a to cnn new central coast at this hour with presidents some in more legal peril, but this time the charges could land him in prison for 17 years. that is if he's found on guilty on 90 charges. this is just his apartment has brought for three of them are felony counts. counsel david weiss is accusing hunter biden of million-dollar tax evasion, tax fraud, and more. the new charges add to the fallout from that collapsed plea deal that he struggled federal prosecutors that the part of the summer. hunter biden's attorney says this, quote, if hunter's lesson was anything other than biden, the charges in delaware and now
12:02 pm
california have not would have been brought under five years of efficient and no new evidence, two years after hunter paid his taxes back in full, the u.s. attorney has piled on nine new charges when he had egregious month ago to resolve this matter with a pair of misdemeanors. president biden we should point out is not part of any of his sons charges. let's break this down with cnn's paul reed, paul, special counsel so that hunter biden had the money to pay his taxes but he spent it on other things , which they spell out in great detail. >>, they go to great lengths, being extremely specific and kind of embarrassing him a couple of ways but in details telling what it was as big as my on the fabric they said he was betting on quote drugs, escorting girlfriend, luxury hotels, and rental properties. exotic cars, clothing, and other items with personal nature , in short, everything but his taxes. if he spent $600,000 on various women, hundreds of thousands of dollars and tens of thousands of dollars on rehab for drug and alcohol, course he has been very open about his abuse
12:03 pm
issues. hunter biden did pay these taxes along with hundred of thousands of dollars in fees and penalties, and his lawyers have insisted that prosecutors here have vowed to political pressure to charge the president's son with something. now interestingly, hunter appeared on moby's podcast, now it is unclear when it was taken the phone before the indictment was unsealed last night, he gave his first really in-depth public, internalizing resolutions, for five or six years now. with >> they are trying to, in their most illegitimate way, but rational way, they are trying to destroy a presidency. and so it is not about me. and their most base way, what they are trying to do is they are trying to kill me. knowing that it will be a pain greater than my father could be able to handle.
12:04 pm
>> i got before last night's indictment, at this point it is unclear when hunter biden will make his first appearance in federal court, and this is the second federal case he is facing this year for the first of course being on charges in delaware. >> for the details, around to now to end cnn! come up road employer c.h.a.z. know who helped orchestrate the 2020 collectors scheme is now operating with investigators in michigan and wisconsin. source is telling us that chaz roe is hoping to avoid more criminal charges after he already pleaded guilty to the conspiracy in georgia. cnn's marshall cohen is with us now on this marshall, what were you wanting to >> hey, breanna, this is a radical transformation for can just burrow from a 2020 conspirator to a cooperator today. so we already knew that he was cooperating with state investigators in georgia and nevada, the news today is that the cooperation has gone on in a broader degree than we knew.
12:05 pm
he has now speaking and proffering information to the investigators in michigan and wisconsin. and that is very notable for many reasons, one of which is that for the first time that we have learned of the criminal investigation in wisconsin. as you can see on this map, there were seven states that the trump campaign targeted in 2020, and this development means that there are now criminal probes in six of the 7. three of those probes have already led to criminal charges, the most famously georgia where chest burrow pleaded guilty, nevada indicted most take a look, it was earlier this week. in michigan indicted its fake electors in july, sources telling myself and our colleague zachary: that that probe is possibly widening, ramping up, and the ch burrow corporation is a big part of that. breanna? >> echo as early as per marshall cohen, jackie received report. and with us now is secretary of
12:06 pm
state brad, he easily co- authored an op-ed for the national review along with several other secretaries of state. talking with the need for both parties to help restore trust in american election systems. to that point, secretary, you dissolve! the reporting here that chest burrow is not cooperating with probes in michigan and wisconsin, already pleaded guilty of course to conspiracy in georgia. are these investigations in cases enough to put an end to conspiracies and to rebuild public trust in elections? >> well i think it is incumbent upon all of us both exile to stand up and give people the facts, that is what we have been doing with georgia since 2020. i have been refined to people, giving them the facts, and giving back in georgia going back to 20 is that 27,500 people process the president ovaries to get done in developing that his ways are republican congress and get about 27,500 votes more than president trump and also the 3000 republicans
