allegiance radium where the super bowl will be played in less than two weeks. big stories and many more all coming right here on cnn. president biden is pointing the finger squarely at iran in response to the drone attack that killed three american servicemembers and injured 40 others in jordan. biden says he has decided on a horse of action. he has to do thread an extremely small needle here. has to take action to force iranian product is to back down after dozens and dozens of attack on u.s. military facilities in the region. at the same time, he wants to avoid direct conflict with iran. it's a bit of an inflection point for the biden administration when it comes to the middle east. what are you hearing from the
12:03 pm
administration? >> comes at such a fragile and volatile moment in the middle east, too. confirming earlier today that he has made a decision on how exactly the u.s. is going to retaliate after the death of these three u.s. service members. of course as you can imagine, the white house has been otherwise incredibly careful to avoid telegraphing any moves that it might make in the future. we know u.s. officials have been waiting a range of options including options that could be multi-wrong, taking place in stages. the president when speaking with reporters earlier at the white house made clear that it's very clear in his mind who exactly is responsible for the attack over the weekend. take a listen. >> to hold them in -- responsible in the sense they are supplying the weapons i don't think we need a wider war in the middle east. that's not what i'm looking for. >> the top reality for the president right now is that
12:04 pm
these attacks in the past have clearly not worked to serve as a successful determines. when asked what's going to be different about these attacks, he simply said, we'll see. it's hard to overstate the different pressures that the president is facing, particularly since he has made so clear since the very beginning that he does not want to engage in another war or get the conflict currently in the middle east basically to expand into a busier -- bigger regional conflict. talking about how difficult the needle is to thread. the balance, the desire to have a forceful response but avoided bigger regional conflict. that will be a difficult task ahead for the president. >> what can you tell us about these conversations that he had with the families of these three servicemembers. >> we are just learning that the president just this morning spoke on the phone with the families of each of these three
12:05 pm
american soldiers that were killed. we are told that the president expressed gratitude to these families and sorrow, as well and promise these families that the country is going to continue honoring their work and their service. we are also learning that on friday the president is set to participate in the dignified transfer of the remains at dover air force base. this we are told is something that the president actually asked each of the three families whether they would be okay with it and they all expressed that they would be. of course we are talking about sergeant william rivers and specialist kennedy sanders. specialist breanna moffat. all three will be returning home in the coming days. their death has fundamentally changed so much in terms of the biden white house thinking about the ongoing conflict in the middle east and has really clarified what has been its take for the united states in this conflict, as well. >> certainly has things for
12:06 pm
that. let's bring in oren liebermann now from the pentagon. officials are giving updates. what have we learned? >> just a moment ago, the defense department announced that these individuals will be posthumously provided -- promoted to sergeant. joe biden is expected to defend and defense secretary austin, as well. those were a few points made before the press briefing a moment ago. if your questions, how is it that a single one way attack drone got past the defenses in 2022 leading to this attack. that's something the command is looking at on the key questions of what changes will be made. secretary-general would not say definitively that there would be updates to protection
12:07 pm
measures, but it's certainly something that central command is looking at because of the number of forces right across the middle east. many of them in smaller bases. that's a key question, as well. we learned earlier in the day on from the medevac launched to the regional center in germany. one in critical condition. they will be evaluated. the question of whether they need further treatment will be answered. we are waiting for them to arrive sometime in the next few hours. >> thank you for the very latest from the pentagon for us. >> let's get some perspective now from washington post columnist josh rogan. as for being with us. president biden says he has made a decision. on the u.s. response, would not go into detail. what do you anticipate this will look like? >> reading the tea leaves based on what president biden said, when he was indicating, it's
12:08 pm
seems as if he is backing away from the most aggressive option. if you had to guess, it would be that they've decide to attack in places like syria and iraq but not actually cross and attack inside iran here could make sense of what we know is going on. the administration now, the good news is that there's plenty of good targets. plenty of iranian backed militia men all over the reagan -- region. syria, a little more tricky. lebanon, more tricky. you will see a wide array of attack but i could be wrong. that seems to be what biden is telling us. >> what you make of this passive-aggressive policy with iran? they don't want to direct policy -- conflict with the united states. what you think it would
12:09 pm
actually take to deter iran? >> right. two things going on. can the response stop the attack? that's a mix of deterrence. killing the people trying to kill americans. one way is to scare iran into telling the proxies to stop. the other ways to kill the guys trying to kill americans. i think you need a combination of those things. more broadly the administration will have to record is that these attacks are coordinated and related to what is going on in israel and gaza. islamic resistance of iraq is expressly stating when they claim credit for these attacks but it is related to israel and gaza. in their mind, mowing the lawn of the terrorist and also finding it better solution.
12:10 pm
that would be a really big help. >> you hit on a significant point. the sort of semantics game that the administration wants to put forward. i want to say these incidents are all specifically tied to what's going on in dauzat, why is that! not acknowledge this is that of a proxy battle that has been going on even before october 7th. >> i don't think anyone is buying it anymore. i think when they say this is relating to israel and gaza, you have to take their word on that. i guess the administration does not want to do it. have to think about the policy of supporting israeli actions in gaza affecting the security of u.s. troops in other countries. that's there whether they like it or not.
12:11 pm
once they admitted, sort of acknowledging that they have to fix one to fix the other. there's no answers for either one. >> on that point, he published an op-ed arguing that polling funding from andra is inhumane and a mistake. the white house is responding to allegations that a dozen members of the agency were dissipated in the october 7th attack against israel. how do they then approach this? >> anyone who participated in acts of terror on october 7th deserves to be punished. what i am arguing is that the action before the administration took for the investigation is complete will result in less food, medicine and health supplies going to 1 million starving children in southern gaza. did not do anything wrong, you
12:12 pm
know. 13,000 u.n. employees read both of them may very well be guilty in whatever punishment they have earned. the other 12,000 employees so far i definitely did not do anything wrong. i would argue that from an organization keeping thousands of people alive is not only cruel but will have the opposite effect because it will have the opposite effect and put the burden on other entries like israel and jordan and lebanon and make it much harder solving these problems. i don't think this is the time to pull the rug out from under their safe despite the fact that these employees deserve to answer for their action. >> i want to get your take on this exclusive report and that the chinese president told
12:13 pm
president biden that beijing would not interfere in the 2024 election. biden apparently the one who brought it up in conversation. you have extensively covered him and the ccp and their aggression over the past few decades. should resident biden put any stock into those assurances? >> it is an interesting detail. great reporting. isn't that what you would expect it to say? what is it going to say? yeah, definitely going to interfere. let's remember that he has a long track record of 12 american president applied it to obama about militarizing the south china sea. lied to trump about there being no genocide. based on all of the evidence, of course already interfering in american politics and a number of ways.

