welcome to our viewers joining us here in the united states, i am michael holmes and we are counting down the hours to the new hampshire primary, with u.s. president donald trump has now one less opponent in the race for the republican nomination, that is after florida governor ron desantis suspended his campaign for president on sunday and at one point he was considered the greatest threat to trump in securing the republican nomination. please if there was anything i could do to produce a favorable outcome, more campaign stops, more interviews i would do it. i can't ask our supporters to volunteer their time and donate their resources we don't have a clear path to victory accordingly i am today suspending my campaign. >> reporter: now the republican race is down to two main
9:17 pm
candidates, donald trump and former south alanna governor nikki haley. desantis has thrown his support behind trump that trump says he is looking forward to working with the florida governor meanwhile, nikki haley is using a moment to rally support for the fight ahead. >> ron ran a great race, and we wish him well. having said that, it is now one fella and one lady left. please cnn's has more on desantis's surprise announcement, as well as trump's reaction to his sudden endorsement >> just hours after florida governor ron desantis suspended his presidential campaign and endorsed the former president, trump came out on stage in rochester, new hampshire and congratulated him for running what he called a great campaign he also said that desantis was being, quote, gracious for
9:18 pm
giving him his endorsement. take a listen to how donald trump put it. clearly before we begin i would like to take time to congratulate ron desantis. and, of course, a really terrific person, i have gotten to know his wife, casey, for having run a grant great campaign for president. he ran a really good campaign, i will tell you it is not easy. they think it is easy doing this stuff, right? it's not easy. but as you know, he left the campaign trail today at 3:00 p.m.. and in so doing he was very gracious that he endorsed me. so i appreciate that. i appreciate that, and i also look forward to working with ron and everybody else to defeat crooked joe biden. >> what a difference just a few hours make. this is a complete 180 from the type of rhetoric we heard donald trump use just this weekend in manchester, new hampshire on saturday trump was
9:19 pm
criticizing ron desantis and this is also the first time, i want to note, that he is actually referred to the florida governor by his real name instead of the nickname that he has given the florida governor, which is ron the sanctimonious. but i think one thing we should be watching for is whether or not this endorsement from desantis changes anything in the mind of donald trump already it appears it has given the language we heard him use on sunday but donald trump is really efficiently gone after ron desantis attacked very heavily in the lead up part of that was they were worried about the rival and donald trump very much believes that desantis was being disloyal by running for president after trump had endorsed him for florida governor in 2017. in that were was were a lot of those attacks stem from. i
9:20 pm
think the question is now, will his endorsement change the game. will you see ron desantis become a potential surrogate for the trump campaign i know, as well, from our conversations with trump's team that as of now, there are no plans for desantis to show up on the trail with them but again, that could change. cnn, rochester, new hampshire. a cnn political commentator and republican strategist. she joins me now. good to see you, alice. desantis out but let's face it, he was pulling 6% in new hampshire, he was running out of money, that had been defecting so i don't think we can save the decision is wholly unexpected but how do you think it is going to impact the race? >> will have a big impact, michael, new hampshire and as far as how it impacts the race after that remains to be seen i don't think very much. and here is why, desantis came into this race, he had tremendous amounts of money, he
9:21 pm
had tremendous amounts of expectations, he had a solid name i.d. and quite frankly, he was central casting for presidential candidate in terms of the hopes and the optics of the family and the kids. but the problem was, it was not a very well run campaign, it was run by an outside political action committee, there was tension between his current staff as governor and the incoming staff on the presidential campaign. that created a great deal of trouble. i can tell you, you will have to be on the same page from the very beginning or the wheels start to fall off, and they did. and they started to get a handle on things and it was just too little too late. look, he wasn't living up to the expectations they had with him donald trump, as we know, last weekend in iowa, had a resounding victory there. and really stepped this tone
9:22 pm