12:07 pm
that voted in the june 2020 program never came back up to vote in the fall election, that is what he came up short, it was a simple zapper all the other allegations that were raised we responded point by point at the time, even wrote a 10 page letter to congress. i think it is really poor that will stand up, you know, give people the facts, but also look at how we can improve the process. i know you're in georgia and the other states that editorial have also been working, is also having political photo i.d. for food voting, and ensure the security, but also a lot of confidence. so after our 2020 race, both m.i.t. and you created a poll in over 90% of all georgia what they found, 90% of all georgians really feel comfortable and have high confidence in results of the georgia election process. they may not like the results but they do have confidence in the process that we have in georgia. >> so, you are on the phone county prosecutor's witness list
12:08 pm
, in the election subversion case there. notably several co-defendants in that case, including the former president have had very charged words for some of the witnesses on the list. you have been someone that has received also the threats going back to the 2020 election because of your taking a stand for democracy. essentially for repeating the truths that donald trump lost the 2020 election in georgia. i'm wondering what you make of what you have seen lately from some of these co-defendants, including the president himself when it comes to attacking natalie funny willis but other witnesses in the case. >> well, as you know, you can make all sorts of allegations and say anything you want to social media, but when you get to court of law, you will have to prove facts. and we have the facts. also when you write a letter to congress a 10 page letter like i did and i got her on january 6th, 2021. i want to make sure i did have
12:09 pm
the facts and respond original point, nothing has changed other than we found two more dead people, so now we're up to a total of four. but i understand that the trump campaign paid for two, and those reports very early on in data that showed them that president trump did not come up short. very early on that they had only identified list of the potential voters that were actually dying and people had a suing identities. we have found two coming out onto the war. so, four, that is it. those types of allegations you know god is everywhere paul approved out the misinformation practice information. the real problem with that also people are thought of this. it is our society apart, we live in polarized times ability with facts and when you lose, you saw honorably, and that is by means if you want to run again, there's nothing stopping you from doing that. but also when you an, win recently too. is the american way, be a good sport about things. when you win when the win
12:10 pm
graciously as well as of the definition of being a good sportsmanship, right? so you write in your up" the very ideals of constitutional democracy, the divine america are at risk in every corner of the world. the united states is a beacon of hope for those who struggle under dictators and autocrats in urine for peace, freedom, self determination for democracy. this is timely considering what we heard from president trump, he made some comments in tahoe this week, yeah, his talk a little bit about what he was doing the second term raising questions about whether he would be authoritarian or more authoritarian, and he sort of, may downplay what he said when he was challenged on that, he really says that questions about it. what is your reaction? >> i believe that americans are aspirational, positive people, and they're looking for somebody
12:11 pm
with positive motivation to move us forward. i love to talk back out until about leadership. whether it's clinical, little military, or business leadership, some of them can cost a positive vision get things done. i come from stationary, a construction background, and takes maybe 18 months to 24 months to build a building. now, if you want to blow it up in over a weekend and nobody can watch it on tv, but it takes time to build things up. that is a positive force, and americans are positive people, they're looking for in a positive issue. that is what we are looking to vote for next year. anything that is what is really that, you know, i guess the lack of excitement they both play a part right now, they're looking for the next generation leader. is a link to the reagan for you, is it up permanent resident nice and hot. with that look like? move forward? i think both parties are looking for positive visionary leadership. >> georgia secretary of state, so much whiskey the time. >> thank you.
12:12 pm
>> is still to come, the pressure is really mounting for the diversity pennsylvania president to resign after her controversial congressional testimony about anti-semitism on her campus. plus we are awaiting the sentencing of the teenager who opened fire at a michigan high school when he was 15. he is facing the harshest possible punishment in the state state. life in prison without the possibility of parole.

