death toll tops 2100. an urgent search here in the united states, an escaped killer is taking new steps to try and blend in. plus a victory for spanish soccer players, this kiss is out. details. on life news. and it is 7:00 a.m. in morocco where many have spent yet another night outside after friday's powerful and deadly earthquake. more than 2100 people have been reported killed and rescuers continue to dig through the rubble in a frantic search for survivors. the 6.2 quake is the strongest to hit morocco in over 120

years. near the quake's etch center in the atlas mountains scenes of destruction and devastation with homes and small villages reduced literally just to piles of rubble. rescuers in morocco are still digging through that rubility and of course they are clinging for hope that they will find survivors. many who did make it through are sleeping outside in alternates. more from marrakech. >> reporter: still grappling with the aftermath of the 6.8 earthquake. marrakech, families line through outside, too scared to sleep inside. >> all our houses are cracked, they could fall down any moment moment and that's why we can't go back. all these people are afraid to come back home. >> reporter: the city lice about 45 miles away from the

epicenter but the extent of the damage is evident. you could see this building behind me, a unesco world heritage site but in other parts of the country, devastation has been far more severe. along the path of the atlas mountains, rescuers in a race against time, desperate to find survivors. the more they dig the higher the death toll. adding to the more than 2,000 lives lost, and what has become the deadliest quake to strike the country in decades. pushing through grief many are queuing up here in marrakech to donate blood. it is an act of solidarity and there has been an outpouring of support from the international community. with offers of aid from countries including the u.s., japan, france and the uae.

but the challenges ahead for morocco are immense and the recovery effort may well take years. nathan bashier, cnn marrakech. joins us life, larry, you have, the concern is whether the kingdom of morocco has coordinated things quickly enough. what more do we know especially since we have seen all these offers of international aid? >> reporter: there has been criticism paula that morocco is not accepting offers of aid when it needs it. in high mountainous zones of the atlas mountains, only the king has agreed to help from there

have been offers from so many more parts of the world that have not accepted. this explanation here from morocco is if they get too many people on the ground it could be counterproductive. so the interior minister's explanation is they could take more offers there friendly nations but beyond some temporary accommodation these bright yellow tents that people are sheltering under there are people who need medicine and food and emergency supplies that they're just not getting now. and yet there are so many countries offering support and they are not getting it. in the absence of support, neighbors are helping neighbors. people who have suffered earthquakes before are coming to their aid. i want you to listen to one man. >> we the inhabitants of the rift region have experienced the earthquake twice.

still you pushing to get an escaped killer back behind bars as the manhunt enters day 12. state police held a press conference, you are looking at the picture of danelo cavalcante. they wanted to make sure the people would see the pictures. on the heels of him being spotted many times this weekend. they now know that cavalcante has gotten ahold of this van. there is concerns that he has crossed state lines already. >> reporter: the house you see behind me in chester county pennsylvania serving as a temporary command center for this search as they work to track down danelo cavalcante. the latest developments are considered a, quote, minor set back. when you look at those developments that certainly could be considered an understatement. authorities don't even know

where to begin searching now. here is why as you retrace the steps of the escaped killer. they believe at one point he managed to escape that lockwood gardens, authorities have looked at for several days. he made it onto a dairy farm which authorities believe he managed to steal a van because keys were left inside. cavalcante is believed to have gone north, where a surveillance camera at the residence of a former colleague of his actually captured him there. if you look at this happen, this is the latest image, showing cavalcante, in good spirits, especially someone who has been on the run for a day an a half. eventually cavalcante resumes his drive making to northern

castle cavalcante, the vehicle literally ran out of gas forcing him to ditch that car and that is where a temporary perimeter is set up, authorities are searching that particular area though they have no reason to believe that he could potentially still be there. during a press conference on sunday, lieutenant commander george bivens addressing questions, that he was able to slip away from men and women in law enforcement. >> unfortunately there are a lot of circumstances, a lot of issues associated with that property. tunnels, very large drainage ditches. things that could not be secured. you couple that with weather, aviation being down for a night. there are many complications, again no excuses. >> >> reporter: very much still remains a search focused in pennsylvania though federal

authorities are still involved. especially given the initial concern he may have been headed to mexico and potentially to his native brazil. authorities did say that his sister is in the custody of immigration and customs enforcement. they did say one of the biggest focuses right now is to try to prevent a potential carjacking but also to cut off any potential support that cavalcante may return to. paul sands, cnn. >> alleged sexual conduct. mel tucker has been suspended without pay. as authorities expel the fact that he may have acted inappropriately. tucker claims his relationship with tracy was, quote, mutually

