news central starts right now it is on full just hours to go until the crucial debate between kamala harris and donald trump, we have new reporting on their secret game plan explosion in moscow overnight, hunter herds and drone swarming moscow and other russian cities and ukraine's largest drone attack, yet nine regions targeted this morning, assessing the impact and we have a lift off after weeks of delays, spacex falcon nine, rocket ship. >> now sorting through space how the polaris dawn crew hopes to make history i'm sara sider with kate bolduan and john berman. >> this is cnn new central this
4:02 am
morning in the immortal words of kate baldwin, it's debate day in america, friends the first debate between vice president harris and former president trump, the first time as far as we know that they will ever meet at all. >> maybe the last the event of the national constitution center in philadelphia comes in an absolutely pivotal moment. the closest campaign we have ever seen this morning, axios calls it a high risk, high reward opportunity for harris and politico, a person close to donald trump says, quote, harris is going to try to bait him question is, does he take it or not? let's get right to philadelphia. cnn's eva mckend is at the debate site. you've been following the harris campaign. what are they thinking heading into the big night? >> well, john, part of the strategy is to get under his skin, lean into his insecurities and their up with a new ad this morning that aims to do just that oh, go, after
4:03 am
his obsession with crowd sizes and they're using a familiar messenger to make this argument form. former president barack obama. this is part of a larger argument that the campaign is making, that the former president is principally concerned about his own grievances, his own own problems, while the vice president is concerned about the issues impacting everyday americans, take a listen to how this looks on here there's a 78-year-old billionaire who has not stopped whining about his problems she had a big crowd audit crowd this weird obsession with crowd sizes and they want to make sure that the former president sees this ad that's why it's going to be airing right here in philadelphia as well as in west
4:04 am
palm beach and on fox news. >> but other than this, the vice president is also expected to outline her policy vision for america and introduce herself to much of the country, you know, john so many americans still getting to know her absolutely. >> eva mckend for us in philadelphia. eva, thank you very much. kate. >> and this morning, a little window into donald trump's strategy going into tonight's debate coming from some of trump's advisers for the former president's strategy will include focusing on, of course, vice president kamala harris as her role as vice president, trying to tie her to being maybe even solely responsible. their argument for the major decisions over the past three plus years in the biden administration, the trump campaign also saying on a call with reporters that quote, president trump is going to be himself. cnn's alayna treene is in philadelphia where there is a lot that is uncertain. donald
4:05 am
trump being donald trump is the one certainty in all of this. what else do you hearing? >> no that's exactly right. kate. and interesting enough to point to talk to your point there. donald trump is going to be donald trump tonight. his campaign advisors had been telling me for days now that he hasn't been really changing his level of preparation. of course, they don't like the word preparation donald trump has an aversion to that formal prep. instead, they're calling these policy sessions with outsidcy sessions with outside advisers senior advisors, allies, et cetera. we heard jason miller as well as some other campaign allies, including tulsi gabbard, who we have reported is helping donald trump with a campaign prep as well as matt gaetz. they were on this call yesterday. i want you to take a listen to what diller told reporters she owns every failure of the harris-biden administration. >> you can't talk about turning the page when you're the one who created our current nightmare, you just can't you
4:06 am
can't prepare for president trump there's just no way to do it. it's imagined like a boxer trying to prepare for floyd mayweather muhammad ali. you just, you don't know what angled are going to come at you with. you don't know what style of contrast that they're going to deliver. >> now kate there's a few key things i really want to point out here and speaking to what jason miller said, one is that they are trying very hard to tie kamala harris, as you mentioned, to the biden administration's policies and almost argue that she is somewhat of a mastermind behind that. of course, she was the vice president, i think so. hear her trying to distinguish herself on stage tonight, but that is a key goal, particularly on some attacks with the withdrawal of troops from afghanistan. her voting record, her record on the handling of the u.s.-mexico border. those were all things they laid out on this call and i want to tell you what i'm hearing that they didn't talk about on that call and that is what i think a lot of allies are telling me they are the
4:07 am
most concerned about with donald trump. it's not necessarily how he handles the policy questions too, although of course, that is a big concern, but more so they are worried about his tone and temperament and that is something they have been working with him on behind the scenes in these different meetings. in particularly because look, that was a big concern them in the lead up to the debate in june with joe biden, they argue it's even more important now given that harris isn't an entirely different opponent, one, she's far more popular now than joe biden was at the time, but they also say the fact that she is a woman is something that the optics of that could be really different for donald trump, particularly we know he's aggressive when he goes on stage. they've been arguing for him to be more restrained. and so that is something i'm also told that tulsi gabbard, who had been on the debate stage with kamala harris in the past and the 2020 democratic primary. that is something she specifically has been working with donald trump on. and so i think you're going to see how that all plays out tonight. if donald trump can really restrain himself from making some of those personal attacks
