around the world. three people are dead in jacksonville after what police say is a racially motivated shooting. the fbi is investigating it as a hate crime. we will go live to madrid for he a report after the women's world cup. we will speak with a doctor about what you need to know to stay safe against covid-19. live from cnn center, this is cnn newsroom. we begin this hour with a deadly mass shooting in jacksonville that authorities are calling racially motivated. three people are dead, two men and a woman were black. a white man in his 20s took his own life after the shooting. he was armed with a ar 15 style

rifle which he decorated with swastikas. writings were found indicating that the suspect quote, hated black people. >> i read part of it. there was one written to the fbi, went to his parents and one to the news media. frankly they are the words of a madman. i am a believer in transparency and a big believer of people seeing. as soon as we finish with it, we will release it. >> the fbi says it has opened a civil rights investigation and will pursue the shooting as a hate crime. we have more on the horrific story. >> reporter: let me bring you up to speed on what the sheriff is saying, the shooter has not been identified, the medical

examiner's office has to be the one to do it. the sheriff saying he entered the dollar general wearing a tactical vest and a mask and he had a ar 15 style rifle and a glock handgun. you can see swastikas on that gun. the sheriff says he killed three people. all three were black. then he turned the gun on himself and shot himself. the shooter recited in clay county with his parents. in 2016 there was a domestic call to the house but no arrest was made. in 2017 the shooter who has not been identified was baker acted. the shooter saying that he texted his father and told him to look at his computer and his father discovered three

documents. 35 minutes later the parents called the sheriff's office but were told by the sheriff that the shooting had already begun. the sheriff says the shooter authored several manifestoes intended to go to his parents, the media and the federal agencies and they included the n word multiple times. the sheriff saying this was racially motivated. here is what else the sheriff had to say. >> we know he acted completely alone. if you look at the images you can see what he utilized. he used a glock and a ar 15 style rifle. this is a dark day in jacksonville's history. the hate behind the killing spree adds a additional layer of heartbreak. as a member of this community i am sickened by this cowardly

shooters personal ideology of hate. >> it is no surprise that the fbi is investigating it as a hate crime and opened a federal civil rights investigation into the shooting. the shooting happened august 26, five years to the day of it different mass shooting that happened at a venue that has since been demolished where a shooter entered a videogame competition and gunned down two people injuring 10 others. a dramatic situation for the jacksonville community that is only beginning to get answers as to how in the world this could happen. >> the shooting took place at a dollar general store located near a historically black school.

we discussed that angle and the implications. >> he is putting on the tactical gear on the campus and he is there with those guns physically. he then runs down the street to shoot three black victims at a dollar store. hate is nurtured. it is in society. though the sheriff is clear to say that nobody else is involved, the reason why this is being investigated is because of its impact on the larger community. every african-american in jacksonville, every parent with a child at that school. every black parent let alone black student. so the investigation is whether or not others knew him and if

others were lowering the shooter to commit this hate crime and that is important because of the terror that comes from this. >>his just in, two dozen u.s. marines are injured after a helicopter crash in northern australia. the marines were flying in the helicopter when it crashed o of a group of lands near the northern city of darwin. five marines are hospitalized including one undergoing surgery. the others are being treated at the crash site. they were involved in a military exercise and it is not clear what caused the helicopter to crash. now to the ongoing crisis in spanish football. they have suspended spain's football chief for 90 days after he was filmed kissing a

player on spain's team moments after they took the women's world cup. he says the kiss was consensual but the player denied that consent. the kiss sparked outrage in many demanded his resignation. hours after his suspension, nearly a dozen members of the foot ball program also resigned. let's go to journalist al in madrid. this story has mushroomed into something significant. >> let's start with the resignation in mass. of the 11 people that resigned, included the entire assistant coaching staff of the team that just took the world cup a week ago.

all of the assistant coaches have now resigned condemning his unacceptable behavior. the coach of the national men's team issued a statement also condemning the behavior and from the club teams, the coach of barcelona in a press conference on saturday had this to say. i believe we do not have it but he basically sided with the player and said this is unacceptable. after all of that, the coach of the women's team that took the world cup issued a statement

where he finally came out after all of this and said his behavior was unacceptable and he was sorry that this hurt the hard earned victory by the team. you have a chorus against him and only a few statements from his own stable in his corner. they said they will try to convince safer that this should have no effect on spain's bid to host the world cup for man. also it puts it into view for all of spain that the issue of which he is no in spain, where the society and governments worked so hard to tamp this down, there is still a lot of work to do. >> thank you as always. joining me now from barcelona

members also supported him with applause and condoned his behavior. this is why the public outcry has been so loud and strong and gathered support throughout the world. we are also seeing a increasing awareness among society about what sexual consent is and what power abuse is. it is a powerful movement these players are initiating throughout the world. >> he still seems to enjoy some level of support. has he unintentionally blown the lid off of the challenges that female footballers face in the world? >> his attitude is a demonstration of what female players have to endure in professional sports. also in their daily lives.

