watching us here in the united states, canada and all around the world, i am kim brunhuber. this hour on cnn newsroom, we are following developments in israel as the idea of launches raids in gaza and the humanitarian crisis worsens. but first, to the u.s., where there is a man hunt underway right now in maine after two mass shootings. law enforcement surrounded the suspect's last known address for hours thursday night as several communities remain on lockdown and residents are on edge. >> -- >> i don't feel safe. >> it has been more than 31 hours since police responded to active shooter calls at multiple locations in the town of lewiston, maine. we now know that a gunman killed at least 18 people and wounded 13 others, first at a bowling alley and then a restaurant. hours later authorities found

the suspect's car at a boat launched in a nearby town. with the suspect is still on the loose police are searching for this man, 40-year-old robert card. he is considered armed and dangerous. he charged with multiple counts of murder. schools will again be close on friday while the suspect is on the loose -- hundreds of local, state and federal agents are involved in the search in investigation -- the gun violence archive which tracks shooting says the rampage is the deadliest mass shooting of the year in the u.s.. more now on how the shootings unfolded from cnn's omar jimenez. >> a multi agency manhunt is underway for the suspect in two mass shootings in maine. >> 18 people -- 13 people injured in --

trisha, she works at the bowling alley and she had the night off. so, we had bowling leagues and we were a bowling. and we heard a big bang and my sister was bowling and i did not have the lane and i was. so we were a little bit apart there. and then we heard a loud noise. and i was not sure what it was until i heard another shot and i knew, and i seen it. i could not see her. and everybody was running. and i got caught, in people trampling and riding out, and we just kept running. and there were shots fired outside the building afterward. and we just kept running and running and running. and it was dark out. there was very little lighting there.

and we just ran to as far as i could go. so there was a bench and there was some trees. and a bunch of us who are just hiding behind the trees. wondering what was going on. and when the cops showed up, it was all kinds of cops, tons and tons of cops and guns. and -- we were coming out of the woods. and we were down telling the cops, don't shoot. and they were telling us to keep walking and walking and i kept asking where is my sister. she's with my aunt. [crying] and i just wanted to be with my sister. >> at least one person who was treated for gunshot wound has been released from hospital. as we heard there, family and friends of the mask are trying

to process the tragedy while mourning the loss of their loved. once cnn's jason carroll has some of the victims stories. >> the city did not deserve this terrible assault on its citizens, on its peace of mind, on its sense of security. no city does. no state and no people. the >> magnitude of what happened last night coming into focus as authorities remove the bodies of some of those who perished in the shooting at the schemengees varnville bar and grill restaurant. police say of those killed, leroy walker's son joseph. these said his son died when he tried to stop the shooter. >> my son's manager of the bar and everyone else everything else, and he picked up on a butcher knife m1 after the gunman to try and stop him from killing other people. that's when he shot my son to death. trying to save some more lives that he ended up losing his

life. 40-year-old brian macfarlane also identified as one of the victims. his sister says he was deaf. he was there for a regular wednesday night gathering of members of the deaf community and a corn whole tournament. his sister, who is also deaf, says their losses deeply felt from her family and the community. >> i want people to know has imf community, that we have lost four community members, not only just brian but we have lost three other friends as well from this tragic incident and this community. it is a huge loss. >> minutes away from the bar, more victims and more tragedy. police say seven were killed at just in time recreation center, a bowling alley in lewiston, including 53 year old tristan asked tricia asselin -- she told cnn she wasn't going to run, she was going to.

just in time recreation released a statement which summed up the feelings of many in the community. there are no words to fix this or make it better. we are praying for everyone who has been affected by this horrific tragedy. we love you all and hold you close in our hearts. an unidentified employee of bates college was one of 13 people injured during the match shootings in a statement the baits president says the employees expected to make a full recovery, adding, no matter how many times something like this happens i find myself at a loss for words. and this time it happens so close to home. some of the injured are being treated at central maine health care hospital in lewiston. >> this is a dark day for me. i know it is hard for us to think about healing when our hearts are broken. but i want every person in maine to know that we will heal -- >> jason carroll, cnn --

scores of senior hamas leaders have been killed since -- 1400 people in southern israel and the idf said an airstrike on thursday killed a senior hamas leader who is involved in planning the attacks. all right, let's turn now to cnn's jim bittermann tracking the story for us live from paris. so, jim, first to us up to speed on the latest. >> i think we heard it right there, look, from the defense authorities in israel that they are basically are carrying out these-limited raids into gaza to eliminate terrorists but also to stop on the ground a bit for the major invasion read are expecting and saying is going to follow and basically they are trying to get rid of any kind of explosive devices that they might be left behind, and -- to see about surveillance capabilities of hamas and getting rid of that kind of thing. , so there is no --

