12:00 pm
basis i think the basis 75% of the country far beyond the republican party, because we're party of common sense and i'm a person of common sense. i want to have low taxes. i wouldn't have strong borders. i want to have a strong military so that china and russia look, they've allowed china and russia to do the impossible combined the natural enemies they always happen because china needs more land and russia has it. they've always been natural enemies. and because of obama it started with him and then biden because he didn't know what the hell he was doing. they've now become one force. and then now they're adding a ran to it. and they're reading north korea towed pretty powerful force. this is something that is unthinkable that they allowed to happen oh, it's good
12:01 pm
that the honeymoon period is gonna look. she's got a little period. she's got a convention coming up it's about policy, it's not about hersh. i think she's incompetent because i've watched her. she destroyed california, she destroyed san france, everything she's touched has turned to bad things. i want to use. i'm not going to use foul language. >> but everything she's touched a certain bet she's incompetent. the reason she's not doing what i do, and she's not doing what she should be doing she won't even do interviews with friendly people because she can't do better than biden now he had a reason for not doing well and he was never 25 years ago, the sharpest, what brightest bulb in the ceiling that i can tell you. okay. he wasn't but he could do interviews at least not lately. he couldn't perhaps but she's she should be doing interviews. she doesn't want to do interviews. and the reason
12:02 pm
she doesn't is number one, or policies are so bad. it just to answer your question, i think that it's not going to change because it's really ultimately not about her as much as about her policies she wants open borders. she wants to defund the police. she wants to fund the police. she wants to take away your guns anybody that thinks they're not going to come after you or guns, you know, when i was president, i totally protected the guns and i think it's very important. and i know i take some heat sometimes for it. but you have to have safety. you have to have when the bad guy walks in with a gun, you've got to have some way of protecting himself and boy that would be you would see crime go up at levels that you've never seen when people say on this side of the house this house has guns. we will use the guns. they say, let's pass, will go someplace else. >> you have to have add for four years and you know, as you know, the nra endorsed me very powerfully every time i ran, every time my sons are members
12:03 pm
and i guess indirectly, i'm a member to but they gave me the strongest of endorsements and that's against very strong competition. >> people felt the same way. >> now you have to have, you have to have that right our second amendment is a very important right. and it has to be protected all right. >> there is a lot to fact check. there, so we're just going to run through things here. he said that kamala harris is in favor of is not in favor of giving israel weapon. she made it very clear her campaign did this morning that she is not in favor of an arms embargo of israel. he said that no one died on january 6, people four killed. we know that ashli babbitt, three others died for medical emergencies. one officer died immediately after having been pepper sprayed and the day following, there were four officers who died of suicide in the months after he talked talked about how there's a constitutional issue for how kamala harris was chosen by the democratic party. that's not true. the constitution doesn't
12:04 pm
govern how the party selects its candidates. he also talked about the border, said 20 million people over the border. that's grossly exaggerated he could have just gone with the actual number for it is not a great number. he chose 20 million. but actually crossings are down for the last four months, the lowest they've been in three years since the president signed an executive order he certainly did not mention that that is not the picture that he painted and he also said that in afghanistan, there had been no deaths in the 18 months before the withdrawal that no one was even shot at will tell that to the service members who were wounded in 2020, they certainly would disagree with what he said. there he is right though that no one died until the withdrawal, and that is in part because that 18 months he's talking about that is the timeline for when his administration negotiated with the taliban to secure a deal for the u.s leaving afghanistan. he negotiated his administration, negotiated that
12:05 pm
deal, and then he left the execution of that for the biden administration? yes. the withdrawal turned out to be a debacle buckle critics of the deal also say the deal was a debacle. there are a number of other things and includes the crowd size, which he told a lie about of kamala harris. which clearly is getting at him because he stayed on crowd-sized for a long time. jeff zeleny is back here but as you were at the rally yesterday in detroit, you've been to many trump rallies. this is something that is bothering him and he felt the need to exaggerate and lie about it. >> for sure. i mean, it's almost back to the future on crowd size of this is something that has really been at the center of the former president's line of thinking. successes measured in crowd sizes. he's often misstated his own, but look, we all know that trump campaign rallies are large. some of the largest we've seen in modern days. i was at the harris rally last night detroit. it was the size of a trump campaign rally, if not bigger, certainly bigger than most democratic rallies. in fact, all of them have been this year thousands were at the
12:06 pm
