are shared by a lot of israelis, not just jewish americans like this jewish american, but a lot of israelis every aid group on the ground. so netanyahu i think missed an opportunity to acknowledge that these are legitimate concerns and denigrated these protesters. and i don't think that's good for israel or for the palestinians. just to be honest. >> josh rogin. thank you so much for bringing your perspective here to west this morning, a new hour of cnn, new central starts right now new candidate check, new campaign video as of this morning, czech new running mate standby to standby, the latest on the harrison campaign that is taking shape in the race now to define kamala harris, the candidate before the other guy does and no more mr. nice guy. >> just a week after toning it down at the republican convention bench. and after his assassination attempt, donald trump's message now to supporters, if you don't mind, i'm not going to be nice when it comes to kamala harris and a
5:01 am
former uvalde school police officer there will appear in court next hour on felony child endangerment, and abandonment charges i'm kate bolduan with john berman and sara sidner. this is cnn news central brand new this morning, the first official campaign video from vice president kamala harris calling on voters to choose quote, freedom this november today as you just heard extensively, she will sit down now with the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu, and people are looking to see if there is any space between her policy toward the war on gaza and that of president biden behind the scenes right now one of the fastest searches for vice president in modern history governor andy beshear, roy cooper, josh shapiro, tim waltz among the names being floated, senator mark kelly and transportation secretary pete buttigieg, also in the mix maybe cnn chief national affairs correspondent jeff
5:02 am
zeleny is with us now. >> geoff, you always bring the goods and you've got some new information on the timing of this vp vetting process and search hey, john, good morning. it is going to be a very accelerated process to search for a vice president here four years ago when senator kamala harris was in the running, she was waiting around four months and months to see if joe biden would call her. but we are told that she will make a decision for her own running mate in less than two weeks time. the reason is of course time is running short before the democratic convention and also running short to just get on with this campaign. but we do know that some. teams have democratic lawyers have been looking into the finances and the voting records in the personal histories of several of those candidates. let's take a look at them once again, just to kind of break down what they may bring. there are a lot of governors on that list josh shapiro from pennsylvania, of course, aid key battleground state he has been elected three
5:03 am
times in statewide office there. so he certainly is popular, roy cooper, the governor of north carolina, has a long-standing relationship with a common-law harris. they served as attorneys general together as well. and you can see the rest of the list there. the only senator on the list we believe is mark kelly, of course, he's from arizona the nasa astronaut, the former navy pilot. so look, these are the people that she is looking at. you can see the key swing states. they're all three of these candidates would be potentially helpful in the swing states but look the bottom line is she is going to pick someone who she's comfortable with, someone who can be a governing partner. and yes, the vetting is going on now, but the interview process that she does with these candidates, of course, is going to determine all of this john, former attorney general, eric holder helping lead that vetting process. >> and as a veteran of 2000 bush campaign, when dick cheney led the vetting process then ended up picking himself. i'm always curious if eric holder is in the mix. i'm leaning no, here i don't think that hold her probably make himself jeff,
5:04 am
question. we woke up this morning a whole lot of reporting this morning on the race now to define vice president kamala harris as a presidential candidate, what does the campaign itself see as the need here, particularly perhaps creating some space between her and president biden john that is going to be fascinating to watch. >> yes, there is a race to define her by all sides. you could hear that really on the lips of a former president donald trump yesterday in north carolina carolina, he's trying to define her, the harris campaign is trying to define her in that video that was released this morning, talking about a freedom, talking about reproductive rights. but one thing that will be fascinating to watch and actually comes in the public schedule of the democrats this afternoon. are those separate meetings with benjamin netanyahu, the israeli prime minister, is there going to be any daylight between vice president harris's position on these issues with president biden's position on these issues, history has shown when a vice president is running while the president is still an
5:05 am