hamas numbers. as the raid it begins. , so there are going to be these limited kinds of actions for a while. but we don't know exactly how long and all of it, of, course is going up to what everybody expects has their major invasion of all the equipment and out of there. >> yeah, exactly, and in the meantime jim intensive blue bad actively magic efforts are ongoing including some by the french president although he does not seem to have achieved his goals. what more can tell? us >> yes, i think that's exactly right and he did not seem to get much traction. he just had a world wind track in the release, saying leaders and palestinian territories and jordan, and egypt and he is basically pitching a kind of a multi lateral coalition of nations to fight terrorism along the order of a coalition that was put together to fight i.s.i.s.. that coalition included some arab countries, the arab league, for example committed to the

teenager 35 years ago. he has responded to countless scenes of horror and protest scenes of terrorism. nothing could have prepared him for what he saw in the aftermath of october 7th. >> i've been through the worst bomb attacks and -- all these attacks together for 35 years and all the gruesome stuff i saw, it's nothing compared to one day of october 7th the day i saw -- i never imagined in my life i would never see. i never imagined i could see a -- holocaust in the museum. in black and white. i saw it in color. and so people, who have been torn apart to pieces. they killed, they literally wanted to torch them and humiliate their body. things that i saw that i will never ever forget. i'm still smelling the smell of a flesh, of the burn flesh. a lot of the victims are burnt.

and like that. like i said -- i'm shocked. i'm shocked. >> telling residents in the nearby areas to stay inside and lock their doors. law enforcement experts say card's training and outdoor experience are making it more difficult to locate him. retired fbi special agent bobby -- to cohen said the train in -- maine company is a task of tracking down and he -- spoke earlier with my colleague paula newton about the challenges facing long forsman. >> i'm somewhat puzzled by that question sometimes because it takes a long time to catch somebody. the police don't have, particularly, in an area like this that is more rural than say new york city or los angeles, people have -- is a lot of room and there's a lot of rugged terrain in different areas that they can just disappear into and i guess sometimes -- art does imitate life. but we don't have the ability

to track him everywhere all at the time. and i'm sure luis student doesn't have any large police department and so he did this, he planned it, he drove for one place to another, and he disappeared into the night. it's not unusual to go this long in this kind of the area and not come up with somebody who wants to stay hidden. and it will depend on how long he was planning this. did he liquidated? have cash in supply stash somewhere? water, food, things like that? that is going to come to light in the coming days but right now they have to be focused on where he is and taking him into custody or neutralizing him before he hurts anyone else. >> and i take your point. he this early was plant that he has some expertise. i want to tap into two x hubert east areas of your expertise and what is the psychology of a person who does not surrender. in some of the situations we have seen, most times, in fact that they immediately commit suicide. what could be motivating him,

do you think, in the situation? >> you are right. most of these times they either and in suicide at the scene or at least suicide by cop where they shoot out, shootout with the police know they are probably going to get killed. it is hard to say. because you are dealing with a very irrational person that is in the midst of a psychotic break with reality. so, it is very hard to say, not knowing him. i am hoping that they -- the people that treated him, we heard he was treated for some mental health issues recently. he was institutionalized for a couple of weeks over the summer. and -- those doctors are probably the ones that have the biggest insight into his mindset of what he is doing and what he wants to accomplish with this thing. but it is hard for a layman like us, not medical professional, psychological professionals, to really get inside his mind, to know what he is thinking. because every -- take these kinds of actions.

>> law enforcement officials are expected to wear turn on friday, to robert card's last night address in bowdoin, maine. authorities are also digging into his -- cnn's pamela brown has. more >> storms are federal and local officers converge as the man hunt for robert card intensifies. >> he's armed and dangerous. >> his back on giving clues about the shooting that left at least 18 dead and more than a dozen injured. his army records show the 40 year old was a petroleum supply specialist in the reserves. but, he never served in combat. a former army reservist who served with card telling cnn he is skilled, an outdoorsman who is one of the best shooters in his unit. while he was training in upstate new york over the summer, card reported hearing voices -- a gwendolen forsman sources. the national guard saying he was, quote, behaving erratically, and he was transported to a hospital of the u.s. military academy for

medical evaluation, his family telling cnn that he did not have a long history of mental health issues, quote, a q this is something that was an acute episode. this is not who he is, his sister and law says, quote, this is a good family. on his twitter page, card liked right wing posts including by tucker carlson, don trump jr., members of congo and multiple posts criticizing biden. his social media also shows photos of him fishing. the coast guard is also part of the search. card's vehicle was left in a boat ramp near the shooting scene. a public record showed he owned a boat. according to another former soldier who served with card, he had extensive training, including land navigation, quote, so he would be very comfortable in the woods. the shooting was in lewiston, card's most recent address is in a rule address in a close town called bowdoin, according to records.

