santa barbara county, if this area was expected to get the worst of the storm, and it's actually been the best case scenario for this area. just yesterday the santa barbara county sheriff was talking about that this would be the worst and most significant storm possibly in the county's history. they were concerned about loss of life, and it actually broke apart -- the storm broke apart and headed south. that's where we're seeing a lot of damage in l.a. county and here in santa barbara county. there was isolated flooding. we saw rivers rise. in fact jerod the debris flow was coming down the area, and it was barreling into this bridge. felt like an efnlgt in fact the water level was all the way up here coming through here, but look at how much has changed. so much has changed. the water level has receded significantly even from just this morning. the water level has down significantly. of course, things are always change. they are expecting more rain in this area later this afternoon, but we did seek with some city workers who say that the

isolated flood willing has gone down, and what they were expecting to happen did not happen. if you remember back in 2018, 23 people died about 15 minutes from here in montecito due to massive mud slides so all of the evac orders, those were heated. misses all throughout the area on sunday were all closed. nobody out and about yesterday, so this area very much was concerned but so many people here walking around as sun is coming up. a lot of relief being felt here in santa barbara county. that storm broke apart, and the worst has moved south. back to you. >> showing you pick thursday from cal fire of the landslides. they are such a threat right now in other parts. good to see you. thanks so much for that update. >> a beautiful place to live, but there are always major issues when it comes to these storms. let's bring in san diego mayor todd gloria. thanks so much, sir, for joining us. can you give us a sense of
8:05 am
what's happening in san diego. a beautiful city. i've lived in california a lot of my life, but when these event happen, they can have really serious consequences. >> thank you, sara. this storm is starting to arrive in our community. it's hitting our friends to the north, but this is happening after two weeks of repeated storm events, when you just saw happened in my city two weeks ago where we had hundreds of homes flooded. those folks are still cleaning out. they experienced another storm system last thursday and another one that's predicted to continue through wednesday. we're not used to this kind of rain in san diego so this is hurting our response effort where we're trying to help those still trying to clean out. >> i know you know the tony, tony, tony song that it never rains in san diego. there's a river and rescue where
8:06 am
it shouldn't be. what is happening in san diego and what are you telling people to watch out for and how to protect themselves? >> i've issued my second evacuation warning to our low-lying and flood-appropriate areas and we've seen areas that have not have flooded flood because of the volume of rain in a short amount of time. the atmospheric rivers is something we didn't know anything about. it means an extraordinary amount of water can be dumped on a community, a very small finite part of our community so the issue is take preparations you no. do what you can to help make sure that we're prepared and that our first responders can focus on the most urgent of cases. i'm pleased to tell you sagans have followed that direction and i'm immensely great. if i'm asking them to hold with us the next few days as we get to the next storm event. >> i want to go back to the fact that you were seeing these storms there increasing. people were just cleaning out from the last time. how are they doing. how are these families doing?
8:07 am
what's happening with the area that got flooded last time? >> thank you for having. it's absolutely heartbreaking. some of the hardest things i've ever seen. people who poured their lives into the homes, palaces, places that they created for themselves and their families and they are now lost. what i've been doing for two weeks. this is a day long, week long, this is a years long recovery. were eve put out for assistance. our governor has responded for the emergency declaration. we're calling on fema to help and we need the white house to authorize the fema assistance to put their families back together. i was with some families cleaning out their kitchens and living rooms. their lives have been upended and we need to help them get back to normal. >> very expensive to try to fix these issues and all of these families, all of their stuff rufnltd i know it's hard and you're watching and letting people know what's going on. people are getting sandbags red,
8:08 am
but when the floodwaters come, they come fast and furious and they can take lives. so far i don't think we've heard of any loss of life. is that correct? >> not in my city. there have been some tragic incidents associated with the storm event. people who can't get access to medical care, people who have just been stressed out and some of our unsheltered population that bear the brunt of this, we're doing everything we can. we've cleared four miles of channels and distributed over 1 are 50,000 sound bags. have three community centers and a local assistance center that's set up in partnership with fema, our state and county partners. these all hands on deck. sara, we've been in this posture for 1 days. my team will give everything we've got until the end but quo use a break from mother nature. >> mayor todd gloria, thanks so much for joining us. thanks for letting the community know that there are lots of

things that can be done. safety is number one us a watch this storm coming through. thank you. appreciate your time. >> sara i do not know the song tony, tony, tony. ♪ it neve rains in southern california. ♪ come on, i'll pie it for you on itunes. >> thank you very much. with pea now cnn chief climate correspondent bill weir. bill, why is this happening? why is it so bad right now? >> it's a double whammy, john, both a natural and unnatural phenomenon. el nino just qualified as very strong el nino joining only three previous this strong in 50 years on top of record climate change, record ocean temperatures and all of that heat adds more moisture and energy to these storms as they come screaming across the pine ale express. imagine the mississippi river times 20 only as vapor moving through the skies, and when it hits the mountains in california, too much too fast, and it's this weather whiplash
8:10 am
now that the folks are suffering from. the mayor, this is in the our father's storm. >> you know, atmospheric river sounds so antiseptic but the way describe it not at all. >> not at all. the infrastructure was not built for these kinds of phenomenon. a lot of precious water which could be used for the mega drought has to be released out to the ocean so it doesn't drown communities. >> you've been complaining for years that california is not getting enough rain and now they are. >> right. >> well the problem is it's not falling as snow in the seer raz. that's the water tank. that's the storage. if it's cold enough for a lot of thus snowfall as snow pack, the skiers and seaboardnowboarders love it. it's too soon to see whether this will alleviate the mega drought.