office, there are some awkward moments sometimes think back to the clinton gore race back in, in a 2000 as you remember, well, but look, she is running as part of the administration. she's not distancing herself from it, but there are different things that she may choose to emphasize. but the race to define her in this video here, i'm just getting a glimpse of she's certainly is going to be more energetic, more viral, more memes, things like that. but there are no adds up yet from the harris side there are ads on the republican side trying to go after her record, et cetera. so that is probably the best indication how the harris campaign did not realize this was coming this week, john, there were no ads are ready to go to introduce her candidacy. i'm told but those will be coming in the coming days, but the race to define her is really the urgent matter here that all sides are trying to do really at the same time. >> jeff zeleny, great to see you. thanks so much. giving a sense of what to look forward today. appreciate it. >> and we just heard from harry
5:06 am
enten, like 19% of the population doesn't really we have an opinion of harris, so it's really important, whoever gets to shape it bill, that's being that's how it ends. that's right. >> all right. >> coming up. >> his opponent in his sights, donald trump is reverting right back to his old self on the campaign trail. in his first big rally since biden exited the race trump riled up his supporters with angry rhetoric focused of course, on vice president kamala harris calling her a liar and an ultra radical liberal, he is standing by that divisive tone here is what the former president and republican nominee said just moments ago she's a san francisco radical she's actually, i think a much worse in a way, a much worse candidates, just the most radical person, probably that we've had an office, let alone the office of the president so i'd love to be nice, but i'm dealing against real garbage wow, cnn's steve contorno joins me now. shrink that might
5:07 am
be the first time we've heard a presidential candidate call another american garbage. give us some sense. this sounds like this is the way things are going absolutely. sara and let's be clear. nice trump only lasted about 30 minutes into his convention speech. and it's certainly nice trump did not make the stage last night in north carolina instead, he was on the attack from almost the moment he took that stage. listen to what he had to say about his potential new opponent vice president harris so now they bring in this one who's worse than him she's worse than him. >> because he's a fake liberal urinate, wasn't that liberal, who is fake? >> she's a real liberal. >> she really has a real liberal. she's much worse than him. and when you're dealing with these it's people, their very dangerous people when you're dealing with them, you can't be too nice here, really can't be so if you don't mind, i'm not going to be nice. is that okay from there, he had
5:08 am
launched a litany of attacks against harris, her record tying her to the biden administration really testing out how they intend to define harris in the coming weeks. >> and as jeff said, that opportunity for the trump campaign to give their first impression of harrison the american people is now underway and a frantic sprint by the trump campaign because they know this campaign has changed dramatically in the past week. they have built a campaign to go up against an unpopular 81-year-old incumbent will now they have a much more dynamic and much more unknown opponent and vice president harris, someone who potentially could appeal to voters that joe biden was having trouble keeping in the democratic tents. and so now you are seeing the first and early attempts by the trump campaign to define harris, one of the more interesting criticisms was that he took a
5:09 am
shot at harris for not appearing in washington for the israeli prime minister's address to the congress. he actually said she's quote, totally against the jewish people. that's a remarkable statement given that her own husband is jewish and also his vice presidential nominee also did not appear at that speech either sara. but you're seeing these attacks come out there will be sharpened in the coming weeks and they will not end until november. >> all alright. steve contorno, things are going to get nasty. thank you so much. appreciate it. kate southwest airlines announcing major changes today, getting rid of it's first-come, first-serve seating what is driving this massive change for the airline got more coming up. >> a former uvalde school police officers facing a judge this morning heading to court as he's charged with a felony for his response to that horrific school massacre. and the 2024 summer olympics officially kick off tomorrow with opening ceremonies, even though some of the competitions are already underway. the length organizers are now going to keep the paris games say

5:14 am
with abacus my god, like me about watch old episodes of a practical jokers on a new network tonight attack on tbs kamala harris, his campaign for president is in full swing, no doubt still the democratic party has yet to officially choose its nominee. >> but now they have a date and a plan. august 1, just seven days from today. it's been two weeks from joe biden ending his campaign. the virtual roll call could begin. the new rules, just establish an approved by the dnc yesterday, the virtual process will be open to any candidate who gets 300 signatures from electric convention delegates with no
5:15 am
