raise, join me at trying how come it's monday, august 12 right now on cnn this morning know them well, we will win critical swing state polling shows kamala harris's campaign could be rebuilding the blue wall plus yes. >> john miller harris, you are fired, you've done a horrible job donald trump attacking harris on the border and the economy now accusing her up stealing one of his key policy proposals. >> and overseas ukraine admits to operating inside russia for the first time, while also accusing putin there's army of dangerous escalation at a nuclear power plant all right. >> 5:00 a.m. here in washington alive looked at the capitol on this monday morning. >> good morning, everyone. i'm
2:02 am
kasie hunt. it's wonderful to have you with us. vice president kamala harris, still riding high this week as former president donald trump continues to struggle with how to run against her someone who suggests we should terminate the constitution of the united states again donald trump confronted with new polling over the weekend that shows just how different the race is with harris at the top of the ticket in the new york times sienna poll out saturday, big moves in the so-called blue wall states, pennsylvania, wisconsin, and michigan harris up four points, 50 to 46 with likely voters in each state that is just within the margin of error. axios yesterday writing this quote, trump, who
2:03 am
looked and felt like a clear frontrunner heading into last month's republican convention has fumed, stewed and stumbled in private and public ever since, advisers are telling him harris we'll grow her lead coming out of the democratic convention, which begins a week from today. tomorrow. today, especially if they don't define her better faster, joining me now to discuss nick johnson, he's axios publisher and maga talev, senior contributor at axios. welcome to both of you for being here this was a weekend of some a6. it seems for former president donald trump, there was that front-page sunday times story from jonathan swan and maggie haberman? the ticked through a number of things that he has done, reportedly called use the b word to describe harris multiple times. we should note that trump campaign denies that also, apparently angering a critical donor, sending text messages that indicated that he's a little bit he's unhappy
2:04 am
about the state of things. nic what does this say to you this was what he said. i think i was right. he told rattle donors friday night, that's about what he did where he questioned kamala harris is black identity at the national nabj conference with black journalists he's clearly struggling to figure out how to do this. >> this was like a 2000 to 2018 vintage swan haberman like there's a leaking is back again. we're getting people from inside the room very, very close insidery rooms, very detailed things happening. the surrounding former president trump, i think it is very much a rattle like we talked about this week after week after week, the big mode that kamala harris and her campaign has had its translated into fundraising numbers. it's translated into giant rally crowds is translating into poll after poll after poll. this is not something present. a former president trump had seen before. latest poll this morning shows kamala harris beating him on the economy of the strongest one against president biden. and so of course, now this is a campaign that has to figure out how to
2:05 am
get its footing again please, attacks going to work. what are they going to get a piece of good news. they thought they had something with the tim walz pick. now as you say, we're leading into the convention that's going to be another loved fest for kamala harris had the president react to this. i was just looking at his truth social account overnight. he's fake ai crowds were commonly harris and he was taken credit for getting the olympics to la he never coach, but i think the campaign is clearly trying to find its footing. >> yeah. well, and you're talking about this. it's actually it's on the front of the financial times this morning, harris leads trump on economy and pull. that marks sharp sentiment shift. i mean, that margaret has honestly been my big question is what was going to happen economically when the market took a dive in the last week or so. that's the kind of unpredictable thing that might shake kamala harris's momentum this seems like if, if there's as much as trump is clearly focused on what the times is writing and all of these reports. i mean, he he was also posting on truth social about the fake news and low self-esteem leakers, which seems to me a clear, clearly
2:06 am
focused on on that story this economic stuff is fundamental but if that holds, he really will have to go back to the drawing board for a new playbook one of those interesting aspects of the new york times sienna poll over the weekend showed that it was not only nationally in the polling, but in that blue state wall that she was beginning to overtake donald trump, but it wasn't just in those overall numbers. it was on numbers like trust so there's sort of a trust wave and susie asm wave and we begin to see her try to redefine the way she's viewed on the border, which is the other big vulnerability for her as a quasi-incumbent coming into this role. but the border or the economy are going to be the two issues. and if she is able to neutralize some of the criticism on the border front and even potentially flip views
