this is cnn closed captioning is brought to you by sokoloff law mesothelial more victims call now 30 billion in trust money has been set aside. >> you may be entitled to a portion of that money. all when 8085920400. that's when 808, five-nine, 2,400 a critical test, no teleprompter, know cheering crowd just vice president kamala harris, her running mate, governor tim walz, and cnn's dana a bash asking the tough questions. the first sit down interview these two have had since becoming the democratic presidential ticket. plus a strong rebuke for the trump campaign. us army accusing the former president's staff of ignoring the law and honored tradition during an appearance at arlington national cemetery one of the country's most sacred spaces and new details in the planned terror attack against the taylor swift concert, the
12:01 pm
cia says it helped prevent the plot, which was designed to kill tens of thousands as a people. we're following these major developing stories and many more all coming in right here to cnn news central so. just a couple of hours from now, vice president kamala harris will take the stage for a rally in savannah, georgia the final stop of her bus tour through a critical battleground state. it comes ahead of her exclusive interview with cnn's dana bash, which airs tonight at 9:00 p.m. eastern right here on cnn harris will be joined by her running mate, minnesota governor tim walz their first interview with a major television network, and the first chance for americans to see and hear them respond to important questions facing the country. this all happening as a new fox news poll shows harris surging in georgia.orgia here's how fox news described the stakes and that important
12:02 pm
battleground state last night if that lead holds she wins georgia. she wins the presidency cnn's priscilla alvarez is in savannah, georgia following the harris campaign priscilla, what more do we know about what the vice president is up to today? one vice president is expected to do two more stops on her bus tour today, going to small businesses before she comes the arena where i am am or people are feeling into watch her speak at a rally. this is how lloyd have bookend what has been a notable trip for this campaign as they try to seal off voters from republicans in the southern part of the state but of course, she's also going to be, as you mentioned been participating in that high-stakes interview alongside her vice presidential nominee tim walz and the reason that this has become such a critical moment in interview for the two of them is because this
12:03 pm
campaign up until this point has been quite choreographed, is scripted, starting only over a month ago. so this offers them an opportunity to answer candidly to questions and do so on scripted, referred to make her case why she has the credentials to be the president, to draw a stark contrast from former president huddled trump and were necessary explain her evolutions on certain policies or distinctions with president joe biden. so there will be a lot of observers watching that interview. tonight. and i'm told by sources that she did prepare extensively for it as she has done with other major interviews. but again, boris, this is a rally that is again, going to end what has been a significant visit by her in her vice presidents nominee to try an aggressive strategy in this crucial battleground state. because as you mentioned, while polls show he has a slight edge over former president donald trump it's still within the margin of error, so the campaign is keenly aware that they still have a ways to go is going to be a close race again,
12:04 pm
a state that president biden only won by less than 12 well thousand votes. so the vice president ending her trip here in this arena where you busy people behind me are trickling in another, exciting probably for the voters that have been here talking to us. >> never music quite loud. there are still alvarez. thank you so much from savannah brown. >> so any moment now, former president trump will be speaking at a campaign event in michigan where we were told that he'll focus on the economy. these are live pictures coming to who is from michigan by the way. his campaign however, is having to answer for an incredibly lewd and sexist post that trump shared on his truth social site steve contorno is in michigan where the former president is scheduled to speak steve, the campaign desperately wants trump on message and yet here we are and yet donald trump's social media feed has a very different message than the
12:05 pm
