donald trump for fighting to stay in power after he lost the election? as a potential indictment looms, the former president quietly beefed up the legal team, and nshgscnn is trying to out what witnesses and counsel the former president has. and now, the eyewitnesses who saw the soldier run across the border, and now officials trying to figure out why he ran. this is cnn "news central." >> right now, all eyes and at least one trump legal team is keeping watch on a federal courthouse in washington, and that is where the grand jury is decision they could make is handing up another criminal

indictment against the former president, and this would be the third time he has been hit with indictments over the 2020 federal election results. and while it is the last day for trump to respond to the target letter, before that same jury, and though unlikely. cnn is learning who will be testifying today, and his name is will russell, a special assistant to trump, and this is his third time to testify. what you hearing about this indictment? what are you picking up about this? >> president trump said in the target letter that he has until today to decide if he wants to go before the grand jury, and we don't expect he is going to do that or formally declip or give the special counsel notice, so that is going to lend itself around ambiguity around the possible indictment. we know from target letters and

the special counsel's previous actions, there is a beat or a few days before anything happen. as you noted the grand jury hearing evidence in this case is seated today, and we know from the reporting that other witnesses are expected to testify in august about this case. right now in the reporting, we are trying to reconcile what we have learned about the target letterb and fact that we are witnessing witnesses in the coming weeks. it is confusing, but these are the actual facts. received the target letter, but some significant people will not speak to the grand jury until august, so at this point, it is not clear when the indictment will come. >> obviously, wait for the indictment, and the trump legal team will have to wait for the charges against him, but are you hearing about what the trump legal strategy would be from what we are gleaning from the

letter? >> yes, i got a glimpse of it into the court case in florida of the mar-a-lago case. and the trump strategy has been delay, delay, delay, and for him personally, the stakes are so much higher, but the refrain is the same. we saw it tuesday. the lawyers said it is not fair to put him on trial before the election, based on the status of the presidency, and they made the argument of the legal cases against him, and criminal and cases in new york, florida and if we see charges in d.c., it will be a similar argument. kaitlan collins said they brought in another lawyer who has been working on the case, and now directly going to help them, but they need all of the help they can get, but the actual strategy is to pursue some sort of delay until after

that they laid out in the target letter. they also want to know who in trump world may be cooperating with the special counsel's team. it is important to know that the charge they laid out in the target letter sunday night are much more sprawling than donald trump's team had anticipate and very concerning for them. many of the witnesses who had gone before the grand jury are represented by lawyers who are paid for by people within trump's world, so it does give them unusual insight to some of the questions that they may be asked of. also, some things that donald trump's team is looking at closely. now, trump's team is to have only until the end of the day to speak before the grand jury where he is supposed to, and not expected to, but we are going to see if he tries to take the opportunity, and when do we expect an indictment to come in

this case, rahel. >> elina live for us in bridgewater. >> good to see you, jennifer rogers, and the trump team is trying to glean what other evidence or witnesses and information that they are surprised by the target letter. do you think that is noteworthy in and of itself to suggesting how different this case is, and why? >> well, most defendants don't know what the case is or that they have been indicted, and the fact that the january 6th e investigation and the reporting of the investigation, and the fact that the people are paid by trump's super pac, and the lawyers, and so he has so much more information about this fact than a normal defendant would, and maybe a false confidence and where it was headed, and surprised by the charges. >> one thing that paula told us is that this is the third time

behind the grand jury, but they have their witnesses scheduled into august to come before the grand jury. do you hand up an indictment with witnesses still out there that you are lingering out there that you need to hear from, and i am trying to find out the grand jury. >> and once the grand jury hands out an indictment, that work is stopped. then you to get a trial subpoena to get more from witnesses. so what may be happening is that they may not indict until all of the witnesses are heard from, and may indict as to the former president, because they are intent of getting this on the ele election -- calendar before the election. and others like rudy giuliani, and others they will continue that investigation after the election continues. >> and so asked what donald trump is going to be facing, and

so far, no one else is getting a target letter, and so far, does anybody else has to get a target letter if it involves conspiracy. >> well, it has to be conspiracy involves two or more people, but it is not usually done without charging a second person, but it is usually because they have someone who is going to testify that they are part of the conspiracy. >> and so far, a january 6th related test against trump is complicated and giving the first amendment issues at play, but you think that what we could be looking at the the indictment in this could be actually much more streamlined case coming from the special counsel, and why is that? does it mean that it is a stronger or weaker case? >> i am one of the people who thought that it would never get across the fin pish line,

