politico says that nikki haley won. the washington post says that nikki haley lost. so how to assess the republican presidential debate and the ones that had references to scum and five-inch heels. >> and actors are going back to work, and a deal has been reached after a strike that brought to industry to a halt. and when your favorite shows could finally be out of reruns. and the fa, and the air traffic controllers are in the hot seat testifying before congress about the string of dangerous calls across the country at airports. with john berman and sara sidner, i'm kate bolduan. this is cnn "news central."
7:03 am
you're just scum. a phrase that was never spokenen the lincoln-douglas debates or any debate for that matter, and now it is time to assess how the presidential race has changed after a candidate not named donald trump has occurred in the gop after the candidates went after each ther. >> do you want dick cheney in three-inch heels. >> mr. vivek ramaswamy, thank you. >> and they are five-inch. >> and she made fun of me aton tiktok with her daughter and so -- >> leave my daughter out of it. >> and so, that is if -- >> you are just scum. >> and so there it is.
7:04 am
and steve in miami, and so this is a moment that it was a moment for nikki haley or vivek ramaswamy to emerge as a clear frontrunner, and what did you see? >> well, nikki haley and vivek ramaswamy had some of the most memorable exchanges, but they are two of the frontrunners to the trump alternatives and clashes as well, and they are looking at how they go into january, and for example, desantis raised concerns about this chinese company of what haley recruited to her home state when she was gov now. listen to this exchange. >> she welcomed them into south carolina, gave them land near a military base, wrote the chinese ambassador a love letter of what
7:05 am
a great friend they were and this is the number one way to do. >> yes, i brought a fiberglass letter to south carolina five years ago, but you the chair of the economic agency as of last agency said that florida is the ideal place for chinese businesses as of last week. >> so i should point out that last week that chinese deal was the subject of an advertise that a pro desantis superpac is running as desantis allies are trying to blunt some of haley's momentum that she has had in the homestretch. haley on the other hand went after desantis' record in the environment saying that there are inconsistencies there. >> on the energy side, it cracks me up that ron continues to do. this he has opposed fracking. he has opposed drilling, and the last time he said it was not true, and everybody found out that it was true, and he opposed
7:06 am
it before the florida voters voted on it, and praised by the sierra club, and trying to make up for it and act like you were not a liberal when it comes to the environment, and you were and you always have been. >> we are absolutely going to frac, but i disagree with nikki haley, it is not a good idea to drill in the florida everglades and most floridians agree with me. >> that is taste of the back and forth that you can expect in the final weeks of the race. and our own daniel dale has comments on the race, and you find those on cnn.com. >> yes, danielle dale had a busy evening. and donald trump rallying the supporters a few miles away trying to move the spotlight to where he is, and he dismissed the idea that he is afraid to
7:07 am
debate them. >> and seeing these guys, they are not watchable. somebody said, one of the dumber ones, oh, he does not have the courage to stand up. well, listen. i am standing in front of tens of thousands of people right now, and it is on television. that is a hell of a lot harder to do than a debate. >> there you go. and we are joined from washington, d.c., this morning from elena, and what was the message last night besides going after his opponents? >> well, yeah, sara, donald trump was escalating his attacks and mockery of the primary process last night by bringing this rally on the doorstep of that third republican debate. he has really faced no blowback so far by skipping the first two debates and holding counter programming. he has even up staged them last
7:08 am
night with that massive rally in hialeah. hialeah is a 96% hispanic community and focusing on cuban americans, and he compared the biden administration to the cuban regime, and big part of that was playing on the fears of immigration. at one point he said he would track down and deport the resident aliens who participated in recent attacks a at the white house. pay attention. >> and to all of the resident aliens who joined in the protests and became very violent and started to destroying our capitol and many other places, we put you on notice, come 2025, we will find you and we will deport you. >> so, sara, very amped up rhetoric from donald trump, and as part of that he proposed ta
7:09 am
travel ban on the muslim countries that is ramped up following war in israel, and the big picture that i wanted to point out about the debates, he has no plans to participating in any of them, and the team has said that he has no plans of attending fourth debate which is announced to be held in tuscaloosa, alabama, and this is all part of the strategy to look like he is bypassing the challengers and setting up the general election rematch with joe biden. >> and you mentioned high ya lel -- hialeah, and there is a huge number of latina population, but they are not a mono lith just like cuban american voters and others. >> and now, we are joined by the former campaign manager for marco rubio, and s.e. cupp, and
7:10 am
we are back again, my friends. terry, after the second debate after the post combo, you described the second debate as a goat rodeo, and now, after the third debate, any improvement above goat rodeo status? >> yes, they all made improvement, and it is much more substantive and all of them needed to do what they needed do, and some of them unloaded the opposition research documents on the campaign stage. >> mod rays or the were better. >> there was no fighting or that, but did it matter? none of them talked about the elephant who was not in the room holding rally down the street. when he is like 44-point lead in the latest cnn poll in the primary, what are you doing on the stage? >> one thing they are doing on the stage is going to place of taking on and talking about the other candidate's children. s.e., this is a moment that stuck out to you. i want to play this just to
