8:03 am
if the prosecutors are working on more documents, they have more new documents, because in the last few hours they have received thousands of documents from the legal team head by rudy giuliani to try to find alleged fraud. these documents came from former new york police commissioner bernie keric. cnn obtained many of the documents last night, and a team of us went through them, and rahel, after reviewing them, it does not appear that this is the type of the evidence that wow would have to complete a review with before speaking to former president trump. and in addition to the documents they have three witness interviews over the next three weeks. >> thank you, paula reid.

we will check back in with you. john? >> we have breaking news. it is involving bronny james, the 19-year-old son of the four-time nba champion lebron james. we are learning that bronny james who is going to be a freshman basketball player at usc suffered cardiac arrest while at a practice yesterday. t me read a statement that was just provided to us by the family. yesterday whe practicing, bronny james suffered a cardiac arrest, and medical staff was able to treat bronny and take him to the hospital. he is now in stae condition and no longeinhe icu. we ask for respect and privacy for the james family, and we will update the media when there is more information, and lebron and savannah, the parents of bronny, wish to send the deepest thanks to the usc staff for incredible work and dedication to the safety of their athletes.
8:05 am
so cardiac arrest at practice yesterday. and crucially, resting comfortably and no longer in the icu. dr. sanjay gupta is with us, and andy scholes as well, and now, you give us a statement of what this means to you. >> well, so, he is 18 years old, and sounds like he had a sudden cardiac arrest, and there was a very fast it sounds like resuscitation. taken to the hospital. but, as you are points out given that he was in the intensive care unit, and able to leave the intensive care unit, and go to the general floor, and this is the important headline there, and the cardiac arrest and what triggereded that is what the doctors will be investigating over the next several days. this is rare. we know that a few thousand
8:06 am
people who are young athletes do suffer sudden cardiac arrest every year, and so many different reasons that can happen, and abnormalities of the electric impulses of the heart. and with lamar hamlin, it was kermosho's we was a sud sen blow to the heart. and we don't know at this point, but electrical issue with the heart that was unrecognized until now. and we will get those details, but the important thing is that he was resuscitated successfully. in terms of how the doctor are looking at him now, and they believe he is stable enough now to not believe he is needing intensive care at this point,
8:07 am
and that is good news. >> and andy, i want to bring you into the conversation and bronny is an athlete who had just committed to usc. >> and yes, bronny who is the son of lebron, and he had started at sierra canyon and mcdonald's all-american, and he competed in the slam dunk contest. and you know that bronny james has played hundreds of thousands of minutes of basketball and at a very high level in high school, and going to usc to be a freshman and if it went well at the freshman year there at the trojans that he could make the jump to the nba, and lebron has said it is one of his dreams to play with bronny in the final season, and now we have the wait to see if that would happen anyways, but at this point, we
8:08 am
wish to best for bronny, and we hope that he is doing well, because he is a rising star in basketball, and especially in the college ranks, and people are going to be filling the seats there at usc to watch him play. you know, you hate to see something like this happen, and we certainly hope he is going to be okay. >> sanjay, in terms of the actual medical information, it says cardiac arrest, and you mentioned damar hamlin, and that is something specific that happened. and viewers of my age will know hank gathers and reggie lewis, and how does that vastly compare to heart attack or heart failure? >> well, good question. with sudden cardiac arrest, the heart stops beating which is different than a heart attack
8:09 am
where there is a period of time where the heart is not getting enough blood flow, and the result of the lack of blood flow leads to the damaged muscles where it stops beating as well, and sudden cardiac arrest, and there is no clear-cut problem. and one thing is that you have to distinguish between the people who are older, over the age of 35 and younger. and the causes of cardiac arrest are going to be different. over, it is related to the blood vessels to the heart, and with the younger people, there is a condition known as hypertrophic card cardiomyopathy, which means muscles are not beating as efficiently, and there can be a problem with the chambers of the heart to be beating in a coordinated fashion.
8:10 am
if there is a electrical problem in the heart, that can make a difference. again, we don't know what happened in the scene or at the hospital, but doing the defibrillation to essentially restore that electrical pattern to the heart can make all of the difference, and again, we heard that with damar hamlin, and as you are pointing out correctly l with damar, it was a blow to the chest, but no indication that is what happened with bronny james here. but to andy's point, the people who have sudden cardiac arrest, and if they can figure out what happened to cause this, there is a possibility to address this and he can go on the play and play at the level that he was playing before. again, that is speculative at this point. they will have the investigations to do medically to sort that out. but they will do that over the next few days, and we will have clear answers.