rally last night in detroit. it's impossible to get a precise number, but let me describe it for you. it was a large airport hangar that there were a risers on both sides at sprawled out onto the tarmac large area out there were air force a two is parked a for risers were filled, rows of chairs were filled, people as far as the eye could see, thousands were there. he said 1,500, but i think perhaps one of the other headlines out of this is debates he said that he wants to have three debates in september. we will see what the harris campaign says that they've agreed to one of those on on abc, but the other details are still being worked out. of course all right. >> and he had those three debates that he wanted on different networks. i believe we also have anthony scaramucci with us who was a former trump white house communications director. anthony, you've you know, the former president for a while. i'm curious what your general thoughts are on his his press conference. he did he did take questions from the press for in this still answering them. and also to why he feels
12:07 pm
the need to lie about crowd sizable things well, i mean, that's something, you know, he made sean spicer or lie about that the day after the inauguration kinda consistently do that. >> he's also i, mean, he spent the whole time talking about fearmongering. he's talking about fear on the border he's talking about fear in the economy. he's talking about fear of crime. and so it's a very fear-based approach. i don't think any strategists working with them agrees with what he's doing right now. they're sitting there cringing. he sitting there saying, okay, we're flailing. so i'm going to show you how it's done. i'm going to go out to the press, speak on hinge for 40 minutes to an hour, and i'm going to set everybody's straight on what we're doing. and so it's not working if i if i'm a democratic or democratic strategists, please let him go on for another two hours, like benito mussolini or fidel dasha, just let them buy them on wind himself. and so
12:08 pm
the harris campaign is actually very smart here, saying little about this and just fact checking things related to israel. but i know the president's 71 campaign stops with them 11 days in the white house, but i did work with them for almost a year that is a frustrated and believe it or not, that is a frightened donald trump. he's looking at the poll numbers and was a big tell when he does the accordion thing and tells you how great he is doing in the polls. that's a big tell for him. he's not doing well in the polls. he knows that. and so that's another big lie. that he's saying from that podium. so let them keep talking. he'll dig a bigger hole for himself. >> and people will remember what i don't really want to go back to what was going on in this country, 2017 to january of 2021? all right, anthony, if you can stay with us, we're going to get in a quick break. you're watching their former president trump in palm beach, florida answering questions of
12:09 pm
reporters there at mar-a lago, he said many things. he also said many things that were untrue on the crime on crime, on the economy, on the border, we have fact-checks on some of those issues. right after a quick break cnn is live from chicago as democrats unite to offer their support to a new nominee and her running mate fellow cnn for complete coverage, the democratic national no convention starts monday, august 19 on cnn and streaming on max with car gurus. you can start your financing from home if only you could do things your way all the time. maybe someday get it with gurus i wish my tv provider, let me choose what i pay for slim, let you do that. where you go i wish mike levy, provider, let me choose what i pay for and let me pause my

12:14 pm
spur economic development and some of those countries to try to curb the number of people who are coming to the border. but let's go to tom foreman because he's got a lot more specifically on the border on immigration tom, what did you notice? >> yeah. i'm glad you got started on this because there is a lot to unpack in terms of false. let's start with the economy. a big thing for many issues out there. he said we could literally be in the throes of a depression, not a recession he. said closer 1920s, depression, 1920s. the depression was 25% unemployment. we're at 4.3% now, not even close, not even the ballgame. he also mentioned weirdly enough people can't buy bacon. i checked on bacon sales. they seem to be doing just fine on the border as brianna noted earlier, he grossly over inflates the number of people coming over the border there. he also repeated a claim that he's made many times before that he really must like, even as the numbers fall here, saying this notion that people are coming out of mental institutions and
12:15 pm
prisons, as he said, all over the world, they're emptying into the united states. he said this many times, never offered any proof for it about kamala harris. he says she's a most on popular slash, worst vice president in history, couldn't pass a bar exam scholars surveyed by the la times ranked vp's from 1933 on, they put harris at 11 out of 18, not great, but certainly not the worst. and she did pass the bar exam even though she had to do it more than once. she said president biden had the presidency taken away from him. not true. that is false. president biden agreed to leave the presidency, wasn't happy about it. nobody would be. but he agreed to leave and he backs harrison her in her campaign. he said, everybody wanted roe v wade overturn the country overwhelmingly wanted this and returned to the states not true even now more than two years afterward, a pew study said that 63% of people still think abortion nationwide should largely be legal not left up to the states. and one more thing he talked for quite some time there about how he protected
12:16 pm
