6:00 am
alone but the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu saying this was an act of terrorism, a despicable terrorist is what he called this truck driver from jordan, jordanians condemning it as well, but saying that the root causes for that violence in their words, have to be addressed and they're talking about the war in gaza and israeli action in the west bank where it's been embarked in military operations, particularly over the course of the past several weeks so again, it all adds to that sense of tension and violence, which from day-to-day it's, your ratcheting up here in this region, john right. >> matthew chance for us live in tel aviv this morning, matthew, thank you very much. stay safe. a brand new hour of cnn new central starts right now it's about to go down, perhaps the most consequential moment so far in the 2024 election cycle, the debate between vice president kamala harris and former president
6:01 am
donald trump is tomorrow, where here to make the stakes even higher. >> the latest polling indicates they are tied. the public being war now, as an intense manhunt is underway for shooter are taking shots at people as they drive down a busy interstate in kentucky, five people have been wounded. what police are saying now about the suspects potential whereabouts putin change for women and breast health. what doctors say you need to look out for? i'm sara sidner with kate bolduan and john berman. this is cnn new central it is good morning of debate. >> day eve, happy holidays to those who celebrate all eyes on philadelphia for a moment that could change everything. or at a minimum take things loose because as harry enten is noted, this is the closest election season. we have ever
6:02 am
seen new polling from the new york times and siena college reflects that also 28% of likely voters say that they feel they need to learn more about vice president harris. >> 9% say that about donald trump let's get right to cnn's eva mckend, who is in pittsburgh this morning, which is where vice president harris has been preparing for the debate, preparing how and for what eva john, we've just one day from what could be the most consequential moment of the campaign. we don't know the vice president has been closely monitoring this six pass debate performances of the former president combing over briefing books with his past comments at combing over what he has said about her, how he has insulted her. she's also been in close conversation with hillary clinton and president biden, who both of course, have extensive experience debating the former i'm president additionally, she has been in these intense mock debate prep sessions with someone standing in for the former president.
6:03 am
ultimately, her goal here is not only to make forceful case against the former president, but also really make the argument that it is time to move on from this trump era style of politics. john it even i do understand that they already have a rollout plan for after the debate that's right there already building out the week here and their branding it as a new way forward. >> he has debate stops. i'm sorry. event stops this week, both here in pennsylvania, as well as in north carolina. governor walz though will campaign in the midwest and their respective spouses we'll be out on the circuit as well. essentially, the campaign will have a footprint in every battleground state. you know, this idea of a new way forward. republicans have sort of poked holes at that, arguing that the vice president can't credibly make that argument given that she's currently in they administration still there very
6:04 am
much trying to maintain this argument and they're really focused on making the case to voters, the voters in these battleground states, john, that they say will ultimately decide this election both want to be the candidate of change here, even mckend. >> thank you so much from pittsburgh. we appreciate it. sara. >> this morning, new threats from donald trump are alarming election officials. he, if he wins in november, the former president went on twitter and said, he's promising to throw those workers in jail if he thinks they cheated. he is also calling on the fbi to investigate mail-in ballots and pennsylvania without giving any evidence that there is maize major fraud there. cnn's steve contorno joining us now with more on this what's he saying? >> sara over the weekend, donald trump, who has spent the last four years attacking the 2020 election, is already setting his sights on undermining the 2024 election before any ballots have been cast, take a look at this post on truth social that he put up
6:05 am
over the weekend where he said, quote those biles and unscrupulous behavior will be sought out, caught, and prosecuted at levels. unfortunately, never seen before in our country, he went on to say that those that he believes cheated in the election will have lengthy prison sentences and just in case you're thinking that he's only talking about the small minority of people in this country that file legal ballots. a very miniscule population every election he actually specify that he's talking about lawyers, political operatives, donors, and even election officials. as you said, he also attacked mail-in voting in pennsylvania with more fraud or unsubstantiated claims about fraud. it's interesting, he's doing that because right now his campaign is trying aggressively to encourage his supporters to vote by mail, vote early vote absentee, even as he is seeking to undermine it. he is also talking about this upcoming debate. he has
6:06 am
