we have been reporting this morning that they have targeted 100 hamas targets inside of gaza. in that one of the key operatives that was part of the seven of october attack has also been on of the targets of the attack and that's why
12:07 am
they're doing it. it is towards the ground defensive will see when it happens and itstill remains to be seen . but the message from the israeli side is that we are going ahead.it is not a de-escalation. we intend to go to gaza some point. the defense minister said they would have to see gaza inside and thus the language he wants his troops to here in terms of civilians in gaza. >> katie, thank you. as we mentioned president joe biden delivered an address thursday to explain why more military aid to the ukraine is in america's long-term interests. on friday the white house will send an urgent request to congress to continue to fund the war efforts in both countries.
12:08 am
the problem is the congress cannot act until they choose a new speaker and no one knows how long that will take. we have your report. >> president biden and an oval office address making the argument that the world is at aninflection point . democracies against dictators in the ukraine and israel are on the front lines of thiswar . he also made the argument that the us needs to continue investing to help ukraine and israel in the war. here is the president. >> american leadership is what holds the world together. american alliances are what keep us,american safe . american values are what makes other nations want to work with. we put that all at risk if we walk away from ukraine internal back on israel. it's just not worth it. >> biden called a smart investment that would pay off for generations and alluded to the fact that it would keep us troops out of conflict and kee
12:09 am
the conflicts from widening . it comes ahead of the white house asking congress for roughly $100 billion in new aid to fund the crisis. about $60 billion of that would help ukraine continue defending itself as russia's unprovoked invasion nears the two-year mark. and israel as the war with hamas interest the two week mark would see $10 billion from that package. but there remains to be seen what the path is for that package in congress where there is a leadership vacuum in the house of representatives and very clear consternation within fiscal hawks and progressive democrats about writing blank checks to many of these countries. the white house is confident there remains bipartisan support and there is rough agreement among many lawmakers that the us will end up on the right side of history. cnn white house. >> joining me now the director of the us and america's program
12:10 am
at chatham house. thank you for joining us today leslie. first of all it's interesting isn't the way biden has tied in israel budget to the ukraine budget. what chances do you think he hasbeen getting them through together ? >> you know that's right, it is very interesting. the case for support for israel is strong in congress and we know that the case for supportive aid to ukraine has come under attack from various parts of the congress. so tying them together is a risky political move but a powerful speech at a time when again american support if you look at the polling is actually quite strong still for supporting a ukraine so that the pushback is coming really more from congress. but that support for israel is very strong. the president was taking the risk at making a case for democracy and for america's
12:11 am
internationalist agenda at a time where we know that the much harder case to make. the president has link this to the 9/11attack and america's memory of trying to respond to terrorism . and of course we have domestic politics in what is going on in the house right now. it's very complicated with the attacks on israel were so extraordinarily terrible that there is a resonance with the american people. i expect that there will be support at a high level for israel. >> he referenced the utter chaos in amer politics and he tried to get pastthat. let's listen to that part of the speech where he references that . >> i know we have our divisions at home and we have to get past it. we can't let petty partisan politics get in the way of the responsibility of the great nation.
12:12 am
we cannot and will not let terrorists like hamas and tyrants like putin win. i refuse to let this happen in in moments like this we have to remember who we are. we are the united states of america. >> is interesting to see how he's not actually speaking, he's appealing directly to the american public that realistically we can't do anything until he deals with those domestic divisions he referenced. >> that's right. he is relying on public sentiment to really show a strong support. especially right now for israel. this is a president that has really been trying his entire presidency to speak into the importance of unity and we know from the numbers that the american public is a plea not unified and has not become more unified under this president but again you start to talk about terrorism and the hamas attacks in the scale and
12:13 am
brutality of the nature that we have witnessed. i think that appeal is very strong. the other real concern is that there are divisions. people are obviously, across the united states especially across america's college campuses very concerned about the humanitarian situation in cause a the palestinian people and this president is also trying to ensure that those divisions and that violence don't spell across america's streets. we are seeing that already the ability of the president to really talk about terrorism when he is talking about the attacks on israel's critical and again to link it to ukraine when a time where that war has been going on for a long time where americans are sensing that there isn't an endgame but still supporting it. you are right. he is using that vehicle to try to mobilize american sentiment,
12:14 am
the emotion of it all which is extorting air he and we all feel it. it took the pressure off the very unruly house of representatives right now . >> we haven't got many numbers on this because it's so new but do we have the latest polling on how he's handling thislatest crisis? it's all pretty positive . 42 percent approve of biden's handling of the terror attack on israel. that is actually quite a specific question, isn't it? a lot of sympathy with what the israelis went through and historic sympathy to what israel has gone through in the united states. going forward as with this ground invasion is also a huge amount of sympathy you just referenced among young people for palestinians and what they are going through. that's going to be the biggest challenges in it he met with the israel back while still supporting israel in the longer-term. >> that's right you just hit on the key crucial divide which is in some way generational
12:15 am
divide. the young people the deep commitment to israel isn't what it was or what it is in older generations. you expect that polling to be much stronger given america's long-standing ties to israel and a president of the united states that me a trip to a country that is under attack is quite extraordinary but we have all seen the tremendous suffering of the palestinians and that broader historical context has great resonance as it should. we all know that to bring any real solution into the region which now seems a much further, the husband pushed much further back and it will require some concerted effort with the us engagement to really invest in a two state solution and that some thing that is not been on the frontraider of this administration . i think people will begin to
12:16 am
see that dilemma play out across our television screens and that will make it a much more difficult context for this president. >> they use a much for all your expertise on this. >> thank you. >> israel expected to ground incursion into gaza and could be sooner. the leaders gathered on the border and more from that.and an excerpt from a military expert. plus in pakistan we have these demonstrations crowds taking to the streets to support palestinian people. there's a report from jordan so coming up. >> there are signs that israel