we have all been subject to these different forms of harassment in our work place, forest kisses, grabbing, touching and the demeaning. this is why women from all fields are sending their support. at the same time, he is losing all of the support he has and by early next week he will probably be dismissed by the sports council in spain. >> let's talk more about these women, what are they up against? is the spanish federation a and two teeth that is prepared to change? are they willing to change? >> definitely, these events will force the federation to move forward and instill real change in women's football.

federations and all women who are practicing sports efficiently or non- professionally. while he needs to be dismissed as well as everyone that failed to hold him accountable, then this sports federation needs to be forced to train on gender issues. all members of the board. they need to be able to identify these instances of not just sexual violence but also power abuse which is pervasive in professional sports. this training in the adequate implementation of all protocols need to set new standards on how football federations and other

he was listed as a passenger on a private plane that crashed on wednesday but his death has not been confirmed and the kremlin denies any role in the crash. earlier this week british officials said it was likely he was killed in the plane crash. if it is confirmed he joins a growing list of high profile russians that fell from the good graces of vladimir putin and died in mysterious ways. >> reporter: the kremlin says vladimir putin had nothing to do with it but western leaders are not so sure. there is no evidence that russia's leadership brought down the jet but he is the latest of many figures harmed after crossing the president. alexander fell ill in the uk

sign up for xfinity rewards now. turning to the top story, the deadly mass shooting in jacksonville now under investigation as a hate crime. three people killed in the incidents. all of the victims were black. the sheriff said the suspect was a white man in his 20s who took his own life after the shooting. he had two guns, one of which he decorated with painted swastikas. the sheriff also said writings were found indicating that the suspect hated black people.

even as the shooting was unfolding, thousands of people gathered at the lincoln memorial to mark 60 years since martin luther king jr. expressed a dream of a america without racism. the 60th anniversary of the march brought out civil rights activists and young ones as well. as jason reports, many of the same issues raised 60 years ago are still on the agenda. >> we spoke to people all over the country that came out today to hear from speakers across the spectrum of the civil rights movement. one of the ongoing themes addressed here over and over again is voting rights. it was a issue 60 years ago. civil rights leaders say it continues to be a issue today. one of those driving home the point, andrew young, a noted civil rights activist, he was

here today, 91 years old. he was here 60 years ago. he worked alongside martin luther king jr. and he gave his assessment on the condition of the country today. >> the vote is the passport to freedom and opportunity. that is hard work but it is good work. do not get mad, get smart. do not look at all of the things that are wrong, look back at where we were 60 years ago when we first marched and martin luther king said give us the pallet and then he said i have a dream and he gave his life for it. >> reporter: some of the other issues being brought up, education equality and economic inequality. some of the same issues addressed 60 years ago.

organizers say they are issues that still need to be addressed today. the trump campaign claims it raised more than 7 million since the former president and current residential candidate was processed in atlanta. those donations will not block his legal trouble in georgia. jeremy has more. >> reporter: now that the 19 defendants have surrendered, we are getting into complicated questions as to how the trial will proceed. two of the defendants have requested a speedy trial but that is something the former president is opposed to doing. a judge has set a date in october and that remains to be seen what that means for the rest of the defendants.

another issue is whether the case is kept in state court or moved into federal court. five defendants have made the request. in state court it would be in fulton county which is a blue county but the federal court will expand the jury pool potentially including more pro- trump jurors. we will see this play out when we get the venue of the case. for meadows, the da is planning on subpoenaing witnesses that could testify giving us a preview of what this case against meadows and the other defendants will look like. a crane snapped above a miami hospital campus killing one person and injuring four more. that 200 foot crane was

carrying a load when the tragedy happened. that load fell on workers renovating air handlers. some patients have been moved to other areas of the hospital out of caution. the cause is under investigation. the death toll from the wildfires in hawaii remains at 115. crews are trying to identify hundreds of the missing. the focus is also on the role that the utility may have played in causing the outbreak. >> the county is saying negligence and carelessness of hawaiian electric is directly responsible for the fire. the company denies that an looming large is the issue of preserving evidence, to find out how the fire started. as hawaiian electric faces litigation, we learned the

company acknowledges that some vital evidence in the investigation may have been compromised but thutility says it is not to blame. in a letter included in court documents, the company writes, hawaiian electric is taking reasonable steps to preserve its on property damaged or destroyebecause of the fires, however officials are moving forward to fight the fires and impede that effort, it is therefore possible that the actions of the third parties may result in the loss of property or other items that relate to the cause of the fire. so this story about evidence possibly being compromised was first reported by the washington post but in a email, hawaiian electric says the allegations are inaccurate and they did not elaborate.