4:08 am
and really keep trying to steer the conversation back to the policy areas. we know his team wants him to focus on. of course, as we've talked about, immigration, crime, and the economy real quick, j.d. vance was pressed yesterday about certifying the 2020 election what's what's going on there yeah, it was an interesting response. >> i'd argue from j.d. vance luck, this is actually something i'm also told has come up in some of these debate conversations with donald trump, how he would respond to his handling of the january 6 attack on the capitol and j.d vance really he's he kind of gave it my opinion, a jumbled answer there. he said, look, you know, mike pence you know, maybe i want to put the pressure on mike pence, but we would have had a different set of electors. it wasn't really clear what he was saying, but i think this what has been clear is that this is a very tough issue for the trump campaign overall, when they try to talk about this and what happened and the clear thing i hear consistently, not only from his
4:09 am
campaign, but also from the allies that want him to win this fall is that they don't want to be talking about january 6. they don't want to be talking about how he handled that. and so that's why you've seen or at least i've heard in my conversations with trump's advisers that this has been coming up in in case he gets let's ask that question himself tonight plan and train in philadelphia for us. >> good to see sir all right. >> ahead. breaking overnight a deadly drone attack inside russia, more than 140 ukrainian drones attacking nine regions including the capital city moscow, plus new body camera footage showing the moments leading up to nfl star tyreek hill being handcuffed and put face down on the ground just minutes from the dolphin stadium where he was about to play. and the mother of the suspected georgia school shooter are speaking out this morning. what she says she did good on the morning that her son is accused of attacking and killing four people. >> that's ahead kamala harris?

4:15 am
international correspondent fred pleitgen in kyiv, with more for us, fred, what are you learning about this attack? >> hi there, sara, we'll really seems as though the ukrainians have up their long range drone capabilities. this is already the second very large scale drone attack the russian say that they've suffered from the ukrainians in a little over a week. and this time, as you mentioned, more than 140 drones, the russians say that they've taken down. it was quite interesting to sort of see the flight pattern that seems to be emerging of these drones. the russians are saying that they shot some of those drones down in the border regions with ukraine. but then obviously, as we've just noted, some of them made it to the moscow region. and what we're sort of seeming to see here is that appears to have been at least in some places and attack on moscow's airports. the one person who was killed, a woman
4:16 am
who was killed was 46-years-old, was killed in the commons quiz suburb of moscow that south east of the russian capital. but that's also the place where there's, you cough ski airport is low okay. did which is a civilian airport, but one that also is known to the locals as the romans coy airport. also we do know that at other moscow airports flight operations were shut down for several hours and there's long lines that are forming their, the russians have said that they fended off those drones nevertheless, it does appear clear that the ukrainians are able to mount large scale drone attacks while at the same time, of course, over the past couple of weeks, we've also seen the russians drastically increased their own air campaign against ukrainian cities and the ukrainian critical infrastructure as well. all this sara, as the situation in the battlefield really is heating up. in fact, we just returned from the nice of the country, the area around pokrovsk, the eastern front, were right now that's city is getting shelled on a near constant basis. we were on the ground for several hours and we really didn't hear that telling stop, but i was able to speak to some medics who right

8:00 on tnt and lift off of the polaris dawn mission on the falcon nine rocket, the falcon nine has cleared the tower spacex's polaris dawn mission lifted off early this morning, likely while you were still sleeping, the five-day expedition is set to make history the farthest and journey from earth by anyone since nasa moon landings within 50 years ago. and the crew is made up of four people, all civilians fans who will be attempting the first spacewalk ever conducted by people who are not professional astronauts. cnn's kristin fisher has much more on all of this tracking it all. there's a lot of firsts with this mission, kristen so many firsts, kate, i mean, the biggest one is the one that you just mentioned. the world's first commercial spacewalk. but this is also going to be the first time that spacex is brand new spacesuit has ever been
4:24 am
tested and warn in the vacuum of space. remember this is something that nasa has been trying to develop a new spacesuit for over two decades. spacex was able to do it in about 2.5 years. now, it is finally about to be put to the test and then one more first, kate, this is the first time since the apollo program that any people are going to be traveling through the radiation belt that period piece of space where it's really just a concentration of hi, highly charged particles and radiation, a place that you need to go in order to, you have to go through it in order to get to tomorrow. so that's why it's so important, kate and as for what they're doing right now, well, they just launched their in space, but already they are beginning their preparations for that spacewalk. they have to do a 45 hour long pre-breathe. think of it as what scuba divers do to prevent from getting the bends. they decompression sickness. so
4:25 am
