to 12 feet in some areas, and so that would be life-threatening storm surge. you run from the water and you hide from the wind. if you are there in storm surge, you are putting your life in jeopardy when it gets to be that high. >> at least 22 florida counties have issued evacuations. 10 of the counties have made evacuations mandatory. we have the cnn team tracking every angle of the storm, and we begin with eric van dam who is live with us in clearwater, florida. derek, what is biggest risk for people right now? >> without a doubt, storm surge, boris. it is the main concern with this storm, but so many other threats from idalia from inland flooding to constructive winds to bring down trees, power lines and you name it, it is a lot, but we will talk about the storm, and the details first, a then we
7:01 am
will get to threats. hurricane idalia is strengthening. 80-mile-an-hour winds with this particular storm, and then looking briefly at the satellite composure, and this thing is becoming more organized as the minutes wear on, and it is a concern, because it is tapping into the warm ocean waters there. is the forecast track from the national hurricane center strengthening to the category 2 by 2:00 p.m. today, and then to category 3 which is the consistent message before landfall with the rapid strengthening and intensification. i wanted to show you this, because we have been showing you how warm the waters have been in the gulf of mexico, because they are running from 2 to upwards to 4 degrees fahrenheit to where they should be above where that he were. this is beyond bathtub water, and more like hot tub water.
7:02 am
this is what we are anticipating with the storm making major impacts across the florida big bend region, and you not rul e out areas near here. i will show you near this barrier island that is a beach that stretches for miles behind me. this water behind my right shoulder is a few feet deep. even if you traveled out 50 feet from here. so that shallow nature coupled with the warm ocean water means a strengthening hurricane to build up all of that water into the location. if we are getting into the specifics here, tampa bay, we are forecasting between 4 to 7
7:03 am
feet for some of the low-lying susceptible areas. also, are getting into the closer areas there with the barrier islands and the low-lying areas there, that is a concern of 4 to 7 feet where we are now, but further north, big bend, it is highly susceptible, and one of the most susceptible in the nation for storm surge, look at the reds and the oranges, and that is because the shallow nature of the water, but also the topography of the land. it is like a catcher's mitt to catch all of the water, and then push it on shore. we talk about hurricane irmine, and that was six feet, and we are forecasting 8-12. looking at the sea gusts here from cedar key to tallahassee and gainesville, it is winds
7:04 am
with over 80 miles per hour, and that is the inland communities as well. the swath is moving inland to the georgia/florida border wednesday and into thursday and this is also important, because remember, this storm is not just a florida storm, and we are talking about georgia and into the carolinas thursday and friday. so many states at play here across the southeast. boris. >> stunning to see, derek, just how rapid the storm is intensifying with the warmer water, and warmer than in years past. derek van dam from clearwater, florida. 5 million people under hurricane warnings, rahel. >> and five dozen counties. and people are racing to prepare as hurricane idalia approaches, and the officials are also getting ready. this morning the coast guard was positioning rescue boats ahead of any rescuing, and also position aircraft. sara sidner, you is been there
7:05 am
all morning long, and from what you can tell, are people taking warnings seriously? >> most people are, yes. i have talked to the head of fema, and the fema administrator, and the st. petersburg police chief and the mayor here in clearwater and every one of them are saying same thing and speaking with the same voice, if you are in an evacuation area, you need to get out now. i know the weather is lovely and beautiful and it looks like paradise and feels like nothing is going to happen. this storm is coming, and it is coming quickly. you need to get out so you are not stuck in traffic and in that very dangerous storm surge that we are expecting which from derek van dam just said, 6 to 12 feet which is twice my height. imagine the water and the power of the water. you cannot fight that and your car cannot fight that. they are telling people, get what you need like your medicines, like your animals,
7:06 am
and make sure that you, you gather your animals that are obviously a part of the family, and there are shelters who do take the animals, and check that out as well at floridadisaster.org. yes, it is attractive and beautiful, but it is going to change somewhere this afternoon, and that is where you will see the bands of rain coming on shore, and there at least 20 counties in some form of evacuation mode. some of them are mandatory orders which is that you need to listen to authorities and get out. you are in danger. others are voluntary where you are in a dangerous spot, and to make sure that you are better safe than sorry, you should also think of leaving and what all of the authorities are saying that you don't have to go hundreds of mile or to another state, but just get away from the low-lying areas, because it is the water.