pressure is mounting on the presidents of harvard, penn, and m.i.t. to retie resign after the congressional disorders this week when they struggle to say the calling for the genocide of violates their respective schools codes of conduct on bullying or harassment, but
12:17 pm
others are sounding off. today we learned that rabbi david resigned from harvard's anti-semitism advisory group. in a prominent panel is threatening to pull a $100 million donation, the schools president steps down. penn's board of trustees held an emergency meeting on thursday about president liz mcgill and the wharton board of advisers is calling for her immediate resignation. mcgill attended to clarify her testimony in social media post on wednesday. today harvard's president claudine gaye apologized for her comments in an interview with the school newspaper actually published last night, it's that i am sorry, it's edwards matter, but those apologies may be too little too late for a growing list of alumni, students, business leaders, and politicians who want those leaders out. morris? >> we wanted dig deeper on all the university of penn congregation. yvonne, thank you so much was he being with us, now you actually stepped down from the pen board of trustees in october, citing the universities embrace of anti-semitism, this
12:18 pm
was actually before we saw some of the most intense demonstrations on it only on that campus but other campuses around the country. what led you to resign specifically, and what do you feel now in retrospect singing is, the situation with these university presidents? >> well, i resigned because i was appalled at the behavior and the position taken by the university president. she was visited by one of our major donors, ron lowder prior to palestinian festival, and was , and it was expired to her that the nature of the organization, and that they were not just festival, that they were putting on, but that they were a group that was calling for the annihilation of the state of israel, and for the genocide of the jewish
12:19 pm
people. she was given evidence of that fact, and information and documentation. and, you know, i'm sure that she reviewed her that with the board chair, but decided to put the festival on anyway and came to backfire on her as mr. lowder's comments were correct and in fact that the festival turned out to be exactly what he outlined it to be. she was given an opportunity to right the wrong and really did not. and the board, you know, was very passive about it and did not really do anything. i wanted to speak up and do something about it and make my position clear, i talked to other board members, and it was the same old same old, everyone was just, did not want to be
12:20 pm
involved in the controversy and did not want to buck the system or block the president or the board chair. i agreed to stay on to the second we had a mental eight emergency meeting was held on a particular saturday. and when i heard that there was nothing that was going to change, i just was so appalled that i resigned. you know, and to me i don't know when, i don't think stopping ammons for higher learning and they become hotbeds for radical, political manipulation. >> so, yvonne, you mentioned the emergency meeting that took place on the saturday that that expedited your resignation, there was one yesterday. you have still been in that room would you have been calling for mcgill's resignation? >> absolutely. at yesterday's of how this is about me demonstrate that she is unfit to be the president of
12:21 pm
the university of pennsylvania. but having said that, and i do not know how hard he works, but the diversity of penn, the board chair and the president are joined at the hip. there is nothing that the president says or does, especially in controversial matter that is not passed on by the board chair. as i can tell you in addition to losing mcgill, scott rock means to resign as board chair. because he has been absolutely doing it to hip with her on these issues. >> do you think penn state's policies are clear when it comes to what students can say, what issues they can demonstrate for or against on-campus? >> all, i think in general since they are clear, but i mean there's a big difference between freedom of speech and
12:22 pm
hate speech. and you can allow hate each to occur on campus. all for free squeak speech. wanted to mistreat recently? they want to take a position on you know? and talk about whether positions are on a particular subject, that is fine by me. but you cannot have a hate speech, you cannot intimidate other students. you can it so that the jewish students are free to come out of the dorms in class. yeah, anti-no been under study recently on the jewish students in colleges and universities across the country. they found that 50%, more than 50% of the jewish students were afraid to leave the dorms and go to class. they found that 75% of the jewish students were either involved directly in different
12:23 pm
an estimate is on-campus or witness and estimate is on their campus. you cannot have that in america, you cannot have that at the university of pennsylvania. >> gone, we have to leave the conversation there. we very much appreciate your time, sir. >> thank you. still plenty more news to come on cnn new central including how supplicants ramping up their probe into president biden. they are sticking to authorize an impeachment inquiry in the coming days and weeks. we will discuss with tim bichette when we come back.

