is now enroute to michigan, where he's soon going to be joining striking auto workers, joining them on the picket line. this is unprecedented. no historian can remember a time they have done this before. joining us is one of those historians, former director of the library, it's great to see you. what do make of this moment in presidential history that we're going to see today? >> this is a big deal. it is the first time that a sitting american president has ever walked a picket line. there's a reason for that. presidents have basically positioned themselves as mediators betweenth both labor and management. the democrats have tended to lean to the labor side and republicans to the management side, but the president under the law has a role as a mediator. but 2023 is a very different america. we are actually seeing the
8:53 am
beginning of a presidential election right now, 13 months before we actually go to vote. >> you think today is very significant with this? >> the fact that they are going to help in the same state talking to blue collar workers that's a presidential election. michigan is in play and the difference between 2016 when trump won and 2020 when he lost is a trump lost union voters in a big way. booid needs them to win. >> in 2009, biden and obama refused tos cross a picket line in order to head into a conference, a meeting that they had been planting to do so. they didn't join. but they department os cross a picket line, but they didn't join the strike back then. he is now. what is different now? what do you see? >> two things are different. one, joe biden is a bigger risk taker than barack obama. barack obama was a cautious president. barack obama when he was running for president, he said in
8:54 am
chicago when he went to a picket line as a senator, i'm going to go to a picket line when i'm the. he never did. 2012, he was reminded of this. he never did. number two, joe biden recognizes that our democracy is in crisis. he's going to break a norm. he's going to do something that presidents have never done. because there's no second chance for him. he needs michigan. and by the way, there aren't just striking workers in michigan. they are also in ohio and they are in missouri. biden is not going to win ohio and missouri, but he could help democrats in both states, particularly sherrod broin in ohio. >> he talked of himself as the most pro union president ever. do you think that track when is he looks through history? >> i by going to picket line, it makes him the most pro union president in history. harry truman is a pro union president, but he also
8:55 am
threatened to draft railway workers if they kept striking. one thing to keep in mind that's so very important, joe biden has a sense of history. joe biden remembers how jimmy carter lost the uaw. the uaw supported ted kennedy in 1980. and many uaw workers voted for reagan. joe biden knows that to be a second term president, he has to hold his base. and part of that is union america. that's what's happening today. >> the significant of endorsements, lately, is sometimes seen as overstated in modern presidential pcampaigns. but maybe not when we're talking about union support. maybe when we're not talking about union endorsement. what would it mean? >> the uaw did not endorse biden. it suspended.
8:56 am
but it didn't say it would be. but the question for the uaw is who else? biden is trying to say there's no one else. >> it's great to see you. we're going to be watching together soon when president biden is going to be landing in michigan and heading to the picket lines. it's great to see you. >> it was i felt this warm embrace. >> thank you all so much for joining us. there is a lot of news. stick around.
