12:06 am
immediately no more excuses. >> sh knows he's a crook and the fact he hasn't been expelled is a system of the broken political system that makes my generation feel disillusioned. >> i want to bring in marion daly who first broke the story on the santos scandal. thanks for being here. you wrote an article when he was running for this seat. suspicions claimed net worth of $11 million. it says controversial u.s. congressional candidate george santos has final little filed his personal finanancial disclosure report on september 6, 20 months late claiming rise
12:07 am
in alleged net worth to $11 million. two years ago in 2020 santos claimed he had no assets over $5,000 no bank account, no sock accounts, no real property, net worth barely above zero so i got to ask you when you see this coming out and the ethics report are you feeling vindicated about your over 40? >> i'm feeling vindicated. we were told everything. that man told our paper everything he could come up, things i could never repeat, every form of hire that everything wasn't true and we had absolutely been vindicated. excuse me. i'm very proud. >> i have a cough myself.
12:08 am
>> i am so proud of our team and so proud we have been proven right. if only we had been listened to. if only someone had taken notice before election day we would not be where we are today. but the article didn't get the pickup we would have liked. >> why do you think that's the case? you know i think because people don't realize how important local papers are. news is local. everything is truly local. we have a staff. our reporters live except for a few of us live in the district. live in the neighborhood. the man who delivers our papers receives our papers and he's a subscriber. it's hand-delivered to coffee shops. it's hand-delivered to the mom and pop shops.
12:09 am
it's hand-delivered to the delis and people goet out of their bay to fine it. we cover the local stories, yes and but in was a major local story. this was very important that people of congressional district 3 deserved better. they did not deserve this. >> marine daly you were ahead of the game. thank you. i appreciate it so much. >> i want to bring in robert zimmerman a former congressional candidates who ran and lot of against george santos in 2022. robert thank you for being here. first i echo what maureen had to say about allpolitics being local. there were actually just going through it there were thousands of dollars spent on designer
12:10 am
goods and botox and only fans on the campaign dime. what is your reaction and what are you hearing from the folks in your district about all these revelations? >> look. let's say first to maureen and her publisher for their excellent work they did. we took their articles and circulated them throughout the district. i think 80,000 texts went door to door. we sounded the alarm as best we could. we were the only ones amongst the candidates who didn't santos has been running four years and republicans never raised these issues, democrat who ran before me never did opposition research on him. so we did our best as well and i think blank slate media steve and others tried to sound the alarm but i think when you look at the results today, look at the stories today it's vindication nor journalist vps
12:11 am
and they did their best on it but the bigger point that strikes me is that as you said the beginning of the show what took so long. that is petty ante thief in a petty ante hood. the federal government had access to the banking records. has this information. why didn't it come out earlier? >> excuse me. that's a question for us. most people have not been a part of the campaign or don't know what goes night but they assume that opposition research happened in the report the committee concludes things called a vulnerability report that was commissionth by santoses 2022 campaign detailing lies about education and work history so you talked about the use of research. why did this not get raised
12:12 am
earlier? >> well in fact we were the only ones in the four years of his congressional campaign that ever sounded the alarm on it. the democratic congressional campaign committee which was in charge of research on santos produced an 87 report and nailed a lot of important issues. part of the problem here is that your own cnn contributor said the media cover the marquee races not the local elections and get lost in the process and many journalists came back to us and said we don't have the money staff or time to do this kind of work. part of the problem journalists have in campaigns is the federal election commission that should be charged with overseeing the financial reports that are being issued doesn't have the staff to do that type of investigative work. so that's the real frustration. but here's the bigger point. for a year now laura the republicans in congress ever known the story on this guy.
