the tunnels, in terms of their supplies, in terms of the rocket supplies, i disagree with new york times. i think militarily to destroy the hamas infrastructure israel still has a long way to go yes, we know the tunnel structure fast and a lot to go there. general kimmitt, it's great to see you as always, kim. thank you as well thank you both a new hour of cnn news central starts now good morning, everyone. i'm john berman with sara sinder. we are in chicago. kate bolduan is in new york. we are getting new details about this day of the democratic national convention coming in and we just learned that donald trump's former press secretary, stephanie grisham, and i said that, right. donald trump's former aides, stephanie grisham, she will
6:01 am
address best the democratic national convention. so that's a thing also a thing tonight will be former president barak obama, someone who will be familiar to many people in the room here, they will have seen him before, also former first lady michelle obama and the current second gentleman, doug emhoff, who is looking to move up or wrong on that land i'm second so it was just a few hours ago that president biden delivered his speech, just after he walked up to that microphone. actually, just before he was actually wiping appear hears this was an emotional moment morocco i spent my lifetime to serve as your president i love the job but i love my country more
6:02 am
there was so much support for him, but also they are happy that he has handed the mantle over to kamala harris and you saw that there was also a heated attacks, of course, over and over again on donald trump with the sprinkle of self-deprecating humor donald trump calls america failing nation no i'm sorry think about this think about this. >> he publicly says the whole world i'm going to say something outrageous. i know more foreign leaders by their first names and know them well than anybody live just because i'm so old and i'm not joking they get a message he sends around the world he talks about america being a fairly nation. he says, we're losing. he's the loser. he's dead wrong jassa, cnn, senior political analyst, mark preston joining us now mark did joe biden do
6:03 am
what he needed to do for kamala harris? >> last night he certainly did. >> and he's wakes up this morning in california, if it talks about turning the page on the democratic party, he came here last night, how to swallow his pride, went on stage in actually addressed all of the controversy about his decision to leave the race, said it was his own decision, any hold no grudges against anybody. now, if that's the case, he is a better person than i am because i couldn't imagine being in the position that he was in last night. again, the first day he stands on that stage on the first night, he was supposed to be there thursday night, but again, he'll be in california for the rest of the week. watching the convention, but he did pass the torch to camo harris. and of course we saw these moments before he gave this speech with kamala harris as well going out and in greeting him and hugging him in showing that these two are team i guess a difference mark
6:04 am
between you and the president is that you're from massachusetts, his from delaware. >> i mean, you come in with a garage let me absolutely off course so we had a lot of people on this morning. one of the things i think people have noticed more is that last night, all the many hours of it focused on the base, perhaps of the democratic party. how much do you think the focus needs to shift to maybe? independent voters never trump republicans over the next few days. and how do you think the harris campaign intends to do that okay. >> so it's a really good question. and look, we have three more days left. so the democratic party, which we know is really governed by its constituency he's they hold a whole lot of power, a whole lot of sway. that's why we're seeing, such a play to them. and we saw that last night, doug emhoff giving the speech tonight, israel interesting, he's not giving it on thursday night introducing his wife to the nation, roy cooper is going to do that. he is the
6:05 am
democratic governor in north carolina. he was on shortlist to be potentially a running mate. but more importantly, he is a white male and i tell you, i think that that was a strategic decision that on thursday night, roy cooper would be the one introducing kerr. but you're right about the base the fact is, is that we've seen over the past 15 to 30 days is this excitement from young voters, from voters of color in certainly from the union side of things. and we saw you know the union representation in here last night and that's what they need on election day in order to get the vote out and what have you mark and i don't think i've ever thought i'd see a day where you had to point out that a white male with speaking on a presidential platform convention. >> i mean, it really, it really says a lot about what is happened over these many years. mark preston. thank you so much appreciate your time this morning, right with us now is cnn senior political
6:06 am