with vice president harris. he has someone who has debated more than anyone in presidential history, at least in modern times. and he talked a lot about what he expects this weekend. listen to what he said we're run by stupid people, stupid, stupid people and we found that out at the debate with joe. how did that work out? and we're going to find it out again on tuesday night. is anybody going to be watching? she's a defender of police, you know, when somebody on the far-left is in charge of defund the police for 12 years and then they switched three weeks ago or something? >> just a preview of what you can expect tomorrow. sara. >> all right. steve contorno. thank you so much. appreciate it. kate, joining us right now to talk about this is congresswoman katherine clark of massachusetts, democratic whip in the house. >> carson. thank you for coming in. let's talk about the debate in just one second. but the new york times poll that
6:07 am
has come out showing that there's no clear leader has jason miller of donald trump's campaign declaring that the honeymoon is officially over is how he put it for harris is that it jake? >> thank you for having me on and let me tell you the poll that matters is what happens on election day but just coming off of being in five different congressional districts. >> and michigan in ohio i can tell you that kamala harris message is resonating because she's focused on lowering costs, expanding ability to get into housing, growing the middle class, and protecting our fundamental freedom. and what i heard from voters, in purple, red, and blue districts over the last that's few days. is that that matters to them. they don't trust j.d. vance to order donuts. they certainly don't trust him to order american families on if, when,
6:08 am
and how they can have children so we're seeing a surge of volunteers, a surge of first-time donors and we know that kamala harris is the underdog going into this. but momentum remains on her side. >> one thing we're also hearing from voters through this polling once again, is there is a sizable share of voters that say they still need more information from her to form an opinion, 28% of likely voters said that they feel that they feel like they need to learn more about kamala harris, just 9% say that about donald trump. does that concern you you know, again, we know that she has only been the presidential candidate for weeks and not years. >> people do know donald trump and they are alarmed at donald trump. they are alarmed at the policies that are rigged against the middle-class that are just about tax policy that only rewards the extremely wealthy. in this country. i met
6:09 am
with small business owners and michigan and they are so excited. the kamala harris has proposed tax policy that is focused around them because they know. and see in her policies that she understands that our economy is built on our main streets, not a wall street. and this is the type of policy that is resonating. i went into union halls and heard from them that not only are they so grateful for the infrastructure bill and the work building good paying jobs that the biden/harris administration did but her continued focus on making housing available and affordable for families. this is a concern of working families across this country. this is the moment and what kamala harris is meeting when she talks about an economy that doesn't just let people get by, but get ahead. that's an
6:10 am
opportunity economy that's what people are seeing in her campaign. >> but there is an affordability crisis that is still setting in, in this, in this country and on the economy from poll after poll, we've got the new national poll from new york times that has trump holding a 13 point advantage on the economy in the cnn poll of the battlegrounds, trump is more trusted than harris on the economy anna me by eight points on average if what you say is true, why is he leading you know, again, we are at the very start in some ways and also in the middle and the end of her campaign but let's take one of those affordability issues. >> let's take child care, which is an issue i hear everywhere i go as an extreme cost for families that prevents them from being able to get by and kamala harris has put forward a plan around childcare she has worked her career to
6:11 am
try and get universal pre-k to help parents. and employers meet the needs of their children while being able to go to work and know that they have found quality the affordable, accessible childcare. what have we heard from j.d. vance and donald trump? from donald trump, i'll complete word salad. he doesn't understand the needs of working families. and from j.d. vance at the same time, house republicans in the budget, they're going to put forward this week are cutting social security administration he's saying that grandparents should just do more to help their children you really cannot even make up how out of touch to donald trump and j.d. vance are and as we go back to washington this week and look at the budget ahead of us, who do they harm in this budget seniors our veterans, those communities that are facing
6:12 am
natural disasters gop, that is out of touch. >> the way that j.d. vance and trump's way they talk about childcare over the weekend has been described as struggling to answer questions on it and incoherent has also been one way. it has been described no question. but when it comes, this gets back to my economy question i keep hearing. you said that this is the beginning or middle of the campaign. i keep hearing that from democrats that he's leading only because voters haven't turned their attention fully be the election they haven't really grasp yet what kamala harris is going to do for them when it comes to the economy, when is the expiration date on that? because early voting is about to start in places like pennsylvania well, i'm gonna push back on that, kate because i've just been in swing states and what i'm hearing from voters and seeing is an understanding that we have