academy or jobs or inflation or immigration those issues were the campaign feels like it's on solid ground instead, his social media feed over the last 48 hours has been very much on the attack. >> let me run-through for you just a few of the posterior shared with his very large audience there. and one, he calls for january 6 members committee members, to go on trial and other posts he shared, said there should be military tribunals for former president obama. there are references to the bizarre conspiracy theory around child sex rings. referencing q anon. there's a picture of biden and harris and other politicians in orange jumpsuits and yes. as you mentioned, there was a picture of vice president harris and secretary secretary clinton with a comment on it, that reference alludes sex act. and when earlier today on cnn, the trump campaign was asked about these truth social posts. here's what they said i don't know if the present even saw the comment that was on there, simply the picture, but i would
12:06 pm
say with regard to kamala harris, the attacks that had been levied by kamala harris's, both the campaign by harris allies against president trump, not just recently, but over the past year-and-a-half, two years, ever since he came down the escalator, quite frankly in the case of many left-of-center people have been quite horrific. americans aren't concerned with social media posts and silly memes. they are concerned with the problems that are plaguing them in their families right now now, in many ways, these post our par for the course from what we've seen from donald trump since the days when he was still allowed and was very active on twitter. >> the difference here is it's coming after this period in which many people close to his campaign, many of his allies were urging him to, get off the personal attacks and start talking about policy. and it's also coming at a point in this race where we are seeing these polls really narrow and his support among women, especially
12:07 pm
is lagging. and that is these types of posts many people around him and his allies are worried that it will hurt him with the audiences that he is trying to reach out to at a critical stretch of the campaign here, brianna. >> yeah, it's certainly not helpful for him. steve contorno. thank you for that. live for us from michigan boris besides the controversy over trump's truth, social posts, the army is now confirming a physical altercation between the trump campaign and an employee at arlington national cemetery. >> this follows an npr report that trump campaign staff verbally abused and pushed a cemetery official who tried to stop the campaign from filming political material in section 60, an area where filming like that is banned by federal law cnn's oren liebermann is live for us at the pentagon, or in this is an unusual and stinging rebuke by the army of trump's campaign it's much more than unusual. it's quite a remarkable statement to see the army put something out like
12:08 pm
this, are rebuke of the trump campaign and a former president donald trump's visit to arlington national cemetery on specifically to section 60, but also a statement in which the armies stands up for the arlington national cemetery employee who was involved in this incident. didn't now it is worth pointing out that the army statement does not explicitly mentioned trump. instead, it references an august 26 ceremony and a subsequent visit to section 60, which exactly describes the visit of trump to arlington cemetery earlier this week. now, in that it says that arlington national cemetery made clear to the camera the pain, the rules federal laws dod policies, an army regulations surrounding a visit to arlington national cemetery. one of those explicit federal laws, and i'll read this right now. so as memorial services and ceremonies and army national military cemeteries will not include partisan, political activities. and this is worth pointing out the visit to the tomb of the unknown soldier. you saw that video a second ago. that's absolutely fine. it is the visit section
12:09 pm
60 were fallen service members from iraq and afghanistan are buried. that is where the issue is, that is where it's illegal to film political activities, partisan activities, and that's what the army says. it's occurred here. they say an arlington national cemetery employee tried to stop this from happening when she was quote, abruptly pushed aside. here is part of the statement from the army on an arlington national cemetery employee who attempted to ensure adherence to these rules was abruptly pushed aside, consistent with a decorum expected at arlington national cemetery. this employee acted with professionalism and avoided further disruption. there is a bit more of the statement here. the incident was reported to the joint base, meyer henderson hall police department about the employees subsequently decided not to press charges. this incident was unfortunate and it does also unfortunate that the arlington national cemetery employee and her professionalism has been unfairly attacked spokespeople for the trump campaign
12:10 pm