commentator who will serve as a host tonight at the democratic national convention. and navarro most certainly not a white male or not a white male, as you correctly, a firebrand. >> in fact, check what are the way the term, i think the correct political term is white dude. i told mark preston today he's just he's doing there's all if i can speak on behalf will answer it. anything. but a banana. you say you're not you're not a white due to white male. one thing you we're for a long time is the republican. i mean, i met you. you were working for jeb bush and mitt romney and john mccain like you're running the show here tonight at the convention. what does that say? >> look you know, yesterday when joe biden was speaking and he had that moment, i loved my job, but i love my country more. and i think people need to heed those words. we need to love our country more so for me, when donald trump became
6:07 am
the nominee, when donald trump, it was clear he was going to win. that was it for me? i didn't need to see him for four years. i saw him come down an escalator and i knew exactly who he was. i remember my angelou's words when they show you who they are, believe them the first time now, and i did. and so this is a guy who went against the disabled who once they against immigrants who went against mexicans, who went against women we heard him on tape boast about sexual assault. how was that not the end of donald trump with a party that claims to be about family values. we saw him, mark a disabled person. i have a disabled brother. how was not the end of how was that not the end of donald? trump with the republican party, supposedly about christian values. so i broke with donald trump. i broke with the republican party, the trump party way back then, and having look back and frankly, i did all i could to get joe biden elected. joe biden as a man. i've known for over 20 some years i was so
6:08 am
glad to see him get his flowers yesterday. and i am incredibly excited, elated to help my girl, kamala accept the nomination here today. i've known her for about seven years and i she's my friend i am thrilled to see that america is getting to see the kamala harris. i have known because i think for the last set for a couple of years, there they tried to define her as what she's not and i'm loving seeing this optimism, there's hope. this joy laughter, things you don't see in republican convention. i'm like i'm struck by the contrast, right? you go to the republican convection and it's gloom and doom and fear and distress and division. this is a party, this is a celebration of democracy. this is channeling optimism. i am beyond myself to have this role today because because i'm
6:09 am
a little refugee, girl who fled communism and nicaragua i just wish my mom was here to see it wow. you are getting emotional this has been an emotional time for a lot of people watching this. yeah, immigration is on very much on people's minds how does kamala harris deal with this particular issue? should she should she address it? here? because it is such a big issue, the economy and immigration time and again in polling is something that people talk about and they're worried about it look kamala harris, first of all, it was not the border saw, right? >> that's an that's a misnomer that republicans have tried to put on her. i think she needs to talk about the complexity of the immigration issue is not a problem that was created in one year or four years. it's been decades in the making. and i think she needs to turn it around and put a lot of blame on donald trump. we had an immigration deal. we had an immigration deal and it was
6:10 am
donald trump picking up the phone and calling senators. and telling them not to vote for that deal because it would help joe biden, who was in nominee at the time and hurt him. is what put the kibosh on that deal. so hold them accountable for what they've done, which has continued using the immigration issue for political fodder shaman them because we need a solution. >> so you said you love donald trump long ago and the republican party as well, but i think he probably still, i'm still a registered republican you still speak republican, right. so i am curious for the remaining three days of the democratic convention, if there are things you think that the democrats should avoid, or if there's a certain way that they should speak to republican or independent voters out there you know what, don't overthink it. >> people need to speak from the heart. i think the recent that this campaign has captured lightning in a bottle. and the last four weeks, it's because it's been organic, because it's been authentic, because it's been joyful. people want
6:11 am
to join because you want to be part of the excitement you want to be part of the party, you want to be party of the happiness, right? and enthusiasm is contagious. so forget the focus groups, forget overthinking it. just be real talk from the heart. there's enough to say and have fun doing it, have fun doing it. what this campaign has shown in the last four weeks is that you can you can you can win. you can make progress and you can do it while still having fun and being authentic. that's what i would say to democrats and anybody listening i just want to know the phone call that came like, how did this happen that you are you are now run of show. you're the lady in charge doing pushing this through. how did that happen? >> i'm not sure if i'm in charge of much bus they are believe me, there's a lot of people in charge of me, but i got a phone call asking me reminded me of what it had been like for years ago. four years ago, the four hosts had been my