8:11 am
>> anything about a workout, dehydration, or exhaustion or overexertion that could contribute to the likelihood of something like this happening in a practice? >> yes. the answer is yes, and in fact, as the news started to break, it tends to happen more in men than women, and athletes who are competing at a higher level. basketball is one of those sports where you will see the sudden cardiac arrests as well, and the more minutes that you are playing, the higher likelihood of it happening. again, this is rare. no one is suggesting that you are going to be tailoring the number of minutes, but built is dehydration, and the heart working harder possibly bringing something like this on. and so there may have been an underlying condition that may not have posed a problem for
8:12 am
someone, taxing the heart or may have elicited something with the muscles of the heart leading to this sudden cardiac arrest. >> help us to understand the treatment for bronny, because we have heard that he is out of the icu and stable, and walk us through the types of things that happen in the hours and days to come. >> if they let him out of the icu and what they are saying and what we can infer from that, they felt that his heart was now stable and beating in a normal pattern and no reason to believe at this point think he would have another sudden cardiac arrest. keeping him in the hospital to do the tests that you would do, and maybe put an ultrasound on the chest wall to looking at the heart, and looking for any structural abnormalities of the heart. what i was talking about is the muscle of one chamber of the heart bigger than it should be or bigger than the muscles of the other chambers of the heart.
8:13 am
they will look at the electrical pattern of the heart, and over a period of time. so, you know, at baseline it is look like it is fine, and oh, look over here, he is having certain spikes and changes in the electrical patterns, and maybe they will have things that are stressing heart. having him go on a treadmill or medication to speed up the heart to see if the electrical patterns of the heart, and this is the investigation of damar hamlin and he was sicker than what it seems that bronny is, and so he was unconscious for a period of time, but with bronny and given the fact that he is out of the icu, a great deal of comfort there in that, but the investigations to what trigerred this, they have to happen. there's a good chance that there
8:14 am
is an answer. there is a chance that when it happens, there is not an answer as to why it happened, but he may find out. >> and this is a prayer for bronny, and prayer emoji, and thank you for being with me during my entire process. >> we will be bringing in andy scholes, but damar hamlin lost consciousness for an extended period of time on the football field when he had his heart incident, and one thing that we do not know yet, and one thing that is important to assess from bronny james is, you know, how long was he out for? did he need to be resuscitated and anything that you can read into the fact that he is already out of the icu. >> yeah, i have been asking the same questions. when somebody says that someone had a sudden cardiac arrest, you know, again, we will get to the
8:15 am
detail s details, but loss of consciousness and likely needed resuscitation, and likely defibrillation at the time, and that is standard of care, and we will hear, and again to your point, we know the outcome already, and what led to the outcome, and the outcome is that he was taken to the hospital, and the icu, and quickly discharged to the icu and what led up to that point, and we know that he was in the icu and the doctors say that we know what happened, and he is stable enough after we put it together to conduct the exams on the general care floor, and that should provide a lot of comfort, because it is a good sign, and it does not mean that he is out of the woods, and again, we have to figure out what happened here, and we will hear that, but it is a good sign that they were able to make that decision so
8:16 am
quickly. >> i want the bring back andy scholes, and we have talked about this, for lebron, one of the goals was to be a professional basketball player alongside his son on the same team, and talk to us about bronny james the player and individual, and 18 years old going into usc now. >> well, you know, it is so hard to live up to the expectations when your dad is lebron james, right? we rarely see the superstar athlete and the kids follow in their footsteps. at this point, bronny at every single level was reaching that threshold. he started at sierra canyon, and mcdonald's all-american, and competed in the dunk contest, and when lebron says that my dream is to one day play with my son, and people thought that it was farfetched to have those expectations to believe that your son is going to make it into the nba and you to still if
8:17 am
be there, and it was a possibility, because bronny is a four-star prospect, and his dad could still attend all of the games, and as sanjay mentioned, the prospects, and a star player for the florida gators, the player collapsed there, and in a game, and medically induced coma for a few days and before he got out of the coma, the doctors were like, to like sanjay said he ended up transferring to kansas and won a championship, and then the hope is, john and rahel, bronny will have a similar path of keonte johnson, and he will have the similar path, and get back on the basketball court and perform

8:25 am
that there in fact was no fraud in that he had lost the election, and so it is all a piece and goes to the issue that is going to have some jury appeal, and it is going to be important for the jury to understand that he knew the whole time that the election was not stolen, and it had in fact gone to president biden and he was just trying to overturn the results so he could stay in power, and one more note there. >> i would just say that if he got in front of the jury, and trump's defense team would say, yeah, maybe he believed that then, but perhaps he changed his mind as he learned more, and help me to understand the defense case here, and put on the defense hat here, and what is the defense? >> that is absolutely correct. okay, in february 2020 he was given this briefing in oval office, and he thought that it looked great, but as the situation unfolded he came the