hillary clinton and always wanted to keep her safe. but at least more than a half dozen times in recent years, he has said publicly, she you should go to jail and a whole lot of other democrats as well all right. >> tom foreman. thank you so much for that. there was quite the list. let's go to kristen holmes, who is there in the room. i ask him some questions as well. kristen yeah. >> brianna, if you asked donald trump, i was asking stupid questions because i asked why he hasn't been campaigning at such a critical point for his campaign. and i will tell you that speaking to his allies, they they have been very concerned that he's not out there on the campaign trail. one of the things he said was because he was leading by so much and that he would pick up his campaigning after the democratic convention. but i will tell you that again from speaking to senior advisers and people close to the campaign, they do not believe that he is leading by so much. are they cautiously optimistic? yes. do they believe at the end of this day that fundamentally they can make this the same kind of race. it was against president
12:17 pm
joe biden. yes, they do who? because they believe that they can focus on those policies like inflation, like economy, like the economy, like crime. but that does not mean that he is leading by a lot has been largely behind closed doors for the last week with the only rally that he's doing this week in montana, 10:00 p.m. east coast time. and to stay that is not a swing state. now, he defended those there's been saying that some of the states that he was visiting that were republican states where because he was helping other republican candidates. but he mostly clearly got upset when talking about candidate painting against the harris campaign. in particular, those crowd sizes, obviously one thing we know about donald trump is he is fixated on the amount of people who attend both his rally rallies and the rallies of his rivals. he was fixated on that today when he was asked a question, he did not let it go. he said over and over again that his crowds were bigger. he listed enormous crowds that he had had various times and saying that harris, his crowds were much smaller than that. >> so clearly, even though he is projecting this confidence
12:18 pm
that he is leading by a lot, that this is something that he is paying very close attention to. >> and i can tell you from my conversations with allies of his. he has brought it up in those conversations. the crowd size itself. so as we go forward, some of the news that was made, not just the rambling and ranting that we saw was the fact that he has agreed to three debates, one with fox won with abc, one with nbc. that is something that now is in kamala harris is corps. obviously both of them have agreed to the abc debates. that seems like it's going to happen and on september 10, but other than that, this seemed like it was just donald trump taking advantage of an opportunity to bring press here and take those questions and i will remind you one of the things we said coming into this press conference, he was going to say over and over again that kamala harris has not taken a question from the press. he did in fact do that when he was up at the podium today yes. >> and i should have fact-checked. that is the first thing that kristen holmes asks smart questions. we're all just very aware of that it goes without saying kristen holmes live for us from palm beach, florida. thank you. very much. >> i want to go now to julia chatterley, who we talked to
12:19 pm
earlier in our show, and julia, we were you were explaining what a lot of this economic data is showing us. the former president saying that if he were president, there would have been no inflation he said that we are headed for what he he called a 1929 like crash. can you fact check all that for us i'd love to i don't know what economy he's looking at, but it's not the u.s. >> economy. there was a lot of nonsense, quite frankly in what he was saying. let's do the president of favorite former president because i think he needs it let's not use 1929. let's use peak crisis 1933, growth collapsed 30% right now in the united states, we're tracking growth or around 2.9%. so positive and not bad. back then, unemployment rate 25%, one in four american workers were out of work. right now, we've got an unemployment rate of around 4.3%. that's just over 7 million workers out of work. wages back then collapsed
12:20 pm
40% for those that were still working. we've got positive wages prices back then collapsed 25% we know we've got an inflation rate that we're not keen on. no inflation wrong. we did have inflation, we just weren't worried about it in january 2021, it was around 1.4%. now by june of 2022, here's the problem for biden. it was 9.1% and i think economists degree a lot of that. one we were coming out of the pandemic, but we spent trillions of dollars trying to help people including the american rescue plan act of 2021, biden signed it into law. and the thick everybody agrees that didn't help the inflation picture prices were up over 20% and are, and this is what people are struggling with today since february of 2021. so i hate to give him talking points, but if you want talking points, that would be a better one than any of the nonsense that he said. if you want anything more, i can talk to you about oil prices and more,
12:21 pm
but hey, nonsense. my take away. sorry. >> well, we appreciate that. and the history lesson as well, julia. thank you so much. all right, guys, what did you think lance of his press conference. >> i go back to where we started. i can't wait for the vice president to come in front of reporters not a pre-screened list, and take questions for an hour. i think that's what needs to happen. what we saw today was a pretty typical donald trump press conference, but i think if you're the campaign, you accomplish two goals that you set out doing. you've made news on debates you put put the harris campaign on the defensive, and you leaned into i student took questions for an hour. it's time for her to come out and take questions as well. >> i don't think the harris campaign is on the defensive. what we saw in that hour long hodgepodge of lies isn't any different then what we see at trump campaign rallies, what he did there was showcase his level of fear to be honest, this is a guy who continues to advocate for the 2020 election being stolen. this is a guy who was seeing the numbers that showed that georgia is more than in play and would like to act as though it has been stolen, even though every other