because of the finish line, and if you charged all of the false strand, and false electors, you would be talking about dozens of dozen s of people. so i think they are going to focus only on conspiracy and it is a stronger and more focused case, and they will get it done before the election next year. >> tighten up the time line, because it is a lot of backup for why the attorneys are pushing in court to why they are pushing for a delay coming down in succession, and tight time period. over to you, and rahel? >> the department of justice is reporting that texas troopers we are told is to push the migrants back into the rio grande river, and we will take you live to the

this morning, the justice department is now assessing the treatment of migrants ale lock the u.s./mexico border amid troubling reports, specifically claims texas troopers were ordered to deny drinking water to the mi grants in the blistering heat and reports that they were told to push them back into the rivers of the rio grande back toward mexico. we have rosa flores there in eagle pass, texas, near the border for us. what are you seeing? >> this is where it is all going down, kate. and we have saw a large group of migrants pass, and let me set the scene for you, here. the state of texas has several layersf border there. and the first two sets is of constantine wire here, the property owner has asked the state of texas to remove it, and texas refused to do so.

the next layer of the border barrier is the buoys here. there are border buoys anchored to the bottom of the waterway. this is an international boundary, and there are treaties between the u.s. and mexico that govern all of this, and according to the u.s. state department, the state of texas did not ask for permits before deploying the border bare yes, and you can see the group of migrants just passing, and they are make their way to this property which is of course, blocked off by the conser tino wire, and i have seen some groups use their clothing to block getting injured byhe

concertino wire. now, we have not seen much action between texas, and the dps and the national guard, and what the interaction is here, and you can see that the migrants are waiting at the moment. the top brass of the dps has acknowledged that the number of injuries due to this conser tino wire is taking me to the texas state trooper who blew the whistle, and said that they were given the orders to push the migrants back into the river and deny them water. and this is denied by the state of texas. that is not what is going on here, but the state of texas has been told to remove this c concertino wire, and they have

plane to georgia, but instead, he bolted into a demilitarized zone across demarcation line and into north korea. since then, we have learned that king has faced assault charges in south korea, and he was to face a military tribunal, but since, south korea has said nothing about him. and so, first, how is this young man being treated? what types of conditions do you think that he is facing right now? >> it is hard to know, because the north koreans are very paranoid about covid, and so if they were concerned about that, he would be in isolation. it is different from other americans that north koreans have detained when they thought that they were already in the north korea and they detained them whereas he defected to

play into it? >> it is unfortunate time, because we have a u.s. submarine docked in south korea for the first time in four decades and americans having a meeting in the nuclear consultive group to showcase the deterrence, and how strong they are in terms of the north korean threats, and this is what the biden administration wanted to highlight, but of course, the story got hijacked by this young man making a really big mistake. >> before i let you go, and i know that you mentioned that north korea, because he defected maybe they keep him or a propaganda tool like we have seen in the past, in order to release him, what do you think they would want? >> two scenarios, they would say, this is crazy guy, after they find out he does not provide intelligence value and say take him or keep him, because in the past when we have five or six americans who have defected to north korea, only one made it out.

through almost 24 hours ago now. according to the national weather service, it started here in dortches, and i will get wes to pan over across the street. look agent that home, people were inside when the tornado came through. they escaped unscathed, and the home is a total loss. all through this community on town hall road, and the people who live here and i spoke with them, and they are so traumatized, and a woman and her daughter and small grandchildren, and they survived, and they are okay right now physically, and the tornado continued for 15.6 miles into edgecombe county, and destroying 80 structures and homes here. and that is another concern here. nash county, one of the largest employers, pfizer, they have a large manufacturing site here who has one quarter of all to sterile injectables used in the

country destroyed. significant damage in aerial footage here, and pfizer says they are assessing damage, but supply chain experts are concerned. they fear that the damage to this facility may further exacerbate the drug shortage that the country is further impacted by. back out here in dortches, the family in the home, they tell us that the woman who lives here looked outside and noticed it was dark, and that is a storm was coming, but she did not have any real warning at that time, and she says she saw some trees flying and got in here, and again, able to be with her grandchildren and daughter and they escaped without physical injury, and two minutes after the storm, the phone went off with that warning telling them that there was a tornado in their area about two minutes later. she is waiting for the insurance