7:11 am
remind everyone what we saw. >> in last debate she made fun of me for joining tiktok while her own daughter was using app for a long time, so take care of your family first while preaching -- >> leave my family out of your voice. >> the next generation of americans are using, and that is the point. the supporters are propping her up, and this is the truth. >> you are just scum. >> s.e., what did that reveal other than it gets my hair up in hearing it. >> yeah, we are moms, and that unleashed the mama in all of us. i mean, i would have been across that debate stage. i mean, you don't bring up children, and especially told as a woman, take care of your family first, and really, really low. and the comment about her heels really low and gross. and nikki haley chose a word i would not use, but i would not blame her to describe him, and
7:12 am
what vivek ramaswamy last night was not debating, but he turned that into a roast, and i don't think that anyone takes very seriously anyone who would turn america into his insult comedy club. >> yeah, and this stuck out to you. what is the motivation there? he clearly planned to say this, and something in the op poe re -- oppo research, but would ju advised? >> never attack the family, and these are just auditioning for the next tv contract, but i don't know if it is something that went awry, but it did not score him point, and only helped nikki. >> okay. two big topics and your take on how they talked about abortion and trump, and terry, the next one. >> trump? >> okay. the trump mashup. >> i'll say this about donald trump, anybody who is going to be spending the next year and
7:13 am
half in their life focusing on keeping themselves out of jail and courtrooms cannot lead this party or country. >> i can talk about president trump, and i can tell you that he was the right president at the right time, but don't i think that he is the right president now. >> he said this republicans would get tired of winning, but last night, i am e sick of republicans are losing. >> it felt to me that they did not take your advice from the last round, and they have to draw blood and go after him, and what did they do? >> well, the stage is getting smaller and keep getting smaller, and several of the people around the stage last night will not be on the next debate stage, and as trump runs away with it. he is running a smart campaign and doing the right thing, and walking away with the nomination, and they have to do something to change the trajectory. >> they have not in three debates, and it is clear that it sounds like those were three sound bites in the two prior. s.e., how they talked about abortion last night, and i have to get your take.
7:14 am
listen. >> when we are looking at, this there are some states going more on the pro life side, i welcome that, and some going more on the pro choice life, and this is not the case, but the people decided. >> we need a 15-week federal limit and three of four americans aggree with the 15-week limit. >> you have to do a better job with the referendum, and of all of the things that happened with the pro life cause, they have been caught flat footed on the referenda and they have been losing. >> so, s.e., some of the answers were prepped way before tuesday's election and not adjusted after tuesday's lek s -- election and why? >> well, the moderators did a great job and i would have started with it given with what happened tuesday nichlgt it is clearly something that republicans, any one of them are going to have to contend with. and republicans seemingly
7:15 am
wanting to die on this hill are in fact dying. they are losing elections over and over and again, because abortion is saving democrats from crime, border crisis, and democrats are using it effective, and i don't think that any of the candidates had to take it on, and talk about whether they have learned lessons or how they would go on to win in a general election when the majority of the country including many of the republican voters are not with the far right on this issue. >> i have really enjoyed our conversations post debate. let's keep it going. thank you, s.e. and terrence. john? breaking overnight, they have a new deal and maybe you will have new shows eventually. the sag-aftra reached a deal with the studios after 118 days on the picket line. oliver darcy is with us. what are the details, oliver? >> john, there is finally peace
7:16 am
in hollywood after many, many months and after unprecedented really disruption in hollywood. finally, there is peace. the actors union is making a deal with the studios an announcing that to the member last night. we don't have the full terms of the deal yet, john, and we should get more detail tomorrow as the official ratification process begin, but we are getting some glimpses of what the deal includes, and it is ground-breaking protections of the artificial intelligence and the statement that the union is going on the put out which offers some insight into what they got, and in a contract valued at over 1 billion, we have achieved a dealf extraordinary scope of compensation that includes the members of threat of a.i. and establishes a streaming participation bonus, and streaming is is a big issue as the actors went into the negotiations, and it is not just a union saying they got big win,
7:17 am
