>> i am bipartisan agreement, nonpartisan agreement. women far smarter than men. just saying, frankie, but mostly exact. this gets to key question latinos do vote on all issues and care about all issues. but we know that there is going to be amongst other issues are focus on immigration tonight. we know where donald trump stands on immigration. we have also seen republicans, democrats, especially in the last year in becoming more hawkish, more aggressive and more on offense when it comes to border security do you have a concern that there could be a view that while moving more towards i'm just going to use the broad strokes language more to the right on immigration and border security that could threaten support on the left well, while we filed on our survey, is that when we ask the question about who is going to provide a humane treatment to
6:01 am
immigrants that are already here. >> which candidate is going to provide a solution to a broken immigration system, which is the candidate that will represent the interests of the immigrant community by far kamala harris is coming above donald trump in the our survey, so what we're seeing is that latinos understand that the traits and the policies that are humane, that is about family unification, that is about the values of our community are trending much, much higher with kamala harris, this is an opportunity also because doing our poll, we also find that because of the short term of these new announcements, many latino still want to hear more about policy policy platform for kamala harris ticket. so this is the opportunity to solidify that and to give some of the answers that our people are looking for. but by far, when it comes to traits and policy
6:02 am
about our broken immigration system, canada harris fairs much better at this one go ahead. one of the things that it's, it's also clear, it's our viewers, latinos for immigration. there are people who are concerned about the border. in fact, 20% of latino said they were concerned about what's happening in the border. but the same amount we're concerned about a path to legalization for the millions are here without papers because we know that when trump talks about mass deportation, he's going to round up all of us we live in communities where you don't know who has papers and who doesn't. they're going to be looking at those by the color of our skin. and that's how they're going to make it determinations. >> and when you've got i mean, the key question will be and we will all see it together is what does the turnout look like? where does the support land when from 2016, he was donald trump at 28, obviously, democrat democrats had far
6:03 am
more, but he's, you've seen this gain amongst latino support for republicans, specifically donald trump in the last two cycles and. we will see what that turnout and what that support looks like this time, gentlemen. thank you very much for coming in. a new hour of cnn. new central starts now all right. hello, everyone. i'm john berman with sara seidner in chicago, kate bolduan is in new york and while we're keeping track of who people are and where they are, minnesota governor tim walz is also here in chicago ago because this is his day at the convention that is correct. but first, john, i am surprised we still have a roof over our head because michelle obama blew most of it all with her speech and then her husband, barak obama, took care of the rest back to back to back moments from the former

electrified it last night. >> is sets the stage, as you noted, for michelle obama in barak obama to come in and provide some definition to what we've seen in this excitement for the democratic party over the past 30 days. >> now, we know barack obama is so good at delivering speeches but it was his wife, as you noted, who tore the roof off last night let's listen to what she had to say and we've got to do if we say a bad poll and we when we got them put down that phone and do something we start feeling tired if we start feeling that dread creeping back in, we got to pick ourselves up, throw water on her face and what we only have two-and-a-half months. >> y'all, to get this done so as i talk about given direction in definition to this excitement, democrats 30, 35

days ago, we're in a totally different situation as we all recall. >> the excitement behind joe biden's candidacy was just not there. we are seeing that now with camila harris, i have to say though i got to tell you what would be exhausting to be in the middle of a fight between michelle obama in barak obama, because they're both good or raters. i mean, i wouldn't i wouldn't know how to deal with that, but i got to tell you what the excitement that the democrats have been building up over the past month or so. it is now here as we stand in chicago former president obama knows exactly how to deal with it. you bow down. that's what you do and that's what he did last night. he was like, i'm the guy that has to follow michelle obama. this is hard mark preston, great to see you. thank you very much. with us. now, here is congresswoman mikie sherrill, democrat from new jersey. thank you so much for being with us this morning. you've been here with us for a few minutes watching in when we said that today is governor tim walz his day. i saw you
6:07 am
nodding. what are you looking forward to? >> what do you need to hear from the governor? >> oh, my gosh. i think i just want to hear from the governor what i've been hearing from the governor, he is such a great public servant which speaks to my own heart as a veteran, he served for 24 years in the national guard, 20 years as an edge cater, a football coach who thought that hit was his job as the macho football coach who won the state championship to make sure he was taking care of all the kids and form the gay straight alliance at his high school i mean, there's just not much this guy doesn't offer and i want to hear it all tonight. i am so excited to hear from you brought up the fact that he's a veteran, he's a coach he's he wears a lot of hats, a lot of flannel, and a lot of flesh, apparently his wife confirming that he still had a lot of those shirts and that they have been worn but there has been an attack after attack, after attack about his time serving a few different things that they have gone after about some of