military and aid are expected to enter gaza from egypt, soon, against the scale of need is a token ahead of a possible grounding and may be all that gets through for a while. nick robinson, cnn israel. >> my next guest is the author of war transform the future of 21st century great competitions and conflicts. bryan is a retired major general in the australian army and he is with us. thanks so much for joining us. the latest that we got was that the politicians have given the israeli military the go-ahead for a ground invasion. what happens next? >> hopefully the same politicians who made the decisions have made the clear object to at the military level and they have given military command in which they can operate in gaza.
12:24 am
it cannot be a free-for-all. it should be a very precise and discriminative operation to achieve israel's strategic objectives. >> some military experts speculating that they are not going to go in, this is all posturing because it is such a huge challenge. what do you think about that? >> it is certainly a viable strategy israel, for sure. at the end of the day hamas took these attacks on 7 october these heinous attacks to prompt israel into doing exactly what many have speculated it is going to do. if israel did not go in it would really subvert that hamas claim and frankly the only people who win by a ground invasion is hamas. >> explain that a bit more, thesuggestion that hamas wants this to happen . >> there's no other reason
12:25 am
they would have undertaken these attacks on 7 october but to prompt a large-scale israeli grand inclusion into gaza. at the end of the day if israel was to do that hamas would know the totality of casualties and reinforce the position in gaza but also totally destroy israeli's relationship with its neighbors under the accord or the normalization of its relationship with saudi arabia. all of those things benefit. >> a ground invasion into gaza is a trap you think by hamas to attack the israelis? >> it certainly set up that way. israelis are pretty clever and they are good strategists and operational artists. at the end of the day there would be a certain number of civilian casualties which are unavoidable in this environmen . a densely packed urban environment and we cannot them out without civilian casualtie
12:26 am
. >> in terms of a regional escalation of violence, everyone is looking at a ground invasion, aren't they? we've also got these uprisings in terms of protests at least in countries like lebanon, and jordan. the last thing they want to see is a ground invasion because that will inflame the situation outside of israelwanted ? >> that's right. since 7 october we've seen protests in the wake of the hospital incident we have seen increased protests. that will only affect the stability of regional nations and jordan and countries like europe and egypt and ua i don't want to see that one. >> explained if you could mentality of the israeli military because obviously they have lived with this for decades. they have suffered many injustices and never there is an attack on a group of israelis the policy has always