12:22 pm
republican on that ticket won, except the guy at the top i think that this is also a guy who decided to use his maga greatest hits, an attack everyone from barak obama to hillary clinton to the current ticket that he's running against nothing. there was anything other than what people expected, quite frankly, and they're used to the lies. trump is running scared he doesn't want to really have to have a true conversation with his with his opponent. and he's advocating for a very interesting set of debates when we think about it, like what are they a week about? >> a little over one part for one month. i think that's completely ridiculous. >> we'll see how this shakes down, but trump is gear. >> you're picking apart because he wants to do debates sunday what's the timeframe of cares if they're going to do debates, nobody is, is settle for debate every eight days. like that's a little bit crazy i was talking to a pollster before we came in here and we're talking about what he does. >> i mean, the one thing about donald trump and we can debate this. his favorability rating right now is the highest. it's ever been i saw some polling with some competitive congressional districts this week. same thing, his polling
12:23 pm
people know who he is, they know where he stands. and so we can talk about how all the things that he did it and here, but people kind of know that they kind of come to expect with him. and i think again, i think he accomplished the goals he set out to do today. >> one thing he did say to the vast majority of the country does support me. that is not quite he's never won the popular. i know you didn't. he said it though. he said the vast majority of the country does support me. i think they'll christian got on to appoint that got under his skin, obviously about how he has been campaigning. he simply hasn't been campaigning as much. and i think this is, this is one of the biggest differences from his other two presidential campaigns, who is certainly out there more. so we'll see if it changes because after the democratic convention, there's no doubt that things move on after summertime, but he's different in this campaign. there's no doubt about it. >> he hasn't been campaigning as much. and we'll have to see if harris chris starts taking questions. they both can hit each other on that. we'll see thank you so much. panel. really appreciate it. we have much more ahead. stay with cnn news central. >> we'll be right back.
12:24 pm

12:29 pm
much. >> i know you stuck around a little bit longer than anticipated. we appreciate your time. >> i want to start first with the vice president there in michigan with her new running mate how do you think she can best appeal to the white working class voters in the midwest, but specifically in michigan, that joe biden historically did really well with well, i think she could just bring the message that she's been bringing enter time. >> and as attorney general and the senate as vice president, xi's focused on families and she's particularly focused on economic policies that bring back american jobs. michigan a manufacturing state. she's about to appear at a uaw abu event. this has been the most pro-worker administration really in my lifetime, and she needs to emphasize that that will continue to be part of the harris administration agenda. she's proven that already, but we have to say it so talking about those issues that it can table issues, i think really has to be the focus we saw
12:30 pm
yesterday. i was there at the rally. >> by the way, it was a huge crowd. >> just for the record jeff zeleny was describing those numbers as well. >> he was also there you mentioned the manufacturing. >> we also know the labor union, the united auto workers president spoke at the rally last night he's endorsed this ticket, this democratic ticket in this race. do you think that he is indicative of where the rank and file is on this in terms of uaw membership yeah, i think so. >> of course, uaw is a large organization. i've represented you w members my whole life, and they have the whole range of political views. but among those members of the union or any other group that are open two conversation? i think what they see are two completely different visions of the future of this country. and in that case, they're open to accommodate harris candidacy. i
12:31 pm
think we have to deliver the message, person election by the way, of tim walz, a good friend of mine, i think does indicate that she ties us and she wants to have it administration that includes everybody, including the folks that you just described, those working class folks who often haven't felt like they had a seat at the table that their voices were hurt. voices were heard some of them went with donald trump a few years ago. i think they know they've been burned by that. and so they're open to the conversation this is going to be a close race. we have to deliver the message. but what we saw yesterday, i think was a really important step in doing that. and i think more of that and we'll bring those people back to the democratic fold for sure. >> and in terms of continuing to bring her coalition together, we know that harris and walz met briefly backstage with two liters of this uncommitted movement. of course group that voted in had a pretty sizable showing during the primary voting, uncommitted
12:32 pm