we shall show that his family on a number of properties nearby. law enforcement sources say card recently split up with longtime girlfriend, and they are pursuing the theory that he allegedly targeted the bowling alley and bar because he used to go there with her and was supposed to be at the bar that night. >> based on our investigation, we believe this is someone who should not be approached. >> card's brother telling cnn they're trying to reach him, urging him to surrender, quote, we have helped law enforcement anyway possible, and the police have been giving anything that we can offer to facilitate their efforts. >> the brother the suspect also telling me this is many people's worst nightmare. indeed, it is. and one of the big authentic questions is, why robert card was able to leave that mental health clinic after expressing thoughts of wanting to harm fellow soldiers and able to gain access again to his legally possess multiple weapons and we know that main does not have a red flag law. which allows family members to petition the court to have weapons taken away from another

family member in crisis. pamela brown, cnn, washington. >> the congressman from maine has flipped his position on the assault weapons ban one day after the mass shooting there. democratic representative jared golden says he now supports the ban. golden is from lewiston, where the mass shooting occurred and says he feels like he let his community down. here he is. >> the time has now come for me to take responsibility for this failure, which is why, i now call in the united states congress to -- the sikh perpetrator of this mass killing, my hometown. the rampage in maine is now the deadly shooting in the united states this year. the gun violence archive is seeing more than 500 mass shootings so far this year over the agency defines mass shooting of one where least four people are -- now while the u.s. has a whole sees hundreds of incidents of gun violence, this is unusual

>> now, the latest in israel's war with hamas. israel says it has no intention of stopping ground incursions into gaza, like that when you see here. on thursday, the idf released a video of its raid into northern gaza, saying its back into isra. meanwhile, president joe biden says he is not buying the that tolls released by gaza's health ministry, but he also acknowledge that innocent civilians are being killed. the ministry, which is controlled by hamas, maybe released thousands of names of people -- deaths have been reportedly confirmed. and cnn can't independently verify the death toll in gaza. now, in response to the heightened tensions across the middle east, u.s. military has and that's the point about 900 additional troops to the region. the pentagon was quick to dispel concerns that those troops might be heading into a war zone. listen to this. >> well i won't talk specific at pointed locations for these forces, i can confirm that they are not going to israel and that, again, they are intended

to support regional deterrence efforts and further bolster u.s. force protection capabilities. >> u.s. intelligence is deeply concerned that iranian-backed militias may be planning attacks against american forces in the middle east. the u.s. has already down to considerable lengths to show up its defensive posture by appointing to carry groups, fighter jets and -- highly advanced anti missile systems. the u.s. says it has conducted airstrikes against facilities in eastern syria that are linked to iran. it's not clear if there were any casualties. the strikes followed a series of attacks on u.s. forces in the region, in which washington city's tehran wasn't involved. cnn's oren liebermann has details. >> he was carried out air strikes in eastern syria against two facilities used by iran's islamic revolutionary guard corps, and affiliated groups, as -- attacks we've seen over the course of the past week and a half or so, against u.s. forces in iraq and syria. the pentagon says two f-16 fighter jets use of precision

guided munitions to target these facilities and ammo storage facility and a weapon storage facility. officials say the facilities were used and assisted in a series of attacks we have since seen in october -- the pentagon says we've seen 19 attacks, drone attacks and rocket attacks in u.s. and -- resulting in more then -- and when u.s. civilian contractor was killed as a result of a false alarm, because of a belief of another one of these attacks. given the situation, the u.s. felt it had to respond. with the u.s. and event secretary lloyd austin were very clear -- describing these as self-defense strikes that were narrowly targeted to protect u.s. forces and also sent a message that there would be more strikes if the attacks on u.s. forces continue. the -- statement here. first, attributing these to iran, including this on iran. iran wants to hide its hand, and its -- role in these attacks against the forces. we will not let them. the attacks by iran's proxies against u.s. forces continue, we will not hesitate to take