2:07 am
on the economy. then she really does have a powerful dynamic, not just going into the convention, but because the democrats convention is so late this year, they come out of the convention and guess what? early vote is starting. and that's normally you'd be looking at the calendar saying, well, it's august, you know, let's see how things are in mid-october, like a lot of the voting has happened by good luck has run out sometime, but we his close election that you've come out of the convention labor day and just coast the rest of the way i mean sure. >> i i am i am not willing yet to say that something couldn't have in october to change this race extremely fundamental timber or september, you know, considering what we've already seen but it does the the realities do feel like they are in some ways starting to set in and tony fabrizio the pollster, was also, you know, it's been reported believes that there's
2:08 am
going to be a polling bumped from the convention. >> he thinks it may settle down after that, or at least that's what he's saying privately. but there are others who seem to think that this may be on a total glide path. >> i mean, there's a couple more moments we're waiting for in hour, waiting for kamala harris more time with the press. he's promised for a sit down interview. she's been a very ghazi sort of campaign. let's get more policy proposals coming out right? don't steal my life, but yet, we still have been made because i'm i remember remember the last thing that moved the race immensely, and so i think there's still some inflection moments to come. but for now, the momentum is still going on her face. >> all right. nic johnston, margaret talev. thanks for kicking us off. knew we got some new digs here. it's great to have you. >> thanks. >> appreciate. >> all right. coming up next here on cnn this morning, a dangerous escalation in ukraine as president zelenskyy accuses russia of starting a fire at a nuclear power plant slot a deadly explosion in maryland leaves a house completely leveled and donald trump

2:16 am
>> nuclear plant. >> indeed, there is an briefly at claire, this incursion into russia from the ukrainians and how, how off guard was putin caught? >> i mean. pretty, off god it seems right now today, it's somewhat awkwardly. he's made some prepared remarks to a forum of military equipment in moscow. this is an annual event talking about there's a real-world know know-how of russian equipment while at the same time clearly having failed to defend the southern border today, we're seeing evacuation students in two regions, cool, just square this incursion started a week ago, and bulgur it to the south. so it seems according to the patchwork of reports that we're getting out of the area that ukraine is still making headway fierce fighting, still going on. i think the question for russia is will it a mass forces bring

campaign events over the weekend. trump posting on truth social, he says he raised $28 million during a two-day swing through wyoming, montana, and colorado kamala harris was also out west her campaign announcing a san francisco fundraiser that harris was set to speak at, brought in $12 they said this is the day before the event. harris also traveled to the swing state of nevada. she is expected to roll out an economic platform in the coming weeks. >> she shared her support for this policy during a las vegas rally over the weekend when i am president, we will continue our fight for working families including to raise the minimum wage and eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality worker so that might sound familiar. certainly republicans want to remind you that it might hear was donald
2:31 am
trump almost a month ago? well, at the republican national convention got the center of our plan for economic relief are massive tax cuts for workers that include something else that stood out to be very popular. it's called no tax on tips trump. >> now accusing harris of stealing his idea, joining me now, washington correspondent for the san francisco chronicle, share a stein and political reporter for notice, rescore welcome to both of you. thank you so much for being here at shira on these numbers in the kamala harris fundraising mean this is kind of one of the impacts of president biden dropping out of the race, particularly how tech money seems to be opening back up to harris in a way that it wasn't quite there for biden. what do you know about this shift? >> i think a big part of this is largely attributable fact that she's a california person. they know her as attorney general, they know how she's going to prosecute or not prosecute tech companies.
