take him seriously? >> he appeals to a lot of people. and we should make a serious effort to understand why. i watched the whole joe rogan episode. a lot of his ideas are unfounded. but he's speaking to a real resentment of people feel of the government's handling of covid. we know the pharmaceutical industry is the number one lobbyer. and the cdc, fda, nih, there's a
12:52 am
revolving door and regulatory that is legal, and people feel that policies were heavy-handed and rfk is speaking to that. democrats can do one of two things. they can focus on the looneyest claims. or come up with a counternarrative, like we care about that stuff, too, but we have a better way to solve it. >> one way to do it is talk about the fact that the biden administration has been pushing lower prescription drug costs against the drug companies. but polling has shown for a long time, that there is a -- his numbers are not as high as they should be for an incumbent president. i don't think bobby kennedy jr. is the solution to that. he's getting pumped up as a credible alternative to joe biden speaks to who he appeals
12:53 am
to. there were bernie sanders/donald trump fans in the world. he should not be dismissed. but his claims need to be interrogated in a fact-based way. many of his strongest claims break down on the slightest bit of scrutiny. but he sounds convincing because he's inundated himself with this stuff. >> 2008, a gentleman by the name of barack obama was not taken seriously. he was low in the polls. the clintons say, don't attack him. he'll be our hud secretary and he went on to be president. 2016, donald trump not taken seriously by anybody. candidates i work for, scott walker, jeb bush, he'll flame out of the race. we thought the mccain incident was going to cause that. he became the president. i don't think rfk becomes the president. but he can be heavy damage to the president. they have to go after him now. >> there's additional factor, too, the halo effect of his name. not just his last name, but