6:13 am
donald trump over here proposing a national sales tax that would just completely hurt american families who are trying to make their budgets balance and on the other hand, they're seeing kamala harris addressing what they need to address. >> how are we going to bring down the price of groceries? how are we going to make housing and childcare more affordable? how are we going to protect our fundamental freedoms like if, when, and how we have children in this country so we can look at polls, but what matters is what's happening with voters. what matters is in every single campaign comes down to this. do you see my family? and are you going to fight for me the answer with voters in these critical states is kamala harris does, and donald trump does not so we'll see different polls. we've seen polls where she's leading. we're seeing
6:14 am
polls where she is gaining on the economy and what matters is the turnout and turning that momentum into action. that's what i'm seeing around this country. that's why i am very optimistic going into this fall and you've definitely been out there campaigning with kamala harris to send that message a key opportunity for her to spread that message again tomorrow on that debate stage, congresswoman katherine clark, thank you for your time. >> john. >> right this morning, an urgent manhunt, police racing to find the suspect and opened fire on a busy interstate shooting, five people we've got new details on a call from the apalachee school shooter's mother, warning of a quote, extreme emergency just minutes before the attack. and one of the biggest stars in the nfl detained just hours for kickoff, at least one police officer now put on administrative leave kamala harris, donald trump, the debate. >> everyone's been waiting for

6:19 am
it's been a week so many ways to save life, ready, wallet, happy. >> that's 365 by whole foods market, mlb, tv is gearing up for the postseason another anything like this tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. on tbs and max and live on tv, follow him grayson this morning, classes are canceled and parts of kentucky is police are urgently searching for a man considered to be armed and dangerous. police say joseph couch opened fire on 12 cars on a busy highway seriously injuring five people what bring in cnn, senior national security analyst, juliette kayyem with us now, they've resumed the manhunt this morning what are the challenges facing law enforcement this morning? >> well well, the challenge has always been the darkness. i mean, in other words, it's just hard to do this kind of search in a forested and sort of dense
6:20 am
densely forested area as compared to say a urban area, even as suburban areas. so that's always been the challenge in the morning brings new light and new opportunity to find him. so that's the first challenge. the second is they have no idea how much he prepared for his exit or his ability to go dark i mean, did he was he preparing food and water and other things that would have made it him able to stay put for some period of time because in a lot of these instances, someone needs gas, they need to use her credit card, they get on their cell phone. what he may have prepared to hide i think the third thing, john, we we've done this enough in terms of maine and the main active shooter in here and in boston where i live with the boss it's a marathon bombers is how long do you shut down society based on these threats? so we know some of the schools are closed. we know the highways
6:21 am
were closed that's going to get into day four or five. you've got to get kids back into school. you got to get people back on the street and i think that's going to be a challenge. there. >> if they don't catch him. >> you talk about the unknown, which is how much he prepared for this. there was a weapon found is an open question. does he have more weapons? did he prepare and hide away some weapons? just in case what what is history tell us about how much of a threat to others, people on the run like this are yeah. so this is, this is an interesting one in a sort of bad way in the sense that there's no it's not sort of like an active shooter situation that we saw in maine in which i don't want to say there was a reason for it, but there was some sort of hint of what was to come or you have a terrorism incident as we've seen in european cities and in boston and elsewhere where there's an incident and it's quite planned and targeted here
6:22 am
you have a truce sniper. we haven't seen this in a long while and we saw it in dc more than close to two decades ago we don't know what the motive is. the targets are completely random and what you have is a highway sniper, which is not only scary in terms of the bullets, but also scary in terms of what the response is going to be on the highway. that is why they closed both sides of the highway. no one got killed yet. but you could get killed in an automobile accident and then trying to avoid a sniper and that's that's the challenge right now. is there's no there's seems to be no plan to buy him about why he chose that highway. and therefore, he could go to another highway in another state even yeah, the randomness poses its own type in this case, juliette kayyem, great to see you. hopefully this result safely in the next few hours. thank you. >> yes, sir.