6:08 am
the things he has said about leaving when he did after 24 years of service, what do you think that that has done? has that resonated with the public because it's only about what 1% of the people in the united states citizens here actually do serve never mind, in list. >> you know, i don't think it takes serving in our military to understand that somebody who devoted 24 years to the national guard, who did so while as kids were young who year after year really took care of the men and women in the national guard and then decided not to simply retire as he would have yeah, they certainly could have as many people do after 20 years in our military. but to actually then go on to serve again and congress to serve on the veterans affairs committee and i just i mean, tim walz is someone so special. i have to tell you here is a new jersey congresswoman i did not know. i
6:09 am
needed someone raised on a farm to be our vice president's man. i feel great about it. i am so excited. >> one of the things that's interesting is though she has been vice president then for four years and in the public eye for a few more years than that in the polls, people say they still need to know more. they would like to know more about vice president harris what do you think needs to be conveyed here in the next tonight's what's missing. >> i think i think people need to see what so many of us have seen for years when i was at the munich security conference for the past two years to see camila harris take the stage to see her state and before our allies and our adversaries
6:10 am
>> to know that even as, as i was there at the munich security conference with nancy pelosi with a lot of our generals and nato allies, that she was behind the scenes negotiating for the release of the prisoners from putin with chancellor schulz. so we see somebody who has that gravitas i want the rest of the world to see it. >> congressman cheryl, thank you so much for getting up early and hanging out. >> i don't know if people at home realize what a marathon, the democratic national convention is. i, i left early at a jersey of that last night and early meant that i was leaving at one in the morning so yes, i hear you. i'm doing a lot of this part of the boot camp. you maybe less sleep. i feel like that might be there's a view campaigning and maybe a little less sleep here. she would the great thank you, chris thank you, okay. all right. thanks, guys. so after years of pushing conspiracy
6:11 am
theories bruce, about barak obama throwing insults and his family, donald trump, sounds different today. i want to play what he said to cnn's christian homes about the former president while campaigning in michigan i, like him. >> i think he's a nice gentleman, but it was very, very weak on trade. if you take a look at what happened to our country trade wise, it was a disaster. the take a look at japan, take a look at china, take a look at what happened with some of these countries. what they did but i happen to like him. i respect him and i respect his wife donald trump is back on the campaign trail again today, making continuing his tour of battleground states. >> today he'll be in north carolina along with his running mate, jd vance, seen as alayna treene is tracking this for us what are you expecting from donald trump today? and what do you make of what he said about evbuomwan well, i'm going to start with your second part of that question. >> i mean, it was remarkable to hear what he told kristen holmes. of course, those comments came before the obamas took the stage last night and lobbed their own criticisms at the former president. but it's very different. i mean,
6:12 am
honestly a complete turnaround from the rhetoric we have come to expect from donald trump when it comes to the obamas, of course, he had long claimed that or try to undermine obama's legacy, claimed that he had or blamed him really i should say for some of the problems that trump faced when he was president and course he was one of the biggest promoters of the birther conspiracies against obama, essentially having asserted for years that perhaps he wasn't eligible to be president. so a very different tune from donald trump when it came to barak obama yesterday. but i do want to turn your attention to what we expect from donald trump today. he is a backup on the campaign trail. of course, this is part of his week long sprint to try and counter program against harris, even though kate i can tell you from my conversations with trump's senior advisers that they recognize they're not getting a lot of media attention this week. that's why they're actually holding their events earlier in the day at 3pm rather than when, you know? normally see trump, which is
6:13 am
around primetime, they recognize they can't compete with some of the high profile speakers lined up this week at the convention. but today he will be, he will be with vance in asheville, north carolina. what's fascinating about this is that this is donald trump's third stop in north carolina since joe biden ended his campaign, roughly a month ago which again, for someone like donald trump who doesn't campaign as often as a traditional presidential candidate, that is huge. and i think it underscores how important they view this state. remember, donald trump and joe biden were very close in north carolina in 2020 joe biden lost by roughly 74,000 points which was pretty remarkable. so this is a state that they really want to make sure that they can win particularly with harris kind of closing the polls in that state, you're going to see a big push on that. they're talking about national security are going to try to see donald trump stay on message. we'll see if he succeeds exactly. >> we shall see together, it's great to see you, alayna, thank you. >> coming up for us happening.