and not for the nominee or then for president joe biden, who has been running to be the nominee. what do you make of harris and walz meeting with them? do you think something like that? that's sort of outreach can make a difference in michigan in november yes, i think it'll help. >> i think it sends a message that everybody's voice matters in the way you campaign is the best indication of how you might govern the fact that they went to listen to people who are not there yet and maybe consider their thoughts as we go forward is a pretty stark contrast to what we just saw with former president donald trump a real sick and dangerous man who's so focused in on his own ego and so consumed by anger that he doesn't see anything except him his own interests. so yes, it makes a difference to listen to people who aren't there yet because their voice is do matter. i saw her deal with that yesterday, even when those protesters a handful of protesters, spoke up, she said, look, your voice
12:33 pm
is do matter. but if you want donald trump, he should just say so the difference between the joyful message of kamala harris and tim walz in this sort of weird, sick angry, venomous message of donald trump and j.d. vance is one that i think will appeal to a broad spectrum of americans, including a lot of those people who have yet to make a decision which candidate they'll choose. they don't just choose a candidate. they choose a path forward for the country. and i think in that case, and that frame the differences could not be more stark and it'll help us all right. >> congressman dan kildee. thank you so much for your time. we sure do appreciate it. >> thank you we'll be right back what i'd rather buy at expensive, annoying tiny cartridges or use these replacement ink bottles and save up to $1,000 don't get cartridge switch to the

and we'll come to you 800 a31, 37 100 former president trump and senator jd vance are reviving a controversy in governor tim walz's military record to try to slow the momentum for the democratic ticket vance accused walls of ducking a deployment to iraq in 2005 by retiring to avoid combat well, here is what we know after serving 24 years in the army national guard, walz submitted paperwork to run for congress in february of 2005. >> it was the next month in march that the guard announced a possible deployment to iraq in a large stretch of time after that being possible in may, walsh retired, then in july of 2005 is former battalion received confirmation. it was headed to iraq. i did speak with veteran joe eustis who served for over ten years with the governor. eustis does not support walls this is politics that is maybe a generous way to put it. but
12:39 pm
he said this to me, is that from what i know of the situation, they're lying, meaning some of the service members who have come out opposing walls and saying that he dodged service. he said he was as good as soldiers. you'll find i'm not trying to defend him. what i'm trying to do is defend someone who served his country. i'm not voting for him. i'll campaign against him, but i don't think it's fair to characterize his service the way they have. and let me turn now to dan lamothe. he is the national security reporter for the washington post. he wrote an in-depth piece on walz's military service and also on his retirement. and you spoke to a lot of people who had served with him. what did you find? >> that's right we spoke to some of the people that first surface to some of these complaints about governor walz back in 2018? really, even prior to that and then others like joe eustis there who very much are defending him i think the important thing to note here is he had already served 24 years he had the choice to retire they had replacement
12:40 pm
options for him so this is not simply like he's bailing with no alternative plan i do understand. and i do take on board that for folks who did go on that deployment, they probably feels differently and i think there are there are shades of gray here in a world where a lot of people are on one side or the other of a very black and white, aisle. >> yeah. and look, politically, this is something that can be used against him. i also wonder what you think about a couple of other things that he may have really left himself open to criticism on, which is this comment that he made about kerik carrying a gun into war, and he hasn't been to war and also how he has represented his rank, which can be different upon what you attain. and then what you retain upon retirement yeah, that's right on the on the issue of being at war that called those comments that he made at a campaign event it
12:41 pm
read to me like he was speaking fast and said that he was at war with those weapons. >> those weapons of war as he put it he deployed to italy there's no dispute on that so the question becomes why did he say that? that appears to be a misstatement and then on the latter issue of his rank he did serve for a time as a command sergeant major, a very senior enlisted leader within his unit he did not hold that rank long enough before retiring and did not complete all of unnecessary coursework to retire as a command sergeant major. so he reverts back to his previous rank so when you so when you hear these things like, oh, he's a retired command sergeant major. the minnesota national guard is has pretty much put that the rest. he retired as a master sergeant. that's one rank down. it's still a very senior enlisted leader but there. is some gray there that we've also had to
12:42 pm
address the interesting thing is you have on both tickets, veterans, which you don't often have. >> i mean, this is a pretty rare thing no matter who goes into the next administration you'll have someone in there who has this reference point that past administrations may not have had so clearly, this is right. >> i mean, where we're at an inflection point. these wars that we've all watched, we've all witnessed some of us have covered them on the ground and some of us have participated as combat combatants. my case, just as it's filling journalists, i was there we didn't have this before. we had some folks running congressman moulton comes to mind as one example but either way now you're going to see a modern, recent veteran in office yeah, it's really interesting, dan. thank you so much your reporting on this has been really clear and really helpful, and we thank you. >> thank you let's discuss this now further with cnn senior political commentator, adam kinzinger.