8:11 am
>> can we expect more? >> the temperatures will keep going up the more fossil fuels go in the air. hopefully folks don't she as a one-off but every single storm is a lesson for how to prevent for this kind of event. a jury is talib rating in the manslaughter trial against the mother of a michigan school report. we have a reporter in the schoolhouse. a verdict could really come at any time. will she be held criminally responsible for the horrific crimes her son committed? and nikki haley raking in millions of dollars in campaign donations so what is her campaign planning on doing? manned more news from boeing and why it will cause more production delays for the company.
8:16 am
we're now entering hour two of jib deliberations in the mass murder trial of ethan crumb pleau whose son killed four students at a high school in 021. at issue is whether the mother will be held account for for her son's crimes. this is a first of its kind trial. jean casarez joins us from hive outside the courthouse. bring us up to speed. >> we know the final jury is six men and six women. they have been deliberating now for a bit of time. not a question. no questions as of yet so you
8:17 am
can tell they are really focused. they are seriously looking at all of this. you know, the judge made a point to really say in those jury instructions that there can be more than one cause of death, that even crumbley, the son, may have pulled the trigger, may have had possession of that gun. it was in his backpack. he had taken it to school that day and jennifer crumbley was miles away at her work in a real estate acquisition company, but she can be held responsible for causing the death beyond a reasonable doubt. we also know that the verdict form has four counts of involuntary manslaughter, but it goes through each count that she guilty or not guilty of involuntary manslaughter for madison baldwin or tate mear so it goes student by student, and the jury will look at that. you know, john, the judge also made a point in the jury instructions of credibility of witnesses.
8:18 am
who is the main witness in this trial? jennifer crumb plea is one of them, the only one for the defense and if the jury believes that a witness intentionally deliberately lied they can discount the whole testimony. they don't have to look tat at all. if they believe there was lie or maybe an inadvent earth lie then you disregard that but allow the rest of the testimony to stand so they are going to be looking at the credibility of all witnesses, even the dean of students that said yeah, that broc pack was pretty he have. i gave it back to ethafnlt i didn't look in it because i didn't feel hi reasonable suspicion even though there were things going on at school that the crumbleys never knew about. he was watching a video of somebody murdering about him and had drawings with violent tendencies the whole fall semester. >> jean casarez in pontiac, thanks very much. >> so we're very much waiting
8:19 am
for the jury to come out and speak. joining us now is legal affairs commentator areva martin. i know you've been following this. how much will jennifer crumb p be jennifer crumbley's testimony affect the jury? >> typically defendants don't take the witness stand out of concern that on cross-examination they may be hung up with respect to certain testimony. i think her testimony in this case will be critical, but i also think that the witnesses that were not there on her behalf are also going to weigh into how jurors think about this case. you had 21 witnesses presented by the prosecution and the defense only called one person and that was jennifer crumbley. i think some of those jurors will be asking how come there weren't other people that came
8:20 am
into court to testify to some of the things we heard about jennifer, particularly as her lawyer pride to paint this picture of her having this very, very close relationship with her son. >> that choice by the defense team of having jennifer crumbley be the only witness called to the stand, do you think that was a risk? >> reporter: oh, i think it was very much a risky decision on the part of the defense team. typically it's the opposite where you have multiple witnesses coming in to testify, and you don't have the defendant him or herself testify. i think there are multiple holes, next that were left inside. the defense tried to paint a picture that this wasn't a negligent mom, more interested in her horses and extra marital affair, that she was very involved in her son's life.