for the fact that republicans are willing to listen to donald trump and give him a second chance. the question now is how will this impact nikki haley? look, i think her strong third- place showing in iowa puts her in a good spot here in new hampshire. she has tremendous wind in her sales here in new hampshire. her image of being a more moderate candidate is representative and appealing to the people here in new hampshire. i think she will do well here. the polls, are cnn polls have donald trump around 50%, her around 36 and desantis was at six. i think she can bridge the gap in the next couple of days. but how that will impact after new hampshire? i don't see it changing the ultimate endgame, which is probably donald trump. >> tactically, haley has become , i am hesitant to use the word aggressive but a little bit, she is attacking trump a little bit. she is challenging him selectively, if you like. talk about age and so on, memory. cognitive ability. but not on things like criminal
9:23 pm
charges, the trials he is in the middle of, not even how, let's face it, racially tinged comments about her name. she steams to stop short, does she now need to go all out to differentiate herself donald trump? >> i think she does. i have been saying all along that all the candidates need to go through donald trump to get to joe biden, which is the goal of the gop nominee. and she has done subtle lobs at donald trump she certainly hit him from the very beginning in these debates with regard to how he impacted the debt, certainly with his tone and tenor and continuously saying that chaos and drama follows donald trump, that she would bring a more optimistic, young, fresh generation of leadership. but she has, to your point, she has always stop short of being too critical of the countless charges against him. and in large part, michael, because many republicans look at all of these charges against
9:24 pm
donald trump as, they view this as weaponization of the doj and liberal justices and prosecutors going against donald trump because they see him as a big threat to joe biden and she has been singing off of that playbook. here today she came out after he heard news that desantis got out and she basically said donald trump is too old and she said that she loves him and with joe biden. he says he is just as problematic as joe biden in terms of we don't need an 80- year-old president and it is time for young, fresh leadership. >> alice, good to see you, they are in new hampshire for us with the voting will begin on tuesday. thanks so much. >> thanks, michael. still ahead on the program, protesters gathered near the israeli prime minister's home to demand a hostage deal, we will have his response when we come back also, ukraine strikes a russian oil facility what this could mean for russian troops, also when we come babac

pressure is mounting on is really prime minister to strike a deal with hamas to free the remaining hostages in gaza. families and friends of the hostages held a rally near his home in jerusalem on sunday. again calling for their release. >> after 107 days, we are demanding that they fix the failure from the seventh and that can only start with returning all of the hostages alive. bringing home 136 hostages and bags can never be considered any part of a victory.
9:29 pm
cletus comes as a report in the wall street journal says the u.s., egypt, and qatar want israel to join a new phase of talks with hamas that would start with releasing hostages and lead to israeli forces with growing completely from gaza. netanyahu says he is working on it, quote, around-the-clock but he is also out right rejecting hamas's demands. >> translator: i categorically reject the conditions of capitulation to the hamas monsters in exchange for the release of our hostages, hamas demands and into the war, the withdrawal of our forces from gaza, the release of all murderers and and the continued loss of power. if we accept this, our soldiers have fallen in vain. is cnn political and global affairs analyst and also part politics and foreign politics reporter. let's talk about
9:30 pm
netanyahu, always called himself the security prime minister. but it was interesting, i was reading the number of people killed in israel in 2023 was the highest in 50 years. how fraught is netanyahu security right now given all that is going on? >> reporter: i think netanyahu is, one of his weakest points politically since he started er three decades ago. all that was published on sunday from channel 13 in israel showed that 53% of israelis that netanyahu is mostly thinking about his own personal interest and not about the interest of the country. his party was one of his weakest points in the polls. i think he got 15 seats for 16 seats, which is half of what it has today and his coalition right now only gets 45 seats,
9:31 pm
which is 19 less than it has today so i think that netanyahu is in a very weak spot. >> how has the hostage situation specifically, the lack of more releases hurt him on the israeli side? >> i'm not sure it hurt him, at least not in the immediate term. just another point from that, only 35% of israelis prefer doing a deal right now, if it means to stop the war and release all the palestinian prisoners in israeli prisons. i think that when it comes to public opinion and the hostage issue, netanyahu is still sort of in a good place. but you see how every day there is more and more protests among the hostage, the families of the hostages and it grows slowly but surely within the israeli public.