this is the sentencing hearing for ethan crumley, the michigan school shooter, these are closing arguments underway, but if sentencing does begin we are going to bring that to live, so keep an eye on this. in the meantime. hunter biden is facing new tax charges, house republicans wrapping up their probe into his father as well. in the coming days, it will take a key step towards formalizing their impeachment inquiry into president biden. we are trying out a cumbersome and temperature, he is a republican from tennessee and he serves on the house oversight and foreign affairs committee. congressman, thank you so much for being with us. are republicans in swing districts, are the beatles, they were the floor vote on the impeachment inquiry? what a telling you i sure this
12:29 pm
will pass? >> i think we are very close to having the boats on the inquiry , inquiries not an impeachment, and should be coming and everyone should support anyone for looking for open record in getting the facts out. peter johnson was very clear as well as chairman toma in chairman jordan that in fact, we would be looking at the facts and not remembering any in the window, and this allows us to do that in a very open setting, and the american public would be very encouraging to follow along with this thing and a very long when he trailed through this thing. >> you know, even upping the distinction, it will leave these vulnerable republicans.more vulnerable, are you they telling you that they are worried? >> i don't see how it leads anybody, you got $30 million
12:30 pm
for both of these families, the president said early on he had no knowledge of it, he had sworn us of anything they did he said i did not talk to my son about this, and in fact he did. and he said he was not involved with the chinese and in fact this latest investment of $5 million from the communist chinese with hunter biden is very skewed as route goes around to hames biden, the president's brother, back through one of the 20 like 22 shell company that had been greeted with hunter biden associated with the 22 counts, and that eventually floats a check to the president, to present biden. so, there's a pretty clear route . >> excuse me? there's no connection to president biden. so can you find that to what you talking about? >> yes, ma'am. there is. this latest transaction there absolutely is, and there's a monthly payment. >> way, are you talking about a
12:31 pm
1300, $1380 transaction that the car payment reimbursement? >> now that is what they are calling it but actually it was actually -- said no, that is what the committee, the committee put out a receipt that shows it is a reimbursement for car payment. and also some of the ways in which your characterizing some of the things about the involvement, it is just not as clear-cut as you are characterizing it to be. so is definitely going to let me talk? >> i did let you speak. congressman, with all due respect no, no you are speaking about me, sir. with all due, with all due respect i let you speak, and then i clarified just to be clear about what you are saying . so yes he does, and i will let you speak, since you are saying, you know, so much of this has to do with president biden although there is no evidence of that, with oversight committee subpoena
12:32 pm
him? >> will the oversight committee who? president biden or hunter? i don't know. at some point i suspect that can happen but i doubt he would show and i doubt hunter is going to show not actually an indictment for 10 days, and arms having a pistol when he is back on drugs is a clear line between the communist china $5 million investment with hunter biden. man, because he has as far as i can see on java patient is and crack cocaine to militias be honest. this guy is bad news but you also want to cover for him and that is fine, but there is a security threat on the money throwing from the communist chinese to hunter, to one of his 22 shell companies. there are several checks that have been made available to you all for use of shell, and by
12:33 pm
saying there is no evidence, ma'am, i realize that is the democrat national talking point that you will continue to regurgitate, but the truth is is that this stuff is out there, and if you are investing in reporters, if not is put at the bottom paid for by the democratic national committee because this is clearly, clearly money. we're talking about $30 million, what quotations does hunter biden have for receiving $30 million to from russian oligarchs, from chinese communist numbers, the legal sufficiency has -- >> is a good question. i give you that. so, that is a good question. and no, the art these are salacious details in this indictment of course, i mean you read this 56 pages, this crazy stuff in there, and i certainly give you that. but the receipts you're talking about -- no, i let you speak, i let you speak. so, i let you speak coming out please let me -- yeah, i let you speak.
12:34 pm
the receipts you're talking about released by the oversight committee, released by, you know, republican went into the easier, it is very clear what there is about, i just think that we should be very clear about what they are. you know, to that point, that is very important, because it is not what you are making it out to be. and that is not to say that you might not find something if you did, certainly it would be very into that in exploring that, but luscious clear about what is out there now. no connie colla talking point, but we are just following the facts here. as they are at this moment in time. >> maxar, ma'am hunter biden and the biden crime family have received over $30 million, he has no qualifications, the president said you can go back to review the tapes, he said i
12:35 pm
did not talk to my son about any of his business dealings, we have sworn testimony yet in congress of a man that is said that hunter literally had their phone around to numbers of the board. you also have the president saying that that he did not invest, he is not invested or anything with any of the feminist chinese. $5 million, and that money flows from hunter through one of his, one of his shell corporations to hunters uncle, the president's brother, and then you see $40,000 check for the president of dural biden, or vice president other than vice president, joe biden. collocations are there? where is this money coming from? why are they are paying their polling for influence. because of a job. hunter biden publications, you can ask about that. well i'm out of time now sir, in fairness, but just to be clear, right now there is not a connection you are alleging to
12:36 pm
the president, and certainly that is something that should be explored if it were there. well i am out of time now, sir. i'm out of time. i'm sorry you said some of the same thing three times, and you did not do that you have more time, sir. that is where we are, we are out of time now, i certainly appreciate you joining us today. thank you. >> huntsman, really appreciate your time, so thank you so much, you're welcome anytime. >> it has been my pleasure and i hope you have a merry christmas, ma'am. >> you too, sir. up next, emotional and really powerful statements, these have been gut wrenching by survivors and family numbers of the victims of the oxford high school shooting in michigan, they're in court right now for this shooter's sentencing, we will have that next.