12:43 pm
>> he of course served six terms as a republican congressman from illinois annoyed and he is currently a lieutenant colonel in the air national guard after serving in the air force, he was also, he's part of the launch of republicans for harris this week. congressman, thanks for being with us. what did you make of jd vance's? this attack on tim waltz's military retirement and the timing of it i mean, it's ridiculous brianna. >> i mean, look, first off, veterans need to be supporting each other even if you disagree with their politics the attack he made about so-called leaving his men behind and he goes off and retires literally, it would be the same attack if i said j.d. vance did not realist in the marine corps therefore, he left the marine corps without his skill set. and that would be an unfair attack. obviously, because all he is required to do is to serve his enlistment period for tim walz. all he's retired. all he's required to it's serve his period as well.
12:44 pm
he had he could have retired from the national guard after 20 years. 911 happened at that time eventually, the iraq war happened, and he stayed in the military at the point of 24 years and whatever month he made the decision to retire. again, as is his right as his anybody he's right. that served more than 20 years. if he would have left his unit in a bad place, they could have stopped, lost him, which a lot of people were stop-loss at the time where they wanted to retire and the military said, no, we need your position and they can force you to not retire that obviously wasn't the case. this is a completely unfair attack. by the way, i know many people in the military that we're getting ready to deploy again, that we are retirement eligible. and they pulled the retirement handle instead of deploying again, that was there right. to do. and there was nobody in the military that faulted them for doing it. now, we did fault people that still had time left on their contract and they avoided and a deployment. even
12:45 pm
though they have the time left on their contract, it was very different when somebody says, i'm going to retire as walz had every right to do. and this is an unfair terrible attack against him. >> he was he had put in his papers basically for running for office and then it was after that that we found out that they were put on notice that there would be a potential deployment to iraq i it was interesting talking to joe eustis who served with him but does not see eye to eye with him, says he will not vote for him politically, but says that he served admirably and he said that he had a conversation with him where he'd said to him as he was thinking about retiring basically, why don't you stay in? because some people our in office and also in the guard. and that walz, he said said to him something to the effect of that he didn't really want that appearance because some people who stay in the guard and then are in office kind of get a pass for deployments or assignments he thought it was a bad look, what do you think about that no, i think that's a
12:46 pm
very fair position to take and especially when he's past his 20 year mark. >> i mean, you know, if he was as 14, 15 years, i could see staying in the guard to get to your 20 years to get a retirement out of it because he put in so much time. that's a very very fair position to take and honestly, probably if he would have stayed in the guard, he would have been pulling some strings of favoritism since he's past as 24 years, he has command responsibility as a command sergeant major. all of these are agreed, just attacks. and by the way i'd say probably upwards of a quarter of people that retire from the military revert to their previous rank. because if you don't hold a rank for three years, you can't retire what that rank i'm a lieutenant colonel. i've done over three years, lieutenant colonel, had i not in retired, i would revert to major, but that doesn't mean i was never a lieutenant colonel. the other thing that concerns let me about this is if you're a military veteran thinking about running for office, why would you run for office nowadays? because what people are going to do is take honorable service. they're going to find
12:47 pm
a way to twist it to say, for instance, you absolutely abandoned, your unit when you retired, when you had a right to retire, let me ask you let me ask you about this because seth moulton has taken aim at j.d. vance saying he didn't see combat, which is something j.d. vance said he didn't see any real fighter. he said that his book, hillbilly elegy i had said, i wondered if j.d. vance was an imperfect messenger for this because of that not to question his service because he served honorably and he served in combat zone but i wonder what you think about getting into that debate. we're now you have service members questioning how dangerous each other's service was when the fact is so many service members, they are not seeing combat or they may not be in a combat zone. what does that mean yeah look, being in a combat zone or not does make does not make your service and he more or less honorable, this