7:07 am
the wind is going be ferocious, but the water is the most deadly and damaging and dangerous to human life. that is why they are telling people, take all of this serious le. i do want to let you hear to someone who is very human, who has the same feelings as a lot of people when you are told, hey, you need to leave your home, and the place that you love. i want to let you listen to one of the residents who is grappling with this right now. >> sunday, it was like, it is coming. and then it was like get out, it is mandatory. i don't know if i want to leave or not. i don't know where to go. >> and this is difficulty, right? you love your home, and that is where you are most comfortable, and you think perhaps it is going to be fine, but if the storm surge comes up to 6 to 12 feet, you won't be fine. the water will get into your home, and if you are in one of the evacuation areas, you in
7:08 am
danger, and we can all understand the feeling of i don't know where to go, and i don't want to go, and there is going to be people who stay, but emergency services have been very clear, if those winds get to the 50 and 60 and 70-mile-an-hour winds and upwards to 80 and 100-mile-an-hour winds, they are not going to be able to come to rescue you until the danger for them has passed. you on your own. so listen to authorities and get to where you need to go. there is information online and you can ask your local police officer. they know where to go. that is one way that people can keep themselves safe. rahel. >> make the decisions while you have to chance to make the decisions. sara sidner live in clearwater, florida. we will check back. boris. >> let's hear with a official in charge of services in the path,
7:09 am
and david decarlo is there in tampa, and something that the governor pointed out the big bend area in the cone of uncertainty, and it does not often get storms of this magnitude, and i wonder what you are anticipating where you are. >> well, good morning and thank you, boris, for having us. joining us is the county administrator jeff rogers and the director of fire safety paul hoffst hoffstyler. we are expected 6 to 9 feet above ground level, and that is life-threatening and catastrophic storm surge. we are also worried about the strong winds and the tropical force winds that begin later this evening, and it could last a very long duration, so even after the storm makes landfall, there is a potential for the storm surge to continue into the hernando coast and from pasco
7:10 am
county northward. >> we heard from a resident in the path of the storm, and she was a bit older and talking about the difficulty in trying to get out, and i imagine a lot of residents in that position right now going back and forth as to whether they should evacuate or hunker down, and what is your advice? >> my advice is to please heed the evacuation notice, the warnings. we have a mandatory evacuation notice in place that started at 7:00 a.m., and i would recommend that they contact the local emergency management officials in whatever county. we have four shelters open now, and we have a citizens hotline to get information on shelter that they can call. also, we provide the transportation. if you need help to get to the shelter, we can provide that, and this is what we do in the emergency management. please call for transportation if you need it. heed the warnings, because it is
7:11 am
catastrophic storm surge. there going to be cars and boats displaced throughout hernando beach, and pine island and i imagine many other counties on the west coast of florida. >> so talk to us about preparations for folks not in evacuations areas and desiring to not hunker down, and how much time do they have? >> well, the tropical force winds are forecasted for later in the evening, and i can't pinpoint the exact time, but we have hurricane force winds coming in this evening as it makes landfall, and if you live in the structure that you don't think that you can withstand the hurricane or tropical force winds or if you live in an rv
7:12 am
park, please seek shelter to get out of the path of the storm. >> and we know that there was gas station with contaminated gas, and it could potentially become an issue for folk, and what can you tell us that you are doing to prevent that? >> we have been in contact with the emergency report functions for fuel, and been in contact with state of florida about that fuel, and we have been in contact with that fuel spot, and we have been working with the fuels in the ports to make sure that there are fuel in the area, and there are a few stations that have run out, and we are awaiting the delivery and it is going to depend when the tropical force winds come n and the commodities are not going to be delivered and we have identified that particular gas station that has been messaged out. >> on the question of commodities, are you concerned that residents may face
7:13 am
shortages going to different locations and stores to pick up things like water and batteries? >> that is always a concern. so, our messaging before the hurricane season is to be prepared and have a kit and make a plan and share the plan with the families and phrenfriends t evacuate, and let them know where you are going, and have enough necessities if you go out of town, but we have shelters open, and heed the evacuation notices, because this is going to be a deadly storm. we haven't seen anything like this in a long time. we had experienced hurricane hermione, and we are concerned about the storm surge. if you are needing to evacuate, we have shelters open, and we can help with the transportation. >> david , we will connect durig and after the storm, and we are

co-defendants in the state's election subversion case. the judge is set to rule on whether trump's former chief of staff mark meadows can move his case from state court to federal court. med adows took the stand for hos yesterday, and will the gamble pay off. zach cohen was there, and what happens next? >> good morning, boris, you are right. everyone is watching and waiting on a decision from the judge to see if they will allow mark meadows to move his case to federal court, and the judge alluded to the fact that it could impact all 19 defendants including trump himself saying that decision is going to likely set a precedent for all of the cases. we know that four other defendants in addition to meadows have filed motions to try to move their case to the federal court, and the former president is expected do the same thing, and we saw one of his lawyers in the courtroom when meadows was testifying.