further necessary measures to protect our people. then, these narrowly tailored strikes in self-defense were intended solely to protect and defend u.s. personnel in iraq and syria. we have already seen the u.s. bolster its force presence in the region because of a worry of escalation -- iran proxies, which would be hezbollah and -- iraq and syria, the u.s. deploying and in the process of applying -- including if that air defense battery and -- air defense systems. that is on top of everything we have already seen last week between two carrier strikes groups and -- all is a warning to iran that -- the question now, of course, these airstrikes and these targets on facilities used by iran's irgc affiliated groups -- that get the message and has deterrence going to restore or does this continue the u.s. trying very hard to make sure the conflict in gaza does not spread to the wider region, even as we have seen anti-u.s. and anti israel protests across the middle east.

our guest, the policy, advocacy and communications manager for oxfam based in iraq. thank you so much for being here with us. i want to start with what we just saw there. certainly, limited options for hospitals trying to stay open right now in gaza. >> yeah, the devastating images of the hospital has been crowded and i am not able to before -- the capacities really devastating. we are seeing that doctors are struggling with the number of high injuries coming into the hospitals, the needed operations that are taking place in all is dependent on electricity, on fuel and access to medical equipment and supplies. we have to remember that -- displaced who have lost their houses, and this is where the situation is getting worse and because they have to -- make sure that they use the resources and the situation came to the point that i don't think gaza have seen before. and this is something that needs immediate intervention, otherwise innocent lives will continue to be lost, for

injuries for the lack of medical attention. >> the idf says this is all sort of a smokescreen by hamas, that hamas actually has lots of fuel. there is just kind of hiding. it what do you say to that? >> there is no way that we cannot say that fuel is not -- as much as before, the cycle of conflict. fuel is one of the things that used to come into gaza before the cycle. it was needed, and it was something that gaza had -- on from the international community support. so, we are talking about something that used to go inside gaza before the cycle. they asked to stay in place. the u.n. agencies that are there to monitor the situation and make sure that fuel is going to wear should be going, which is for civilian purposes. and this is why the messages are coming strongly he's, the needs are they are. and fuel is needed to make sure to treat it. it's a two shuns are there to monitor the situation. >> beyond the fuel situation, what is the status from most in gaza right now? >> maybe i can start with the

fact that many people in gaza are emotionally still scared, frightened, and emotionally tired, even. and physically tired. they're struggling every day to stay and -- provide for their own needs. the -- displacement is something that is continuous-ing continuing. and -- and families are hosting each other. every day we see more families losing their houses and families are struggling to provide food and water for their needs. now -- children, people are always asking when this is going to be ending. is there going to be any cease-fire? and the answer is still not clear yet for them. they day-by-day need to make sure there is bread and access to clean water. these are commodities that are moving out from the market. and it's -- more than before. and for gaza situation -- and to this extent of full meaning is something that we have doing now more than before. >> laila barhoum, as i mentioned, in some reports, some trucks carrying aid have made it through the border

because. it is not making any difference right now? >> and the access to it is very much needed. but we are talking about a situation where gaza had more than 80% of its population being dependent on aid even before this time, period of conflict. what we are seeing now is the almost 2% of -- before the cycle of conflict, gaza used to be at least 100 trucks of aid and food and water. and now we are receiving seeing a drop in the ocean which is not going to much cover the needs. we are now talking about the proper population who are needed from, again, assistant there needs, and now we are also talking about the fact that there is not sustainable. it is not fixed. it needs to be accurate. but also in these to be regular. it needs to be protection for citizens to be able to access this aid. this is not enough. it was not enough before. it's not enough now. >> many people in gaza have more immediate fears. things like being possibly killed by an idf strike, for example. but there are longer term fears as well.

lack of clean water. many aid agencies, like yours, are worrying warning of a growing public health crisis. dehydration, disease and so on. >> yeah, indeed. there are -- contributing to a health crisis here. we are talking about lack of freedom -- sewage is not treated. it's been dumped untreated in the water and the sea. we talk about lack of access to clean water for hygiene. and already families in schools families and -- talking about the fact that they cannot use water for fertilizing purposes. a number of waterborne disease might be -- spreading -- might be a concern for families. and because they need to -- you want visa for a hygiene, of course, the priority will always be for surviving. and now we are talking about wastewater treatment plans and not able to function but water is not pumped out. this is a whole collapse of the whole. system and -- there is no way for people to receive services like before. the focus now is staying alive. but also staying not to be