more than 50 from any single state. so you have that whoever ends up the new nominee must pick their running mate by august 7 to obvious points here. clearly no one has stepped forward to challenge kamala harris yet, for this, and harris has already secured far more delegate endorsements than the delegates required joining us right now, senior advisor to the dnc, biden-harris campaign co-chair, former senior adviser to president biden, congressman former congressman and, you know, all around good guy cedric richmond. it's good to have you here. congressman. thank you so much so you have the rules. you have the process in place. can you just cut through it and say at this point the democrats now have a date certain that kamala harris will be name the nominee yes. >> soon as that roll call is done, she will be the official nominee. and you see the exciting part is that everyone has united around her right now so she would be considered the
5:16 am
nominee in waiting and but the american people can afford for her to wait. so she's out there now, a new ad released this morning talking about her values, talking about what her vision is and talking about what this means to the american people. >> dnc has its process. republicans are calling this something else in play for you. what republican senator tom cotton said on this show, he's calling the process a coup you had nancy pelosi, barack obama, george clooney, hollywood mogul's wall street bankers all working behind closed doors to bring an bearable pressure to bear on joe biden, who in the end, through and threw in the towel and now you have the democratic party. >> you're uniting around kamala harris, who not only there's never one democratic primary, she's never won a single vote for president yet they've installed her as their nominee in congressman, i'm hearing just now that donald trump said the exact same on an
5:17 am
interview on another network, just moments ago, calling the democratic nominating process now a coup. >> what do you say to that well, that's the typical name-calling. >> let's be clear, and i want donald trump to hear it kamala harris and joe biden got 81 million votes. they beat donald trump by 7 million. they went through a nominating process where they both received 40 million democratic votes in the process and now the process is you have to get a majority of the delegates, 1,976 and she has 1,976 pledged to hurt so far she's going to have to go through the roll call and earn the democratic nomination. this is not a coronation, but i just want to be clear when you hear donald trump and his allies talk in use the words like cool, use the words like dei. they just can't help themselves when the speaker of the house has to write a memo to his caucus saying, hey guys, can we just keep the racist rhetoric in house? can we not say what we're thinking out loud? >> that's what we're going to
5:18 am
this, this republican party is a race to the bottom under donald trump and the maga extremist and we're going to be here to protect and defend our kamala harris because she is a brilliant, thoughtful, strong leader my colleague mj lee, had reported that just after biden's announcement that you unleashed on big donors who were had pulled back on giving money after biden's debate performance, that essentially said that there was they had created for you all a self-fulfilling prophecy here. one of the quotes that stuck out to me was used, you telling mj now those donors need to step the f up we've seen the fundraising numbers and there are huge, big numbers. and largely from grassroots donations. so what's your message to those big donors today? >> look, i'm so excited about the grassroots fundraising raised over $100 million in 24 hours. one 1.1 million unique donors. and the 58,000
5:19 am
volunteers that have signed up since then. so it shows the energy in the party yeah, it was i off at big donors. absolutely because what i know is that in this process, the voters drive the machine. and so now we see grassroots donors coalescing around her. and that's not to the exclusion of big donors. but the excitement is with the unique regular donor kamala harris has been with these really prime minister this afternoon. this is four days into like the most consequential week of her career. she's not face-to-face with one of the most fraught foreign policy issues facing the country. are you aware of any difference in kamala harris his position on israel from joe biden's well, i think the vice president has been very clear about her desire for peace and enduring peace but let's be
5:20 am
clear, there's only one president at a time. >> and that is going on and been policy for decades. so i won't speak for the vice president on that. i know that she is. they start believer in israel's right to defend itself i know that she is concerned about the innocent civilians that have been killed. and she has voiced all of that. so i think that she speaks for at best. but at the same time, there's only one united states president at a time. >> do you expect people to hear daylight between joe biden and kamala harris on this issue, them well, that's a decision for the vice president to make. >> the one thing i do know about the vice president is that she's not shy. she's outspoken, she strong. she thoughtful, she's brilliant. all of those things and so i think that she will make a decision on how she approaches this issue. but this is a very sensitive issue concerning national security so i would