right now on capitol hill, members of the house homeland security are holding it hearing to impeach homeland chief monarch us. they claim he committed high crimes and misdemeanors for his handling of the southern border. they're preparing to move ahead with a resolution today that could make him the first cabinet secretary to be impeached and 150 years. your joint life on capitol hill. we are at our five of this hearing. what's going on? >> there will be several more hours ahead. my ring, the chairman, told me just a few minutes ago he expects this could go laden to
12:20 pm
the evening. what you're seeing right now from house republicans is that they are trying to make their case for why these two articles of impeachment are needed. in their eyes, he has violated the law and why they say these are high crimes and missed demeanors. their argument is that he is defying immigration law, that he has misled congress when he said the administration had operational control of the border. what you're hearing from democrats is what you have heard from many constitutional experts, that these are not high crimes and misdemeanors. these are not rising to that level. instead they argue these are simply policy disagreements and that is not a reason to impeach someone. they expect that this will pass along party line that will take place later in the evening. it's important to point out this is not happening in a vacuum. it's happening as house republicans are reject and an emerging senate order deal that does not have legislative tech
12:21 pm
right now. we do have some details that many senate republicans have argued is the best opportunity that republicans have had in decades to make some of the changes to the border that house republicans have been saying are so essential, but bill, all of these dynamics are playing out and there's going to be a very, very narrow majority in order to get the two articles of impeachment past in the chamber. to vote margin which means they cannot lose more than two members and still get across the finish line. i asked earlier if he was confident that the votes would be there. he says they are still working through and having conversations. he says his view is that he has to do his job as the chairman and he's use that moving along in the market today to make a slim chance potentially of not passing in the house and zero chance of it actually passing in the senate.
12:22 pm
thank you so much. >> let's talk more about the impeachment effort with democratic congressman eric swallow, a member of the homeland security committee. thanks for joining us. is it clear what crime they are alleging he has committed? >> not at all. in fact, the crime is that the committee should be spending it time to come up with a deal. led by james langford, second most conservative member of the senate working with democrats and the white house to address the surge at the border. in that you hear from republicans we don't want to take the deal because of president biden. they are choosing to go with fiction rather than the fix. we want to govern. the secretary's hands are tied and most policies are changed to address the continuous