>> u.s. presidential candidate nikki haley is touting results from a recent polls arguin shows she is the onlcontder to take on joe biden. now in the poll, trine% of the respondents say they support haley, compared to those who back biden. haley says it is a sign that the u.s. wants someone else in command and she is the leader to do it. i think the majority of americans know we need a new generational leader that we need to lead the negativity of the past behind us, the majority of americans don't want to see a rematch between trump and biden, that's been very clear. this is the beginning of it.

we have got quite a bit to go before we get to january. >> senior editor at the atlantic and he joins me from los angeles. nikki haley i found her blunt in terms of what she just said. what do you make of voters, in this argument, she believes that she's the only candidate that could beat trump in a head to head race. she is taking age head-on. will it work? is it a point that will recess 98 -- resonate with voters? >> the problem is the electorate is very old. inment of these states, two in other words, three quarters of the voters are over 50. i don't see that as decisive against trump. maybe on the bank shot that he could not exploit the opportunity created by the concerns by biden's age, he is

federate old himself, almost the same age. but i think haley, the reason she is polling better in the cnn poll, she is polling much better among college educated white voters, who find his cultural bell image rens essentially in-- belligerence essential unacceptable. that's her opportunity getting past him in the republican primary obviously remains a tremendous challenge. >> i want to go to iowa now. it was a busy weekend especially in football games especially but donald trump tailgating at a football game. >> u.s.a, u.s.a, u.s.a. >> you know, he was essentially robbed and they were yelling u.s.a. now there are reports from the same events saying he didn't get

quite the reception we are looking at there. what does that tell you though about iowa, first up in that gop primary? >> well he has a passionate following in iowa as he does everywhere else. but iowa has a recent tradition as you know in the republican primary. in 2008, 2012, 2016, it bypassed the front runner, by moibilityzing the state's population of evangelicals. trump is clearly ahead in iowa. there may be run for someone to upset him. ron desantis was in the iowa area as well, he is the best shot that opponents have to try to trip him up. because it is even true given

the magnitude of his national lead, if they can't disrupt the race, destabilize his lead very early on, it may be impossible to beat him in new hampshire if you don't beat him in iowa. the other candidates in the race are really heavily investing in those two states but i think especially in iowa where there is at least some tradition of those voters in a relatively small turnout event being able to look beyond the front runner. >> what struck me was the fact that there isn't any candidate getting that photo opportunity that is beamed all throughout the country. it is what it is as far as enthusiasm. former new york mayor michael bloomburg saying the asylum system has collapsed in the united states. a quote there him. he says we have a system that

essentially allows an unlimited number of people to cross our borders, forbids them from working offering them free housing and grants them seven years of residency before ruling on whether they can legally stay. it is madness. do you think this will be on the ballot in 2024? >> yes, there is no question america is dissatisfied with biden's management of the border. pollsters believe by and large this is a voting issue, voters who are unlikely to vote for him anyway, republican voters, but the pressure being put on democratic cities i think is something he is going to have to address and the paradox of course is that we have reporters all over the occurrence complaining they can't find enough workers. wage inflation because we don't have enough workers after the decade of the 2010s was the second slowest in history and

now large numbers of people for variety of reasons in federal law are here as former mayor bloomberg knows, are legally prohibited from working. it would seem that is the point of least resistance where biden has to figure out a way to allow more of the people who are in these shelters in places like new york to work and to contribute to the community and to, you know, move off the public dime. and i've got to think, you know, there are a lot of groups that are really pressing on him to do that and to find a way to loosen the pressure on these big cities. >> ron brownen stein thanks so much for weighing in. >> thanks for having me. >> hurricane lee is impacting the country. here is the big question where is it headed next?