9:32 pm
clear their speculation that netanyahu's position on two state solution or more accurately, no two state solution is actually part of a political plan and you were talking about how he is out for himself or it seems that way. because he is so unpopular for his handling of the war and what led up to october 7th, it is part of a political plan to pivot to a message of all stop a palestinian state, i stood up to u.s. and the west rather than judged on his marriage. what you think about that theory? >> well first i have to say i think that what matters to most israelis these days is not whether netanyahu will stop the palestinian state or support the palestinian state, between 70 to 80% of israelis want netanyahu to resign, regardless of his position on the two state solution. so i think i'm not sure this campaign will work. he tried it. he tried sort of a similar
9:33 pm
campaign after the beginning of the work when he said that everything that happened in gaza is a result of the onslaught from 30 years ago the israeli public did not buy it. i'm not sure it will buy the whole two state solution thing or his opposition to the two state solution and honestly i think that when netanyahu lied so many times about his position of the two state solution, i am not sure why anybody would even take seriously whatever he has to say on this issue. >> he continues to argue, this is no time for talk of elections , it is time for unity, we are at a time of four and so on which normally resonates in israel, that unity argument during a time of conflict but what does the public think of that argument this time around? >> well i think while the israeli people, like i think in every country, once to have as
9:34 pm
much unity as possible. again, the majority of israelis want him to resign. some of them want him to resign now, some of them want him to resign after the war ends. but every day that passes, i think just convinces more and more israelis for the need for an election, just last saturday we saw, for the first time, a demonstration in tel aviv with something like 10,000 people calling for election. this is something we haven't seen since the beginning of the war, so i think we see those things popping up more and more and as time passes, the netanyahu situation will not get any better. >>, reports of tents being set up outside his house, i'm going to leave it there, unfortunately. but good to see you, thanks so much please thank you. lebanon national news agency said one person was killed, five others injured in the israeli drone strike on

rejoining to the top story this hour, former south carolina governor nikki haley is now the last republican candidate standing against former president donald trump. after florida governor ron desantis suspended his 2024 for the white house. that announcement coming ahead of tuesday's crucial new hampshire primary desantis endorsed trump as he dropped out of the race. his departure, after his second place finish in the iowa caucuses last week. trump has reacted, saying desantis ran, quote, a really good campaign. meanwhile, president joe biden's campaign is closely monitoring the republican contest as they inched closer to a possible one-on-one with former president donald trump. here is kevin liptak with that. >> reporter: ron desantis's decision to drop out of the republican contest didn't come as much of a surprise to president biden's campaign
9:47 pm
advisers, but it certainly does bring them closer to this one- on-one contest with the former president, donald trump in fact, in their statement on sunday, democrats didn't really go after desantis much. in particular they were much more focused on president trump, saying that the sentence was the latest member of the republican party to fall in line behind the original maga brand and that he had pinned his entire campaigns hopes on the same extreme maga agenda for both donald trump and nikki haley are still running on. at the end of the day, president biden's team really do you trump as the most likely republican nominee. of course, polls bear that out. and they have long looked past ron desantis and his fellow republican candidates to the general election to this contest with president trump. and they are very eager for this to become a one-on-one contest. they do have internal research that shows any undecided voters just don't believe that president trump will become the
9:48 pm
republican nominee. and until that happens, it is very hard for them to make this choice argument, this contrast argument when it comes to president biden they are very eager to do that. it is much harder to do when it is just president biden and a republican candidate. they ink it would be much easier to get voters engaged in to make their own argument for president by doing this president trump as the least likely nominee, you will see president trump and kamala harris really ramping up their campaign activity. they will appear at their first joint appearance and of the virginia trying to counter programs. their focus there, and over the next several days will be on reproductive rights on abortion. this has pegged the anniversary of the original roe versus wade supreme court decision, and when you hear president biden do is make the argument that president trump is as much
9:49 pm
responsible for the overturning of roe versus wade through his three supreme court nominations as anyone else. in fact, that is an argument that president trump has made himself on the campaign trail. certainly president biden's team believe this is a galvanizing issue for voters and something that will help turn out voters come next year's election. cnn, traveling with president biden in delaware. now with desantis out of the race, the latest cnn polling shows trump has now widened his lead in new hampshire over nikki haley. now gary tuchman's book to voters in the granite state ahead of tuesday's republican primary >> we came to downtown portsmouth, new hampshire with two specific questions for people who plan to vote in tuesday's republican primary. both questions that were asked at cnn's interest paul to iowa. the first. the question that was asked is donald trump it for the presidency if convicted of a
9:50 pm