7:20 am
that is how powerful this judge's decision is as he makes the decision as to whether or not mark meadows can move his case to federal court. >> and also, another big decision was the start date of federal case of the subversion of march 24th from judge ch chutkan, and this is coming from a loaded primary calendar, and one day before super tuesday. >> yeah, boris, it is going to be a busy spring 2024 for donald trump. if you are looking at what is on tap just in march, you can get a glimpse of what the rest of the year might look like, and march 20th, 2024 is when the subversion case is to start, and the next day is one of the biggest day in the republican campaign trial, and when most of the states are going to vote for who they want to represent their party in the election, and then
7:21 am
at the end of the month the start of the hush money trial. and trump is going to have to weigh the political calendar, and his criminal cases as he is trying to become the next president of the united states, and he going to have to spend his days of the week in a courtroom, and while he is running for president, and this is remarkable unchartered territory that we are in. >> unchartered territory is right. rahel. >> and what do these new dates mean for candidate trump. we will discuss it with co-host of "politically georgia" and also, margaret who is from axios. and that trial date of monday march 24th, the day before super tuesday, and have the early states just gotten that much more important? >> i think that you can argue, rahel, they are. iowa is more important for donald trump to try to lock down to seal his momentum, and new hampshire is holding a bigger
7:22 am
importance for his rivals in trying to slow the momentum, and if he were to win votes, he could in theory be pretty much sealed by super tuesday and looking at the other states in the leadup to super tuesday, and you have nevada, south carolina, michigan and these are big states if trump can rack up the numbers, it really matters. on the other hand, ironically it may give donald trump a reason to promote early voting, mail-in voting and any kind of way to get the primary vote cast earlier which is as you will remember in 2020 he was so opposed to, claiming it was part of the supposed fraud against evidence, and this is against the primetime covid time, and the more support he can lockdown before the march 4th day, and the march 5th super tuesday date, the more less risk that

trial poses, and the more it will cause him in theory that he will argue that the prosecution is political, and so he will try to use it to his advantage. >> and so, bill, i want to bring you into the conversation, and they have tried to oust fani willis, and there is a law in the senate that would do just that, and at least one republican in the state has taken the steps to start the process, and how do you see this playing out? >> well, in the last session of the general assembly, you are right about the bill which governor kemp backed all of the way was passed. it does set up a commission which can investigate and potentially remove from office district attorneys if the commission feels are not performing their responsibilities in dealing with crime. at the time that the bill was going through, there were many people who said that it would end up being directed at fani willis, and yes, there are now
7:24 am
members of the republican party in the legislature who say that when that commission is finally seated in october, they are going to bring fani willis before them to try to have her removed from office. how will that play out? it is anyone's guess at this point. >> really quickly, what has the reaction been in georgia from other prosecutors about the idea of ousting fani willis? >> we, i mean there are other prosecutors under the gun as well, and other african-americans who are saying that it is led to be a racist effort to disenfranchise and get rid of a prosecutor or prosecutors who are african-american, but this commission is moving forward and in october, we will find out who the members are, and what they want to do in a partisan way to remove willis or other district attorneys who they are unhappy

with. >> margaret, we will stay in georgia and trump's arraignment next week in this trial in georgia could be televised and we know that federal proceedings are not, and how big of a game changer could that be polit politically? >> it is sort of untested, but what has happened so far, an criminal proceedings have not been televised, but everything that has happened since the 2020 election including january 6th, and the televised hearings have helped to entrench the president's lead. it a different matter in a court of law, so it is harder to spin coverage, but ultimately, a lot of the questions about how is that is going to impact vote. you have to look at two baskets, how does it impact the primary vote is a different question than the general election. >> yes, it is a fair point.

bill, let me give you the last word because you are based in georgia and based on your reportings and conversations, sticking with the primary voting, where do the voters in georgia stay on this? >> well, to point out the atl "atlanta georgia constitution" dropped a poll that fani willis indicted trump and 18 others on a criminal enterprise to overturn the election, and yet 57% in the poll following indictment said that they are strongly behind donald trump for the nomination. only 15% gave their nod to ron desantis. all of the rest were in very small sing-dle digits. sot before trump actually goes to the courtroom and faces a trial, georgia voters on the
