that fund politicians' pet projects. katie porter. focused on your challenges - from lowering housing costs to fighting climate change. shake up the senate - with democrat katie porter. i'm katie porter and i approve this message. this election is a choice between results or just rhetoric. californians deserve a senator who is going to deliver for them every day and not just talk a good game. adam schiff. he held a dangerous president accountable. he also helped lower drug costs, bring good jobs back home, and build affordable housing. now he's running for the senate. our economy, our democracy, our planet. this is why we fight. i'm adam schiff, and i approve this message.
6:01 am
i'm john berman in new york. kate bolduan is in new hampshire. are you surprised i said new york? donald trump's first campaign stop after winning the iowa caucuses, a federal court here in new york. his motorcade arrived just minutes ago. this is this first day of a trial where a jury will determine how much trump must pay e. jean carroll for defaming her after she accused him of raping and sexually assaulting her. this is where donald trump is taking his campaign today. >> and we're going to have more on that legal battle and where trump is going to be in court. we'll have much more on that in a moment, but let's talk about why i'm here in the great state of new hampshire today. iowa was yesterday. new hampshire is today, and the focus of the political universe now lands squarely here.
6:02 am
after donald trump's big win, dominant win in iowa yesterday, we have big news that just dropped, nikki haley now suggesting that there may no longer be any debates coming this week. her campaign releasing a statement that read -- let me read this. we have had five great debates in this campaign. unfortunately donald trump has ducked all of them. he has nowhere left to hide. the next debate, i do, nikki haley says. it'll either be with donald trump or joe biden. i look forward to it. obviously suggesting she's no longer interested in debating ron desantis. that decision comes as the first official result of the 2024 primary are in, and everyone is working through what the numbers out of iowa now mean for new hampshire and beyond. the iowa caucuses, the results there, and donald trump's big win are answering some of the questions that have been swirling for quite some time. like, would donald trump break
6:03 am
50% in iowa? he did. would any of his rivals drop out? one did. and is a trump/biden match looking more likely today? it is. president biden's team watching all of this very closely. the president saying this about trump's iowa win. it's clear donald trump is the official front-runner. we need to work even harder now. that from president biden. and here was donald trump. >> people in our country are great. they're all great. we love iowa, but they're all great. they only want to see one thing. they want our country to come back. they're embarrassed by what's going on. our country is laughed at. all over the world, they're laughing at us, and they want our country to come back. they want america, you know, they want us to be great again. it's a very simple -- maga. make america great again. >> that was last night.
6:04 am
donald trump, nikki haley, ron desantis all have events scheduled here in new hampshire. vivek ramaswamy might be here, but he won't be campaigning for himself. he suspended his campaign after a disappointing fourth place finish in iowa, and he quickly turned around and endorsed donald trump. cnn's kristen holmes here with me in manchester, flying overnight together. you are here with me. what are you hearing about -- from the trump campaign? what are you hearing about how the candidates are refocusing and waking up with a whole new reality this morning? >> hearing from trump's advisers, this is the ideal scenario for them. for desantis to win in second place, ahead of new hampshire to kind of stem any momentum that they were seeing nikki haley have in new hampshire because ron desantis doesn't really have a path in new hampshire. he hasn't really spent any money here. it's not something they're
6:05 am
worried about here. the other key here is vivek ramaswamy. he attended some of his events in new hampshire. they think he was more popular than polls were leading on. they think this is a good thing for them. the other candidates, this is also going to extend their lifeline. ron desantis coming in second, and nikki haley knowing she's probably going to vo shave a st showing in new hampshire. here's what they said last night. >> i can tell you because of your support, in spite of all of that, that they threw at us, we got our ticket punched out of iowa. >> tonight, iowa made this republican primary a two-person race. our campaign is the last, best hope of stopping the trump/biden nightmare. >> so nikki haley, we know that trump's campaign is watching her
6:06 am
polarize very carefully here in new hampshire. they're hoping his big win in iowa gives him the momentum in the state and hoping it slows her momentum, but it won't stop them. he was only supposed to have two events here ahead of the primary. it was going to be over the weekend. he now has four events, four days of the week. only one event -- one day not having an event when he's going down to florida for melania's mother's funeral. he's clearly paying attention. the superpac pouring money into new hampshire, hitting nikki haley particularly on immigration. they think that's going to be key for them here in this state. so they're walking this carefully, but good night last night for former president donald trump. >> nikki haley was hammering immigration and border security in a sign of her closing argument in iowa. clearly it's going to be a very big issue though looking towards new hampshire. >> they have the comment she said in 2015 where she said essentially that illegal immigrants were criminals and should be treated as criminals
