us live from make maui. walk us through what you are hearing there as you wait for the sun to come up. >> reporter: those new death toll numbers coming in overnight, so many people here will be waking up to the fact that 36 of their community members, loved ones, friends have died. information has been slowly trickling in because there are still 11,000 people without power, their communication lines are down. so it has been very difficult. a lot of people over on this side of the island here experiencing a sense of helplessness as they wait to learn what else has happened. >> oh, my gosh, look at the harbor. >> reporter: the view from above is of shock and heartbreak. >> we were not prepared for what we saw. it looked like an area that had been bombed in the war. >> reporter: wildfires rampaging across maui. >> our entire street was burned to the ground. >> reporter: decimating homes

in extinguishing the fires. >> they flew 13 hours, did 58 drops, and about 150,000 gallons of water. >> reporter: recovery will be a long road ahead. according to hawaii's lieutenant governor sylvia luke. >> the damage to the infrastructure, it is not just buildings. i mean, these were small businesses that invested in maui, these were local residents. and we need to figure out a way to help a lot of people in the next several years. >> reporter: and that fire in lahaina, one of three burning on the island that firefighters are contending with. and at the airport, airlines are offering more flights and reduced fares to get people off of the island. officials are asking people to leave and not come here so they can save resources for those who

need it. >> thank you for being on the ground and for that reporting. we are new this morning learning new details about clarence thomas' life off the supreme court bench. this morning propublica broke a new report detailing lavish vacations, private jet trips and vip treatment at sporting events funded by several billionaire friends. let's bring in tom foreman to explain. >> good morning. public support in the bombs for the supreme court has really been dropping. faith in the court, people just are not convinced that it is operating the way it ought to. and this report won't help. most complete accounting yet of the my life of clarence thomas shows much, much more than previously known. more private jets, more fancy vacations, more sporting events all gifts from mega rich businessmen and documented through public and private records plus interviews by

propublica. >> justice thomas has been living a life of extreme luxury for 30 years underwritten by at least four different ultra wealthy benefactors. >> reporter: early reports have revealed lavish gifts to thomas including a house for his mother and a nine day vacation in indonesia from harlan crow. >> i come from regular stock. >> reporter: who also underwrote a film about thomas' humble tastes. >> i prefer the rv parks. >> reporter: and now three more names have been added to the benefactors. the report says that the four moguls collectively treated thomas to 38 destination vacations, including a previously unreported voyage on a yacht around the bahamas, 26 private jet flights plus eight by helicopter. and a dozen vip passes to

professional and college sporting events, two stays at luxury resorts in florida and jamaica and one standing invitation to an exclusive golf club. the dollar value likely in the millions. little of which appeared in required financial disclosures according to propublica. thomas has previously said he didn't feel the need to disclose some gifts. and that worries jeremy fogel, an expert on judicial ethics. >> i couldn't have done this. even if the people involved didn't have interests before the court, it is just the idea that you are receiving gifts of this magnitude. >> reporter: associate justices make about $285,000 a year. in 2001, when they made about $100,000 less, thomas spoke up. >> the job is not worth doing for what they pay. it is not worth doing for the grief. but it is worth doing for the principle.

>> reporter: and now he bristles at questions about his principles. he calls crow merely a friend. crow says they never talk about thomas' work and the new report found none of these wealthy pals seem to have had cases before the court. still -- >> which one of these new ben if he can tors like farharlan crow came into his life after he was appointed. that is why it is problematic. >> and wayne died about five years ago. there is no evidence that these rich friends broke any rules or laws in giving these gifts. and it is not entirely clear technically if thomas broke any rules by accepting them. but what has happened here, the early revelations really raise a public feuror over the idea tha there should be strict and clear rules about what the supreme court justices can and can't

that this is almost certainly an undercount. >> that's right. yeah, we're still reporting. there is evidence that there may be many more. so we're being conservative with our figures but still reporting on it. >> more than 100 people you interviewed for just this. tell people how i found all of this out. >> yeah, so this is kind of a classic daisy chain where you talk to one source who knows three others. but we were reaching out to anyone we could. flight attendants, pilots, drivers, chauffeurs, security guards. anyone who might be in the inner circles and people in the supreme court world and thomas' world trying to get the fullest picture we could. >> and one thing that i was struck by and people should understand is that justice thomas has often talked about living not a lavish life, whether it is in a documentary done on him or things that he's said about, you know, basically

i don't do this job for the money. so he has put forward to the public, has he not, a much more humble lifestyle. >> he has. he has kind of created had image and said multiple times even in his relationship with wayne are he said we just like to sit on the front porch and talk and drink iced tea. but that is not what has happened. he has been flown around, taken to sporting events, taken to his luxury golf club. and so he says one thing but reporting shows other things. >> so propublica reports and tom covered that three benefactors had no legal cases during the documented relationship. how should that inform, if at all, how people consume what is being reported? >> it shouldn't matter at all. because the point here is the appearance of impropriety. the fact that we wouldn't know about any of this if not for