5:21 am
imagine that she will give it some thought, but like i said, we have one president who's now trying to brokers a permanent ceasefire create enduring peace. and i don't think anyone should do anything to interfere or get in the middle of that. >> have you been asked for vp vetting materials by the campaign? >> all i can say is i want kamala harris to be the next president, united states may been on the ticket with is not one of those things that's going to happen. i will do anything for her and i'm going to work very hard in this campaign and i'm going to make sure she wins in november but it will be as a co-chair of the campaign, it will be as an advisory will be as a person knocking doors and contributing personal money. but no, won't be as a vice president cedric richmond. good to see you. thanks for coming in. >> john. >> so what is the path to 270 electoral votes for vice president harris? we've got some new polling just yet and we are standing by as a former

5:35 am
joe biden problem. so whereas harris doing where, where's harris have more support than biden had, look among black voters, she's doing eight points better than joe biden was an april and june this course, harris paul being in july. how about hispanic voters? she's doing six points better among hispanic voters. now here's the interesting thing. she's in fact not doing all that much better among white voters. she's only gained a point compared to joe biden among white voters. so she is at least at this point, looks like she is fulfilling what a lot of democrats were hoping that is bringing back together that democratic base, that diverse democratic base that joe biden seems to be lacking in, at least this time around and then talk through what sticks if this might be an important too. >> yeah. so where could this be important? >> where our hispanic voters and black voters, a large portion of the population in those key swing states, while it's in the sunbelt, right? let's look among black voters, nationally, they make up about 12% in north carolina. look at this, this of course, is where donald trump was yesterday. they make up 21% of the vote about in georgia, 34%, of course the hispanic vote very
5:36 am
important to southwest, right nationally hispanic voters only make up 10% of all voters. but look in arizona, 21%, nevada, 19%. and of course, these were the states arizona, nevada, georgia, north carolina that democrats have been wanting to put in a play. but the joe biden campaign had pretty much given up on, but given that kamala harris is doing better with black and hispanic voters, they believe that they can put georgia, north carolina, arizona, nevada, back into play. >> how does that then impact the electoral map? because this gets to what the that now harris campaign was suggesting in this new memo that there really expanding the map yeah. >> alright, so let's just start out with what was basically joe biden's one path, right? which was the great lake win in the great lake battleground states, right? when in pennsylvania, win in michigan win here in wisconsin. but that was losing in nevada, was losing an arizona is losing in georgia. and of course it was losing in north carolina as joe biden did last time around. but now now the harris campaign believes they could win this way, but they could also win in
5:37 am
the sunbelt. so let's say that she loses in pennsylvania, michigan, and wisconsin, but she can still when she can still get to 275 by winning in nevada, arizona, georgia, and of course, north carolina. so basically she's providing more pass herself? yes. joe biden had a path, but it was a very narrow path kamala harris's campaign believes that they can expand the map, get more past went on the sunbelt here and lose in the great lake battleground states were have some combination here, right? where maybe you win in pennsylvania. >> but that just because you lose michigan doesn't mean you're going to lose exactly, exactly right? just because you lose in one of the states appear it doesn't mean game over. it means you have more opportunities. and of course at the end of the day, this is a brace for the electoral college. it's the race to 270 and the harris campaign believes they have more past because they're doing better among an expanded group of voters, hispanic vote share is an interesting one, isn't it, harry? because isn't, isn't trump's still doing a lot better there than we've seen traditionally and fast. >> she is he is, yeah. and this i think is the real question
5:38 am
for kamala harris. you know, you note in our poll that was no clear leader, but it was 49 to 46, right? and harris said the 46, the question is, how does she catch up to donald trump? and i believe the way she can do it is doing even better with hispanic voters, even better. a black voters. and she's doing now, she still has room to grow, given that she's still trailing how joe biden did in 2020. >> thanks, harry. this is a really good basis where we're going to be jumping off from, from here. >> thank you, john. >> all right. with this now, national political reporter and the author of the bulk works, maga bills, new who's letter? marc caputo, sir. great to see you this morning. what seems to be invoking the reporting world this morning is talking about the race to define vice president kamala harris? no, course, as with most things, you were out ahead by a day or two on this story talking about how the trump campaign in hopes to use a willie horton like strategy to define her for our viewers who are not alive in 1988, what does that mean in 1988, when vice president bush was running for president