6:07 am
and they're cutting that clip and playing it over and over and over again, and that's where they're hitting her. they think immigration particularly in new hampshire is one of the key issues. they also have another ad running on social security, another important issue, but immigration, is what they'll really hammer home here. >> we're seeing a shift of that sound bite, to a harsher, more direct nicky kki haley taking o donald trump. programming note for all of, cnn town hall with ron desantis tonight, 9:00 p.m. eastern. it's all live here in new hampshire. wolf blitzer moderating that. you won't wan t to miss it. >> all right. so what does donald trump's win in iowa mean especially for new hampshire and going forward? first of all, as you can see here, donald trump won 98 of the 99 counties in iowa and the one county where he trails, he
6:08 am
trails nikki haley by one vote, one single vote, dominant in all 99 counties. let me show you where donald trump won by more than 10%, okay? everywhere except two counties. the county where nikki haley leads by one vote, and this county right here, story county where iowa state is right there. his lead there, four points. he was just dominant everywhere. in one sense, you can't tell much more of a story than that. among every demographic group, every geographic location, so a better way of looking at what iowa means, maybe looking at one of the other candidates here. let's x out where donald trump was, and see where nikki haley finished second. everywhere in red here is where nikki haley finished second. i want to highlight one place, and that was where des moines is, the capital. donald trump won by 11 points, but nikki haley trailed ron
6:09 am
desantis. why am i bringing this up? this is an urban and suburban area. new hampshire looks more like this county maybe than any other county. dallas county also. it's a county where she came in second, but barely. this is the county that saw the greatest growth. it's a suburban county. this is what new hampshire looks like, and nikki haley barely edging out ron desantis here, trailing donald trump by a significant amount. let's look actually at new hampshire because that's where the story is now moving. that's what we should be talking about right now, more than anything else. nikki haley as i said, those urban and suburban areas in iowa with large amounts of independent voters, that's the group she wants to target in new hampshire. why? this is the voter registration in new hampshire. you can see republican, 268,000, democrat 262,000. this is the important number. undeclared, 343,000, more than republicans or democrats.
6:10 am
republicans and undeclared can vote in the republican primary. a lot of them are independent. a lot of them are moderate. it's a big group. nikki haley wants to target them, but -- but in iowa again, our entrance polls show that donald trump led among independents. they make up a big part of this group. donald trump leading in that group as we head into new hampshire. finally one number i want to highlight that might be a warning sign for donald trump in iowa was the turnout. we're looking at a turnout right now of 110,000. that's not a lot. that's way less than 2016 which was 187,000. it's less than 2012 which was 122,000, and remember, this was the only game in town. there was no real democratic caucus, so independents might show up here. this could show -- it was very cold, but this could show an ent enthusiasm gap as we head into these other primaries.
6:11 am
donald trump heading to new hampshire ultimately today, but not before he campaigns here in new york at a federal courthouse. there is a trial here. this is his campaign stop. senior legal affairs correspondent paula reid is here to talk about what's in store today. >> reporter: john, in just a few minneapo minutes here, a jury will be selected if donald trump should pay damages to e. jean carroll about comments denying that he raped her. this is from 2019 when he was, of course, president, and in this specific statement, there has been litigation related to this, whether he had possible immunity because you may be thinking, wait. didn't we have a trial on this exact issue? yes, we did. last year tsh early last year there was a trial and a jury found that trump was liable for sexual abuse and defamation and awarded her $5 million over a claim that trump raped her in a
6:12 am
department store in the mid-90s and then defamed her. this time around, the judge said, look. we're not going to relitigate. there's bigger questions about if it happened in the department store or if she was defamed, but that verdict carries over. instead the jury will look at damages. e. jean carroll is asking for $10 million. it should only take a few days for a trial like this, but the big difference is trump wants to participate this time. last year he did not participate at all in this trial, but this time around as you noted while he's on the campaign trail, he is expected to be there today for jury selection. it's unclear how many other days he will attend. there's also a possibility he will testify, but the judge has put some restrictions and guardrails on what he can say. again, they're not relitigating what happened in the department store. instead this is just about damages, but john, i think what the former president is going to see today is this is federal court, and it's jury selection. there is no role for him.