your publication. but how does clarence thomas think the world actually works? we all have friends. do any of your friends pay for your private vacations? it is unheard of. and the reason is this undermines public confidence. we all ask i think logically why on earth are these guys spending millions, why is he accepting this, why isn't he reporting it. and when you see the polls that show that the american's confidence is at an all-time low in the supreme court, i don't think it is because of the judicial outcomes. people will always disagree on that. but i think it is because we're learning about all the money flowing through and the lack of transparency. >> i think that that type of -- supreme court existed where there wasn't really scrutiny applied to some of the justices and i think that matters for the public perception. we're increasingly seeing a public dealing with the reality that these supreme court

justices are experiencing this influx of money, are so close to these kind of billionaires. and i think that appearance of impropriety has released that in. and so the lack of trust building up, and i think it is a buildup of some of these types of things. it goes along with judicial o outcomes also, but just the feeling that the supreme court has existed in a place that was outside of scrutiny and more importantly can't really do anything about it. it is not leading to an outcome that i think a lot of folks would expect when there has been such clear reporting. >> and if i could build on that. whenever there has been an effort to enforce some sort of accountability, the response from the supreme court has been gone. the senate invited chief roberts to come testify and we want to know what your ethical rules were. and chief roberts responded with a condescending letter that said allow me to correct m misperceptions. they like to blame the media for

fostering misperceptions. and he says we consult with, we're not bound by, but we consult with various sources. and it was just this blowoff. and you wonder why people have no faith in them. >> you mentioned that the late justice bes have also taken tri but they were disclosed. but the other question, yes, they may not have had cases before the court, but they ran huge companies in huge industries that had interests in the outcome of other court cases that would set the law that would affect their industry. >> that is a really important point. these are massive industries. they worked in oil, energy, international shipping. mergers and acquisitions kind of

define a lot of their empires. so the idea that they d be totally separated from what is happening in the supreme court is not true. just because they didn't have a direct case. >> and david sokol used to work for warren buffett, he was seen as the heir a parent before he left. in act he gave a speech where he criticized president biden's student loan forgiveness program and said it would be overturned by the court. he was talking about ongoing cases that clarence thomas would decide on. >> and that was one of the first times we had seen one of the benefactors speaking directly to an ongoing supreme court case before there had been a decision. he was pontificating on the outcome. it was common legal commentary at the time, but we found that interesting. >> and neither the court nor justice thomasesnded to the latestorting, but i do want to rat he said in april.

making the threats against biden and a most of other democratic officials. prior to president biden's arrival yesterday, the fbimost officials. prior to president biden's arrival yesterday, the fbi got an arrest warrant and as the s.w.a.t. team was giving him commands, the suspect brandished a weapon towards the agents, a fatal decision. as president biden was heading to utah on wednesday evening, fbi special agents tried to arrest a utah man they said was making threats against the president. when they arrived at his residence in the early hours wednesday, fbi s.w.a.t. agents said he pointed a gun at them while they were giving him commands. >> there was a big boom and then another one and another one and another one. i thought that their house was on fire because there was smoke and red lights. >> reporter: that was the moment fbi special agents shot and killed craig robertson. some neighbors describe what

they heard and saw. >> there was just like a lot of shouting, a lot of loud bangs because i think that they were trying to get him to wake up and get him out of his house. >> i found out later from my next door neighbor that my neighbor had died. they saw him dead in the driveway. >> reporter: robertson was already under fbi surveillance and facing three federal charges according to a complaint from the u.s. attorney. among them making disturbing threats against the president. in one, he wrote i hear biden is coming to utah and that he was going to dust off the m-24 sniper rifle. >> this was someone who they were already concerned about and then he started talking about acting out against the president on this trip. i'm sure that raised everyone's concern to the highest levels. >> reporter: and other charges included retaliating by threat. in recent months robertson also posted multiple threats against other democratic politicians and

prosecutors who have brought cases against former president and now candidate donald trump. alvin bragg was one of those prosecutors robertson was allegedly targeting. in one his posts, he wrote heading to new york to fulfill my dream of eradicating another two bit political hack d.a. and in another post robertson said he was getting ready for the election in 2024 and that he had guns in his house. guns and other potential evidence which may now be in the hands of law enforcement for further review. we live in this heightened threat environment. there is all kinds of vitreal on line. that is the challenge for agencies like the fbi trying to sort out who are just the key board commandos, and those who may actually pose a threat. this suspect's social media history, a lot of the vile deadly threats against these officials, and now we see the fbi going to try to take him

we're learning more about the shear scope of the georgia 2020 election interference case involving president trump and his associates. sources tell us that fani willis is expected to seek indictments against more than a dozen people when she presents her case before a grand jury. that will happen next week. nick valencia is joining us live from atlanta. nick, 12 people potentially. huge number. what do we know? >> reporter: good morning, victor. we know fani willis has been eyeing potential racketeering charges which would allow her to bring a case against multiple defendants. and this is more than just about trump's infamous phone call to the georgia secretary of state raffensperger in which he asked him to find more votes. this is about a pressure campaign from trump operatives on georgia lawmakers, fulton county election workers. this is about an effort to subvert the electoral college by