suggested this employee was a quote, despicable individual and might have mental health issues. so you see they're not only the rebuke of the campaign, but also the standing up for in the backing of the arlington employee who was involved in this boris, it is worth pointing out that the army considers the matter closed because the employee decided not to press charges here oren liebermann live from the pentagon. thank you so much. i do want to quickly point out for our viewers that the trump campaign has now responded to this rebuke. chris lacivita, that donald trump, for 2024 campaign manager posted a video of the former president's visit to arlington national cemetery on social media, quoting hoping to trigger the hacks at secc army. he tagged the account of the secretary of the u.s. army, christine wormuth. i do want to point out the video that lacivita posted to social media is the one we've seen of donald trump laying the wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier were filming was allowed. it was not from section 60 of the
12:11 pm
cemetery, which generally is off limits to campaign media by federal law. again, the trump campaign, we should note, has said that they have footage of this incident and they said that they would put it out. there was according to stephen chung of the trump campaign, but they have yet to brianna so let's talk about this now with former trump white house communications director anthony scaramucci. anthony, how are you seeing this as we see the trump campaign trying to kind of continue on with this issue, still not releasing video though of what transpired, even though they say they have it so brianna, this is a violation of norms and this is something that mr. trump has been doing for the last nine years. >> so we're talking about a he enjoys the fact that we're talking about it. airtime is being taken up at other networks, talking about this and look, it's absolutely wrong. it's despicable way to
12:12 pm
handle things but he likes the attention associated with it and he was there for that photo op. and so there's one green beret, there's a family of a deceased green beret that's very upset that they didn't get permission to use his tombstone in that photo op. but that's donald trump. that's who he is. that's what he wants to do and he wants you to talk about it and he wants that attention on him. and so this will keep going until we frankly stop talking about it, but it's a despicable thing. it's a assorted thing and you know, for whatever reasons is very large group of people in this country that don't believe the things that john kelly has said or how donald trump actually feels about the veteran community. >> do you think this is a winning issue for him because i mean, certainly on one hand many of the family members of the abbey-gate 13 feel seen by donald trump in a way they do not feel seen by president biden. that's just that's just the truth. you can talk to
12:13 pm
them. that's how they feel. but on the other hand, you have a lot of family members of people who are buried in that cemetery who do not like what went down. and they are upset about this that's certainly not something that should be seen as politically beneficial to donald trump. do you think overall this is a winning political issue for him? >> so i'm just going to speak the way the campaign thinks in the way mr. trump thinks they think it is a winning issue because it's red meat for their base. it's triggering for people that like normal things in our society. they want to be the home records, if you will. he sees himself as an orange wrecking ball and he thinks the way to win this election as to double and triple down on his base. so the real question will be, will know this in november. if other people have grown tired or this do they have trump fatigue? are there veterans out there to say, you know what, i really have had enough of this i want to return to something that's a little bit more sacred as it relates
12:14 pm
to our sacrifice in the country. but they're playing this because they know it works for their base, brianna, and i think it's important for people to understand that they don't care what normal is. what they care about is they know they've got a low ceiling. they may have a high floor he's never been able to burst through 47.5%. so he's got to do everything he can to get as many of those supporters out to the polls in november trump will be speaking on the economy this afternoon, but then that's an issue, right? >> we look at the polls. he does well on that. he is more trusted by people on on the economy than harris is. but then here in the last 24 hours, anthony on truth social, he's been focusing on qanon conspiracy theories. he's threatened to lock up his political opponents and then you have some pretty misogynistic attacks and sexual content that we can't even post. it's so inappropriate what, what do you think about that? is that something that voters are won over by well,
12:15 pm