6:13 am
there are no reporters and cameras. if he wants to get limelight today, he's likely going to have a press avail, because no cameras. very little transparency. not a lot of attention to get inside a building like this or proceeding like this. >> we just got word that e. jean carroll has arrived at these proceedings. she's there. donald trump's motorcade is there. for this campaign stop, paula reid, thank you very much. donald trump right here, right now in new york in federal court. let's go back to new hampshire, and kate bolduan is there. kate? >> it's the perfect framing, john, about how the courtroom is the campaign is talking about it that way. it really is perfect. let's also talk about the political reality that all the candidates are waking up to, facing it as they hit the trail once again. here with me is jeff zeleny, and jeff duncan, and the former
6:14 am
white house spokesperson for george bush, and most importantly a son of indiana, the most important part of your bio, pete. jeff, let's talk about nikki haley and this statement she and the campaign put out this morning suggesting she's no longer interested in debating ron desantis at all. her next debate is either going to be against donald trump or joe biden is what she says. she's really trying to make this a two-person race. >> she definitely is, and she said that last night in her speech in iowa. sounded like she was kgiving th same speech if she won second place, and she didn't. she said, it's a two-person race. it's something chris sununu said for a long time, it's a two-person race. it's still not quite. the governor of florida is in south carolina today. so it's a three-person race. we'll see. i mean, i guess it makes some sense for her not to engage in desantis in terms of debatiing
6:15 am
but one question i have is the main tv station in new hampshire, it's a tradition. maybe traditions don't matter anymore like i'm used to, but we'll see if she gets any blowback. she's trying to look forward and look at her electability argument with president biden. >> lieutenant governor, what do you think of this move as a campaign tactic if you will? saying basically essentially, i'm no longer in standing on a debate stage with ron desantis? i'm looking past him. what do you think in announcing it this morning? >> she's certainly posturing with strength. she started in her speech last night, you know, she spoke as if she finished in second place, and honestly, i think everyone would admit she has the best chance to beat donald trump in this primary process. last night it got a lot more difficult. things have got to line up, and one of the things plaguing her campaign, and there's nothing she can do about it is joe biden's numbers continue to be so bad that republicans that are sitting on the fence about donald trump don't feel any threat that joe biden is going
6:16 am
to beat donald trump. if those numbers were tighter, i think we would have seen a different outcome, but this perfect storm off republican island is continuing to form again. the most morally corrupt of bankrupt individual. if any other candidate in any other race was showing up at a courthouse for what donald trump is showing up for today, they would be plummeting in the polls by the minute. >> and it's not the reality of what we're looking at. pete, can you manifest a two-person race? i'm fascinated by the move by nikki haley this morning. >> well, we've heard all sorts of great one-liners coming out of iowa and new hampshire over the years. remember bill clinton, the come back kid? they tried to spin and spin and spin to build a narrative that is good for them, but this is not a two-person race. it's not a three-person race. maybe on paper, but in reality, it's a one-person race. will be charitable. until we get through new hampshire and south carolina,
6:17 am
but it's fair to say donald trump is the presumptive nominee. as john berman pointed out earlier, he blew everyone away. he set records in iowa yesterday. no other candidate -- republican candidate has ever gotten over 50% of the vote. the biggest emermargin of victo ever. he normally doesn't get independents, women, college graduates. he won them all. nikki haley is saying what she needs to say to justify a couple more weeks in the race, but it's only going to be that, a couple more weeks. >> rough assessment, pete. rough assessment for sure. one thing to bring everyone in. one thing you and i were talking about as we were flying over here overnight is your final notes and your biggest takeaways from last night and not only seeing the caucuses play out, be you in the messaging and the narrative and the story that the candidates wanted to leave iowa with, essentially forgetting
6:18 am
iowa and jumping straight into new hampshire and beyond. what was your biggest final note from last night? >> we heard it in her speech last night, in nikki haley's speech last night saying she's the only one who can sort of save republicans from the trumptr trump/biden nightmare and then we woke up this morning and saw that ad on television this morning. for the first time it seems like she's trying to play to win and trying to win over those independent voters here in new hampshire. as pete was saying here, the ma math is so difficult for her going forward. what some candidates want to do obviously is collect delegates. there's never been a race, criminal trials, et cetera. she's trying to collect delegates as well for that convention in wisconsin, and see if that would ever even matter. >> there's so many ifs still. lieutenant governor, ron desantis -- answer this question for me. ron desantis has woke n up this morning thinking what? >> i think he's wishing he was better at math at this point. it gets really tough.
