1:01 am
where israeli troops are still fighting it's a mess on the ground inside of israel. two days after the large-scale attacks. >> israeli military keeping strikes on gaza and has completely upgrades the fatalities in hamas. >> hamas is claiming to have launched a major missile attack on the southern israeli city of ashkelon with israel saying an apartment building was hit, this comes as the militant group claims to now be holding 100. >> the death toll has claimed past 700 inside of israel. aleast 260 were killed at a music festival near the israel-gaza border. we're following the developments and elliott is joining us now. elliott, this is so much to stay on top of. but there has been discussion about the hostages.
1:02 am
we've been hearing the harrowing stories from family members on our air. how much will that impact israel's retaliation? >> it certainly complicates things. if they weren't hostages we've probably already seen incursion by the israelis to demonstrate in the gaza strip. because of the hostages, presumably because they're spread out across the strip, how do you deal with that, do you go in all guns blazing? never mind the fact there's the booby-trapped roads and other devices. further, israeli soldiers being taken captive in addition to the soldiers and civilians already being held by hamas. or do you stay back. and of course there is also, i suppose, a demand for response, a strong response from the israeli public which is completely shocked. this came out completely out of the blue. and just to put this into context. we're talk about a death toll
1:03 am
now, what, of 700 so far. and that could climb further. and this is already around about the number of fatalities that israel suffered during the six-day war in 19 except. it's about a quarter of the deaths that israel suffered in the yom kippur war 50 years almost to the day. everyone is completely shocked. they don't understand how this could have happened. also the element of deterrence. israel's armed forces were thought to be infallible, but certainly, if not the strongest in the region. and for something on this scale to have happened would be incredibly troubling. there are a huge number of questions to be answered. for now, though, israel very much focused on clearing up what's happening inside of israel with the attacks still ongoing and gun fights still ongoing and going more on the offensive within the gaza strip. >> and it's intelligence reasons, also, hasn't there?
1:04 am
and beyond that massive failure there, is it suggested that the intelligence know where is to go to help the hostages? >> i think israeli services they're not infallible. clearly, whether they took their eye all the ball or didn't have the intelligence. >> down read the intelligence? >> or they were duped. and reuters publishing a report, citing a hamas source, talking about how this was planned out for over the long term to try to dupe the israelis into thinking that economic benefits, more work permits, for example, for gazans to go work inside of israel, that would keep the peace. clearly, that was not the case. and that's not a mistake that israel will make in the future. but for now, they're just trying to deal with the unprecedented attack with the fallout. to try to get rid of militants, the ones inside of israel and gun fights still ongoing in a number of places, as i say.
1:05 am
and then really to go on the offensive then so, inside the gaza strip. but as we've been discussing that is annic credibly difficult undertaking in the best of tiles. and the fact that there are israeli hostages being held by militants inside the gaza strip just makes this even more complicated. >> and the population that hamas knows so well. elliott, thank you so much for joining us. one of the first attacks by gaza militants on saturday was a music festival in israel. a mass of gunman stormed the area, and some taken by point blank range. it's hard to watch, isn't it? dash cam video recovered from a car at a festival. shows this man pointing a machine gun at a person before leading them away. cnn's geo location confirms its identity. and this shows gunmen looting off the body of a person behind
1:06 am
a car. the militants shooting that person while still on the ground. we're obviously not airing that portion. >> cnn's clarissa ward visited the site and filed this report. and we caution you again, the aftermath of the images we're about to show you are, of course, graphic. >> reporter: what happened just off this quiet border road was a massacre. the bodies of the perpetrators still remain, while the fate of many victims is unknown. organizers of supernova music festival say that thousands of young revelers gathered to celebrate the end of the holidays. just after 6:00 a.m., hamas militants launched a bloody attack. so, we're just now on the approach to the area where the dance party was taking place. you can see there's vehicles all around here, that have been shot
1:07 am
up. we see the bodies of at least one, two hamas fighters. i think there are more down this way. many many of the victims spent hours in hiding, waiting to be rescued and calling their loved ones. many of them are still missing. many of them are dead. it's been very difficult to try to get a precise number. now, a volunteer group that handles human remains says at least 260 bodies have been found at the festival site. the government here took a bold step, releasing an imgage of scores of body bags in a tent where investigators were tasked with identifying them. so, you can see over here, the body of at least one other person, i don't think you want to get too close there. it's pretty graphic. active fighting continued along this stretch of the border throughout the day, israeli military forces poured in. so we're seeing a bunch of tanks being brought down this way.
