world. i am michael holmes and we do begin with breaking news, enormous lyrical of people in russia were an intelligence official is accusing the mercenary leader, yevgeny prigozhin, of trying to stage a coup. i want to show you new videos of soldiers on the streets in russia's rostov region which yevgeny prigozhin claims his troops are entering from ukraine and are ready to destroy everything in their way. is unclear who is in command of the troops you see there on their screen. the local governor is urging people to stay at home while yevgeny prigozhin claims russian shoes are joining and greeting his mercenaries. security also stepped up in moscow with the mayor said that anti-terrorism measurers are being carried out in the city after russia opened a legal case against yevgeny prigozhin accusing him of calling for armed rebellion. on friday he claimed that russian military struck a wagner camp and pledged retribution.
10:02 pm
russia's defense ministry denies his accusations. he later claimed that a military helicopter also hit troops in russia but that it was shot down by his men. security service is urging wagner to contain yevgeny prigozhin. warning this report contains disturbing images. >> reporter: these are the chaotic scenes posted by the wagner mercenary group and what they say is their forest camp struck the russian military. in the clearing trees have been smashed and some with fabrics from their branches. through a gash in the soil a fire burns what appears to be a destroyed bunker. there are groups and images, the corpse in the undergrowth as well as seven body parts. the russian defense ministry denies any role in this. but a furious wagner leader is vowing revenge.
10:03 pm
>> i asked no one to put up any resistance. >> justice for the troops will be restored and then justice for all of russia. it's a threat of violence not posing a major challenge. neither russian security service has opened a criminal case to what they say is a call for armed rebellion. patients with yevgeny prigozhin seems to have run out. the wagner chief whose mercenaries have played a key role in the ukraine role has long been at odds with russia's military command. accusing them repeatedly of mishandling the conflict. recent weeks have seen tensions escalate after the kremlin ordered all russian mercenaries to sign contracts with the

defense ministry in a move seen as a crack down on wagner. in the hours before the alleged strike on the wagner camp prigozhin stepped up his war of words accusing the defense ministry of tricking the country into an unprovoked invasion. back in february last year. on february 24th nothing extraordinary happened. the ministry of defense was trying to deceive the public and to deceive the president and say that there was insane aggression on the part of ukraine and that they were going to attack us together with nato. the war was not needed in order to return russian citizens to our bosom and not needed in order to do militarize and enough to fight -- and de- nazify -- is a dangerous criticism that may be plunging the country into turmoil. >> ivan watson has been monitoring the dramatic

developments in russia and he joins me from hong kong with more. ivan, bring us up to date on the latest that we know. what is going on in rostov and how significant is that city? >> right, well this is a southern russians did he not far from ukraine. we have seen images on social media of troops deploying in the center of the city not far from the headquarters of the russian military and its command in the south of the country. apparently don hours. now i am watching videos that have emerged in the last hour that show prigozhin, the leader of the wagner mercenary group announcing that he is in rostov. i can independently confirm this , but in one of these videos he is saying it 7:30 in the morning which is about 20 minutes ago in rostov.
10:06 pm
he claims to be at the headquarters of the russian military in the south of the country that he has taken it over. he is not impeding military operations. he also claims to have taken over the airbase in rostov. he said the planes are still flying but he wants them to attack ukrainians, not his forces. you see in the video we are showing that is a long conversation apparently with some officers there where he accuses them of carrying out attacks against russian civilians, one of the officers responds and says that is the first time i am hearing of this. in another video he goes on to say that we are going to bring you real information that the casualty figures in ukraine are 3 to 4 times higher than what is officially being announced and that there has been an enormous loss of territory. he also claims that the chief of general staff fled the location he is at when his forces
10:07 pm
approached there. at one point he goes on to stay that he cannot identify them and he goes on to say that we are going day here and blockade rostov until the chief of general staff and the defense minister come here. that's the way it's going to be. they said something about getting these guys and taking them away from here and he says no way, my guys will not leave here so it does appear that he has taken over some kind of -- he's claiming the headquarters of the russian military in the south of the country and is sitting there with officers and saying he's not going anywhere and he even goes one step further to say we will go on to moscow. this is a remarkable power struggle taking place in the south of russia between the most powerful mercenary boss in russia who just weeks ago was
10:08 pm
leading a battle against ukrainian forces and it now apparently occupying a russian military headquarters. >> it's extraordinary russian on russian. it's interesting that prigozhin said many things but he said one of the most outrageous was that the reasons for the war were just not true. what is the potential impact of that on russian public opinion? how that might play out on the street? >> this is playing out on streets, on phones and on television. russian state television is leading with the news with the kremlin's narrative that a criminal case has been launched against him for armed rebellion so they are not hiding that. we hear the governor of rostov saying that precautions have to be taken for safety also hearing that the governor of the region to the north of that
10:09 pm
saying that there appears to be an armed condc -- convoy heading towards that region and we know that there have been additional antiterrorism security measures announced in moscow itself while this mercenary chief is threatening to move on moscow itself. it's about a 15 hour drive on a good day. prigozhin is very public and he is vowing that he and his men are ready to die for what they claim is a patriotic cause he has openly repeatedly accused military top command of genocide for sending forces into ukraine.
10:10 pm
our number of armed forces that have been on the frontlines in the trenches in ukraine for months now and they have seen their comrades in arms killed in battle in large numbers and are now apparently prepared to end those same weapons on the russian military and security forces. the question of what length the wagner forces are ready to go to and what length the russian security forces are ready to go to to put this down. i can remember back in the 90s

10:13 pm
crossed in the last 24 hours where he accused the russian military of opening fire with airstrikes against his own forces and that is something that the russian defense ministry has denied. now finally the russian government is calling for his arrest. the fsb, the successor for the kgb is also calling on wagner mercenaries to stop following the orders of prigozhin himself but if you look at the posture of the forces around him in these videos, they are acting as bodyguards and they are clearly very loyal to this man who once was described as the top caterer to the kremlin. >> all right, appreciate that up date, ivan. ivan watson, in hong kong for us. u.s. president joe biden is being briefed of course on the growing tensions between the head of wagner and russia's military leadership.