search. their hearing from former president trump exacting pressure on them. i wonder if you're hearing from public and colleagues of yours who would like to entertain this deal in the senate, especially considering biden is in a position of looking at changes to asylum that progressives don't like. >> announced just before christmas. told me on the house floor, i don't even know why we are going along with this because it only ends up helping you guys. that's been the mindset here in the house. they would rather be a solution. even the senator said we would not get this deal under president trump. this is on the chips act, the

12:25 pm
by rubio and graham who would have voted to put more agents at the board who would have earned citizenship and a pathway for the dreamers. i want the borders secured. i want a means of -- >> to the house try? there have been other issues in the past for the house has passed a bill knowing it would have a tougher road in the senate but they went ahead in the hopes that they would put some pressure on the senate to do something. >> we're trying now, the best time to take a deal is when it's in front of you. let's take that deal now. what's happened in the past does not do anything about where we are right now. i'm ready as a democrat and a barrier congressional district to sam going to support compromises to bring security to the border because i want to fix things. i want to govern.
12:26 pm
this is so many people who just want the chaos and they want to ruin. >> you may not get that is you have former president trump putting this pressure on a number of your republican colleagues in the house. what is the lesson then for the future when perhaps democrats both chambers again, what are you hoping that they do when it comes to immigration? >> collaborate and get things done. that's what people send us to do. i think president biden, with very narrow majorities through his three years of government on jobs, shift, healthcare and gun safety. he is trying to unite and get things done. the difference between chaos and confidence. the american people want confidence to win because confidence keeps us safer. >> do so much for being with us. we are looking to see what this committee does. so many americans concerned

not comment on the specifics of this cyber attack. so far today the outage has not been resolved. it's unclear as to the timeline when systems will go back to normal and county officials are asking residents one thing and that is patient. the biggest impact there have been two phone, court and tax systems. essentially putting the brakes on things like marriage licenses. in property taxes. firearm registrations. even registering a vehicle tag. residents of alton county are forced to use self-serving kiosks some of the offices in town have been closed. the chairman of the fulton county board of commissioners did comment on the ongoing situation. here is what he said. fulton county takes cyber security seriously and we place a high priority on the protection of sensitive information. at this time we are not aware of any trends or of sensitive information about citizens or employees, but we will continue

biden could get young people to turn out to vote. she does have a massive following. obviously, the so-called plot is just nonsense. i think you are encountering sort of two people here, right? there's people who believe this conspiracy theory and are spreading it and there are people who don't and are spreading it anyway to take it vantage of people who believe it. vivek ramaswamy is a good example of that. the guy who is a former presidential candidate who were the speculated that the super bowl is being rigged to make way for a biden endorsement. and this is someone who, when running for president or before running for president, condemned trump for january 6th but later claimed that the riot looked like an inside job. why would it even be surprising that taylor swift is endorsing joe biden? she supported him in the 2020 election. democrats tend to get endorsements from celebrities. it's hard to really find logic in any of this.

12:54 pm
with mutations in genes affecting sodium channels like this either feel too much pain or too little pain, so they try to harness that genetic research and create this drug. now they have created these phase three studies, and they were successful so they say they plan to file for fda approval on acute pain later this year. what i see in the study? they look at two different kinds of surgeries, and we will share the results from one. this is most commonly known as a tummy tuck surgery. they tested this drug against a placebo and also against an opioid drug, oxycodone and acetaminophen, a combination. they look at the pain reduction reported by patients taking these over the next two days, and what they found was that they obviously beat placebo, which is the top line there. but that this experiment will drug performed about as well as the opioid did. and of course, it does not come with the addiction risks and other side effects from opioid pain medication, so there is a lot of hope here for this new class of medications.