6:23 am
>> all right. this morning, students at apalachee high school gathered with staff and relatives of the victims at a makeshift memorial at the school today. they will be allowed to recover their belongings left inside after last week's school shooting there too soon students and two teachers were suspected teenage gunman opened fire in school we are also learning new details this morning about how the suspect's mother tried to warn the school of what she called a quote extreme emergency just before the attack unfolded, cnn's rafael romo is in winder, georgia for us. tell us about how his mom figured out what was he's going on and then tried to get in touch with the school yes. >> sara, good morning. the family of the 14-year-old suspect has confirmed to cnn the boys mother called to warn a school counselor, just be for her son allegedly went on a
6:24 am
shooting rampage that killed two of his classmates and two teachers. this is according to annie brown, she's the suspect's aunt and marcee gray broke her silence over the weekend when she told the washington post she is so sorry for what she calls the absolutely horrific shooting. >> this is what we know that teams the team suspect's grandfather charles boheme, has confirmed to cnn that colt gray sent his mother and alarming text message the morning of the shooting. >> the text simply said, i'm sorry, mom. that's when marci gray, the suspect's mother, decided to make a call to the school. that lasted ten minutes after the call. she plays to add 950 in the morning. she decided to drive to hundred miles from fitzgerald, georgia to hear in winder. but by the time she arrived, the tragic shooting had already happened in other words, sara, we're talking about a span of roughly 30 minutes from the moment the
6:25 am

6:26 am
the mother shows that he knows right from wrong. i'm sure we will we'll see some of these text messages again, potentially in court. again, we're looking at the pictures of the memorial as people were praying and remembering the four victims of this case. thank you so much for your great reporting throughout this this tragic incident. rafael romo, there and georgia pressed kate? >> the presidential candidates are about to face off and face each other for the first time on the debate stage meeting in battleground, pennsylvania, and meeting in just as new polling highlights, how important that the page good be will be for both campaigns. >> and it has been a rough year for boeing, but some good news for the company as the aviation giant reaches a deal to avoid a massive labor strike saturday syscall, cnn is taking a break from breaking news to air. >> have i got news for you? >> breaking news. i'm getting a sandwich. >> we need to talk about what

plus ask how to get up to a $500 prepaid card. call today! dirty clubs goodbye and litter box. >> kilo letter robot saturday and meet on tnt all right. new for you this morning, new polling shows the race for the white house as tight as it can get, making the debate. that is, one sleep away even more consequential, a new york times sienna college poll showing there is no clear leader among likely voters between vice president kamala harris harris and former president donald trump. joining me now to discuss is democratic strategist doug for now, and republican strategist neil chatter. thank you both for coming on as you saw, there were 35 hours. again, i think one sleep is a better way to say it, but that's just me mr. saturday, i am going to start with you. are you surprised that this is in a dead heat now
6:32 am
no, i'm not. >> i mean, i think this was pretty predictable. i think coming off the assassination attempt and the republican convention, there had been a lot of momentum for former president trump. that was obviously flip when vice president harris was swapped in for president biden as the nominee and there was a lot of initially and excitement and enthusiasm and momentum in her direction. everyone predicted at that time that as we would get into the fall, as we would get past labor day, the race would settle and it's basically where it was before the first debate between former president trump and president biden that led to president biden dropping out. it's been a stable race for a while. so this doesn't really surprise me mr. thrown out. what does i said, mr. tatters you. so i have to use last names justices us to start to be fair what does kamala harris to do in this debate remembering that this is she
6:33 am
has not debated as much as donald trump has debated. he has debated and debated and debated over the years what does she need to do that's right. >> this will be donald trump's seventh presidential debate and the vice president's first. >> i think she really just needs to focus squarely on the issues that middle-class families are concerned about. >> she's got a strong vision for the country where she wants to take the country making sure that everyone has a chance at opportunity. i think you contrast that with the with president trump and his agenda, which is essentially looking out for himself and billionaires. and i think that's really going to be an important point for her to make stay on the offense don't follow the shiny objects that donald trump is going to try to throw out there and talk about the issues that matter and go on offense and i think she's going to be fine. i think look, he's a very unpredictable debater. it's very hard to prepare for someone like that. he's done this six times before. so he's he's obviously not going to be
6:34 am
afraid of what about the lights, but she's got a real opportunity here i do want to ask you about something. >> i don't know if i would call it shiny, but something that's been thrown out there by donald trump. let's pull up what he tweeted out and in it he goes after what he calls anybody who he thinks is going to basically defraud the election who cheated as he put it, and he talks about putting people in jail including those members of the department of justice is this something that she needs to and this is first to you, doug is this something that you think she needs to address this idea that 2020 was stolen, that donald trump keeps pushing that and now he's threatening people who are official pollsters and official folks that are going to be going through with this election is, this something that she needs to address or should you just stick to what her policies are well, we're dealing with someone who is