and ted serranda announced over the weekend we didn't just come toward you, we came all of the way to you. so you can see that the actors definitely secured some key victories when negotiating with the studios. john, this deal could not have come soon enough, because they needed a deal last week to get production back up and running if they wanted to bring back the shows that everyone wants to see in january, and if you want to see the summer moves next year, the production as to be up and running and now hollywood is quickly focused on getting people back to work, and getting the hum of the hollywood engine back roaring so they can bring back the shows and movies that everyone loves. >> new life in the labor movement. thank you, oliver darcy for that. and next hour, we will speak with fran drescher of course, the star of "spinal tap" and
7:18 am
president of the sag-aftra union. >> you cannot forget fran drescher, because she is going to be on. thank you. and now, we are going live to tel aviv for the latest in the besieged gaza strip, and the negotiations free more hostages that are held by hamas. and now, a long list of clients that included elected officials and military officers and what we are learning about at the justice department's investigation and arrests in that case. that is ahead.
7:23 am
hostage negotiations are ramping up with new urgency in qatar. an official confirms that bill burns met with the head of isra israel's masad about the hostages that were taken in the october 7th attack. and now, sources are pointing around discussions around several proposals to get a significant number of hostages released. jeremy diamond is standing by in tel aviv with more. what more are you learning, jeremy, because they are being very careful to talk about the details of the negotiations for obvious reasons. >> yeah, no doubt about it, kate. these talks are extremely fragile, and we have been watching as these qatar-mediated negotiations have been going on and watched potential deals come about and potential talks collapse. so there is a psyche toll the
7:24 am
negotne goesch -- is a cycle to the negotiations come about, and they have been sitting down today in doha to talk about the proposals on the table, and that is according to the diplomatic officials around the table, and this is an exchange for three-day pause of hostility and humanitarian aid into gaza, and hamas to exchange for hostage and a list of the hostages they are holding. this is one of the potential deals being discussed for the officials involving cia director and the head of the israel's intelligence agency and qatar's minister, but what we should be clear about is that the talks are so fragile and complex, and we have watched before as we have seen to be close to a deal and those talks have collapsed again. but what this does appear to be is an effort to get close to israel's red line which is no
7:25 am
pause in hostilities unless a sig nificant amount of has tajs a -- hostages are released, and what we have learned over the last few years that israeli forces have encircled gaza, and working in gaza city, and working to destroy additional tunnels, and they have destroyed 130 tunnels thus far, and amid all of this as the rate in gaza has deteriorated particularly in northern gaza which is the ground operation in the gaza strip. the hospitals are running out of hospital supplies and fuel to keep the generators going, and to continue to provide services, and number of hospitals are shutting down. amid all of this, tens of millions of palestinians are
7:26 am
leaving northern gaza to facilitate a corridor for palestinians to head south. but it is a sad situation for the palestinian civilians that are caught in the middle of all of, this kate. >> and the families of all of this hostages holding their breath to hope they get their family out some time soon. thank you, jeremy. john? >> we are joined by cnn military analyst retired general marks. we should note this is the 35th day in captivity and despite this pause, with them operating gaza city surrounded, what is a military definition of a pause? >> well, there is not a tactical military term of pause. you are either on the offensive or you are transitioning to the defensive. so you are transitioning between
7:27 am
the two types of capabilities. there are other type of military operations, but there is not a pause. so a pause connotes that the israeli forces in gaza which are on the offensive and going after the hamas strongholds and getting into the tunnels and neutralizing the tunnels and trying to find the hostages and going after the hamas leadership, and they have to transition to the defensive. so when you do that, the coordination is looking different which puts the forces at risk. the israelis know that clearly and they have stated all along that the pause is not an option for them going forward and that going to put them at enhanced risk and they lose the momentum that they have achieved so far, and the momentum is that if there is leverage and humanitarian assistance as the leverage that can be done
7:28 am
simultaneous with the pause with hamas. >> so what we have seen with the idea of the last few days of the tanks and other things operating there, they don't have to stop, but they have to fundamentally change what they are doing there. >> exactly correct. you become exposed. when you are on the offensive, you own the momentum. the advantage is to clearly to the defensive positions. hamas has been there for a while, and this is a home game for them, but the israelis are disrupting what they have put in place. so if they, the israelis transition, they have to dig in, and you have to go deeper in, and improve communication, and you are a target that is not moving and you are exposed and the hamas snipers and movement that has not been restricted to date, and there are still tunnels being use and hamas can maneuver and maneuver on the
7:29 am
battlefield and they can increase their attack against the israelis. >> we have seen some diagrams provided by the idf and how complicated it is to move around and within them. thank you, spider marks. tell me if you have heard this, days away from a potential government shutdown. congress is trying to avert this for a second time in as many months. we will have much more ahead. plus, brother and son subpoenaed by the house committee as it is searching for proof of an impeachable offense. all of that is ahead.