5:39 am
successfully. >> so against michael dukakis, an outside political group, ran a rather blistering ad against dukakis because he was the massachusetts governor who while in office, had a man named willie horton. are william horton commit a murder went or pardon me, commit a rape. when he was on furlough from prison where he had been incarcerated for murder. and it was used to paint by the bush campaign and the push allies dukakis as soft on crime. you're going to see similar things like that coming from the trump campaign. and trump's allies, in fact, trump started a flick at it yesterday by pointing out that there was this minnesota bail fund that kamala harris had supported at one time and then in subsequent years, albeit he wasn't this nuance when he was on stage he's trump yesterday, there were various people who once they got bailed out, had committed other crimes, including allegedly in one case or another case, murder. so the idea of using the sort of real-world examples of alleged

soft on crime policies are techniques are beliefs that then turned into these horrific, ripped from the headlines. stories, or what they're going to use against harris. now there's a subtext to all of this. the willie horton ads in 1988 were decried by democrats as being racist. and one of the reasons for that is they prominently featured the photograph and willie horton, who was black. now the trump campaign and trump allies say, look, this isn't racist, this is just us talking about policy and we're going to do more we're of it. one of the things are going to be doing is examining a record as da now these are very complicated cases, so i don't want to shorthand them too much on tv, but safe to say, we're going to see a lot more of this in the coming days and trump flicked at it yesterday. >> look in one of the issues here is the difference between subtexts and texts because a lot of democrats don't think it was subtext at all. in it, nor do they necessarily see subtext here. and you mentioned nuance. a lot of times, donald trump lacks nuance here and you write about this a concern that this can quickly become overt racism

and you saw worries about that inside the republican caucus in the house where mike johnson had to ask his colleagues, hey, back ackoff, these dei attacks, these are bad correct? >> in fact, my story, my peace and the maga villain newsletter came out before mike johnson said that in their quoted anonymously on adviser a confidant of trumps who said, look, he's, and this was said with a measure of resignation and hope but he doesn't do it. look, he's probably going to call her a dei hire. and if he does that, then we'll see what we see when we see it. it is an example of the fact that trump and his campaign aren't really always in line sometimes you have the trump campaign, this group of very skilled professionals, and they have donald trump out there who is just sort of operating in space so now the campaign has to follow his lead and a tries and doesn't contradict him. but this is a concern in their ranks so far, trump hasn't done it, and so far, mike johnson, as you pointed out, in the house caucus, the republican
5:42 am
caucus or conference has tried to get his members not to do it. of course, has been summarily ignored. by the likes of marjorie taylor greene, who just shot out of the canon and said it anyway. so it's a difficult balancing act harry enten was just on talking about black and hispanic voters. one thing that needs to be pointed out when we are analyzing these different segments of the electorate is the biggest cause of donald trump's defeat in 2020 compared to 2016 was the loss of white male voters support his base. he lost that demographic group by said, he lost margins with that demographic group by a greater amount than any other big demographic group in the election. and that's what cost of the appointment of j.d. vance might help in that regard? obviously, we're going to see what happens very quickly. there are some vulnerabilities for trump on the issue of race. hear clearly you know, his own nephew just came out with a book where he said that in the 1970s he heard his uncle donald trump use the n word the when when is he talking about how his car was
5:43 am
defaced? he says n word. i recall him saying disgustedly, look at what the n words did the trump campaign denies this but race front and center may not necessarily be helpful for donald trump certainly not. >> the reality is that kamala harris poses a much more difficult and complex challenge to the trump campaign than joe biden did. and one of those issues is going to be raised one of the issues that we need to look at his race and who sort of discusses it in the wrong way and sort of a noise upsets as strange as that big middle of the country. there are still a small sliver of swing voters here. and how they swing could depend on how this issues here marc caputo, great to see you this morning. thanks so much for sharing your reporting. >> sara. all right. we just got these numbers on us economic growth coming in more than expected in the second quarter cnn's paula newton joins me now break down the numbers for us. is there cause for concern or optimism?
