new estimate. 180,000 russian forces making a push on to eastern france in ukraine. that's according to ukrainian military spokesman. for context, that is more than twice the size of the british army. president zelenskyy has been openly addressing the difficulties they have been facing on the front lines. he does still maintain progress is being made. he's also making news in a new exclusive interview with erin burnett who sat down with him in odessa as he told her that he does believe president putin's power is diminishing. >> have you seen any changes and how you think he's acting, in his behaviors, since the attempted coup? [speaking non-english] >> translator: yes, we see the reaction after certain bogner steps. we see putin's reaction. it is week. firstly, we see he doesn't control everything. wagner is moving deep into russia and taking certain regions shows how easy it is to

do. putin doesn't control the situation in the regions. he doesn't control the security situation. all of us understand that his whole army is in ukraine. almost entire army is there. so, all of that vertical power he used to have just got crumbling down. >> that is the latest from zelenskyy. now, let's get the very latest on ukraine's counteroffensive and how it is going. cnn's ben vitamin reports from eastern ukraine. >> caitlin, even president volodymyr zelenskyy is acknowledging that the going is getting tough in the ukrainian counteroffensive. he said last week was difficult on the front line. we are making progress. we are moving forward. step-by-step. step-by-step, things are going slow. in fact, the commander of ground forces in the ukrainian army visited the front lines around bakhmut and said one of the reasons for the slow
10:05 pm
progress is what he called, deep russian defenses. we also heard this evening that the spokesman for ukrainian forces in the east are saying that the russians had deployed along the eastern front. 180,000 troops, 50,000 alone in and around bakhmut. when president zelenskyy tells our erin burnett that putin is weak, perhaps politically in russia. but on the front lines, that weakness is not being felt. behind the front lines, today, the russians fired iranian-made shohei drones on the northeastern city of sumy. they, are they killed at least two people, injured 19, including a five-year-old child. caitlin? >> ben vitamin, thank you for that. for more insight on that, what is happening on the battlefield, retired u.s. army major marc lions joins me now. you heard ben saying there,
10:06 pm
summoning it up, we've been talking about the weakness and staying home after that revolt that we saw by the wagner group. they are not necessarily seeing it on the frontlines. what does that say to you? >> they have mass. they have a machine on that front line, when the very start, from an expectation perspective, it was going to be very difficult to think that ukraine was going to do everything and vanquish it. the counteroffensive is going about as well as it can go given that they have no air superiority on the ukrainian side. i think it's a wait and see mode. it's like you can't even call it a counteroffensive. we continue to try -- because it is that slow? >> we try to put american military doctrine on top of this. we've handed them this kind of equipment, this is world war i. this is trench warfare that is going on there. we have to recognize that if ukraine can hold on and do what it has been doing that they come and it's getting and we get some more from the west, it will it least have a chance to get russia to negotiation table. that's really about it.
10:07 pm
i heard, he's not giving up crimea. i have a hard time thinking he has the military assets to take back crimea. he's threatening, i don't think you can take. it >> let's talk about. that that stood out to me as well. the moment that i heard him say that. obviously, crimea was illegally annexed by russia in 2014. this is what he said about the end result of what this entire war could look like and crimea specifically. [speaking non-english] >> translator: we can't imagine ukraine without crimea. without crimea, it's under the russian occupation. it means only one thing, war is not over yet. >> to be clear, in victory, in peace, is there any scenario where crimea is not part of ukraine? >> it will not be victory then. >> do you as officials see bay as realistic? >> difficult. if there are reports of 180,000 russian troops within that region now, he only 300,000 in

counteroffensive, you have to mask troops along an access, it's usually thin. battle of the bulge. attack along the way. you're going to have success. we can pretend that ukraine will be able to mobilize troops and get there that fast. i don't think they're gonna be able to do it with any element of surprise, which is always, usually, a factor, a factor of a successful counteroffensive. >> we're seeing how grueling this counteroffensive is. what stood out to me, what he also said about mike pence, former vice president who recently showed up in ukraine, which was notable in and of itself because of the split we have seen in the republican field. slinky talked about the importance of bipartisanship. courtney said, there are dangerous signals from the republican party about that support waning. how much time does he have? >> well, let's hope both parties recognize that it's in the united states interest to keep supporting ukraine, at this point, giving the more equipment, given them what they need. i'd like to see, after this

nato meeting, nato countries getting together up there, pc on, cluster munitions, their attacks, more mine clearing operations, a bit more drones. i'd like to see them do those kinds of things. let's hope that politically we don't make this an issue in this election because it is important from our european allies. look at how close nato is no. nato countries are great, haven't done that in a long time, about how to support this operation. for ukraine to eventually become part of nato, that border is going to have to be secure. it can't be under any dress under any level. >> you mentioned nato meeting next week. president biden is going. zelenskyy is saying they need to be invited to it now. is any chance that happening? >> i don't think so. i think part of this counteroffensive is to show nato that they are willing to do whatever it takes, again, we have to wait and see. continuing to provide military equipment. again, it's not in our best interest or nato's best