7:34 am
all right. eight days is how long congress has to get the act together and come up with a plan to avoid a government shutdown. a 17th deadline marks the test for new house speaker mike johnson who reportedly met with the top republican on the senate appropriations committee, but as things are standing at the moment, a deal is not close. let's bring in cnn analyst jackie kucinich who is the washington bureau chief for "boston globe." thank you for being here, jackie. start with the obvious question, why do the american people have
7:35 am
to keep going through this, and this is one of congress' number one jobs to keep the government running, and why are we here again? >> well, it has a lot to do with the divided government and not with the house and senate, but within the house republican senate, and they have trouble getting the appropriations bills passed on the house floor, and perhaps a financial services one being pulled today. so while the speaker johnson is new, and believe it or not, he has been here two week, and this is two weeks ago, and he still has not found his footing here, and we are not sure what the plan is going to be to keep the government funded as you said in eight days. >> yeah, it is hard for people to wrap their head around back here now a month after going through this before, and i do want to talk to you about what we heard from chris coons this morning as we had a bill proposed by the democrats which has funding for israel, funding for ukraine, funding for trying
7:36 am
to deal with the issues at the southern border, and he says, look, you need to pass this, because we won't break it out or remove for example ukraine funding from our bill. do you think that is going to fly here? >> it is going to be incredibly difficult for speaker johnson to get anything beyond israel, funding for israel past that house in congress to buy-in, and that is what hurt kevin mccarthy this willingness to compromise and work at times with the democrats if he needed to get things done, and particularly talking about the debt ceiling. it is one of the reasons that he is no longer the speaker of the house. ukraine is a hard-line for a lot of the republicans, anded repu -- and the republican party. they are looking at drops of why are we doing this? so he has tried to force the senate to pass israel funding by
7:37 am
defunding the irs, and this is dead on arrival, and what the next move is, we will have to wait and see, sara. that is where we are at right now in washington, d.c. >> you are often hearing people saying that congress has a low approval rating in general, and you are hearing people say congress needs to get it together, but at this point in time, it doesn't matter the party that you are in, and the republicans are having the hardest time to get it together amongst themselves, correct? >> very true. and you know, we have seen it live and in person in the speaker debates with the leaderless republican party for some time. and now, speaker johnson has gotten a little bit of grace, but his grace period is quickly ending, and we always knew it would end around now, because of this november 17th date. it really just does not seem like the initial plan trying to get appropriations bill passed one by one is going to fly. i mean, there are some
7:38 am
republicans who just want to go to conference and just start talking to the senate. maybe that is where they will end up, but time is running short, sara. you are right, there are a lot of american people who don't want to be dealing or worrying about this over the holidays which is growing ever closer. >> yeah, that is the thing. everybody is worrying about the budgets personally, and they are taking care of it, around the government is doing same thing. thank you, jackie kucinich, and i love your shirt, the butterflies. >> thank you, sara. and a stunning bust of what the justice department is calling a high end brothel network that included high end officials as clients.

all right. just in, we heard from president biden, and he is on the way to illinois to meet with the uaw leader and the governor of illinois, but as he was departing, he answered a number of questions on pressing issues, including situation on the ground in gaza and a recent string of polling that has not been looking good at him. a number of newsy answers. >> and what about in gaza -- >> any chance of getting the hostages out? >> what about the hostages?