crime? 65% of the republican said yes, he is good for the presidency. almost two thirds. how do you feel about that? is he good if he is convicted? >> i do feel as though he is still fit to be president of the united states, yes. please so if you still found guilty will still vote for him? yes, so this man told us he is voted for nikki haley feels much differently. >> if he is considered a crime i don't think he should be the president. >> he says he hasn't decided who he will vote for but he does say he does like to. >> is donald trump fit for the presidency if he is convicted of a crime? i would say yes because i don't think that is any legitimate things that they are charging him for. >> why is that? >> what are they charging him for? it is all crap stuff that biden wants him out. >> we told him there is no evidence whatsoever that president biden is behind any of this but hank is sticking with what he believes. >> so biden is
9:51 pm
>> yeah. >> uses biden's fault. remake there is the second question, also showing nearly two thirds of iowa caucus goers with trump. >> you're voting for donald trump. the question for you is do you think joe biden legitimately won the election in 2020? >> yes. >> reporter: he says he's probably voting for ron desantis. >> do you think joe biden legitimately won in 2020? >> yeah. i do. >> reporter: mary lou carr is voting for haley. >> do you think joe biden ones legitimately in 2020? >> yes, i do. >> reporter: do you think joe biden legitimately won the election in 2020? >> i do. as a body donald trump keeps saying that's not the case. >> it doesn't bother me, i expect that from him. >> reporter: he is a trump supporter who is pretty much all in. >> there was not a lot of finagling going on, no doubt
9:52 pm
about it, whether it caused him to win, i don't know. >> what kind of finagling? >> just with the voters. stealing of ballots, i think. hearing things about trucks carrying ballots from here to here. >> you're talking about hearing about these things. and seeing, but there's no evidence of that. it's something that donald trump keeps talking about ensign but there's no evidence of any widespread fraud. but yet you believe there was. >> i really do, yeah. >> reporter: what happens of donald trump ends appearing one or more guilty verdicts? this was not a lonely sentiment. >> if he's convicted of one of these crimes which could result in present time, would you still vote for her for president? >> i would. >> you think it's possible that donald trump is just making things up a he's dunking you? you know what that means? tricking you. >> no. he's not. >> reporter: gary tuchman, cnn,

portsmouth, new hampshire. turning now to the brutal weather in the u.s. that's cost a growing number of people their lives. at least 82 people in 13 states are now reported dead following back to back winter storms through the second week of january. the number increased sunday after both tennessee and mississippi reported additional weather-related deaths. transportation department from several states are urging travelers to delay their commutes, altogether on monday. that's as freezing rain could create icy conditions overnight, in the south and in the planes. cnn meteorologist alisa with more on that now. >> we still have more of that arctic air in place, still sitting in the upper midwest in the central plains for monday morning with temperatures near and below freezing for oklahoma city, little rock, and kansas
9:54 pm
city. this is important, you have moisture moving in on the next storm system, that can mean an icy start. look at the pinks flourishing as we go through the morning commute for parts of arkansas, missouri, and oklahoma city, and could linger until the afternoon on monday, that can mean slick roads through a lot of the day. all of that moisture starts to make its way to the north, maybe snow mixing in in chicago, and heavy rain as we start the week along the gulf coast as we continue to pump some of that moisture inland. here's a look at those eyes accumulations a lot of us could see up to a quarter of an inch of ice through most of missouri, back into oklahoma, northwest arkansas as well. there's a spot above little rock that could have half an inch of ice possible, that could weigh down power lines and certainly cause problems on the roads. on the warm and wet side of this, we're looking at a flood threat that will play out over the next couple of days, where we're looking at that slight risk of flooding from eastern texas across louisiana, mississippi, alabama through wednesday, several inches of rain could cause flash flooding
9:55 pm
problems. we're looking at rain totals upwards of four inches or more that could be heavy at times, and really aggravate those ground conditions and caused some flooding. all of this is being fueled by warmer air that's moving in. we start the work week five to 10 degrees above average, but by the end of the week we're looking at temperatures surging 10 to 15, 20 degrees above average even in the 70s from charlotte down to atlanta. look at how some of these temperatures are playing out, even in d.c., with highs near 40 on monday, getting into the 60s by the end of the week, atlanta nearing 70 degrees by the end of the week, but i find remarkable is some of these overnight lows can get into the 60s by the end of the week from atlanta, orlando, new orleans, a lot of these could cause records to fall as we go through this warm-up. in the nfl playoffs, the kansas city chiefs are headed to a familiar spot for them.
9:56 pm
their sixth straight afc championship game, facing the buffalo bills in new york on sunday, chiefs quarterback patrick mahomes found more playoff magic, connecting with star tight end travis kelce for two touchdowns in the game. kelsey's girlfriend, taylor swift, clearly impressed. the chiefs held a three point lead late in the fourth quarter when buffalo missed what would have been a game-tying field goal. heartbreak. chiefs win 27-24, wolf blitzer is depressed. now they'll face the baltimore ravens next sunday for the conference title, and a chance at another super bowl appearance. >> thanks for spending part of your day with me, you can follow me on x and instagram at home cnn, stick around, i'll have more news in just a moment.