2:32 am
and so they feel maybe a little bit more open. i've seen some hope from tech people and folks in silicon valley that maybe she will be a little bit more tech friendly than president biden has been. so i think we'll expect to see a lot more of those folks wanting to come out for her. yeah. so big picture reese gorman we got this new polling from the new york times over the weekend that showed her widening lead in some of these battleground states still with us the margin of error, but she's above, she's at 50% one of the things that also stood out to me is that she seems to be closing the gap on the economy. >> in particular voters still saying donald trump, 52% of voters saying he would handle the economy better. kamala harris at 46%, but that's a stronger position then president biden had against donald trump. and there's also a new poll in the ft, the chose harris leading trump on the economy and a sharp sentence sentiment shift is how they write it. this is all clearly
2:33 am
getting under donald trump's skin you know, he had quite a weekend. he was posting things on truth social yesterday hey, alluding to and talking about the news media and leakers and all of the various other things that are swirling here. what are you focusing on as we head into this week before the convention? >> yeah, definitely looking at just how trump is dealing with his whole thing, this is kind of why his campaign and him especially were so upset that biden dropped out of the race there really, they felt like that a good game. planning gets biden. they felt like they were beating him, they were winning. there were showing all the polls. they were doing. it was looking really good for them. and then with harris, it's showing that voters are on the economy front. voters aren't necessarily blaming curve for biden's economy. and they were joe biden, which shows those narrowing gaps right now. and that's one reason why there are just really upset and trump is kind of spiraling on truth social right now with these kind of out-of-pocket just rats. and i think the good thing for him is that they don't necessarily have as big reach if they did on twitter. but there's still just there
2:34 am
and people reported such myself and others are reporting on them. right. so there are definitely getting out there for sure we saw j.d. vance over the weekend. he's continuing to try to contrast with the harris campaign, sat down with a number. i believe three sunday show hosts in part trying to of course, defend the remarks that he's made, but also to highlight the fact that he is sitting down with reporters first, this has become a line of attack against the harris walz ticket here was how vance and answered the question about kamala harris's racial identity. and of course, the trump comments that to the nabj questioning her black identity, watch i believe that kamala harris is whatever she says she is, but i believe importantly that president trump is right, that she's a chameleon. she pretends to be one thing in front of what
2:35 am
audience she pretends to be something different in front of another audience. look, dana, she's not running a political campaign. she's running a movie. she only speaks to voters behind a teleprompter. everything is scripted so shira, this is one of the ways they're trying to talk about kamala harris as a chameleon, the new york post picked up, picked up on that this morning. >> it says comma chameleon seems that's how murdoch would have them attack, attack her with the reality is the messaging has not been consistent on this out of the trump campaign, there really struggling to find it that attack line on her. i really thought they were going to stick with her being a san francisco liberal feel like that's something that plays really well to their base and to moderates there are folders, but they've sort of gone back and forth on different narratives i mean, on the chameleon thing, isn't every politician a little bit of a chameleon jd vance's chains positions as well. i think we've seen that from president biden over his long career so it's it's odd criticism of
2:36 am
her when we see that from all politicians. >> well, i mean, look, there are some, you know, certainly the flip-flopping label has sunk. some people, those who have tried to push back against, that will argue, hey, we've, we've learned from our mistakes. we've evolved but reese, one of the other things that of course has been out there is this, these questions about tim walz and his military service that republicans have tried to kind of hammer on. they over the weekend, the harris team said he misspoke. this was vance talking a little bit, but with our dana bash about walz's military record, let's watch of course, dana. >> i honor his service and i've never criticized what tim walz did when he was in the military. i criticized his retirement decision. and most importantly, dana, i criticized his lying about his own record. okay. >> this is a guy who was captured on video saying, i carried a gun and war. >> he never went to war. this
2:37 am