in pontiac, michigan schoolroom, but it has already been a highly emotional day as a judge had the impact statements from parents and siblings of the victims, along with students and teachers who may have survived. but are now forever marked by what happened that day. cnn's jean is for us. jean, these impact statements at times have been very difficult to listen to. which of most stood out to you? >> you know, i think all of
12:42 pm
them had their individuality, their uniqueness, i will take what is happening right now in this courtroom, we are getting close to the end. both sides have been arguing, the prosecution of course arguing for life without any possibility of parole, and now the defense is arguing, and they are saying that he is redeemable, that he is salvageable, that the person that he walked in two years ago to that gym is not the person up today, he has been undergoing psychological counseling, that he has gone through the stages of grief, and that he needs to have a term of years so that then he can work toward that, and at some point possibly be released. now one of the surviving shooting victims gave her impact statement today. her name is kylie osage, will you listen to how she describes what happened to her. >> i was laying on my side, like this. i realize what had just happened . i was just shot, that is
12:43 pm
going to die, i let myself drop it down to the floor where i felt warmth in my face. warmth from blood soaking into the carpet. i've ever hearing the square sound against my right ear, it was the sounds of carpet mixed with blood. going into my ear. i started yelling for help, but when i say yelling, i me a shout that was not enough for someone around me to hear, yet quite enough for the shooter not to hear me. >> now we do believe these closing arguments are nearing their end, and then it will be that moment for the sentence, and we don't know the judge will have a short break when he goes into it when i think of the defendant himself can stand and make an allocation before the judge, you can beg for
12:44 pm
mercy, that is his right and we are left to see if that is going to happen. forest. >> please keep us posted damaging to stay with cnn, we are back in just a few minutes. claimant

help stop the woman from allegedly trying to set fire to the birth home of dr. martin luther king jr. >> yeah, that 26-year-old woman is under arrest, facing multiple charges. a navy spokesperson tells cnn, she is actually a navy veteran.
12:49 pm
police say if those witnesses had not been there, the historic landmark could have turned into ashes. >> it could have been a matter of seconds before the house was engulfed in flames. it was really about the timing and the witnesses being there in the right place at the right time. >> we actually have to step away for a moment and take you straight to a courtroom in pontiac, michigan, where ethan crumbley, the convicted shooter is speaking now. listen. >> i do not diminish any ability. they did not know and i did not tell them what they were going to do, so they are not at fault of what i have done. i am a really bad person. i have done terrible things that no one should ever have to do. i have lied. i'm not trustworthy. i've hurt many people.
12:50 pm
and that is what i have done and i'm not denying it, but that's not who i plan to be. whatever sentence it is, i do plan to be better than i am. i don't know if you believe that, but records, 15, 20, 25 years can show that i will change because it may not show now from two years of records, but i'm trying. and all i want is for the people i hurt to just have a final sense that justice has somewhat been served at any capacity that they can recognize it with. any sentence that they ask for, i do ask that you impose on me because i want them to be happy. i want them to feel secure and safe. i do not want them to worry another day because i'm really sorry for what i have done, what i have taken of them. i cannot give it back, but i can try my best in the future to help other people, and that is
12:51 pm
what had i will do. so thank you. >> thank you. >> okay, this court has listened to extensive evidence in this case. i heard four days of testimony from the miller hearing. i presided over numerous placement hearings. i conducted the initial placement hearing and in this case. so the court is fully aware of the defendant's upbringing, fully aware of the circumstances that brought him before the court. first to the victims of the deceased, the court sends out its sincerist condolences to the family. to the injured victims and to those victims as it relates to count one, terrorism causing
12:52 pm
death. thank you for your courage and strength that's equal today as well as sending written correspondence. as they pointed out, the court has read everything that you submitted. and i've read the people's response. i've read all the exhibits that were attached and i read every single impact statement over the course of three days. probably took me closer to 36 hours to read all of this, so i have read everything, and i have gone back through the complete file. the letters truly gave the court a slither of increase on justin, anna tate, and madison. the court cannot begin to imagine the fear that those parents had on november 30, 2021. i cannot even fathom. and to have to wait to see if your loved one would return is
12:53 pm
heart wrenching, and that is true terror. and not to have your loved one show up, the court could not imagine the pain. and whatever they sentence will not bring the loved ones back or the fiscal scars some of you may have. but i hope this sentence will show i know this has not been easy on them as well. and the court has read the
12:54 pm
people's response. they should receive the years because of defense alleged mental illness. excuse me in 2021 case. the court knows that the defendant may be mentally ill that it means he is corrupt. what the court notes is that he has an obsession with violence. that this act involved extensive planning, extensive research, and he executed the school shooting. he had initially a .22 caliber weapon that he wrote would not do enough damage. and so weeks and weeks prior to this event, he started to formulate this plan, and he knew and he asked for the weapon that could cause the most harm with.