8:21 am
it would have been helpful for someone to come in an substantiate that claim by the defense. >> the fact this is a first of its kind trial, that the outcome could be precedent -- setting. in that sense does that weigh on the jury? >> it shouldn't. the jurors should do what the judge has instructed hem to do, follow the law that he has present mid this case and follow the facts. jurors really shouldn't be thinking about, well, if we decide this today, how will it impact cases in the future? that's not what they are charged to. do they should stay focused on what's before them. i think though for jurors this unthing that will impact them, you know, there are other parents on that jury. they may be thinking about if we decide to convict her what, might this mean for ourselves or our family members or other parents? jurors are human and even though judges instruct them to stay narrowly focused on the case in
8:22 am
front of them, i can't help but imagine in a case like this this they wouldn't at least be thinking about the impact on themselves or perhaps other parents that they know. >> there's always a question of what can you, should you, should not read into as the jury deliberation continues on and on. if it continues, you know, throughout the day without them coming back with questions, what should people do with that? >> well, it means they don't -- there wasn't anything that they didn't understand. questions are typically for clarification, like, you know, judge, can you read us back the transcript or the testimony of a particular witness or how should we interpret a particular, you know, jury instruction that was given. it appears they understand everything. >> thank you very much. we're standing by for anything to come out of that courthouse. sara. >> thank you, kate. one poll looking a little better for president biden.
8:23 am
another one, the approval rate not so much. we will look at the new poll that has just come out. plus, you may have heard of quiet luxry, but have you ever heard of loud budgeting? gen-z has some new trends that they are making. take a listen. >> it's not i don't have enough. it's i don't want to spend so it's like if your friend texts you i want to hang out, you say i don't want to spend gas money on coming to you to hear you talk about your ex for three hours.

a major haul for nikki haley last month as she heads towards the primary if her home state. a the campaign brought $16.5 million in new donations in january, making it her best month of fund-raising to date of the right now haley is in south carolina before heading to california tomorrow for her next fund-raising swing. cnn's eva mccann is joining me now from washington. what might this mean for her campaign and also knowing hearing strange words that he was threatening those who give money to her campaign? >> reporter: you know, sar, what this allows is for her to continue to resist the pressure campaign from the republican base to drop out. this new money, it's really age proved fund-raising pace.
8:29 am
and what they also like, what they are also touting is that a lot of this is from grass roots donations, so small dollar donors. she's also been quite business on the campaign trail. of course, this haul allows her to continue to make the case if her home state as well as perhaps on to super tuesday, and on the trail we've really been hearing her stroes south carolina voters that she doesn't think trump can win a general election. let's listen. >> you've got to acknowledge the fact that he can't win a general election so you can vote for him all day long and he can come out of this primary, but he won't win a general. >> reporter: so in recent days, we have heard haley sort of rail against the former president for spending his donations on legal fees, calling it unconscionable, and what we've also heard is that her really stress to voters
8:30 am
that he -- that all of this baggage, sara, is really a liability. she went on a fund-raising swing from new york and california last week and will go to texas to meet donors in the coming week and all of this incoming that she's getting from trump, that it's actually benefiting her, that it's helping her. i have to say from out in the state with her just the past week, folks are showing up in big numbers at these rallies. she does seem to have a lot of momentum, and a lot of folks reccoing what she is saying. they liked the former president what he did in office, but they believe she's the most competitive person to go up against joe biden. sara? >> it's interesting to watch all of this happen as we get closer and closer to the primary there and super tuesday. a lot of people wondering if she will stick around. i know you'll have the details when it comes. >> nikki haley has been very busy not just raising money. she had an interesting saturday negotiate. listen.
8:31 am
>> nicks question comes from someone who describes herself as a concerned south carolina voter. >> yes, hello. [ applause ] my question is why won't you debate nikki haley? >> oh, my god. it's her. the woman who was in charge of security on january 6th. it's nancy pelosi in are you doing okay, donald you? might need a mental competency test. >> i see that, people. >> yeah, it's what voters will say if they see you and joe on the ballot. >> i'm just curious, what would you say is the main cause of the civil war and do you think it stwarts an "s" and ends with a lavery. >> yeah, i probably should have said that the first time, and live from morning it's saturday night. >> nikki haley on "saturday night live." >> with us now meg kennard, national politics reporter.
8:32 am
we've seen politicians on "saturday night live," interesting to see her such an integral part of that opening monologue. >> hey, john, it's good to be with you. you're absolutely right. seeing presidential candidates at all different times is nothing new for "snl" but for nikki haley this appearance goes what she's been attempting to do on the campaign trail which is trolling donald trump. he says she should drop out, that he's leading her in delegates and as we see that with the elevate the language and doing things like that, taking jabs at him and highlighting some of the issues she has on the slavery issue on the cause of the civil war and that's also bringing that back in front of people which is an interesting way to do it. >> i forget where i read it this morning, i think it was the politico but they called this the yolo part of her campaign which means the kids say you only live once. how do you think it's being received?