been to go back and get retribution is in it? no matter how long it takes. so go ahead and explain a littlemore about the israeli psyche . >> for a long time israel has had a strategy that's described as mowing the grass. there is an incident they get a win and smacked thomas or whoeveris responsible in the pullout again .the israelis don't want to go back in to try to reoccupy gaza. they know it would be expensiv . and really wouldn't enable the rise of a more political entity in gaza to replace hamas. at the end of the day israel will probably have to rethink its policy towards the palestinians in gaza that have a long-term enduring and just solution. >> mick ryan in brisbane. thank you so much for joining ustonight . >> now, the pentagon says a

u.s. navy destroyer shot down multiple drones and missiles headed towards israel. a us official said they were launched by yemen ruffles on thursday to destroy a us carney in the red sea. according to the pentagon the us is still trying to find out for sure what their intended target was. >> information about these engagements is still being processed. we cannot say for certain what these missiles and drones were targeting but they were launched from yemen heading north along the red sea potentially towards targets in the israel. our defensive response was one that we would've taken for any similar threat in the region and we were able to do so for our interest personnel and partners. >> us officials say there's no casualties towards us officials and no civilians being injured either. israel's retaliation against

terrorists. >> hamas and putin represent different threats but they jettison common they both want to completely annihilate neighboring democracy completely annihilate it. you cannot and lenot let terrorists and hamas win. i refused to let that happen. we have to remember who we are. we are the united states of america. they united states of america. there's nothing, nothing beyond our capacity we do it together. >> meanwhile trump is hope to deliver humanitarian supplies from egypt but it will have to wait another day. a con by that was expected to cross the board today will likely wait until saturday. there are growing signs that israel's ground offensive might be close and they told troops along the border they will see gaza from the inside. meanwhile air nations are presenting a united front as their anger and outrage

continues to spread across the globe. we report from jordan. >> the people demand freedom. it is a decades-old rally cry but one that still resonates across the arab world. protests for solidarity for the palestinian people have ramped up across the middle east. the growing movement denouncing israel's continued aerial compartment of the besieged gaza strip which began in response to hamas attacks on october 7. but here in jordan, the plight of the palestinian people is an issue which lies at the very heif the country's identity or than 50 percent of the countries population is palestinian or of palestinian descent. the neighborhood just outside of hamann is one of these historic refugee camps th