12:55 pm
as council is aware, it doesn't only involve the rehabilitation, but involves deterrent and punishment. he started in the hopes that they would never commit an act like this again, and that there is also public deterrence, where the public sees the punishment that the individual has received in hopes that had the public would never do anything like this in the future. the court has read the report and was very lengthy. respectfully the court does not find this court to be mitigating in this case. the report simply points the finger at oxford public schools, while the court agrees that more possibly could have been done. that issue is not properly before this court.
12:56 pm
we are here for sentencing based upon the defendant's actions. and as the defendant pointed out himself, he took responsibility. and he, himself, is not asking this court for that term of years. the court cannot score the sense of planning and execution of this case enough. he practiced shooting at a gun range. he practiced unracking the gun. on november 30, 2021, he could have chosen not to conduct the school shootings. when his parents were called to the school that morning for its drawings, he could have said something then. he had a gun in his backpack at that time. when the school advised the parents to please give them help within the next 48 hours. he could have stopped then and simply accepted the help that was going to be offered to him. according to the reports, she'd get him the help. he could have changed his mind.
12:57 pm
unfortunately after shooting the first person, he could have changed his mind at that point. but he didn't. he continued to walk through school. picking, choosing who was going to die. as the defendants in his own words, this is nobody's fault, but his own. he stated this afternoon that with help that it probably would not have stopped him. that is absolutely concerning to this court. the court apologizes to the victim for the bluntness. but at point-blank range, after having him get down on his knees in front of another student. he shot hannah who was shot once before. he walked up to her to finish
12:58 pm
that job by shooting her again. that is an execution. that is torture. he shot multiple people multiple times. as he wrote, he did this for notoriety. he wanted to go down in history as the biggest school shooter in michigan history. the court cannot ignore the deep trauma, the constant state of michigan. but in particular, the oxford community, the court cannot ignore that. the court knows they return to oxford high school after this tragic event. the court cannot even fathom or imagine walking through the halls of that school and knowing that your fellow student, your friend, your classmate was killed in a restroom or in the hallway. most, if not all the letters that were read that there was significant number of people in
12:59 pm
oxford that now have ptsd. that now has survivor's guilt in deep depression that arose from this incident. the actions clearly created a new normal for all the individuals involved and all of those indirectly impacted as well. unfortunately this is what the defendant wanted as he wrote in this journal. he wanted to see the impact of the crime, which is why he did not take his own life. again, this goes back to the extensive planning. he chose not to die on that day because he wanted the notoriety. the terror that he caused in the state of michigan and in oxford is true. respectfully the defendant is the rare juvenile before this court. the court having read the psi
1:00 pm
and being fully committed. but before i get that, i'll note that council brought up an issue of making the look for hitler and that does not change the opinion about the obsession with violence. thank you for bringing that to our attention and it does not change their opinion about being obsessed with violence because the obsession is also outlined in the websites he visited. it was also outlined in his extensive drawings of violence. in his obsession, it continued as i noted in the court's opinion, even while he was in the oakland county jail. with that, the court having vetted the psi and being familiar with the defendant and the facts of this case, believes it is in the best interest of justice as well as to the needs of this case to sentence them as follows,