8:33 am
is this really nikki haley unplugged, do you think? >> it may be the yolo moment, which is an interesting way to put it but what nikki healy is trying do is appeal to the people would have previously supported krump while also kind of going after the more mainstream republicans that show's used to having support from when she was running for governor the last time back in to 14. kind of a delicate balance but that's something that i'm hearing from republicans here in south carolina. it's also kind of confusing because when she's doing these things like saying the cause of the civil war wasn't necessarily slavery and then walking it back, the texas border issue, can texas secede, another one, it gives an end message of not knowing where she stands. >> in south carolina there is no party legislation so ideological republicans and democrats could vote in the primary and there's no real tradition of that
8:34 am
either, america at least in any kind of decisive way. how much can she really hang her hopes on that? >> this primary down here is not what we saw in new hampshire where independent voters have long traditions of cape of going whichever primary sues their interest. we've heard state level democrats saying when joe biden glass town the weekend before last. don't cross over and vote in the republican election. very have a democratic primary. participate in that one. it's fun to talk about and the notion that nikki haley would benefit from if those people vote for her instead of donald trump but there's not a long tradition of that here and it shouldn't play a major role on 234eb. >> if the yolo path doesn't work out for nikki heal and it truly is yolo and unplug, presumably donald trump would want nothing
8:35 am
to do with her going forward so where would that leave nikki haley in the republican in 2025 and 2026 moving forward? >> good question. there's certainly a question that she would be a vp pick for huff. i don't see that happening, and let's remember the republican party particularly has a long tradition of people running for the nomination, not making it and then coming back around in four years. nikki haley doesn't have a current office that show has to go pack to so if she does do well or at least if there's a positive perception of her whenever her time in this campaign is finished that may position her well for campaign cycles to come. she's only 52 years old and currently in our political atmosphere that is really, really young. >> meg, great to speak with you again. >> kate. >> yolo is not a campaign strategy. maybe it is. >> we'll marinate on that one. this is also ahead for us this hour. we have a first read and assessment from the white house right now on how successful those retaliatory strikes were over the weekend, and new

foreign ministry is lashing out against the united states condemning the u.s. strikes against iran-backed militias in syria, in iraq andmen. there's new reporting this morning that president biden is already approving further action. let's get over to the pentagon natasha bertrand who is standing by for us. let's start there. are you getting any indication from the administration on what that further action could be or lock like? >> well, they are really not telegraphing any of their moves, kate, understandably, because they do not want to give the iran-backed militias and iranian militants a heads-up of where exactly they are going to strike because, according to the administration, they don't want to escalate unnecessarily or kill, you know, more civilians or more people than they are actually aiming at. so they have not given us a good sense of where that action will be next or even if it's going to be some kind of kinetic action or none kiptic action, for example, a cyber attack which we were told was a responsibility as a response to that attack that killed three u.s. service

members in jordan last month. up thing we've been told is that the biden administration will attack inside iran itself. the administration has said repeatedly they do not want to go to war with iran, trying to de-escalate tensions in the region rather than escalate then. national security adviser jake sullivan did say just yesterday that this response that we saw on friday night with strikes in iraq and syria, that's only the first step of the response to come. there will be more. here's what he said. >> we are still assessing the battle damage. our centcom, central command, is looking at the capabilities we reduced and the carpalies that were incurred. the president was clear when he order them and when he conducted them that that was the beginning of the response and there will be more steps to come. >> now the question is how much can the administration actually do to degrade these groups' ability to conduct these attacks on u.s. forces for good because they have repeatedly struck u.s. and coalition bases in iraq and syria over the last several
8:43 am
months, over 160 times, and it remains to be seen whether or not they are actually be deferred by the late round of strikes, kate. >> there's still a preliminary assessment you're getting from defense officials about how successful they believe the strikes have been that started on friday. what are you picking up? >> so according to defense officials, the u.s. does believe that they successfully hit 84 out of the 85 targets inside syria and iraq that they were targeting on friday night. according to' defense official, all by one of the targets were destroyed or functionally damaged, and there is still a pro-strike analysis under way that will determine how much was fully destroyed, and how much of the capabilities have been degraded here, but one thing defense officials really wanted to emphasize which is interesting that there's no indication that any iran i don't understand themselves were actually killed in these attacks. given the administration's desire to avoid a full-scale war with iran, that's a very