6:19 am
i will applaud him for coming in second place. he spent a lot of money and time and effort in iowa, but now the math in front of him is really, really tough. you walk into new hampshire where his numbers are at best, 5%, and you walk into south carolina where he'll finish a distant third or further. you know, this is a tough situation for ron desantis and i think it's going to be tough for him to raise money and do the things he needs to do. this is what we saw coming months ago when we said, we have to have a consolidated effort. if we're going to beat donald trump, we've got to come with one voice and this is what happens. we've forgot for a period of time that was important and now we've got a splintered, fractured, you know, party like we've never seen before, and it's going to be tough to beat donald trump, and certainly going to be tough to beat joe biden with donald trump. >> i mean, put it in perspective, pete. what really happened last night? and what it means for today. the only way trump could have done better last night would have been what? >> to be unopposed.
6:20 am
i don't think there's any way he could have done better. it cannot be understated. how big a boost it was for donald trump. i think it shows that retail campaigning isn't what uit used to be. these races are nationalized and driven by what people see online and on tv. donald trump made the fewest number of sotops in iowa and he went to all 99 counties. so did vivek ramaswamy. in this trump era, it's very, very different how they campaign, and it also says that republicans aren't done with donald trump. they weren't looking for trump with less baggage. they were looking for trump with more baggage, and every time he's indicted, every time people take shots at him, we become more stubborn mules and we cling even harder. >> i'm really interested to see what that all looks like though as we focus on a very different electorate here in new hampshire. great to see you, pete, jeff,
6:21 am
and geoff. thank you both. still ahead for us, donald trump, the winner of the iowa caucuses as we were just discussing, and john's going to talk more about in a new york courtroom -- a courthouse, where a jury will be picked to determine how much he will have to pay for comments he made denying he sexually assaulted e. jean carroll. we will be back.
6:22 am
6:23 am
6:24 am
6:25 am
happening now, donald trump has arrived at a federal court in new york. this is a campaign stop for his trial to determine damages for defaming e. jean carroll. cnn's kara scannell with the latest outside there in new york. >> reporter: donald trump has arrived and so has e. jean carroll. this is the first time they've seen each other in years.