they've got to do the pre-breathe purge nitrogen from their bloodstream before they go out into the vacuum of space, kate what more can you tell us about the crew so it's a four-person crew, only two of them though, are actually going to be going out into space. the commander, jared isaac men and one of the mission specialists, sarah gillis and sara, it actually the lead astronaut trainer for spacex and so the reason that jared, the commander sherine, other people at spacex wanted her to be a part of this team and anna men into one of the other mission specialists was because their spacex employees and they are the ones that are responsible for training. other nasa astronauts or nasa astronauts, and other private astronauts to fly in space. and so jared and spacex look if this is the person that's responsible for training astronauts she should have that experience firsthand so she's going to get it. and so as jared right there, this is his second spaceflight. you
4:26 am
may remember him. he flew in space for the first time, three years ago on inspiration for, but he came back to spacex and said, i want to do a test and development program, not just one mission. so this is the first of three missions that jared is going to be doing kate to really help spacex achieve its ultimate goal of colonizing mars someday, the spacesuits used in this spacewalk, a future generation of it will likely be used on mars. kate a lot to come just with this mission and clearly beyond kristin fisher. thank you so much, john. >> all right. it is as k likes to say, debate day in america, we've got new details on how the candidates are gearing up for the most important 90 minutes of the campaign hey and this morning we have new bodycam video showing the moment that nfl star tyreek hill was handcuffed by police during a traffic stop one, second. it's a pipe dream and

4:32 am
start with former president trump. his agenda includes energy dominance. he wants to drill for a lot more oil. now, obviously that's the exact opposite of what climate scientists say we need. and there's some debate over how much more oil we could be drilling, but directionally still, all else equal, more supply would of course help with prices. we've talked a lot, john you and i about tariffs. trump is calling for massive terrorist that is really alarming economists because it could actually raise prices on all of us consumers. what hasn't gotten enough attention though, is the impact of his immigration crackdown. he wants to deport ten to 15, actually, perhaps up to 20 million immigrants. there's a lot of debate over how many documented people there are here and how any of this would withstand legal challenges, but still there is some research that warns if he's able to do mass deportations, it would make inflation go up, and it would cause gdp to go down. that is all very concerning here because obviously businesses, they need more workers, not fewer let's take a
4:33 am
look at the harris agenda, vice president harris has tried to show that she is very concerned about the affordability crisis. she's called for investing in affordable childcare. she also wants a $6,000 tax credit for newborns. so that's something that would be politically popular, although you've got to remember that would actually stimulate demand. so that's something that could actually be infinite please. scenario on the supply side of things, harris has called for three million new housing units that will be designed to address this massive housing shortage. >> but harris is also calling for $25,000 down payment assistance. >> that is something that has concerned some of the economists that i've talked to justin wolfers told me that problem right now is to many people chasing too few houses. the solution is not to give people more money to buy houses. so the key here would be, of course john, that the supply of houses comes before the demands. the newest that is a really good explanation of the differences. here, you will hear about both these plans. i
4:34 am
imagine in some way tonight. >> well, thank you, john and sara. all right. joining us now to continue the discussion, democratic strategists julie roginsky and bryan lanza, the former deputy communications director for the trump pence campaign. thank you. both for being here. first, just to both of you and i'll start with you, julie, because you're here next to me. is this a make or break moment for these candidates or is one far more vulnerable than the other? >> well, i think it's more important for harris and that is for trump because trump is already established in people's minds. either love trump or hate trump. there's nothing trump's going to say that's going to suddenly make you say, oh my god, i now believe in donald trump or now, hey, donald trump for harris, she is not as well-known and actually i was speaking to my mother the other day and she said, i don't know much about kamala harris but i'm going to vote for her just because i don't like donald trump, right so that's the kind of voter that harris needs to appeal to in the sense that people don't know much about her despite the fact that she has been an elected official for many years. so for her, this is an introduction to america in a way that it's not pro-trump
4:35 am
stakes are a little higher for her. >> brian, your thoughts on whether or not this is a make-or-break moment. and as julie points out in polling, most people do know donald trump no more about donald trump, certainly than they do. kamala harris i would agree with juliette's oh, 100% inflection point for the harris campaign. you know, president trump is largely defined. nobody's either shocked or disappointed, are you anything with what he says? so it doesn't move the needle anymore? but with harris, she's still trying to define herself. you see recent polling that's comes out that says she's now in a category of extreme liberal. she needs to sort of fight that image. but if it's cemented that image, there is very little that can be done between now and into the campaign because it's the last opportunity that she's going to have to sort of talk to the type of audience. and if if president trump is successful at reinforcing her san francisco liberal image, she's going to a very tough battle. >> this perhaps will be the largest audience to see these candidates ever you can go out on the stump, but this is, this
4:36 am