forceful, affirmation supporting vice president kamala harris with us now is someone who knows the former president, former white house press secretary under president obama, josh earnest, who is now the executive vice president of communications and advertising at united airlines here in chicago. great to see you. >> it's good to see you, john president obama's used to big speeches. he's given a few of them, given some really big ones that conventions day all the way back to 2004 in boston what is it you think that he wants slash needs to do here tonight for harris book the speech that everybody remembers when it comes to obama convention speeches as 2000 for the very first one and i think a lot of the themes that he delivered in that speech in 2004 are the same kinds of themes that you're going to hear tonight. one, themes that are around hope and optimism about the idea that in this big diverse country, there's actually a whole lot more that we have in common than divides us that was 20 years ago now, which is kind of crazy to thank but even 20 years later, those themes are resonant. i think
6:39 am
they are animating particular to the people in this room tonight. and i think they're really important for the country so i don't think it's gonna be the same speech, but i think you're gonna hear the same kinds of themes there's also no doubting the president, the former president's commitment to kamala harris and his enthusiasm for her campaign. >> i'm curious, what does just to bring things down. sorry what relationship want want is with joe biden now and what it was. can you give us some some sense of what it was and what how things may have changed just because with all the reporting that has been done but he has been hurt if not angry, but at least hurt by what happened and how he was sort of pushed aside and then made the decision. yeah. >> well, full disclosure. i haven't talked to either of these gentlemen in the last six weeks, but what i will say say is what you know, people know, people for better or worse their family. >> and i that was something that became really clear,
6:40 am
particularly in the last few years when they were in the white house together. and i think like any family, they're gonna be some disagreements. they are going to be times when there's more attention. but there's nothing that is ever going to undermine the core of their relationship. would they accomplish together professionally, but also the kinds of things they persevered through together personally. and i just i don't think that there's anything that is going to disrupt that. what i think is also true is you have to get if enormous credit for the selflessness and statesmanship of president biden. the truth is, and i think this is true of politicians in both parties there's a small percentage of sitting politicians in both parties that would have done what he did, which is to completely sacrifice his lifelong ambition to serve another four years in the white house. because for one reason, because it was in the best interests of the united states of america. that's why he made that decision. and not many
6:41 am
politicians would do that and he deserves all the credit that is getting. he got he deserves all the credit he got last night and he's going to deserve all the credits going to get in months ahead. >> i mean, one of the reasons they get to where they get to is they're not the type of person who would do that. it'd be blind that we had to have it right now. >> you have to have you have to have an ego to do this job. >> no doubt. but the ability to balance those two things and not lose in the face of that ego to not lose sight of why you're actually in it is, i think one of it's going to go down as one of the hallmarks of joe biden's character who does president obama speak to now in 2024, countries different i mean, it's different than it certainly wasn't. oh, for 040012 the last time he ran so who's the gettable audience for him that may not now be a harris voter. >> yeah. well i think it clearly is young people. those are the people that democrats have to find the way to engage and motivate the vast majority
6:42 am
of those voters. if we can engage them and motivate them to show up at the polls. they're going to pull the lever for kamala harris and tim walz. there's no doubt about that so i don't think that while brock obama is now 20 years older than he was when he spoke at the first convention. he still has an appeal among younger voters and his ability to motivate them, to inspire them. i mean, nobody is better given these big speeches and really summoning a big emotional moment barack obama. and that will be the task that he has tonight. but and to do that in a way that is not about him, but about kamala harris and about the country. i think will be the challenge. and i think he's up for i'm assuming if you were communications director, right now and you looked across what the democrats are doing, are the mistakes being made or i mean, they biden bloggers, they've i mean, there was a lot of different folks here and influencers and are very young. what have you seen online that gives you some hope that they are reaching those young yeah. >> well, look, i do know some