6:26 am
they will be sitting down in the courtroom momentarily. this kicks off just a few moments from now. also, donald trump will have the opportunity to look at the jurors as they're being asked questions and getting qualified for this process. now this judge moves pretty quickly and we'll have this jury seated by the end of this morning and we could have opening statements this afternoon. e. jean carroll's team will go first. then donald trump's, and as we know, that this trial is not about finding defamation. the judge has ruled on an earlier verdict that donald trump defamed e. jean carroll, but the question here is damages. how much money donald trump may have to pay carroll for defaming her. she is seeking $10 million in damages because of the statements donald trump made days after the verdict at a town hall. she wants there to be punitive damages that she should have to pay that the jury found to be defa defamatory. the big question here, donald trump, will he testify in this case? e. jean carroll is expected to
6:27 am
take the stand. donald trump's attorneys say that he wants to testify. the judge has made rulings ahead of the trial saying that no witnesses can talk about the actual sexual assault or defamation. donald trump isn't allowed to say he didn't assault carroll or he didn't know her or never attacked her. what will donald trump be able to testify when he takes the stand in his lawyers say that they want him to be able to talk about his state of mind. that will be a decision the judge will make when the time comes. we expect jury selection to begin shortly and then opening statements this afternoon. john? >> as you said, this can move quickly. kara, keep us posted. with me, paula reid and jeremy solan, former manhattan prosecutor. donald trump wants to testify. if that happens, it won't happen today. there are no cameras in the courtroom. what's he doing there? >> he's trying to amplify this idea that he's a victim of
6:28 am
political persiecutions, right? only because they want to interfere with the election. that's why we saw him show up to oral arguments in federal court last week in washington and to his civil case here in new york, but what's different about today is it's unclear he's going to get a rueturn on his investment of time wbecause there are no cameras and no role for his during jury selection or if they get to opening statements. this is very different than what we saw late last week where we heard from him four times in one day. he talked to cameras on the way into court. he spoke in court, spoke on his way out and in a press conference. if he wants to talk to his supporters or amplify his message, it's most likely he'll have to hold a private press event. federal court, totally different animal. >> we haven't got word yet he's doing that. we'll have to wait and see. jeremy, as kara and paula have
6:29 am
both reported, donald trump's legal team claims he wants to testify here. the judge would pull limitation on that. explain potentially what he could say. >> what he could say is what i will expect him to say. he will take every avenue to say what he should not, meaning -- or use it as a stomping ground for a win politically. he will try to say what he should not. again, which is i don't know this woman. this was a hoax. i didn't sexually assault her. i wasn't found responsible for raping her. he's not going to want to speak about his money and what potential damages could be. will he try to speak to his state of mind? will he try to limit his financial exposure? absolutely, but the script that donald trump has to keep and likes to keep is not what the court wants to contain from the four corners of the courtroom. >> how long of a leash would a federal judge give him on the witness stand? >> far less than the attorney
6:30 am
general in the new york's lcivi case. that will be shut down quickly. his counsel's already said, and voiced that ground for appeal which is you're already limiting my client's ability to defend himself out of the gate if you adhere to what the plaintiff's attorney wants and what he said to limit him, but, you know, he's going to have to try to keep it to what his state of mind was, which may be reasonable, and what his dollars are, but the defamatory issue is over. >> i saw you nodding at the no-leash thing right there. >> not only is this a different environment. this is a very different judge, and i think what we saw in the civil case, the judge there, you know, he kind of entertained cameras. he allowed the top. he understood access and kind of played to the cameras, joked a little. there are no questions an whether that was even appropriate. he knew what he was going to get as soon as he stood up to address the court. he let him go on for a little while, but federal court is different. these judges, they don't fight.
6:31 am
they don't engage in antics, and if you blow past them, they are going to cut you off and potentially drag you out of court. you could argue that would feed into the larger narrative. maybe that's the three-dimensional chess they're playing here, but there's no role. no camera. will he get a return on his investment more so than going to new hampshire or the border? we'll see. >> the only prism to look at this is through the campaign prism. >> thank you both. so in new hampshire, the other candidates, all of them, headed there. what has happened in the last few minutes since we last heard from kate bolduauan? back on ththe ground i in new hahampshire momoments fromom no.