12:13 am
there's no mystery here. selfish manipulation of power desperation to hold on to their majority they bury these stories. this ethics report wasn't written the past couple days. these facts have been known a long time but they covered up these facts n. fact they were accomplices to his crimes by trying to cover up the situation and protect him. now they have to release it because of public pressure but were not there yet. don't take for granted heal be expelled. we have to keep the public pressure on to make sure he's expelled from congress. >> i wonder what will happen next including who might take his seat and run again. will it be you robert? >> you know my focus for the past year has been building a bipartisan coalition to make sure she expelled from congress and keeping pressure on congress and we are making problem and other great groups helping us doing their conducting theheir work to do that as well but in addition to that when there's
12:14 am
time for political discussion we will have it and i'll clue you in the right now we may have a special election. there may be a new congressional district on top of that. so now is not the time to talk about the political agenda. it's time to focus on restoring integrity to our system and related sayings for over 750,000 people who haven't had representation or a congressional office there to service them. i've been working on cases with issues of my campaign staff because i'm the one they're calling because his office is virtually shut down. >> robert zimmerman i'll put that down as tbd. thanks for joining us. >> i'll keep you posted. >> that's not tbd. that's something for another day. thank you so much. i bring in legal analyst elliott williams and former congressmen joe walsh. what i get from this is what is
12:15 am
going to happen now? you've been a member of congress. it did take a long time to get to this particular point. what happens next? is it a guarantee he will be expelled? >> i think so because it's political that it's taken this long but now it's political he's going to be expelled because republicans want him gone. she damaged goods heading into an election year. they're going to move this quickly. >> he has criminal charges as well. does this help the prosecution? >> there's conflict with the prosecution because the justice department went back and forth whether to pause the congressional investigation while this was going on so there could be more charges here. he's been charged with crimes and could be more but it's easy to get wrapped up in the botox and hamptons and nonsense and waited comes down to is when people give money to campaigns
12:16 am
ought to know it's being spent by the campaign and campaigns ought to be on west the public about what they're doing and santos did neither of those things and took the money and abused positions in congress. >> irrespective test the test says if the expense would exist even in the absence of the candidacy or even if the office holder were not in offers then the personal use ban applies. fancy way of saying you can't spent the money not campaign related so you look at the bag, the botox, it doesn't pass the smell test. >> as a former member you have to be so careful where you classify everything but there was none of that here. he basically lived off his campaign. there's no gray area here. everything he did he lived off
12:17 am
of his campaign. it's one of the egregious abuses of can pain finance i've ever seen. >> the beauty of the house ethics committee so much of congress is partisan and vicious. >> we know that. >> we know that very well. but the house committee is split equal number of democrats and republicans in order to move something forward they have to agree on some bipartisan agreement here. that's clearly here and this was scathing in tone starting with first sentence like george santos cannot be trusted. those are strong words from a body in congress. >> he's set to have a press conference november 30th. he's not going to run for reelection. what is he going to say? >> they're going to mover on this i think quickly after thanksgiving so we will know. look. maybe i'm the lone wolf at this table. this is historic. i mean the only member who have
12:18 am
been booted because they joined a confederacy or convicted in a court of law. i worry about this precedent of expeling a member who has been charged. >> that's why they were so aggressive about leapfrogging the justice department so they coax pell him if they waited for the process to play out it could have been years before it got prosecuted. it could have been years. >> if you're talking about trying to have some currency some bargaining chip being a member of congress saying look i'll leave is, that enough? i will note for everyone he did beat the person we spoke to by 20,000 votes in addition where biden won by 8 points the question is can a democrat wind and run there elliott williams joe walsh thank you. why are some young americans on tiktok say they sympathize with
12:19 am
12:23 am
>> dozens of young americans on tiktok now say that they sympathize with osama bin laden. you heard that right. the terrorist who orchestrated the 9/11 attacks, the worst terror attacks on united states soil in history suddenly going viral on tiktok. i'm uncomfortable seeing his face on the other side of me on this screen. users have been posting videos on the social media platform supporting a letter bin laden wrote in 2002 criticizing the united states and its support of israel. to justify the targeting and killing of american civilians and filled with antisemitism.

12:25 am
was post build the guardian years ago and got hundreds of thousands of views from their web site and endeavors of young people this was not just young people. it was a diverse array of morons for whom this was all new and were interested and fascinated by it. it was not an enormous phenomenon. we are living and era when theories are spilling out the way they didn't used to but i think we should be careful about amplifying the attacks. i think the attention to these have come after from journalists like us seeing them saying what is this. >> the guardian you mentioned actually had a link to the letter and then had an article
12:26 am
that provided context to analyze it more so. they then pulled it down and that fueled some conspiracy y about they're trying shield people from the information so it became a professorsi about the issue. you talk about being careful bit. careful is not necessarily the same as tiktok as it would be for a media outlet or fuse service but according to a poll ben a third of americans between age 18-29 get their news from tiktok. i'm wondering when you think about that scope and that cross section, is there an added danger at the prospect it could gogo viral and be quickly absord and consumed? >> you know, it's interesting we just lived through this decade in media where facebook and twitter were the dominant platforms for information for

12:44 am
>> there could be a power dynamic in a relationship between a man and a woman where there aren't millions and millions of dollars in the room where there is not someone like i said is a living legend who is almost almost 20 years your senior. you can have a power dynamic with everyday people when it comes to gender violence and intimate partner violence sexual assault and everything that cassie is alleging so when you think about what she was actually alleging and how singular, not many of us know what it's like to be partnered with someone at this level and has this power and control and she was also his employee technically as an artist so the ways in which the matchup was not existing.