1:08 am
you're also hearing a steady stream of booms, apparently rockets, landing in the distance in that direction. and certainly, a feeling that people are on high alert. we tried to push farther down that way. we were told in no uncertain terms we needed to turn around. clarissa ward, cnn, israel. >> joining us, the director of the international institute for counterterrorism at wrightman university. he's also a colonel in the israeli reserves. thank you so much, indeed, for joining us today. we are talking about the intelligence failures today. i realize the authorities are saying this isn't the right time to focus on that it's something to consider down the line but there are obviously people within israel who will we've been speaking to very concerned about how the country was completely caught off guard by this. what's your analysis of what happened and what we can draw from what was clearly a big failure? >> the issue at stake in that sense, me as an
1:09 am
israeli, not just sitting in tel aviv, i'm also israeli, i'm a mother, i have three children serving. my husband is serving. so we're in the middle of it, that's one of the reasons we find it very difficult to address what's going on. as somebody who comes as a professional and from the institute and as we look at it what we're talking about is a colossal failure but it's overwhelming a failure on two different levels of our own understanding of where hamas was going. i was listening to before what an another expert was talking about, we actually thought and we made an enormous mistake that hamas was becoming more -- oh, my god, i can't believe i even think of it -- humane among its own people as we've seen in the last 48 hours has jerked us out of our dream stage. that's what we believe, when people are humane, when you're going forward that it changes
1:10 am
where they're going to, most definitely, we were wrong. the second aspect in that sense was an overall one of deterrence, where you're think you're deterring a force and you're not. it's a combined strategic type of failure. one of the reasons that we're not willing to talk about it as of yet is we're still in it. we will still deter hamas. and we now have hezbollah breathing down our neck on the northern border. and we're still within an arena where hezbollah is telling everybody that they'll choose the time to join in. and that's not where we are, we're the state of israel, and our capabilities are there. one of the biggest challenges when you do this response right now in this overall horrific surprise attack it isn't over immediately. we're 48 hours in. it's going to take 72 hours, we will prevail. but in that time period, there are other forces here in the middle east, certainly, hezbollah, all of the other
1:11 am
backing beyond that may act and talk about the intelligence failure that will be food for them that we're not willing to give right now. >> the idf are necessarily being circumspect when it comes to a possible plans for a ground incursion, what do you think are and should be the priorities today and over the next few days? >> well, the idf first and foremost has to stabilize the situation inside israel. words i never thought i'd be saying on air to cnn. even if it existed we saw moors coming from the north, we need to stabilize. the next stage is some type of incursion into the ground into the gaza strip. as we understand, there are dozens, hundreds, nobody knows the exact number, of israeli citizens, children, 6-month-old baby, a 3-year-old. 85-year-old grandmother, soldiers of all sorts being held both by hamas and palestinian
1:12 am
islamic jihad, not that they've really put out any real pictures about how they're doing. what they're trying to do is taunt us in the most barbaric manner. and the barbaric actions of just killing endless families, not just at the party that you showed before. but in dozens of israeli communities inside israel, people waking. so in an incursion, it's going in, and both conquering and trying to eliminate as much of the terrorist group hamas that we can. you cannot do that just from the air. it means going in, going in is the worst time of military operation there. it's both 2.2 million people, and i acknowledge, there are people there, and within them are tens of thousands of murderous terrorists. who some of them came into israel over the last 48 hours, not all of them.
1:13 am
and in that sense, it's to go in, it's to clean them out, it's to try to get to the hostages, to do so in a way that we can continue tomorrow morning as -- as an idea, not tomorrow, figurative, as an exact sense. >> we appreciate that. thank you. >> thank you. israeli festivalgoers, soldiers and even children were captured on the attack. just ahead, we'll speak to a woman dense pretty looking for her daughter.