of trying to pit the politics of compassion versus the politics of combat. >> now, the country is angry and there are people who do want combat because they are put out the government, they don't think the government can help obama talked about this are people who don't believe the government can help or that the government is inherently corrupt. and there are a lot of americans who feel like after everything they've been through economically, that that is exactly the condition they're in. and so what i think the obamas were betting on is that there's slightly more than 50% of the people that'll go for this. and then they're slightly less than 50% that will go for the politics that cam. i don't know who's going to be right, but to me it is a stark contrast. but i do think there are a lot of americans who don't want to, they don't want to hear it because they feel like they have been absolutely beaten down for years between covid and inflation can and everything else. and they're not here to be uplifted there, here to be rescued and that will be i think how trump tries to combat it. >> scott jennings, ashley allison, take this moment where you agree? we spend some go for

that unites us than divides us. there are things we have to address, right? there's a lot more work to do, but campaigns who your reference before it's a little like tom sawyer convincing people that it's fun to paint that fence it's not always fun. it's hard work. you have to leave your family, knock on, doors, get on phones it's stressful. it's but there's a part of it that can be very dynamic. and i think last night feeds into that you're not just part of something you're part of something bigger than yourself. and it has a historical quality. i think you're starting to see that move coming from chicago congressman mike quigley from chicago. thanks so much for being with us morning. appreciate it thank you was michael jordan, by the way, who i was hoping that you would say it. and i think you know, i was i was i wasn't even dealing american voter alright. >> as much as the dnc focused

walz will take the mainstage to formally accept his party's nomination for vice president. it will be a major moment for the minnesota governor has been thrust into the national spotlight since becoming camila harris, his running mate just a few short weeks ago cnn's manu raja through joins us now what the few short weeks, what a change we have seen, what was your takeaway from last night? yeah. >> it is really remarkable. just the unity that we're seeing in this democratic convention. how could you imagine what this convention would have looked like if it was joe biden as the nominee, they had had to try to make the case because for him they would have been a lot of people not happy concerned about it going forward, but with kamala harris, it has changed completely the challenge for tim walz. now it's a risk and an opportunity really to define himself in the eyes of the american public, we have seen public polls really not know anything about who this man is, who wants to be vice president tonight? so what will he do?