6:43 am
of the people who are running the convention and i think they have done a tremendous job of really trying to pull together some of the classic elements that you see he had irregular convention here we are talking about the landline telephones, delegations there right to their there's there's the nod to that tradition, but they've got the creators podium out there where they're really encouraging providing a literal platform for tik-tokers and other people with a large online presence to talk about what they're doing at the convention. i think it's a really smart way to engage people that otherwise may never see content from this room so i think they've done a tremendous job of trying to like not to that tradition, but really acknowledged that we've got to reach people in a different way than we have before. >> josh harris. great to see you. thanks. i guess it is airlines i was going to say you've probably been on thank you so much for coming in next time. i'm going to talk to you about my flight, so i'll leave that alright. >> unprecedented action, access to the action at the democratic national convention for who you

the real value from your life insurance when you need it with abacus on stephanie elam and los angeles. >> and this is cnn so in the audience and on the stage at the democratic convention is not just delegates and big name politicians also taking center stage. >> now, our social media influencers. the harris campaign making room for hundreds of content creators and influencers and an effort to connect with younger voters. the dnc is giving credentials
6:49 am
to creators for the first time. one of those influencers is the man you're seeing on some of his content right there. carlos eduardo espina, an immigrant rights activists with more than 10 million tiktok followers. he's set to speak on the convention's stage tomorrow night and carlos joins us now, carlos, thank you so much. we were talking in the break, but i really do appreciate your time this morning, especially after a late night, the new york times calls you, says that you have become something of a quote, unquote, one man telemundo for millions of latinos in the united states. and you're speaking on the stage tomorrow night. what's going to be your message? >> well, yes, tomorrow i'm going to be speaking specifically on the issue of immigration and pushing back on this narrative, right. that to be pro-america, you have to be anti-immigrant my message is the exact opposite to be pro-immigrant is to b-roll america the history of the united states is always embodied immigration and not just as a democrat but as a republican value as well. i mean, look, ronald reagan's
6:50 am
last speech as president, he talked about the importance of immigration. and that's really the message i've sent on social media for the past four years that i think has resonated with so many lives tino, so many immigrants here in the united states. and i'm just really excited to be here and be able to share some of that same message with an audience who perhaps doesn't know who i am or doesn't think the same way you have more than as i mentioned, you have more than 10 million followers on tiktok. you understand the power of the platform for better and well, you know some things on tiktok dark for worse, but that's what i'm something no, you're right, you're right. >> what role do you think social media overall will play in this election? >> well, i think it will play a huge role specifically with the convention today. i don't have the numbers, but i would assume a vast majority of people what they consume from the convention won't actually be from television. it will be from clips and not just from content creators like myself but also, you know, cnn is on social media a lot of traditional news networks, or on social media. and i think everyone understands that
6:51 am
nowadays is just a little bit more convenient, easier access. so not just for the convention, but thinking ahead of the election, there's many people who get almost 100% of their information from social media. as you mentioned, that's not necessarily always a good thing, but it's a reality and we have to deal so with them. so i think it's really important, you know, to focus on content creators and those who are on social media, because we're really going to be some of the key players in this election to make sure people turn out to vote. the way they vote that kind of thing. so yeah, i think it's going to be huge. >> donald trump has made big gains with latino voters over the years we're looking back at the numbers again this morning from 2016 team, he got 28% of the latino vote 2020, he got 32% in the latest new york times, sienna college poll, trump has 38% support versus harris is the 7% support among latino voters. clearly, she has more support, but you see the gains that donald trump is making why is he making gains from your perspective? >> well, from my perspective, i think it's a couple of things that main reason being economic
6:52 am