12:36 am
we thought that our children are witnessing as well and it's been happening 75 years and right now it's happening all over again. >> protests in solidarity with palestinian people have grippe countries throughout the region . including iraq. lebanon, egypt, tanzania and libya. arab leaders have been vocal in their condemnation of israel's airstrikes on gaza. in the rapidly rising civilian death toll. but there is also mounting concern that this work to create a deeper rift to the arab world and the west. >> the growing perception on the street as they see this unequivocal support for israel in this war it is a growing perception that this is a waste of the muslim world andthat's a place we don't want to get to . >> is not just the arab world. the outrage and frustration
12:37 am
felt in the middle east is also mirrored in protest taking in other areas. from onon to washington dc with millions across the growth just like mohammed and his family the demand to israel's airstrikes and the end of the seas ongaza and and into the suffering of the palestinian people . cnn in jordan. >> and now we have a professor from kuwait university. thank you for joining us. this is a huge concern internationally about an escalation of this conflict. are we starting to see that in the protest, the demonstrations in countries like lebanon and jordan which have these huge palestinian populations? >> let me tell you the protests are not only in
12:38 am
palestinian sizable populations, places where palestinians exist they are from the atlantic ocean to the gulf. you see them in all of these places across the region and they are united in one demand ending the israeli bombardment and ending the israeli occupation. this is a no-brainer. these are people under occupation and they deserve a dignified life just like everyone else in the world. i have not seen such a scale of protests in the region since the arab strength and the interestingthing is , people from all walks of life are united. liberals, conservatives, old ones, young ones towards this common goal. if israel wants to live in peace in this region they have to adapt these messages and a two state solution should be front and center and there position continuing to dehumanize, and displaced
12:39 am
palestinians is not the answer. >> you mentioned this being a second arab spring and uprisings in countries for example like jordan to where there is a huge amount of concern for palestinians. they are concerned that the government perhaps should be showing support and it's a very delicate matter for many of these leaders. showing support for palestinians but also they want to have strong relations with israel. >> is a delicate matter indeed and let me tell you the governments around the region are picking up on the voices of the people. they are escalating their rhetoric and the more that israel can to -- continues in this assault the more it will be gaining a lot of traction to ensure that its discourse and policies alsochange towards israel . this is not something you can continue doing and it is not
12:40 am
about only the palestinian people. it is a humanitarian issue. it is beyond arabs, really. this is something that has been a rallying cry across the world and something that other countries in the us need to listen to. the global south cannotremain sidelined anymore . >> obviously israel suffered a massive attack and they are right to be able to defend themselves but you say a ground invasion would be the worst thing to happen at this point? >> a ground invasion can entail a regional war in which other parties can enter into the fray and that could be a big bad escalation for all parties involved. look, no blood should be shed and everyone should condemn the killing of palestinians and israelis. we need peace and security and prosperity for everyone involved and to try and continue in this chain of violence and cycle of violence
12:41 am
this will not end the story. hamas has done an atrocious job in attacking. let's not forget this is also a reaction to the daily humiliation that palestinians have been undergoing in occupation. they have nomeasure of moving about their daily life and that needs to be rectified as soon as possible . >> how concerned are you that america is losing its moral high ground by very much taking israel's side and expressing a huge concern about the humanitarian crisis unfolding within gaza. is it losing some of the alliances it might have with those arab countries which are more firmly cited with the palestinians here? >> the us is depleting whatever good standing it has in the region. if president biden came a few hours ago and said we need to remember who we are i think
12:42 am
there needs to be a very cautious approach to identifying who they are because the america we know in the region is one that cares about others. it is one that talks about a melting pot in its own country. it is one that cares about freedom of dignity and thus not being translated on the grounds and it comes to this conflict. being a one-sided party will not help advance the cause of the israeli nationalsecurity if that's what they are looking for . that will not help advance the us national security as well. >> thank you for joining us. now, the us has issued a worldwide alert advising americans to be extremely cautious amid protests over the israel hamas war. warning sites increase tensions in various locations and also points to demonstrations or violent actions with us citizens in diplomatic compounds. >> we are monitoring conditions around the world and
12:43 am
in the region. we take a number of factors into consideration when making that determination. it's not just anyone thing but everything we are watching around the world. >> it's been two weeks since deadly hamas attacks in israel and we are still seeing the stories of bravery and survival. at the kibbutz near gossett they showed the initial hamas attack. a volunteer security of force took hours exchanging intelligence backing large power. some that were defending their kibbutz described that morning on cnn. >> he was shot from his kitchen his alchemy. i shot from in between houses of people i've known all my life. he had to throw his kids over a balcony to another guys house. i mean, it is real. it's not just your common soldier and you go to do it ever youdo . it is like.
12:44 am
>> totally different. >> we are civilians. >> these are our homes. were not just soldiers. >> an israeli first respondent group they said they had recovered plans to attack the kibbutz from a fighter and posted it online. it showed in-depth knowledge of the kibbutz but also ofthe attacks that didn't go to plan . we are just hours away from a vote for the next house speaker and it does not look good for him jordan. the message explodes within the republican party. >> anger and frustration

report from capitol hill. >> jim jordan is not backing down despite the fact that he has been unable to win over some of his most ardent detractors. he is pushing ahead with the speakership bid. on friday he's planning to go to the floor for their time and then he's excited to hold a press conference where he's going to tryto rally support for speakership bid . on thursday he met with some of the holdouts who have been bowing to vote against him. he's trying to win them over and his goal right now is he knows he probably will not win on the first ballot on friday that he takes but he's hoping to show at least some type of progress. however after that meeting a number of the holdouts that they are not edging in their opposition. let's take at this and. >> i don't know if any minds changed in this guy refuses to lose. i find that to be good. at some point we have to move forward and we can't keep the country shut down. >> i don't think in the near future.

it will be a while. >> will see ifjim jordan is able to make progress. we are told there were some people who voted for jordan on the second ballot were now planning to vote against him on the third which would be very problematic for jim jordan and his speakership . in the meantime there are new concerns over member safety. there have been several republicans who voted against jim jordan who are now experiencing death threats. norton has announced the death threats and has no involvement in this outside pressure campaign but all of it grogoes the jor frustration and the gop they struggle to seek a new leader. >> a new legal blow for donald trump. one of his former lawyers cut a deal with muscular's. sidney powell pleaded on the eve of her trial pitch he is admitting her role in the breach of election systems in coffee county, georgia. she is also required to write
