this morning, an israeli source says that the country has lost the largest military operation in the west bank since 2002, the second sinintafata.

hadas gold is outside of jerusalem with the latest. what are you learning? >> john, this is being described as the largest israeli military operation in the west bank since 2002 in the days of the second i intifata and there were tanks, but they were outside of the city of jenin, and in terms of the air strike, this started 1:00 a.m. overnight, and they used drones for the air strikes to target locations within the jenin refugee camp, and it is hard to describe how dense and populated this area is. the israeli military saying they were focused on the terrorist infrastructure and command and control structures and command and control sites and the like.

they have carried out ten separate strike, and there are ongoing gun battles, and the israeli military is still engaging in fighting, and what they say militants in the mosques and the like. but i was in jenin yesterday with our team for a different story with the drones buzzing above our heads, but today, the residents are saying that the sheer amount. and jenin has witnessed several of the military raids in the last year and half, and this is in response to an increasing attack of these drones against israel. but many of the residents there are saying that the israeli bulldozers are tearing up their streets. this is ostensibly to remove the ieds that they have been using

against the israeli military there. we know at least eight palestinians have been killed, and we know that no militant group has been claiming them as the members, and we know of at least 50 injure. we know that there has been one israeli soldier injured. the white house is monitoring this, but they are supporting the israeli people. but there is condemnation from egypt and jordan for the scale of this operation, and the concern now, john, it is going to turn into something so much broader. we are talking about the days of the second intafata and they are saying these are targeted targets, but they are calling on all of the members now to operate against israel.

april, and the u.s. embassy has been requesting meetings with him, but they have been turned down. so it is good news that she has been able to get in to meet with him, and we have not been getting the readouts yet, and we may get more as time goes on, because we understand that the meeting concluded today, but we should note, he was detained in march on charges of espionage, and the state department is denying it, and the family is denying it, because he was there as a journalist for "the wall street journal." and one of the challenges of being charged with espionage in the russian system is that the russians are looking for something they can get out of the united states from their spying around the world. what we are learning is that the u.s. is trying to learn what it will take to get evan out of prison.

some 45,000 security forces were deployed across the country. france is being gripped by violent demonstrations following police shooting, and french president emmanuel macron calls it inexcusable, but he says that many are exploiting boy's death. so where do things stand in these protests, right now, melissa? >> reporter: well, this is a part of paris that saw violence saturday night, and the house of the local mayor was rammed by a car on fire, and attempted murder investigation ongoing with his wife and children inside. we saw the town hall with a message on it. and we are seeing solidaire and support for the mayor as a line has been crossed. it has been a week now, and a

remarkable levels of anger and it is gripping part of the outer parts of paris, and not only the well off periods of france, but many of of the other parts, of the years of frustration of the fears, and the systemic and what we have seen over the course of the weekend was another weekend of remarkable violence. they were down to 157 sunday night with the violence, but they are hoping that the violence may be quieting down, and what has helped is that young nial, the young boy killed by the police, and his grandmother had to say. >> translator: i blame the policeman who killed my grandson. i'm the grandmother, and i blame the police who killed my

midwest, and the high and keep in mind now we will go over it again. 250 re. ant and many of them are going to ramp up today through the evening. from massachusetts into mississippi and arkansas and oklahoma. the secondary target point is up across sections of the midwest with large hill. so once it starts to get the heating of the day, and into the holiday, we will have thunderstorms possible, and the target is here across the midwest including minneapolis stretching into denver and yet again many of the same areas,

nows of unionized hotel workers in los angeles walked off the job sunday, going on strike just as tourists packed into southern california for the july 4th holiday weekend. the walkout came af their labor contract expired. they're demanding better pay and better benefits. most of them cannot afford to live anywhere near where they work. the strike left hotels short

staffed during this holiday season. cnn's camilla bernal is in los angeles this morning. i see the strike is still happening. what can you tell us? >> reporter: hey, marianne. this is the scene outside a number of hotels in los angeles. if you're staying at the j.w. marriott, for example, it's what you're waking up to. it's not necessarily pleasant for the guests here. these are the people behind the scenes. these are the people that cook and clean. even though the hotels are going to stay open, it is significant because, of course, you're seeing them outside instead of working in the hotel. they have a number of demands, including, of course, higher wages and better pension. but they're also asking for better conditions when they're working, safer work loads and essentially just better health care. one of the things that they're really interested in is the housing fund as well. what they're saying is -- and it's almost impossible to live

here in los angeles and work in these hotels. and they say it's almost just really difficult to be in los angeles with the salaries that they have at the moment. here is what one of those union members told me just a few minutes ago. >> last year i took a leap of faith, and i ended up moving to apple valley because my rent was increasing to $3,000 for a two-bedroom apartment. the wage and what we get paid now is not the same as, you know, the rent prices. the rent has gone up and our wages hasn't. so, we're, you know, basically scraping the end of the barrel. >> reporter: and she's not the only one that was expressing those sentiments. i talked to someone else who told me, i have to work two jobs in order to live here in los angeles. so, they say they're going to be out there for as long as it takes. and it's not just here at the marriott, but it's in a number of hotels.

we did reach out to marriott, though, and what they're saying is that they're going to remain open and that they're trying to negotiate here. the union is saying that they know what their demands are. they simply want these hotels to sign. meanwhile, though, we know people familiar with those negotiations and with plans say that they're going to remain open and they're going to continue to do whatever they can. but asking for a $5 increase. they're offering $2.50. so, we'll have to see where those numbers come. in the meantime, these workers will be out here picketing. sarah? >> thank you so much. i know it's hard to hear us. one of the big things across the country is a lot of people who work in cities that are really, really expensive to live in, having a hard time with that. >> hard to make ends meet. thank you all for joining us. this has been "cnn news central."