issues and then some social issues as well that maybe latinos feel like the desert the crowds have been addressed properly. and i think that the democrats have kind of picked up on that. if you see the economic plan that kamala harris announced earlier this week, a lot of it does address these issues tuesday's income for madi's, i think for too long there's been a misconception that latinos are going to vote democrat regardless, are there only one issue voters on immigration? but i think we started to realize that they care about a lot of those things. and then there's also the role of, you know campaign strategies may be latinos haven't been targeted as they should like i said, i've also gotten in the sense that they've started to pick up on that. and then just the reality is that there is a large section of the latino community who is conservative in many aspects. if all latinos were liberal progressive, you wouldn't have conservative presidents in latin america. so the reality is we are in a monolith. there are a lot of different ways of thinking and the latino community. and i
6:53 am
think those gains have been real, but i also think that democrats have finally figured out a better strategy to counteract them and hopefully make some gains as well. >> real quick, carlos harris was tasked by biden to tackle the root causes of migration in central america. her leadership role though, is something that republicans have really jumped on, calling her the biden borders are blaming, are for the problems at the southern border, even if the moniker or is misplaced, how big of a problem is that perception do you think for harris i think it's a a very unfair perspective, but i think like you said, it's real. >> people genuinely believe that. but if you look into as she was never the border czar or whatever the title was given, she was given like you said, the role to address root causes of migration, which by the way, i think she did a relatively good job you look at the record and how things have happened because nowadays, she was tasked with the northern triangle. it's sort of a lot of what they might do those countries which if you look right now, are really the main drivers of immigration that's mostly venezuela, colombia, other countries. now, the issue on the board, right thing for a
6:54 am
long time, democrats made the mistake of kind of ignoring it, are now focusing on foley kind of thinking it would solve itself. i think now there has been a shift in the narrative and like i said, i think it's been a learning period where democrats have started to tackle head on a lot of these issues that people were worried about. and i think they're on a better path now for sure and a lot of the very issues that you're talking about all the time on your accounts. it's great to meet you, carlos. thanks so much. i'm looking forward to seeing what you have to say on the stage tomorrow night. >> thank you. thank you. thank you. >> have a gun. >> so it is the strangest of fact checks, but we live in the realm of strange these days. so here we go, donald trump touting what would be a seriously big endorsement posting on social media. i accept alongside images of taylor swift as illegal sam and this taylor swift, once you to vote for donald trump know taylor swift has not endorsed donald trump. yes. those images are a.i. manipulated cnn's elizabeth wagmeister joins us now with more on this. so maybe donald trump was attempting, it
6:55 am
was his attempt at satire maybe not, but it's still what is going on here. >> the fact of the matter is you're absolutely right. kate taylor swift has not endorsed trump. she has not endorsed anyone. this presidential cycle. now, most of the photos that trump reposted our a.i. so if you look at those photos, you see what appeared here's to be fans and they're wearing shirts that say swifties for trump. most of those are a.i. generated their fake, they're not real. now there is one photo of a fan, a young woman who is wearing a shirt that says swifties for trump sheet is real. now that young woman has actually spoken out and she says the media is missing the point here by focusing so much on these a.i. images, you're missing out on the fact that there are millions of trump's boarders who are also taylor swift fans. there's many swifties who do have conservative values. now, i have to tell you that trump, aside from that post, his campaign is really leaning into this and appears to be capitalize rising are trying to
6:56 am
capitalize off of this swiftie fandom because his spokesperson has told us that the swifties for trump movement is massive and it grows every single day. so remains to be seen whether or not taylor will make an endorsement if at all or if taylor swift has anything to say even about what we're talking about right here? >> i believe that she has not said kind things about trump in the past. she's made it very clear what her views on him in 2020, she endorsed joe biden, very clearly on social media. it's great to see you. thank you so much. and thank you all so much for joining us. cnn newsroom is next comedy, u.s. >> coming cnn. >> what could go wrong i got news for you for me or saturday, september 14th at nine on cnn knock, knock. number one, broker here for the number one hitmaker. >> thanks for swinging by carl. no problems. so this is me just