again, listen, voters are not won over by that particularly moderate independent voters, but his team is going him and saying, hey, listen, we'd like you to be on message. >> could you stay on message on things like the economy? gracian the border. and so as hr mcmaster pointed out in his recent book, he's reflectively contrarian. so the more people tell him to stay on message, the more posts and more nonsense you're going to get out of him. so there's, there's well-documented saenz anytime you tell him to do something and go in one direction, he has this sort of bullying, rebellious streak. and so those, those posts, again, red meat for his base. they enjoy that for some reason normal people look at that and there a gas by it. and i think you have to think about how the harris team thinks about a strategically in terms of convincing suburban women what a danger he would be if he returns to the presidency. but i just want to recommend to the
12:16 pm
trump strategists keep telling him to stay on message so that we can keep seeing this sort of imbecility from him trump's first campaign manager from 2016, corey lewandowsky returning to the campaign here, rejoining and what do you think of that? what do you think that means well, he knows the president well, and i and full disclosure. >> i'm a friend of kouri's. we've chosen to keep politics out of our friendship. i've always gotten on with him when he was in the campaign early on in 2016, i was with him and remember he wrote a book, let trump be trump. and so i think what's happening for the president right now, the polls got a little wobbly on him and they gained candidates. and so he's searching for a redirection in the campaign. and so i think he's going to corey for the let trump be trump sort of strategy as opposed also a more buttoned up, more disciplined trump will have to see if that works for them right now polls are super
12:17 pm
close. but i would point out to the harris team if they're this close and your on their team, i would be concerned because he has a tendency to underperform in these polls people don't like admitting that they're going to vote for him. >> so you gotta be plus three plus four. if you really want to have a comfortable lead over him all right. >> i recognize your pals as you say, it might be hard to kind of set that aside. as you assess sort of what maybe that means in some ways to anthony scaramucci. thank you so much, really appreciate it. >> would it be year ahead this hour on cnn news central, how u.s. >> intel help stop a quote, advanced terror plot to attack a taylor swift concert early here this month, plus russia launching a third massive attack against ukraine. as we learn, one of the country's top f 16 fighter pilots who spoke to us here on cnn is among those killed in this week, strikes. and we're waiting to see if a judge will move. bryan kohberger's long-awaited

12:23 pm
disrupt this plotted, plotted attack on a taylor swift concert in vienna earlier this month, we heard from deputy director david cohen speaking being at a conference in washington who said that the plot was quite mature and that it had threatened to kill potentially tens of thousands of people, including some americans. but to a certain degree, this was a little bit of a victory lap for this cia. you heard from cohen saying, and i'll i'll share directly what he said. i can tell you that within my agency and i'm sure and others there were people who thought that was a really good day for langley and not just for the swifties in my workforce. so we know obviously that the concert was canceled and that austria wound up detaining these three teenagers in connection with the plot who had allegedly sworn allegiance to i.s.i.s. but of course this is part of a bigger concern for us intelligence agencies who are really worried, not necessarily about i.s.i.s plotting fielding trained operatives, right? to carry out an attack, but they're worried about lone wolf attacks just like this. they're worried about online radicalization of
12:24 pm
young people who might be susceptible to this kind of propaganda so this is really a bigger issue for, for u.s. intel, rather than just bad blood in-between eisen, taylor swift, she got the song the song point in their battle when it comes to this specific plot though, you described it as as mature that the way that the cia describe it advanced was another way. what do we know about what they were actually plotting? >> there's still a lot of details about exactly what was supposed to happen here. here that we don't know. and certainly the deputy director did not share anything additional yesterday, nor did he give us any indication of how the cia learned about this plot. but what we you know, boris, is that this isn't the first time in recent months or even in the past year that the united states has warned other countries about potential i.s.i.s. attacks. they warned a russia in advance of an attack in march on a concert hall in moscow that ultimately killed 100 people. they also warned iran about an, a potential attack at an event in iran.