5:44 am
>> this game on sara, this number surprises me 2.8% so significant because the economy is still firing on all cylinders. >> and yet inflation is really under control. >> i want you to look at the chart now on what's been going on this, of course was from in fact, april to june. if we look at what it did in q1, you'll see there it was at one 0.4%. look at this increase for q2, 2024. that is an incredible growth in the economy in terms of putting it in perspective though when everyone's looking at this, look, everyone, consumer spending, american consumer continuing to spend, spend, spend even on discretionary items. and that's significant when people we'll look at the robustness of the american economy sara, i don't have to remind you though that interest rates are at a generational high people thought that perhaps if this came in lower lower-than-expect ed, there was a chance that may be next week drone powell would lower interest rates. that's completed cheatle off the table. now i can almost guarantee that you perhaps are looking at an interest rate decrease in september, why
5:45 am
that's because inflation in fact was low in the last month. i mean, look you are high fiving this morning. the american economy, this is incredible that the economy is moving this way, but inflation is seemingly under control. and in terms of the way this plays politically, you also have to think of that the certainly white house will be doing a victory lap as well. both the vice president and the president this morning, it is good news though. we are counting on that american consumer and so many analysts and we're looking at the american consumers thinking, whom are they slowing down their spending? they are not look at that number two point 2.8% again, though, also some good robust news in manufacturing, all of this playing in well to the political season and if you are at the white house right now, it's fascinating because so many people are still complaining. and rightly so over the cost of things. but you're saying consumers are still spending even on discretionary items they are. >> there's been a slight pullback, but really it has not been significant in the issue here, people still have jobs, the unemployment rate ticked up
5:46 am
a little bit to 4.1%, but in general, this is the economy in good equilibrium that is still growing. >> paula newton. thank you so glad to have you show up with good news. you're welcome back anytime so the harris campaign out with their first video for the new candidate. this morning of the new candidates is warning side note soundtrack by beyonce what does it say though, about how while harris wants to define her candidacy? now, first, new safety concerns for israel at the paris olympics, the israeli foreign minister delivering a warning to french counterparts about intelligence that iranian operatives are planning to target members of their olympic delegation and israeli tourists francis underscored its commitment to making sure the games are safe and secure. cnn's isabel rosalas has more summer 1996 or six on it in a georgia, a backpack is stowed under a bench that's intentional olympic park and at

this afternoon, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu sitting down for two critical meetings. first, with president biden and then with vice president kamala harris and presumptive democratic presidential nominee that second meeting likely to be the most watched as harris's position on israel remains largely unknown, but aid say her stance will become very clear after this one-on-one sit-down with netanyahu joining me now is congressman lloyd doggett. he is a member of the house ways and means committee, and he is also one of the lawmakers who boycotted the prime minister's address to congress yesterday. first of all, let's talk about kamala harris is meeting with netanyahu, joe biden called himself a zionist. he was proud of his stance with israel. what do you think kamala harris is stances should be on israel with netanyahu, with, of course the war still raging in gaza while she needs to define her own position, and she's already spoken out about the humanity syrian crisis in gaza i support
5:55 am
most important president biden has been saying, it's just what he has done. >> it sometimes that i question netanyahu will i'm not listened to the words of encouragement. he will take all the assistance he can get and continue to star people in gaza and engage in conduct that abandoned since the hostages and causes misery in gaza do you think the u.s should stop sending weapons then to israel i've voted to stop offensive aid. i think yesterday, i heard from hostages instead of attending the netanyahu's speech, i met with hostages from they're israel who told us their tremendous pain at the outrage of the hamas massacres. but how it has been prolonged and extended now for almost plus nine months by netanyahu is sabotaging efforts to get a ceasefire and the return of the hostages netanyahu, about three fourths of the israelis want him to resign. he came here to
5:56 am
this building, to congress to use it as a prop because it home he gets booed here. he sought clause and some vindication for his refusal to make the ceasefire process and the rescue of the hostages a top priority i want to ask you why you didn't attend netanyahu's speech? well, because as i said, i think he will only wanted to use this. congress as a prop we believe that he should be in israel working together if these hostages released. he's had opportunities to do that. hamas is obviously a big obstacle, but the hostages feel that time and time again, he has interfered with the process in ways that have kept their loved ones away from them and to listen to them is tear causing. it's painful to hear the trauma that they have gone through. and there for feeling, as was said yesterday, by some top former mossad and national

security officials in israel, that netanyahu is an existential threat to israel iran, hezbollah, hamas, the most immediate threat, but netanyahu by his refusal to work to give any hope to the palestinians for a long-term security uh, by his refusal to support a two-state solution, by his unwillingness to condemn settler violence in the west bank against palestinians. he poses a security threat because israel cannot live as a secure place, as a zionist place, which i support unless the palace syrians have hope and a future for themselves here to saying a political solution is necessary, not a military one i want to get to what's happening on our political front here in the u.s you were the first to go on television and call for biden to step down from the from the campaign for president. >> he has done that. and now kamala harris is ascending. is that how you hoped it would play out well i wanted to fair
