♪ oxygen is running out, maybe less than 12 hours left. racing to locate the missing sub near the titanic hoping that the noises heard overnight provide some direction. >> and what is it like to be inside oceangate's titan submersible? when it loses communication with the surface? you will hear from someone who experienced that very thing. >> a potential catastrophic outcome was waiting to happen according to a former employee and an industry watchdog. were safety concerns ignored by the submersible company? those stories and more right here on "cnn news central." ♪ ♪ we are getting new information in just the last few minutes on the search for the

missing sub near the titanic. the u.s. coast guard is redirecting its search this morning after a canadian military plane picked up underwater noises. there are five people onboard running out of oxygen, running out of time. a new round of ships left newfoundland this morning to join the search efforts. now noises are not uncommon in the open ocean, but rescuers said they heard banging sounds in 30-minute intervals, regular spaces. an expert and friend told us that fact could be significant. >> the banging sounds are interesting because knowing nargeolet and his experience with submersibles and his background with submarines this is exactly how he would try to indicate that they were still alive and try to communicate with the surface. you would do some banging and do it on a regular schedule so it

was distinguishable from the background noises in the ocean all of the time. >> cnn's miguel marquez is in st. john's in newfoundland which is the closest land mass. what are you seeing this morning? >> well, we're seeing -- we saw a lot of activity here overnight and early this morning. coast guard ship, a third canadian coast guard ship now headed out that way. it takes, 10, 18 hours to get to the site where they're searching. the horizon arctic left earlier this morning and this is after three u.s. military planes, c-17s and very big cargo planes flew into st. john's airports and that gear was put on to the horiz horizon arctic and that is on its way right now. with regard to the banging, they heard it over a four-hour period every half hour or so and they put sonar buoys into the ocean. they heard other noises later on and it wasn't banging, but they're not clear what it was. they moved resources and they

moved ships that were on the surface to the area where they thought the banging was coming from. they put remote operated vehicles in the area hoping to find the submersible, but they did not. so now they're putting more resources on it and they have several coast guard ships that do side sonar that means they can map the bottom of the ocean looking for a visual signature of the submersible to see if they can find it in that area where the banging was coming from, but it is all hands on deck. if they are alive, they have very little time left and people here and everywhere are just hoping that this terrifying ordeal comes to a happy ending. john? >> they still have hope. that's for sure, but we are waiting for more updates at this point from the coast guard and other officials. miguel marquez, keep us posted. thank you very much. kate? >> holding out hope with the understanding of just how risky, how dangerous it is down there as everyone knows. >> there's only a handful of

people that have ever seen the titanic's wreckage in person and it is part of a growing trend known as extreme tourism where people pay huge sums of money to push the travel, and it is inherently dangerous. cnn has learned two -- cnn has learned that years ago two employees raised safety concerns about the now missing oceangate submarine. cnn's tom foreman has more on this and he's joining us now. tom, what are you learning? >> hi, kate. as the hours tick down, the questions are coming up more and more about how this reached this point. specifically, how this submersible was developed. you mentioned the employees there and an industry group and there was a letter from the new york times from them in which they said what was happening at oceangate and our apprehension that the experimental approach

and developing this craft could result in negative outcome from minor to catastrophic that would have serious consequences for everyone in the industry, and it went on to say your marketing material advertises that the titan design will meet or exceed the dmvgl safety standards and these are standards developed a long time ago for this type of vessel and yet it does not appear that oceangate has the intention of following your class rules and your representation is at minimum misleading to the public and leads a professional code of conduct we all endeavor to uphold. simply put, kate. years ago there were people in the company and outside the company saying your approach to developing this craft is too experimental, too outside the norms and is not being submitted to the standards that worldwide maritime organizations expect. bottom line is, a vehicle like this, engineers should say should be tested to two, three, four, five times the amount of

pressure you expect to encounter and the question is was this one tested to that level at any point? >> and you know the company will be facing these questions and continue now going forward. thank you very much. >> sara? >> joining us is titanic expert, scientist and under sea explorer and a physician. joe mcginnis. thank you very much. you were part of the first expedition to locate the wreckage of the titanic, but you had an experience down there that may in some ways rival this. did you actually get stuck without communications for a while and what was that like? >> well, on my second dive to the titanic. i made one in 1987 with the french government research sub and then with the russian research sub from russian academy of sciences in 1991 and on that dive we made 17 dives to the titanic. i co-led the expedition and did

the science and on the last dive, i climbed into the sub with the chief pilot and we went down to the titanic and landed on the floor of the pilot house and spent some time reflecting about what we've done and what we'd seen and having a moment of respect for the ocean and for the titanic accident, and as we were about to leave the pilot put on the thrusters, off we went and stopped about a meter above the floor and then he put it back down. so he found out very quickly that we were stuck, and so wisely, because he was an excellent pilot, they came in. the two pilots talked about what the situation was and he had put our -- the pilot had slid his left side skid underneath the