critical report is out about the fbi and how it handles child sex abuse cases an audit done by the justice department's inspector general states this despite reforms put in place after the botched investigation of disgraced usa gymnastics doctor larry nassar, the fbi is still mishandling allegations of child sexual abuse. >> we have cnn senior justice correspondent evan perez on this story. this is pretty stunning because they should have cleaned up their act after that giant giant failure what are the key failures mentioned in this audit? >> well, the inspector general for the justice department went back and looked at a subset of cases they looked at 327 cases and what they found was really concerning. they found that some of the same problems that happened in that they found after examining nassar case were happening again among the problems that they found, they found that the fbi agents were not reporting some cases of
12:34 pm
abuse to local authorities. they're supposed to do that within 24 hours. that was not happening. they found that in some cases, there was no indication or no record of investigative activity happening. again quickly. that is supposed to happen quickly and they found repeatedly that that didn't happen founded. in some cases, they have agents are juggling too many cases and ththat's one reason why it appears that the investigations were not being handled, that they proper manner. and so one of the things that you know, obviously that comes out of this is how do you respond? and after especially after you've found the same problems back in 2021, here's the fbi director back in 2021 after the nasser investigation responding to those victims in that case, listen i'm sorry for what you and your families have been through i'm sorry. that so
12:35 pm
many different people let you down over and over again. and i'm especially sorry that there were people at the fbi who had their own chance to stop this monster back in 2015 and failed. and that is inexcusable. it never should have happened. and we're doing everything in our power to make sure it never happens again what the fbi, what the fbi director, their promise was, this would never happen again, they paid 138 million to settle with those athletes from that were abused by larry nassar while the the fbi didn't really do much to investigate those. and so you mentioned that it was a delay in some of these cases of checking in on things. there was one case where the fbi didn't follow up on a tip for more than a year for more than a year. >> and again, this is what we asked this of the fbi officials. we had a call with the fbi officials who are responding to this and they said that these were anomalies.
12:36 pm
they said in the vast majority of these cases, they did do investigative work. there were some paperwork issues essentially which way they didn't document what they had done, but that's a problem because if you pass on a u.n. an investigation, for instance, to your local police, what they need to see is what the fbi did. and so that's a big, big part of this problem. they also say that they're going to do some more training. they're going to launch some new training for the fbi agents around the country to make sure that this problem is fixed. brianna, the issue is that they said this before. and so it appears they're going to make sure this time that agents are trained and that they are doing the right thing with these cases. these are obviously the most vulnerable people that the fbi has to deal with and protect and so they need to do better. >> yeah, it's heartbreaking, truly, evan, thank you. great reporting. we appreciate it. boris. >> now to some of the other headlines, we're watching this hour, a florida man is scheduled to be put to death tonight after the supreme court

12:43 pm
tonight, he travels to nearby wisconsin where he's hosting a town hall. and as we wait for trump to take the podium in michigan, the state's democratic governor, gretchen whitmer, is trying to cast the former president as a threat to the economy. listen michiganders already know what donald trump would do to our economy. and it's a no, thank you. from us. when i came into office, donald trump has shipped michigan jobs overseas, including thousands of auto jobs he tried to undermine our unions every way that he could that was during a call yesterday where whitmer also tried to link trump to project 2025, a proposal that democrats say is the conservative playbook for a second trump term. >> we should note publicly trump has disavowed project 2025, but that hasn't stopped democrats that's from keeping it in the spotlight like our next guest you might remember michigan state senator mallory mcmorrow from the democratic national convention when she held up at giant copy of
12:44 pm
project 2025, she joins us now live. mallory. thank you so much for being with us. i want to ask you about what governor whitmer said on that call, saying that michiganders want to say no, thank you to donald trump when it comes to the economy, because polls including a new one from quinnipiac, which was conducndud entirely after the dnc shows that the vice president lags behind trump on who voters trust to handle the economy. i'm wondering what you make of what the governor governor said versus what you're seeing in polling look, i think the governor's right, and what's important to point out is that since kamala harris became the nominee, the gap between the democratic candidate and trump has closed. >> so when we saw them, polling from president biden, we know there was a larger gap on the economy and the more that the vice president gets out there and talks about her message of affordable housing, new homebuyer credits, rent issues