is a guy who has been captured on video as other people say, he's an afghanistan veteran, he's a veteran of a war, nodding along in agreement instead of saying no, no, no, i did serve my country. i did it honorably, but i never for went to a warzone. i'm not criticizing tim walz's service i'm criticizing the fact that he lied about his service for political gain every is what was your read on how he answered that question? i think he was answering it in a way that kind of that the campaign wants it to, the campaign wants him out of there being attacked dog mean fans himself was deployed and i think that they view him as kind of the perfect kind of attack dog on this issue for walz. and again, apart, a lot of this evan's going on the sunday shows doing all these interviews is a kind of kind of like goad them out into the public and to talk the press. i mean, a lot of what walz has done. i mean him answering said they must focus through spoke for the campaign harris has changed positions through spokespeople on campaigns. and so this is why you're seeing vance do all these interviews is try and get
2:38 am
them out and try to talk to them publicly and go on to be interviewed and kind of answer these questions that voters have. >> alright, rescore man. sure. sign. thank you both very much for being here this morning. i appreciate it. >> all right. in the middle east, an attack on israel by iran could be just days away. that's the latest intelligence assessment from the israelis according to axios president biden concerned any attack would further jeopardize hopes for peace in gaza. is a ceasefire possible before the end of your scope possible? >> the plan i put together endorsed by the g7, endorsed by the un security council center, is still viable. and i'm working literally every single day to and my whole team to see to it that it doesn't escalate into a regional war. but it easily can hamas showing little interest in returning to the negotiating table. >> they want meteor mediators to compel israel to accept a

the region that would be crucial in knocking missiles out of the sky iran also put out some sort of strange no-fly notice saying that it might be carrying out exercises in the next three or four days. the picture that we get is they could be preparing for another multiple missile attack on israel, possibly together in coordination with hezbollah, which could overwhelm israeli air defenses and yet they could also be posturing to put the pressure on israel to make some compromises. at the end of the week when negotiators meet. >> you mentioned that additional assets cnn is reporting that the defense department is sending a submarine to the middle east. >> austin ordered the submarine into the waters of the middle east. the pentagon said the moon movement of us missile submarines rarely revealed publicly. and the nuclear-powered vessels operate in near complete secrecy. it's described as a clear message of deterrence to iran and its proxies will go the u.s. and israel believe are preparing

desantis just a few months before so i think this is a shift on how donald trump is thinking, but trump is actually following musk because musk has shifted towards his camp. trump's now inviting him. >> so what, what's going on with the money? because there was also this point where musk pledged like he was like $45 billion a month. between now and then and then he's sort of backed away from that in the wake of those switch at the top of the democratic ticket, what is the actual plan? >> yes. so it was reported that elon musk was going to be investing 45 million a month to the trump campaign what we know is happening is that elon musk along with some other tech billionaire investors have created a pac political action committee that supports trump, but he doesn't necessarily confirm the report states putin 45 million in if i had to guess, cassie, i think a lot of it is semantics. he's probably putting money into the pac, which isn't going the campaign itself, which is why he's able to say that those reports are incorrect, but that's my assumption here what do you expect out of this conversation that we're going to see tonight on twitter well, for one, i think it's going to be a very

lighthearted conversation because elon musk has come out and endorsed donald trump. i expect this to be a bromance type of an interview where they're supporting each other. i think that elon musk will let donald trump speak all of the falsehoods and misinformation that he wants. i mean, he's not a journalist, it's not his job necessarily. does he want to be fact checking all the information? so i think it's just a platform for donald trump to come out say whatever he wants. but the thing to remember kessie is the interview audience here is what donald trump needs. you see j.d. vance going on face the nation right? sunday shows traditional media because he needs gets his name out there. >> and donald trump's going the opposite route, right? >> he's talking to dreamers and podcasters. he's going on x. he wants to rally up that sort of fringe online base. that's what donald trump is doing here tonight. >> well, he's meanwhile threatening to sue establishment media like the new york times, et cetera. sara fischer for us this morning, sara, thank you. i appreciate all right. >> time now for sports, the paris olympics may be over, but the controversy over the gymnastics floor exercise