sub. when he landed the skid went under some telephone wire and so with the help of the second sub and conversations between the two we moved up and down and backwards and were able to kind of tiptoe out of that pretty tense situation, but again, it was great coordination, great pilots, great submarines. >> just thinking about being in that space for most of us humans feels anxiety-provoking, to say the least. can you give me a sense of what it is like when you're in that scenario. you are 12,000 feet under the pressure of the water. what does it feel like? what is the sense of being there and what might these explorers and these folks that went down there businessmen, as well, be feeling right now? >> well, i can't say. i can only imagine like the rest of us what they're feeling. it is a very confined space, the

subs that we use. so you get useded to that, but for these folks who are doing this for the first time it must be red line moments for them. the news is that p.h. is with them. nargeolet is one of the members of the team and you couldn't have a better person with you in a situation like this than p.h. who has made 35 dives to the titanic, who is calm under pressure. the best kind of leadership will be coming from p.h. he will be calm, quiet and doing all of the right things to conserve energy and to conserve oxygen and to conserve psychological, emotional energy, as well. >> because that expends more oxygen, as well if you start to hyperventilate or start to freak out. can you talk to me about how significant the sound that sonar has picked up.

there has been, every half an hour for about four hours a banging sound is how it has been described. is that something that you're trained to do to make sounds so that someone might find you or does that tell you that this is definitely human activity or something else? >> well, as your previous guest mentioned, it's an indication possibly of -- of human activity that is coordinated and again, this is the kind of thing that we would hope -- we're all engaged in this kind of collective imagination of what's going on down there and we are beset with fear and sadness and hope and -- and uncertainty, but these sounds have given us a sense of hope and let's hope that we can solve those problems before the oxygen runs out.

as rescue operations continue for the missing sub, we are hearing more about what it's like to be inside that vessel 12,000 feet below the surface. mike reese, he is one of the original writers on "the simpsons." he took one of these trips we're speaking about. speaking to a cnn affiliate, he describes the risk he taking when he stepped inside. >> we were all a part of this ongoing experiment. it's not a tour. it's not a fun trip. this is -- they're doing research and inventing the technology as they go. so before you even get on, you sign this long, long waiver that

mentions possible death three times on the first page. so you know what you're getting into and in fact, when i stepped on to the sub i just knew -- part of my mind was going, well, this could be the end. >> cnn's gabe cohen, he toured the same oceangate titan sub in 2018 and we know that the space inside is cramped when showing video when you were takinging a tour of the same sub, but it has been they days that these people have been down there. what does it look and feel like in there? >> yeah. so, kate, certainly, as you said there's not a lot of space. i don't like tight spaces and that's something that you really feel when you take your shoes off and stepped into that vessel. sitting in it, it was cramped, it's small and roughly the size of a minivan, which, of course, is why it can only fit five people. there's a small, makeshift bathroom set up onboard and this was designed for passengers to

sit inside for a short amount of time, eight, nine, ten hours and they've now been trapped down there, these passengers now for 72 hours. it was never designed to handle people for that length of time. we've also talked a lot about the off the shelf components onboard that you notice as you enter the titan. the gaming controller used to operate the vessel, but ocean gate has stressed that they have used some of those components to streamline the construction of the vessel, but that they cut no corners when it came to the pressure vessel, that actual vessel that people are sitting inside and the carbon fiber and titanium shell and they said it was safe and it was tested and as tom foreman went through earlier and we know that some former employees had raised concerns about the construction. >> thanks, gabe. appreciate it. >> john? >> fed chair jerome powell is testifying on capitol hill

talking about the health of the economy and whether we could see another hike in interest rates. with us now, cnn chief business correspondent christine romans. congress gets to talk to jerome powell, and i get you in this scenario. what is the answer? >> the fed inflation fight is not over and he's explaining why last week it paused in the rate hike campaign, but the pause will not last. the fed saying all fomc committee members think it will be appropriate to raise interest rates somewhat further by the end of the year. that's your money bite by the testimony and inflation pressures continue to run too high and it will be a long way to go to get inflation down to 2% and that's why markets are down this morning because the fed is promising more interest rate hikes ahead. there have been ten and then there was that pause and we have a meeting coming up in july where people think the fed will va to raise interest rates again. the job market is strong and the economy is growing at a moderate pace, but that the inflation

story has not finished yet and it's not an island and you can look around the world and when you do that, what are you seeing in terms of inflation? >> what you're seeing is the global inflation story and we learned this morning that the uk inflation is 8.7% and that is running hotter than many had thought it would be. the eurozone is down 6.1% and these were double digit numbers and in france it's 5.1% and compare that to the united states at 4%. you can see we've made progress on the inflation front and not enough progress for jerome powell and this is the global story and the big concern for central bankers is that those numbers will get sticky and they'll get harder and harder to get more meaningful improvement. so, john, if you're watching this at home and you're looking to buy money for a house, you could have higher costs to borrow and that's what it means.