>> is there room for a third party candidate in 2024? after, all polls have consistently shown most americans do not want a donald trump versus joe biden rematch. now, a nonprofit political group known as no label says it is determined to give voters potentially another option, especially if the country is in store for that 2020 rematch. the democrats and anti trumpers say that a third party could just end up playing spoiler in all of this by siphoning votes from president biden in swing states and, therefore, handing the election to donald trump. joining us now is a longtime associate of no labels, former michigan republican congressman, fred upton. i know you told me not to call you congressman. let's talk about this group, no labels. as the wall street journal is, riding its latest report says, it's called no labels, many political strategist have their own label, spoiler.
10:20 pm
it's no labels going to be ending up as a spoiler? >> no, i don't think so. no labels has been around since 2008 or 2009. it was very involved with -- a house caucus, which i was a vice chair of. the comember of republicans and democrats. you -- had and fitzpatrick. on a number of times, 55 to 60 members. this is a little larger group, bipartisan, bicameral. until now they've been very focused on the issue and they still are. it says the debt ceiling, immigration. they're keeping the government open, a whole bunch of chips fell, infrastructure. now, the polling that we've done shows literally 20,000 people around the country, it draws equally, unlike the basic tenant in 92, 30 years ago, was pro basically took from bush and allow bill clinton to win the election.
10:21 pm
the polling now shows that we draw pretty much equally between both sides, the republicans and the democrats. our focus right now is, pro was successful, not getting in the ballot in all 50 states. it's not gonna be a down-ticket appeal. it's just going to be a president and vice president. we're not going to have congressional candidates or senators state rep candidates on their. literally, to get on the ballot, we had some good news this last week. utah approved us of getting on the ballot. so, our intent is to be an all 50 states by the end of the first quarter of next year. at a nationalist convention up in dallas. >> i want to talk more about that effort to get on the ballot. obviously, you, know if you want to win, and yet the and on the ballot first. i'm interested in that. when you say you are pulling from democrats and republicans equally, you know, we've seen the polling on how voters don't want to trump biden rematch. there's very little data about what this exactly would look
10:22 pm

nominee running together, very much along the lines of what john mccain almost it with joe lieberman back in a wait. >> what is that path to victory? i've seen the electoral path to victory map that your group has. it says it requires winds in hawaii, vermont, maryland, massachusetts. those are all states and in 2020, biden won by 30 points or more. it doesn't really seem like a viable path. >> you remember larry hogan who is one of the co-chairs of no labels actually carried the state and 20 by, what, 30 points? a republican in a state that trump got crushed. there is definitely room for people to say, we don't want this rematch and the polls show that. can he come up with a different take it? we actually think that there is a pathway for us to get 270, more than 270 electoral votes.
10:26 pm
our first goal is to get on the ballot. now, we have to get the signatures to get on the ballot. that's what we're up to now, which is why utah was a big state this last week. we're in play and a good number of states across the country at the moment. >> biden still did win maryland that year by more than 30 points. you mentioned larry hogan. he actually made a comment about this yesterday. obviously, he is one of the co-chairs. this is what he told dana bash, him potentially being that choice seat for president. >> 70% of the people in america do not want joe biden or donald trump to be president. if they're going to be the nominees, which it appears that they are, you know, you have choice that no one wants and choice b that no one wants. -- >> choice? b >> i might have to be choice c. >> you just said you believe that there is a path to victory for whoever this third candidate is. what are the names of those people that can beat biden and trump? is it a larry hogan?
10:27 pm
is it a joe manchin? >> i know both of them well. we haven't figured out exactly what the process is going to be yet. that's in the works. we're going to have citizens that are going to make a big decision here in terms of the path that we take. you know, first, we're going to get on these state ballots. second, a little bit later this month, we are actually going to release common sense booklet, like the contract of america, with america that -- pushed back in 94. 25 to 30 principles that will guide where we are in terms of selecting our candidates and then, come, fall we will have a better idea of who they maybe. there is a good laundry list of republicans and democrats who, i, think could actually fit the bill. >> could you name a few of them? >> you talked about, hogan manchin. yeah, i'm sure that they are our good list of folks that could, in, fact attract voters
10:28 pm
to this new labels ticket. >> fred upton, a lot of questions about what that ticket would look like and if you can get on the ballot, of course, we will be monitoring this as democrats and republicans will be as well. thank you very time tonight. >> you bet. >> in the republican, presidential joe race, republican nomination, ron desantis is facing intense backlash over a new attack at that was intended to knock donald trump, but it may have ended up backfiring on him. plus -- a top official for his super pac is warning that he could be in big trouble when it comes to polite. you just heard fred upton mentioning it there. we will show what he said, next.