7:44 am
what about the hostages in gaza? >> we will not stop until we get them out. >> what has been the delay? >> mr. president, are negotiations working? >> i mean, they are working in the sense that we are hitting the targets. >> mr. president, this friday, we are celebrating 48 years of independent in angola, and would you like to send a message. >> yes, we will build on our relationship with angola. and -- >> when are you meeting with president lorenzo, and you have
7:45 am
not met with him yet. >> i don't have a time yet, but i am sure that i will be meeting with him. >> okay. that is president biden and other questions that we could not get about the current polling, and we will try to get that there, but he was asked about the possibilities of a cease-fire in gaza, and he said, no, there is no possibility. he believes that strikes have been working. retaliatory strikes. with iranian interests in syria, he says those have been working. as to the messages to the families held in gaza, he said that his message is that we are continuing to work to get them freed. as i said, there was even more there, and we will bring it to you in just a moment. he is on his way, as i said, the president is, to illinois for

politicians and military officers and government contractors with security clearances. paula reid joins us from washington. there is a lot of wow in what i just said, paula. >> a lot of wow indeed. going back to 2020 when federal officials started investigating this organization. they were advertising on at least two web sites. what they had advertised were sexual services with primarily asian women, and if you were interested, you would receive a text message with women, and hourly rates from $300 to $600-some-odd of services. if you wanted to avail, you would have to share some personally identifiable information and driver's license and information about the employer and credit card information and you would be charged a monthly fee. i can understand why some organizations of this type might want that information to protect
7:52 am
the women and the people working there, but it also makes these clients quite vulnerable particularly if they have, say, a security clearance or a very public job or a high-ranking position in the military. they repeatedly referred to this brothel as high-end, and i thought, what makes s s this high-end. according to the investigators the rooms and the apartments rented to conduct this activity, the monthly rent on this was up to $5,000 a month. they also point to the types of clients. now, let's listen to the u.s. attorney describe exactly who was soliciting these services. >> they are doctors. they are lawyers. they are accountants. they are elected officials. they are executives at high-tech companies and pharmaceutical companies. they are military officers. government contrackers to, professors, scientist, and pick a profession, and they are probably represented in this
7:53 am
case. >> so far, they have not identified any of the clients and insist it is not to protect them, but instead because the investigation is ongoing and think have search warrants ongoinged and they have interviewed 20 of the clients so far, and they believe there could be hundred more, but if you are looking at where the operations were conducted tyson's corner, virginia, right outside of the beltway here where there is a number of a aerospace and cambridge, massachusetts, where there is biotech. and i believe there is more to this case than could have been, and the officials have not said it, but it is a fair question, more to this and some sort of espionage or intelligence gathering going on here which is more difficult to identify these clients depending upon who they are. >> literally every sentence of the report here made it more and more intriguing. it is feeling like it is a lot more here to learn and a whole
7:54 am
lot more with this story. paula reid, thank you for that. >> yes, it used to be an october surprise, and now it is november surprise, because it is elected officials caught up in this, paula reported. and now, much more to say about the issues facing this country and abroad. >> and when can you get the hostages out? >> we are hopeful. things are moving along. >> did you ask for a three-day pause to netanyahu? >> i have been asking for a pause for a lot more than three days. >> did you ask him to pause for three days to get the hostages out, for that length of time? >> yes, i have been asking for a longer pause for some of them. >> are you looking for an -- >> are you looking for a government shutdown in eight days and are you looking to how to move past it? >> i wish the house would get to work. i am not being facetious. the idea that we are playing
7:55 am
games with the shutdown at this moment is just bizarre. i think that we taught be able to combine ukraine and israel and i'm open to discussions on the border. i have already made some proposals. there is no need for any of this. >> will you be bringing up the -- >> excuse sne. >> -- excuse me? >> will you be bringing up the issue of an endorsement with shawn fain? >> what is that? >> are you going to be bringing up the issue of an endorsement with shawn fain of the uaw. >> and what are you -- >> it is going to be taking longer than i hoped. >> what about with tesla and toyota, mr. president? >> yes. thank you. you are listening to the president there, and he has been asking for longer than three-day pause for israel to halt the
7:56 am
bombing in gaza and not just because of the hostage situation, but the humanitarian situation there. he has told the house to get to work. and the funding for ukraine and israel should not be a sticking point. and that is comments from the president at andrews air force base. all right. last night, how the republican debate overshadowed one focus for the gop, and how much did the absence of donald trump figure into the conversation? we will take a look ahead.