around him and it was really a group of people there to encourage him against these indictments. and so you not only had the indictments rallying people to his cause, but seeing it as a reason that it would help him secure back the white house. trump kind of does his thing what we expect in these speeches, but people notice that this is a more reserved donald trump. on a donald trump scale of course. but saying that is he not necessarily coming at things in the same way. he is only focusing his energy on the attacking those d.a.s and the forward looking nature. and so folks are rallying around him because of that, but they are also noticing a candidate who is not having necessarily as much fun as donald trump used to be on the trail. i think that that is the reason why we've seen this political and legal strategy completely banned. it is increasingly clear to the people around donald trump that his route back to the white

temperature across the globe. and so we have to treat it seriously. and as the president said even on this trip, in addition to setting aside land at the grand canyon national park, also working with companies to develop more clean energy technology, more clean energy industry. and moving the nation this that transition. it will take some time. but in everything that the president has been doing literally since day one, he has been focused on trying to make sure that we can leave the world in terms of dealing with the climate crisis. >> you don't want to get ahead of the president, so more likely than not he will? >> i'm not making a speculation one way or the other. i won't speak to the president's decision making on that. >> let's move to ukraine. you did an interesting interview with wolf blitzer a few days ago and you said even the ukrainians say the counteroffensive is not going as far or as fast as you

would like. what happens if the ukrainians do not make significant gains in this counteroffensive pretty soon? >> well, look, i think they understand that time is not on their side. the weather is good right now in the summer. it will change in the fall and make it harder for them to maneuver on the ground. and certainly to operate drones and air defense systems this the air space over ukraine. they understand that. they are also running into the teeth of a well armed, well entrenched russian defensive set of formations. and they are doing the best they can to kind of get through that. i think that we shouldn't speculate or try to get ahead of what their operations might look like or what success looks like. they get to termdetermine that course. but they are making progress. it is not frozen, not a stalemate. it is not as far or as fast as president zelenskyy would like to go, but they are making some progress. >> you just mentioned that it will get harder in the fall and certainly into the winter. and what they are running up against from the russians.

another thing you told wolf, you said we've got to make sure we're staying behind them and supporting them. can you elaborate on what that means in terms of u.s. aid? >> it means continuing to give them the kinds of things that they need most in this counteroffensive. and i would add that in the months leading up to the counteroffensive, we fulfilled everything on the ukrainian shopping list. everything that they said they needed for the counteroffensive, they got including training in something we call combined arms maneuver. and we're continuing do that, willing to continue to train ukrainian forces. but more critically we're giving them the tools and weapons that they need to break through the russian offenses. d >> they have been saying that they need more air power. and i understand the training. but they have been calling for more sooner. one big concern is do you have the will of the public. i was struck by the n polling in the last few days that only 45% of americans, this is across parties respect said they believe congress should

authorize more funding to support ukraine. you can guarantee u.s. support for ukraine will remain at this level or increase? >> the president has said publically and certainly privately to president zelenskyy, and not just the president, but other leaders of nato and the gm7 that we'll sta behind ukraine for as long as it takes. and we mean that. and we all want to be over today and hopefully it will be soon. but we have to stay behind ukraine for as long as it takes and i think the american people understand what is at stake. they know it is not just about ukrainian sovereignty or ukrainian lives. it is first and foremost, but it is also about mr. putin and stopping will imbhim before he go any further. he is on the nato eastern flank and i think we understand that if he just gets what he wants and pulls ukraine back into russia, where does it stop. and the cost in blood and pressure to the american people, to our financial health obviously would be much greater

at risk than if we just stay with ukraine right now and help them win back this territory and defend their freedom. >> i want to get the white house response to what we saw happen in ecuador, the assassination of an opposition candidate, fernando villavicencio. shot and killed at this political rally yesterday just north of the capital city. he had been under police protection, he had been very outspoken about organized crime. what is the white house reaction? >> well, very shocking and obviously it is heartbreaking for him and his family and his supporters. and i'm sure that all of of ecur is grieving right now. i saw president lasso declared a state of emergency for a couple months. so it looks like they are taking this seriously. we obviously hope that there will be a full, complete and transparent investigation into this and that the perpetrators are held properly accountable. it is just a horrific scene,

disturbing video. and obviously not what anybody would want for the people of ecuador or frankly ecuador's democracy. >> and finally to the president himself, the fact that in this fbi confrontation with the utah man named craig robertson, he was killed after the multiple threats to president biden just before he arrived in utah. he owned a snirp per rifle and several other firearms. the white house reaction to what we saw play out and the rhetoric that was used. >> obviously i don't want to get ahead of an ongoing investigation here and what the fbi is doing. we're certainly grateful law enforcement, what they could to protect all americans and public officials. we are glad nobody in law enforcement was hurt. i have to refer to the rbi on what the next steps are here and this is really not about just
