cracks in vladimir putin's 23 year rule. the streets are quiet but anxiety gripped the city saturday after wagner group mercenaries marched toward moscow a deal brought to an end and whereabouts of head yevgeny prigozhin remains a mystery. his news service told cnn he will answer questions whether he has quote proper communication. one thing is clear the insurrection marks the most serious threat we have seen to putin's rule. >> this is just an added chapter to a very, very bad book that putin has written for russia but what is so striking about it is it's internal, the fact that you have from within, some one directly questioning putin's authority, directly questioning the premises upon which he launched this aggression against ukraine. that in and of itself is

putin spokesman not the president himself, interesting also that state media add a pre-insurrection interview with president putin where she said his starts and ends with the special ministry operation trying to show he's still in control of the situation, no public statement from the military top brass head of the armed forces and operation in ukraine and defense minister the so-called evil leadership, the march for justice as he calls it designed to stop. however this morning, the russian ministry defense has put out video saying that the defenseman did visit the zone of the special military operation the western group of troops there. they did not however say when and we cannot verify this video but he's essentially trying to

to disarm you couldn't think of a better gift for nato and the ukranians. i think it's significant that yevgeny prigozhin is apparently being sent to belarus where russia staged part of its initial invasion of ukraine and continues to do military exercised putting nukes in belarus, they could have sent them further away from the zone of the special military operation but it think there are questions for yevgeny prigozhin having led his fighters on this march toward moscow only to abort the mission, there may be questions of his leadership of this group going forward. >> thanks to claire sebastian live from london. u.s. president joe biden has spoken with ukranian president volodymyr zelenskyy about the developments in russia saying mr. biden reaffirmed unwavering support for ukraine and spoke about ukraine's counteroffensive as well as continued aid from

way and know how to respond. >> cnn's ben has the front line battles in ukraine. >> after the brief but intense drama in russia, it's back to the war in ukraine. while wagner chief yevgeny prigozhin was on the rampage against his foes in moscow officials in kiev were largely silent following napoleon's advice never interrupt your enemy while he's making mistake. many ukranians entertain the hope that civil war in russia would lead to early end of the war but yevgeny prigozhin's sudden about face dashed those hopes. sunday ukranian presidential adviser said in an interview he was hoping for something more concrete, perhaps a civil war in russia. he said, he was still confident that will eventually happen.
11:12 pm
while attention was diverted away from the front the fighting went on. sunday ukranian officials claimed their forces had seized a kilometer stretch of trenches near bakhmut saying they killed wounded or captured a battalion. the much anticipated counteroffensive has yet to hit its stride. i'm ben wedeman cnn. >> we want to go now to maria the head of regional security and conflict studies for the democratic initiatives foundation in kiev and is research fellow at the london school of economics. appreciate you joining us. >> good morning from london. >> so, after an extraordinary 36 hours yevgeny prigozhin's armed
11:13 pm
rebellion came to sudden end but not before significant damage had been done to the leadership of president vladimir putin. what is being said in ukraine about russia's brief insurrection and how might this affect the way this war plays out? i mean you would have been talking to your contacts obviously in ukraine. >> actually in ukraine, the main direction was focussed on the political damage and the image of us so to say strong regime of mr. putin as it was perceived in many countries including in the west and example this rebellion shows the institutional system under mr. putin was taingt in this first day of the mutiny attempt that the system which putin actually tried to build up when all the branches of security law enforcement bodies
11:14 pm
intelligence are all divided and dependent end. he tried to prevent any possibility for mutiny against him and actually in the time of the crisis which definitely wasn't yevgeny prigozhin started this mutiny none of this institution of this divided separation was capable of reacting in a flexible and strong way immediately and actually moscow seemed to be not protected actually and yevgeny prigozhin stopped because he couldn't actually. he could drive to moscow but logistically he wouldn't be able to conduct any let's say military battle around or in moscow so it's a different story but let's say from ukranian point of view the main damage which was done is it becomes obvious not only for those who support ukraine but also for those who try somehow to back putin, the system is not that strong as putin always claims
11:15 pm
and the country is not, let's say, institutionly fully controlled by this person. >> so, yevgeny prigozhin's 25,000 wagner fighters came within 125 miles of moscow, putting intense pressure on putin, who initially accused yevgeny prigozhin of being a traitor and offered a deal to drop charges against him in exchange for stopping this insurrection and moving to belarus in exile. so it's unclear where he is right now, but can yevgeny prigozhin even survive this, given he also criticized putin's failed war in ukraine? he says, russia shouldn't be there. so what will likely happen to yevgeny prigozhin do you think? >> first of all, it's not necessarily true that yevgeny prigozhin will completely stick to the agreement to the
11:16 pm
political deal which was achieved actually because wagner is not just yevgeny prigozhin. these are several dozens of highly motivated and organized people, who are armed at least as of now, and the fact that the defense minister of russia is going to incorporate most of these people into their regular russian army doesn't mean this plan will be fulfilled so yes, secondly putin contrived to eliminate yevgeny prigozhin physically because this is normally normal tactics for russia. they've been doing that to people who made much less damage to the regime and they did that under challenges of nato members within last 5-6 years so yevgeny prigozhin is not necessarily will have some kind of political security in the territory of belarus but basically the
11:17 pm
question which is still anand maybe won't be answered in the near future is actually whether someone from around putin's elite supported covertly the yevgeny prigozhin rebellion because actually the yevgeny prigozhin group was always saying he had not enough arms, not enough weapons. he started such a huge operation most probably having at least latent support or promised future support from some one who still has leverage and is within the system around mr. putin on a much higher level than yevgeny prigozhin because he's not part of the democratic system and in russia in a totalitarian state only people who have posts who have positions and institutional systems have much influence as
11:18 pm
anybody else. if some of the people were backing yevgeny prigozhin it means the story really is not added yet. >> of course we have no evidence to suggest that at this juncture but ukraine says yevgeny prigozhin's wagner uprising in russia is the first stage of dismantling putin's regime. do you agree with that assessment? >> i agree, because basically if we remember that all the way since russia invaded ukraine we have been hearing from many foreign countries like ukraine and others trying to keep neutrality that russia cannot about defeated because the power of putin is so strong we have to stick to their interests. as of now there are two signals one to the countries and foreign audiencechy explained already that regime is not that kind it can be defeated. it can be and should be defeated and there will be no actually
11:19 pm
survival of the state and everyone is fearing but on the other hand, there is a clear signal to political elite around putin. before this rebellion there was a general impression that even if the elite are not satisfied with how the war in ukraine is going on, but the price to oppose put than might be much higher for them personally and their people than just to stick to their official position. as of now they see many cracks in the system, lack of influence on the side of putin personally because basically, if part of the elite support yevgeny prigozhin or did the same to a more effective way, then the putin regime would collapse. it was very clear after this 24 heirs when yevgeny prigozhin was moving and system was not able to do anything, and the main mistake or the main problem of
11:20 pm
yevgeny prigozhin is he realized a military rebellion in moscow and of course to try to do that you have to be much more capable in terms of logistics than have 10,000 of armed people move to moscow. >> maria zulkina thanks for joining us and we appreciate your analysis.