12:45 pm
as well as really what project 2025 does, which for a middle-class family would result in a $3,900 tax crease annually. but if you're a multimillionaire, you could expect to see more than $300,000 in a tax cut. so there's more education to be done. a lot of people are optimistic about kamala harris but we know that trump is going to favor his millionaire and billionaire friends and it's going to hurt working class michiganders it stands out to me that you sort of delve into some policy there and yet some congressional democrats, including michigan congressman dan kildee have urged harris two sort of stay vague on policy to not get into the weeds but to make this election a referendum on character, i'm wondering what you think of that i think that it's a combination of both. >> you know, i'll be the first to say that in the 2020 primary, i wasn't elizabeth warren supporter. nobody had more plans then. elizabeth warren and we saw that that
12:46 pm
wasn't enough for a lot of voters. so what i'm telling voters is to pay attention to what each of the candidates focus on. vice president harris is talking about the things that matter, cost of living are fundamental rights, reproductive rights, lgbtq rights, water quality, climate change, the care economy, something that she is centering about childcare and families. and donald trump right now is all about grievance. he is still relitigating the 2020 election four years later. he is making this really a referendum on himself. he wants to get back into the white house to avoid jail time, to get out of lawsuits and two weaponize the government in a way that we would pay for. so you've got to strike the right balance. i do believe i agree with congressman kildee. this is about character and it's about the issues that we will focus on as they matter to michiganders and the american people are mallory, i want to ask you a quickly about rfk because he suspended his campaign last week, he endorsed
12:47 pm
donald trump, but we found out earlier that he's not going to be able to take himself off the ballot in michigan, how much support do you think he could pull from vice president harris i think he pulls more support from donald trump, and i took a lot of heat months ago. >> i was on a call that the dnc had put together when rfk announced his running mate and i said then that rfk jr. is just donald trump with the kennedy name slapped on him. people told me that i was crazy. i was out of my mind. and you look at where we are months later and he's falling in line. he's endorsed donald trump. he is promoting dangerous conspiracy theories. the more that we learn about him as it relates to dropping a dead bear off in central park or apparently you know, cutting a whale head off. it's just you talk about character. it's not quality character. and i think that we see who he is and i'm not worried about him pulling support from the vice president some bizarre anecdotes in his

following a hearing about moving the quadruple murder trial of bryan kohberger, the man accused of killing four university of idaho students from the town where it happened two years ago to the state capitol, a boise, some 300 miles away. kohberger's attorneys claim that he can't get a fair trial because the count one jury pool is biased. they say there is a mob mentality in the community and that a phone survey revealed residents are threatening to burn down the courthouse if kohberger is not convicted, cnn's jean casarez has been following the hearing for us. gina, what is the update here? >> well, the update is the hearing is continuing in the second witness just got off the stand. fascinating a professor that specializes in human bias. and what she said about people is that we form biases and we don't even know we do. and it's very hard to change them and they went she went to this case it's talking about that when bryan kohberger was
12:54 pm
arrested, the police chief of lay latah county, moscow said he was sure he has arrested the right person. and then the university president said, we've got the right man. and that was the beginning. getting of the formation of bias in that county. the witness said, and then once people attended the vigils for the victims, they have those emotions. they don't want to let their community down. and so then the defense said, so we've got a room of people here and potential jurors for jury selection in moscow. and all of a sudden, bryan kohberger enters the room. are people immediately going to have bias from this community? and she said, yes, they are. now here is what's interesting because the survey that defense expert did showed the following. what people are actually saying about bryan kohberger they said they'd burn the courthouse down. outrage would be a mild description and this is if he's not convicted, they would
12:55 pm
probably find and kill him there would likely be a riot and he wouldn't last long outside because someone would do the good ole boy, justice. so that's what this expert and bias is saying. but then on the other hand, the prosecution can cross-examine these witnesses and they pointed out that in boise, which is where the defense wants his trial, it's a state capital, largest city in the state that for the first six months on a particular chart by the defense expert, that more media coverage was actually in the boise area then moscow. and so it's going to be a very hard decision for the judge because of fair and impartial trial, especially this death penalty trial, is critical, especially for appellate reasons. >> all right. jean casarez watching this case carefully all long. thank you for the update. and we'll be right back