6:35 am
running a campaign on revenge and retribution. >> and donald trump, he embrace the tenants of the project, project 2025 plan, which will give him unchecked and unprecedented power. and it scared a lot of people. i think that's why you saw lynn cheney, you saw dick cheney. you've seen republicans who played senior level roles in the trump administration like mark milley, mark esper john bolton, even former vice president mike pence, have raised real concerns about donald trump's fitness for office and what he would do for our democracy. so i think those are all issues she'll probably touch on look, there's a reason why i think the issue in the theme of freedom is so central to the vice president's campaign. and that's really on the ballot here. and i think it's something that she's got she's got to talk about neil, aren't people are tired of the relitigation of 2020. it was a free and fair election is this something that is going to hurt
6:36 am
donald trump? you think if he starts doing this on the debate stage? >> i mean, i think it's pretty well baked in at this point, we've been hearing him air these grievances for the past couple of years now, i think this is the former president trying to work the refs, if you will to try and set the stage in the event that should he lose he'll he'll once again say that it wasn't a legitimate election i don't think he should focus on this in any way on the debate stage, he needs to make this about vice president harris trying to find her, pin her down on the economy, on the border on crime, on her flip-flopping on various positions. i think any breaths he takes re-litigating 2020 will be a mistake. he's got to make this about defining the vice president and the future. >> doug, i want either one more thing in the poll that really stood out. it was interesting that 28% of voters said, when asked whether they still need to learn more about the candidate, 28% said they did
6:37 am
need to learn more about kamala harris and where she stands. only 9% said so for donald trump, what does she need to do? here? that is a huge difference and they want to know more about where she stands and also potentially who she is i think this is a real opportunity for the vice president for her to lay out. >> again, her vision for the middle-class. what she's gonna do to strengthen and protect social security and medicare, what she's gonna do to protect reproductive freedoms so i would actually, if it was the other way around, i think it's more concerning. trump really has little room to grow here. he's largely pretty much defined. and a lot of the issues about him or baked and she has a real opportunity with this debate. there's going to be tens of millions of people watching to lay out a very clear vision for the future on the middleclass, what she's going to do for the middle-class, what she's gonna do to protect our national security, what she's going to do to keep our community safe. so this i see that as a positive sign. she's been in
6:38 am

moisture, eliminating musty odor news with abby phillip tonight at ten eastern on cnn an important change for women and families just announced that starting tomorrow the fda is requiring that all patients who get mammograms to be notified of their breast density. a key risk factor in detecting breast cancer seen as jacqueline howard has much more on this for us, she's joining us right now. jacqueline talk about the importance of this change and what it means yeah, kate will know in your breast density is so important for two reasons. one, we know that having dense breast is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. but number two, having dense breasts can also make it more difficult to read a mammogram itself, the reason why breast density as a measurement of how much much fibroglandular tissue you have in your breast compared with fatty tissue. and the more fibroglandular tissue
6:44 am
that denser the breasts. but that fibroglandular tissue can appear white on a mammogram in the same way, a tumor or a lump may appear. so in some cases, it can mask or hide signs of cancer. so that's why knowing your breasts city is so important with this new rule that goes into effect tomorrow, kate, it will make it a national uniform standard for all patients to have their breast density information on their mammogram result letter. in some states, 39 states and washington, dc, they already have this requirement at the local level but what changes here kate is now this will be a national requirement for all patients. that's the takeaway. >> yeah. how many women are impacted? how many women have dense breasts? because the key here and you're getting at this is the accuracy of mammograms can drop pretty dramatically when you're talking about, when you're when the mammogram has to do with dense breasts and also the recommendation for women who
6:45 am
are looking at this absolutely. >> and we know about half of women ages 40 or older have dense breast. so that's how many people will be impacted by this new fda rule. and the reason why this is like you said, kate, if you have dense breasts in your mammogram result letter that notifies you of your breast density. you'll be recommended to talk to your doctor about what your breast density means for you and your risk, but also your doctor will likely recommend for you to do some additional screening. probably with an ultrasound, probably have an mri of the brain has to because we know of how breast density can impact your mammogram results specifically absolutely, this is an important, important change from the fda, jacqueline, thank you very much, sir. i'm going to start revising what i say. get your mammogram and your ultra a sound when you go, that's exactly right. >> i mean, because you half of all women have dense breasts basically, this is what's needed. >> it's key. alright, thank you very much. that was really good information. all right.