6:32 am
6:33 am
6:34 am
6:35 am
6:36 am
we are live in manchester, new hampshire. the next stop in the republican presidential primary, and the next big test for ron desantis and nikki haley after their second and third place finishes behind donald trump in iowa. nikki haley arrived in new hampshire overnight. she's focused a huge amount of time and resources here in recent months. she spent the most of any of the candidates, $28.6 million in advertising here since the start of last year. haley's message heading here today that the iowa caucuses have now made this a race between her and donald trump, even after she finished third in iowa behind ron desantis. gary tuchman, we watched this unfold, and some of these people, nikki haley supporters. watch this. >> i thought she would be a
6:37 am
close second to donald trump, but i did not envision her losing by that much. disappointed in the results. >> how do you feel? sgl >> i'm optimistic with tonight considering how much time and munroe ron desantis. i think she fared really well and she's coming to new hampshire where she'll do very, very well. >> if donald trump is nominee of the republican party, are you all prepared to vote for donald trump? >> absolutely. >> yes. >> anyone not definitive about voting for donald trump? >> not definitive. >> very interesting, right? joining me right now is the author of st"stormy weather," professor of political science at the university of new hampshire, dante scala. we'll get your take from what we heard from voters right there. the headline from nikki haley suggesting that she may not be at this abc wmur debate on
6:38 am
thursday make it and saying she's essentially suggesting she's looking past ron desantis, not interested in debating him any longer. how will people read that here, take that here? >> it's a risky move because so much about nikki haley's campaign has been she does things the new hampshire way. she doesn't do big rallies and she does town hall meetings and meets voters and so forth. the debate before the primary is such a big tradition in new hampshire. i can't help but think there could be a little bit of blowback toward her if she skips it. >> it is a -- it's definitely a choice, especially when they're announcing it the administration she's hitting the ground once again in new hampshire after the iowa caucuses, and speaking of the last debate before the primary, new hampshire voters traditionally, historically, they break away. i'm wondering what you think, if anything, as we heard those new
6:39 am
hampshire voters speak with gary tuchman, who voters are taking out of iowa from the results. >> what they're taking out of iowa is this growing feeling that donald trump is inevitably going to be the nominee of the republican party, and what nikki haley wanted to get out of last night in iowa was to give new hampshire voters a reason to believe, a reason to reset what they were thinking about how things were going to turn out. things didn't quite work out that well, and -- >> do you think -- you could almost argue it both ways, right? there's a sense of inevitability, so you could along with those new hampshire voters who said, if it was donald trump, would you in the end vote for donald trump? most of them saying yes, so why not? or do new hampshire voters want make up their own minds? which new hampshire voters do, and they take that opportunity to reset, and nikki haley got
6:40 am
blowback and saying, new hampshire voters get to correct what iowa did. >> he's trying to reach out this week to two groups of voters. she's trying to reach out to independents, even those who lean democratic, to join in. jump in the pool and vote maybe against donald trump. at the same time, talk to new hampshire republicans and say, hey. i'm perfectly acceptable as the nominee. can you deliver both messages at the same time to two very distinct groups of voters? that's the challenge ahead of her over the next seven day. >> let me then play a little bit of the new ad that nikki haley's campaign put out this morning. it mirrors her final message as she was leaving iowa last night that she wants to -- her candidacy is to help in her words, stop the trump -- another trump tr trump/biden nightmare. let's watch this. >> the two most disliked politicians in america, trump and biden. both are consumed by chaos, negativity, and grievances of the past. the better choice for a better
6:41 am
america? nikki haley. >> i have a different style and approach. i'll fix our economy, close our border, and strengthen the cause of freedom. we need a ynew generation of conservative leader to get it done. i'm nikki haley, and i approve this message. >> what is she leaning into here as it relates to iowa? do you think it could be effective? >> it could work. she's been slowly, but surely reaching this point where she makes a more explicit message against donald trump, and here she's kind of trying to be -- tread the middle, and there's been so much about her campaign is trying not to offend, bring people together and saying biden and trump are two of a kind. is that a way for her to become a crossover candidate who can build a coalition here? >> yeah. i mean, is this the -- as direction she's taking on donald trump, we will see because she's definitely not going nearly as hard as we saw from chris
6:42 am
christie when he was still running. that's for sure. >> right, absolutely, and so with chris christie, the lesson there was you can go too far. nikki haley's question is, has she gone far enough to persuade voters that she could be the alternative? >> yeah. where is that sweet spot? we'll see. it's great to see you, dante. thank you so much for coming in. >> you too. >> john? >> i think i first talked to dante scala in 1996. he's awesome at new hampshire. great to hear from him. >> both of you have never been smarter or looked younger. major developments overnight. iran launches ballistic missiles at noren thern iraq. what's going on here not far from where u.s. troops are located?
6:43 am
6:44 am
6:45 am
6:46 am
6:47 am
new this morning, we're seeing new images of an iranian air strike inside iraq. now iran claims it was going after a spy base they say was being used by israel's spy agency. they say it was in northern iraq. iran also says it fired ballistic missiles at what it called a terrorist headquarters in northern syria, and there were other strikes in syria as well. these were the strikes in the iraqi kyrgyzstan region. with me now, cedric layton. i glossed over what i think is the most significant part there. iran says it conducted air strikes. we're not talking about proxies or hezbollah or houthis. we're talking about iran that did this. how significant is this? >> that's huge.