12:48 pm
reminds me of that scene in the movie, civil war that just came out where dude standing there and he's like, what kind of american ru it's like, what kind of veteran are you are we going to really start doing that pointing fingers at each other and saying you didn't get deployed, you got deployed, you've got attacked by mortars. you didn't get attacked by murderers. look j.d. vance should not be attacking somebody's military service that served honorably. if tim walz had been dishonorably church from the military. fair point. that's everything you can go after on that. but it was an honorable discharge. he served honorably j.d. vance served honorably. it would be much better if instead of trying to score cheap political points, they just acknowledged each other service and moved on. and maybe we'd encourage brianna moore veterans to actually get involved in politics, which we need instead now people are going to say, i've done what 99% of the rest of the country didn't do. but i don't want to run for office because maybe one time i said something inaccurate about my service intentionally or unintentionally. and now they're going to use that and hang that around my neck by the 99% of people who never served donald trump, avoided the
12:49 pm
draft, claiming he had bone spurs nobody on his ticket and especially him, have any right to attack anybody service to the united states of america when he was unwilling to even lift a finger when his country needed him, he abandoned his country yeah, we see how helpful this knowledge been a veteran can be certainly if you're the commander in chief or your second adam kinzinger, great to have you. >> thank you so much you bet will be right back the democratic national convention starts monday, august 19 on cnn and streaming on back when you're home needs work, where do you go? angie? angie? >> that's where angie gay man? >> and with angie find top rated certified pros in your area, plus compare quotes and pricing to help you get all your jobs done well, find top rated certified pros in your area at angie.com. >> when he snuck into a warbyparker store, you're immediately met by well, glasses but there's more than meets the eye. like contact lenses, not my gi again, expert

12:54 pm
first time now was recorded by body cameras worn by butler township police officers. >> cnn's zach cohen is with us and zach, you have looked through this footage. >> what does it reveal? >> you guys? this is the first time we're really seeing what a police officer saw when it was hoisted up to that roof overlooking trump's july 13 rally in butler, pennsylvania and came face-to-face with trump's would-be assassin. now, we don't see the shooter thomas crooks in this video, but we do see the officer from the moment he's picked up and lift it up onto that roof. and 20 quickly drops down is about 40 seconds before crooks open fire on donald trump. eventually killing one rallygoer and injuring another, obviously injuring donald trump as well. and this is a really dramatic moment. it's a moment that's really been screwed nice and all of the hearings on capitol hill where lawmakers have asked this question of when was the shooter first recognize? when did you first recognize that he was a threat? and when did somebody first come into contact with the shooter? this appears to be that moment, one of the officers later in this clip can be heard saying, quote, dude,
12:55 pm
he turned around on me talking about the shooter and what property him to drop down from the roof and not engaged further. obviously, this was not they've did not react quick enough to stop the shooter from getting off eight rounds at the former president and there's body camera footage from a different officer and it shows some other key details. >> absolutely. it shows these officers talking about how they had warned secret service to play somebody at this building, this building with a clean line of sight at the former president before earlier in the week that i made that warning to secret service, obviously, according to what we hear in this video, secret service did not listen prompted confusion in the aftermath as to how this shooter was able to get up on that roof, why nobody was covering it, and why ultimately the shooter was get off that many shots before he was eventually taken out by us secret service sniper. >> well, it is certainly informative to see something that we've heard about here. zach, thank you for the reporting. we'll be right back sure. >> i'm a paid actor. this isn't a real company, but there's no way to fake up. work can help your business. so
