joining me now is rhonda garelick, the professor of english and journalism as smu. she writes the new york times phase four column about the intersection of fashion media style and politics. her latest just published. what we lose when we loosen dress codes. it occurs to me, professor garelick, is a difficult subject for women and men insofar as i am a god. i change my tie in my shirt and i can have on the navy blazer and you would be none the wiser. >> uab absolutely right. genders a huge consideration. because for one thing, the business standard, which is the former senatorial standard, it is actually based on a male pattern of clothing.

the dark suit, simple shirt. women, as you suggest, have 1 million micro decisions that they need to make from head to toe in order to present themselves in public. in each one of those decisions risks to be over somehow into inappropriateness. it is actually much easier for women to have some sort of dress code, it need not be to be a formal uniform. standards that at least restrict the very vast numbers of problematic decisions. this is a gender decision. >> i thought you made an excellent point in your latest new york times essay . i'm going to put part of it on the screen and read it aloud. i want you to amplify on this. adults dressed in all recognizable's respectful manner ". it creates a unified visual entity, a group in which individuals have agreed to subsume their dissonances into a overarching sartorial hole. talk to me about that. >> yet. it's very important to remember that something like the senate, it's a body. it's a collector of cultural body. and, when we can see similarities amongst a large group of people who represents something larger than themselves, that enhances the idea of unity. militaries, sports teams, certain school teams. when we look at them, we perceive them as a body. i always say that fashion is very intimate in that it is the place where the culture touches us, touches our bodies. it's where we integrate ourselves into the larger society.

something like the senate is not your average work place. it's not just body still that represents our nation not only ourselves in the country but to the world at large. while i do not believe that it needs to be a strict uniform of the exact identical clothing, obviously, i do think we want to enhance the perception for ourselves, for the senators, for the world at large, this is a collectivity. it works together for larger groups than just individuals. >> i love that observation. i like the optics of some form of uniformity. this is because of all of the dissension, and polarization that exist in the body and across the country. whatever fought on this i have, the staffers will be subject to a dress code. correct me if i'm wrong. how do you see that dynamic playing out? >> you are absolutely right. i did write about this in my column. the new dress code relaxation

applies only to the senators themselves. there are a lot of other people work in the senate, staff, interns. they will be required to wear formal business attire and what that will do is create a dissension between the senators and the rest of the employees of the senate. this will oddly only exacerbate a kind of class stratification. since clothes only mean things in relation to other close, what we are going to have, much of senators in different states of leisure where being served by a cadre of people in formalwear which will start looking potentially like livery, or waiter staff, garb. because every thing is relational. i do not think that's a legal totalitarian message and i do not think that is a impetus behind relaxing of codes. there is no such thing as complete freedom and dressed any more than there is complete freedom and how we speak. it's all in relation to other people and their speech,

attention may veer off to the sideline. football legend deion sanders coaching university of colorado buffaloes through record-breaking victories. sanders, known as coach prime, signed on last year revamping the team that last season had 11 losses. ranking in the top 20 now. university of colorado announcing back in april had already sold out its season tickets for the first time in 27 years. sanders and drive for excellence inspired nike to produce buffaloes merchandise with shirts that say prime and according to university sales are up by just 800 percent. by the start of the season, he flipped the team roster upside down by welcoming 86 new student athletes. some of whom transferred from historically black colleges and universities. in his coaching debut, they pulled off a stunning win against tcu, the most-watched season opener and fox sports history.

the following week, the city of boulder brought in $18 million in revenue from the buffaloes first season on game meeting the nebraska corn huskers and last week the team smashing espn record by drawing in 9.3 million viewers during the double-overtime victory against colorado state making it the networks most-watched late- night college football game ever. sanders success did not come overnight. he coached at jackson state university where his sons also played and eventually followed their dad to play for the buffaloes. sanders is one of the most versatile athletes in sports history. the now 56-year-old is a retired nfl and mlb player, the only athlete to play both the super bowl and the world series. back in 1989, he became the first athlete to score a touchdown for the falcons and hit a home run for the yankees in the same week. but, the biggest impact so far best explained in an axial speech speech which is coach

the greatest quarterback in the history of the national football league. he was the all-american at florida state bride. all-state basketball player. he was a c seating on every level. you take into account his charisma, the way he articulates himself, his thoughts, et cetera. his inspirational impact that he has on the abundance of kids. you talk to some of you has been a friend of his for close to the last quarter-century. he and i are extremely close and we talk all the time. i know that when he was in this business, doing color commentator, looking for the nfl network, working for cbs, being and garnering interest from other networks throughout the years, one of the things that he religiously stipulated was that he was going to have time to coach his kids. i'm not talking what his kids meeting his two sons, but others as well. the guy loves coaching. he loves having an impact on the lives of young people.

colorado, for spring football, it was nationally televised. more people were interested in him and that program than they were interested in and the s.e.c. program which is clearly the best conference in college football as we speak with the rain defending two-time national champions. there was more interest in deion sanders and that program than there was in the national championship. when you hear people with black, you do not see too many black folks in colorado. i know because i've been there. >> you don't see too many of the 1-2 punch of having both a black head coach and a black quarterback because historically, that's two of the whitest decisions, i get that a coach is not a position. colorado is 21 points. does the fun and today? you are a guy that knows the x's and o's. talk to me about that. >> oregon is lethal . they put