6:45 am
what will come a harris do even harris herself, i mean, the new york times sienna poll from over the weekend, a third of voters have no idea what she would do as president of the united states. the question that i have is, does this convention answer that question? what exactly will they do for the country they've effectively? made the argument about why donald trump should not be in the white house, especially the obama's last night did just that. but what will their agenda be going forward? that's going to be a challenge for tim walz tonight. >> it's great to have you here monitor with us on cnn news central. we're lucky to have the anchor of inside politics sunday here in given that is such a way you're occurrence, i do want to know what you think the most important thing left to do is at this confession. >> yeah, that's good question. i think it is the independent moderate swing voters who are going to decide this election. but we've seen vincent very clear since harris has gotten in the race, she's got the coalition back. she has got the
6:46 am
base back. we're seeing numbers grow with young voters, with black voters, with hispanic voters getting to the levels where joe biden was. but there is still sizable amount of voters, particularly those battleground states, according to the polls that think she's too liberal they are concerned about our policies on the economy and immigration coming in donald. trump was winning in those key issues, which is a big reason why a lot of those republicans say focus on policies not personality, don't make this a personality contest. so can she make that pivot to the middle? it's to some extent. will those disaffected republican and independent leaning republican voters that's a big question manu raju we could talk to you all day and we just might times. >> careful. thank you so much for coming in early this morning, hanging out with us. >> you got it. thank so vice president harris wins the united states would have its first first. and gentlemen in history and doug emhoff, son had a chance to introduce his father to the contrary the glue

talking about the contagious our of hope former first lady michelle obama. there definitely a star of the night on the stage last night, not only bringing back a word synonymous with the obama campaign slogan and all law 2008, hope she also electrified the democrats that were in the audience and took on donald trump in a way, really only michelle obama can joining us right now is kate anderson brower. she is the author of first women, the grace and power of america's modern first ladies. kate, what did you see in that message in that i'll i'll call it a formats, but in her overall remarks coming for michelle obama on that stage, well, i think we saw why donald trump was really worried up. >> michelle obama potentially becoming the democratic nominee, right? it's something
6:53 am
she never wanted to do, but it was something that a lot of democrats were hopeful for. xi electrified the crowd i think that she was able to kind of get in some jabs but also keep it about hope i think they're walking that delicate line where it's about hope and the future, but also this is a really scary prospect for a lot of democrats to think about donald trump coming back to the white house and you could see it the birther. conspiracy theories. they still burn very strong in the obama household and there's a lot of personal really bad blood and animosity there and she's very, very concerned that he could win. so this is about getting people to the polls. >> yeah, let me play some of what you're getting at and the way that she did not hold back and taking on donald trump in her own way. watch this for years. donald trump did everything in his power to try to make people fear us here's
6:54 am
his limited narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hard work and highly educated, successful so people happen to be black tell them who's going to tell him that the job he's currently seeking might just be one of those black job if they don't go our way. we don't have the luxury of whining or cheating others to get further ahead, know we don't get to change the rules, so we always win it she says in if we don't have an escalator to ride up to help us. >> if we don't win. a former top democratic party official said that this showed that she'd been waiting for years to give this kind of speech he's michelle obama unique in her stature among former first ladies do think oh, she's absolutely unique. i mean, you know, laura bush was an authentic first lady too, but
6:55 am
she didn't mesmerize and captive hate a crowd and the way michelle obama does i mean, even barak obama said, you know, this is such a tough of act to follow and there are no other presidents that you can look at and reason history where they're actually getting fewer applause lines in energizing the crowd less than their wives. so she's just such a natural at this. and i think part of the reason why people really like her is because she's not interested in running for office. this isn't about politics for this is something she feels very deeply about, passionately about. so there's like an authentic part of that connects with people. >> talk to me about the potential next first spouse, kamala harris's husband, doug emhoff. i mean, you describe you describe the role of first lady is kind of one of the most under estimated in challenging positions in the world. and then add into, he could be a first gentlemen, what do you see? >> you know, i think that again, there was something very authentic last night when you
6:56 am
looked in the crowd and his daughter was in tears hearing about camila as mama law, right. and what all spouses do is humanize the candidate. and he was able to do that last night, in a really compelling way and he's got that goofy dad vibe that he plays off of, that really connects with people so i think it was really powerful and i can't wait if she is elected to see a man in that role to play, that supporting in position and i think it'll be really important for little girls everywhere. does he seeing that. >> again, that role now transforming in another very significant way. great to see you, kate. thank you so much. and thank you all so much for joining us today cnn newsroom is up next an alternative to pills. walter iran is a clinically proven arthritis pain relief gel which penetrates deep to target the source of pain with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine directly at the source voltage. erin the joy of