album, songs for. >>nawaz: maui. helve host a benefit concert that thankfully is already sold out. it's been a little more than a month since wildfires killed 154 people in maui and 66 people are still unaccounted for. and jack johnson joins me now from oahu, hawaii, thanks so much, really appreciate seeing you. you were born and raised in hawaii, hawaii is home. and you know maui and obviously the unspeakable tragedy that they have just gone through. i'm just curious, what was your initial reaction as you saw that unfoamed? >> just -- unfold? >> just i meanwhile like i'm sure everyone, just total heartbreak. it's a place growing up yeah like you said i grew.on oahu and spent another had of time on maui, a lot of close friends and

my parents' friends. we camp often maui and that area in particular have a lot of childhood memories of being in lahaina, seeing the images and hearing the stories from trends, about how devastating it really was. i mean we've all seen the images and it's kind of knowing the town and then seeing how it looks now, it just was too much. i mean i think it was almost surreal at first with the images. but then hearing the stories and connecting with people that had lost everything. my heart just goes out. i'm just sending all of my love in the community in lahaina now. >> to that point song for maui, your new album comes out this week, featuring hawaiin musicians. talk about the resonance it has now for you after this tragedy and of course the money raised, where is that intended?

>> yeah, so the album was actually recorded back in 2012. the idea came out because a lot of friends here in hawaii, a lot of musicians started calling and texting each other about what are we going to do, let's get a show together when the time is right. we're going to put up a live show next week and there's been a lot of people that have sorted pivoted to make any of their shows for maui right now. lots of people coming together and support the best they can. we started to talk about a live show, we started thinking about putting out recordings that could support the community for a longer period, me and paula fuma and john cruz, we started talking about that show in 2012 and remembering it was such a nice night.

we were trying to find a nice song and we found prettiful the whole set that we played together, felt really good. you could he hair the love from the audience and it felt so right trying to take that love and trying it back on maui and to help for a better cause and to support that community. where the money will be going, it's going to be such a long term project, right now, people are focusing on just immediate relief. here is the maui hub, there is common ground collective, there is the hawaii community foundation is a really great place to donate to, they have the maui strong fund and so a lot of people have been putting support there. it's going to be, they have like a four phase plan of support sog it's long term. so those are a lot of the places that were already supporting as soon as we heard the news. but we're also doing now a lot of conversation with people who

are boots on the ground just working every day and just trying to really listen. you know everything happened so fast and everyone wanted to make sure to just support as soon as they could. now it's been a month now since the fires. and so now it's really about taking a breath and listening to that community and understanding how we can best support from outside and where they need the help. and there's a -- you know, there's some stories within the community, there's a group, it's a polynesian voyaging group, and they had one of the oldest hawaiian sailing canoes that was made, the it is the sister canoe to the hukulele, one piece made it through the fire. they are going to be rebuilding eventually. just hearing stories like that and having conversations with

groups like that about how we can support long term these really important things, they are the heart of the community to make sure we rebuild the those things as well that the culture is based around, the hawaiian culture. a lot of lahaina based education, based education, there are a lot of groups that have been doing work for so long in that area that we just want to continue to support as time goes on. so with the album we're just feeling lucky that in a way ten, 12 years from now we could be supporting this long effort. >> . take a long time to rebuild. you wife kim, happy birthday, she is celebrating, cheers to her. if you had to explain to people what maui needs most now what do the people need now a month on as you say? >> i mean just all of our love.

but as far as supporting financially, i think a really good way for people to do that from outside is the hawaii community foundation, maui strong fund. they are here in hawaii and they know what's going on and that's a really good lace to support. they are giving donations to smaller nonprofits and figuring out the best way to support in the long run too. yeah at this point it is like nobody has shelter, it's well people are sheltered now short term and whatnot and so it is going to be about rebuilding at this point. making sure people are fed and those groups that i've listed, those are good groups right now making sure people are having food and the basics. sw. >> as a son of hawaii can you talk about the resilience of the folk in maui and their determination thousand to make sure that they do rebuild and

rebuild in the right way? >> yeah. i think you said it right there. just making sure, i think there is a lot of people that are really worried and rightfully so, really anxious about what's going to happen next. there's a lot of generational families that lost everything they had and just wanting to make sure that they have a chance to rebuild and have their home, still be their home. and so i wish i had all the answers. i think it's just an important time to make sure that all thosd of those communities, the things that the community was based around, returned, and that community gets to rebuild the way they want to, to make it as good as it was before and even better, you know, if possible. it's hard to imagine in this dark time that, you know, the positives yet but if we can kind of find those stories about like mokolele and get behind things like that. the resiliency is there, to make