republican presidential candidates on the campaign trail are sounding off about hunter biden's plea deal with the justice department, a plea deal that experts say is not out of the ordinary. if a judge approves the plea deal it would he would be on probation to pay his misdemeanor count for 2018 taxes on time. failed to pay by the deadlines. the plea deal would also allow biden to avoid a separate felony gun charge. after the deal was announced, as you might imagine, former president trump facing far more serious charges of his own posted on truth social accusing the justice department of giving biden a mere traffic ticket and saying the system is broken. across the board a similar

general merrick garland said this morning, the trump-appointed u.s. attorney assigned to the hunter biden case was given -- >> a lot of legal stuff going on right now, sara, and donald trump's support among republicans appears to have softened since his federal indictment, but he does still hold a clear lead in the primary field. there's a brand-new cnn poll that shows his overall numbers dropped from 53% to 47% in the horse race. you can see that ron desantis did not move at all. there's a lot underneath these numbers, as well. joining me now is cnn political reporter, margaret hoover, good to see you. let me put up the favorability numbers and his favorability is up by 66% to 67%, now what do

you see going on. >> i see light. light, perhaps, at the end of the tunnel. this proves my thesis which has been that there is an opportunity for someone other than trump to emerge and that while trump does have a lock on a certain percentage of the base, maybe that's 30%, maybe that's 35%, if the field isn't super crowded, you can see that perhaps there a plurality of republicans who are actually looking for someone else because they're not ultimately comfortable with somebody who -- i don't know, has stolen nuclear secrets and not turned them over to federal prosecutors when they've asked? >> that's speaking as a republican. >> he's hard core unphased and people saying he should not run for president. he should drop out among republicans. that's now a quarter of the republican field. >> let me put that number up

because i think this is very interesting. we asked should trump end his campaign because of the federal indictment. the overall number, 59% said yes -- no, this isn't it, but i'll read the number out loud. 90% of democrats say he should end his campaign. 67% of independents say he should end the campaign and 27% of republicans said he should end this campaign. >> this is des qualifying and you should drop out of the race and that's a quarter of republicans and a super majority of independents and as independents go so goes the general electorate. it shows that this indictment has really cost him in a fundamental way. >> you know what else it shows? >> i agree with you and what it does is it tells us all why political consultants have jobs because -- because if you're a political consultant for chris

christie right now, this proves the thesis that if you are blanketing in negative messaging for a week and that's for a regular candidate and forget the fact that if you're a former president who has been federally indicted for the first time in u.s. history you don't just have bad messaging, that's bad news and if you're a political consultant, you want to cut it out and run it in iowa, new hampshire and south carolina and every one of these close states that are always very tight, wisconsin, george a arizona. >> yes, but it's not about the messaging here, right? this has been a teflon don for a long time. this all of a sudden is having an impact on his core support, not just independents. the second thing is with desantis not moving and people saying they won't vote for any circumstances, rising, i think there's an opening for a third candidate. >> let me be clear, that was a misspeak. a third option for the

this afternoon we are going to hear from the coast guard for the first time since those noises were heard coming from the sea, and the weather will directly affect how rescue crews are able to navigate. joining us now is derek van dam. derek, what was the weather when the crew disappeared and what will we expect as they're continuing this search? >> yeah. when the crew disappeared on sunday, conditions were not favorable. there was low cloud, fog, mist and wind in the area as a cold front swept through the region.

this is the search area and newfoundland and the satellite loop and what's happening is the cold front has advanced eastward. so improving conditions about as ideal as one could get for a search and rescue operation of this magnitude and this complex considering that we're in the north atlantic where ocean swells can very easily get above 15 feet and right now they're running about three to six feet and water temperatures there and this is the sea surface temperatures running about 55 to 57 degrees according to analysis that we did here in the cnn weather center. we did a deep dive about what conditions would be like at the surface and what they would be like at the bottom. the search and rescue operations ongoing at the surface are not impacted too much by the weather because let's talk about the sonar ship and the many ships searching for the submersive vessel under water and it's 660 feet and not much of a difference in the ocean temperature and some of the currents mixing in with the wind

a surge of violence in the west bank overnight. this morning hundreds of israeli settlers attacked a palestinian village there. at least one palestinian man was killed and a dozen more injured. this follows similar violence by settlers overnight across the

region. multiple cars in flames there. the violence follows the deadliest attack on israelis since january. that is according to cnn's count. four people were killed and four more injured in an attack on a gas station and the suspected gunmen were later killed by israeli forces. cnn reports from the west bank. >> the attacks started here at this hamas restaurant that's part of a gas station complex just outside of the borders in the settlement in the occupied west bank. the attackers came to this restaurant shooting through to the restaurant killing the first of the three victims including two teenagers. the fourth victim was killed at the gas station that's just in front of us. israeli officials saying another four people were injured and saying it was the work of two hamas operatives who came here in a car, the first of the gunman was shot and killed by an armed civilian who happened to be on site and the second gunman managed to get away and still a car and that triggered an