6:48 am
john, good morning to you. the big thing here is that the iranians themselves are in essence taking the veil off and they're going in and making these not only declarations, but they're actually taking action, and they're admitting to it. so those are two main factors in this particular case. there were a lot of reports as this was going on that some u.s. facilities might have been hit like the consulate. it did not, but it was one of those things that really points to the fact that the tinderbox that is the middle east is definitely going into a slow burn right now. >> why is that a line for them? they're willing to attack what they claim is a base in northern iraq, but apparently not u.s. facilities. >> yeah. so they see the israelis as being more active against them
6:49 am
fromm an intelligence operation perspective, and we have reports over the years of other israeli intelligence agencies going out and taking out iranian nuclear scientists and iranian military leaders. so this is the response that iran has developed to go after them, and one of the key things here is one of the reports indicates that they went after a moussad safehouse, and that's from an iranian source who cracked under pressure probably under interrogation. >> this is iran claiming it did it itself, not some proxy. i want to ask you about developments taking place in ukraine right now, specifically in the sea of azov. the ukrainians say they have downed two russian communications aircraft. this is a picture. you can see the damage that was done to the tail of that aircraft and the other one looks
6:50 am
even more high-tech. it's the a-50. this was used to monitor targets and as i said, communication. what's the significance if ukraine did take out these two russian planes, cedric? >> so, john, this is really big because the mainstay, the a-50 that you're showing right there is very much analogous to the plane. the reason for a plane to even have that kind of an aircraft is to have command and control that you can exercise it over a large sector much more so than you would be able to do just from the ground, and because of the radar capability or in this case the, a-50's capability, it can seen beyond the horizon. it can allow for commanders to decide not only the air picture or the maritime picture, but in many cases also, elements of the ground picture as well, and it allows for the russians to move into positions that they otherwise wouldn't be able to see or discern from this kind of

a vantage point, so taking out one of these assets is a critical area. this is one of those high-value airborne assets that the u.s. air force would spend a lot of time protecting. and the fact that they weren't i7bd kates there were not a number of air force assets. >> and this is to project your air power overseas. thank you, colonel cedric leighton. so he is accused of killing four people, but the new informrmation agaiainst the sus inin t the seriaial kikiller of beach murdrders. to duckduckgo on all your devie

because we have known from almost the beginning that moreen baynard barnes who was found on gilgo beach very close in proximity to the other three who has been charged with, authorities said that he was a prime suspect with her murder, but not until moments ago that the indictment is unsealed that he is now charged with second degree intent to murder marie baynard barnes. let me tell you about her. she was 25 years old and a sex worker as the others were as well. she was last seen in 2007, and one, when she was still alive there was still communication with a burner phone that authorities believe was traced to heuermann and her cell phone and in june, she was never seen again after that, but days thaf,

her own cell phone was used, and her family didn't have it, and someone was calling her voice mail to check voice messages. well after that, the investigation went cold, but in 2010 when her remains were found in close proximities when the others were found, too, she was restrained with three different belts and there was one hair on a belt. and when they finally started testing it, once the investigation was reopened in 2022, there was damage to the hair. so they could not determine whose hair it was and it had to go in for more sophisticated testing, but now through the testing it was alisa heuermann's hair, and her hair was found on virtually all of the victims, but she was out of town for the other three when it is believed that they were murdered but now they have credit card receipts
6:58 am
that in 2007 she was in atlantic city with her family for two weeks when it is believed that the murder happened. there are other things in the 16-page indictment that he, before she went missing he got shredding device for the computer and apparently, it didn't work, but the issue is now bail, because this is someone who is now charged with four counts of murder. the prosecution of course requesting no bail. >> jean casarez, these are important and major developments throughout the morning. so for the first time in more than a decade, donald trump is in the same room as the whom has accusese himim as sex yule assasault and isis why is this fifirst campaiaign stop afafter iowa caucucuses.