is where a lot of people will get to know or get to know them again let me let you listen to a couple of things. one, jason miller talking about out kamala harris and how it looks like they're going to try to frame her and kamala harris on the tavis smiley show talking about what she expects from donald trump very clear that kamala harris is the one who's been running the country the entire time really old and tired playbook, right? >> where he, there's no floor for him in terms of how long he will go and we should be prepared for that. we should be prepared for the fact that he has not burdened by telling the truth julie, when you hear those two things, do you think that they're both spot on and it kind of tells you what they are expecting and how they're expecting this debate to go down. well, first of all, i don't think she's been running the country the entire time. joe biden's been running
4:37 am
entering the entire time, although she's been a partner with him and by the way, she should own that. look, strongest economy, strongest job creation strong stock market on the economy alone. she's got a good story to tell. she can talk about how she can improve it more. but the reality is, if that's the way jason miller wants to portray her, she should own that and lean into it in terms of the way she has been portraying trump. look, they're taking a different tact. they're not saying that he's a threat. he's he's the anti-christ. what they're basically saying he's old, he's tired, he's old news. same old, same old. let's move on from him because we know donald trump and we're kind of tired of donald trump. it's an interesting tactic and i think it's one that's designed to annoy him because of course, all donald trump wants to be is the center of attention. and if you're relegating him to the dustbin of history nothing tries and more crazy. i mean, he had a press conference where he talked about when celebrity he is and has been for so many years. that's what's important to him there trying to get to him by using this old tired playbook with him to make him seem not as viable, not as important as he wants to be. >> bryan, do you think that that tact is going to draw out
4:38 am
some of the worst sides of donald trump if if she goes down that road no look i said you know, people have already passed judgment on president trump's. so no matter what the theatrical going to take place at the debate, it's not going to shock anybody, but i do think it probably be a wasted opportunity for kamala harris to sort of try to bait president trump, but she still has to fill in her record the eyes of the voters. she was the copilot to this inflation expressed that the, that the american people have felt she has to address that and she doesn't have a good answer we're only answers. let's give people more money. let's give them, let's cancel student that. let's give them more. these tax credits and let's add more inflationary things to the, to the pot and i think that's going to be her challenge. and so her threatened this really isn't trying to bait president trump. her threat is her joe biden record and she was a copilot to his administration's. so whether it's immigration inflation, or these wars abroad, she was there, afghanistan, she was the last one in the room when president biden made the disastrous exit in afghanistan, she owns a lot of bad things. and when try to talk about the economy the
4:39 am
problem that harris has about talking the economy and talking about record job growth is nobody believes it. turning on the switch when we were during covid and letting people go back to their original jobs is not job growth in the fact that they're still trying to sell that just shows how disingenuous they are to the american people. >> the job growth numbers are there, though. if you look at them, economists are saying yes, the economy is good, but people are frustrated with the prices. and that seems to be the sticking point there. so we will hear plenty. i think about the economy during this debate, it is the number one issue who for americans bryan lanza and julie roginsky. thank you both so much. appreciate it. and follow cnn for complete coverage and exclusive analysis before and after this historic debate on abc presidential debates simulcast here on cnn 9:00 p.m. eastern. don't miss it. take new this morning, georgia investigators have now released body camera footage from an encounter last year with the teenager accused in the deadly school shooting last week, the video shows sheriffs

4:41 am
2023, neighboring county, jackson county was sent to this home after an fbi tip. they were able to trap an ip address and they were able to get to the home. now, before this video starts you can hear the dad basically talk about the fact that his son was bullied all the time in school and he was using hunting as a way to sort of make a connection with a sudden said, if this was true that he was going to take the guns away from them, they wouldn't be doing hunting, but take a listen to yourself, watch this video it is bone-chilling say something. maybe i misheard somalia i swear you do use discord he was last time now, this is jackson county, not barrow county, so it's unclear whether or not
4:42 am
anyone from jackson county ever said anything to someone from barrow county, but you can see this building, you add in the fact that the mom was concerned so many people have questions about how to move forward next. >> now we know barrow county schools is going back to school today except for the school where the shooting happened. but as you can imagine, there are parents who are still dealing with the outcomes from this shooting one father talking about his daughter who survived this shooting, but obviously it's still in pain. take a listen a bullet went across her chest and through her arm and then the other side was through her wrist is still in pain. >> shot through the wrist. did a lot of damage. i would heels is just you're going to determine whether or not they need to do anything else or so it's just it's going to be a slow healing process yeah. as you can imagine, kate, a lot of people in this community is still just heartbroken about exactly what happened. but as we look back at this
4:43 am
investigative file plenty of people have questions about what could been done. you obviously understand those questions at this point. >> just hearing from that father and just as we can obviously appreciate, just centimeters, inches from such a different outcome for their family. i mean, do you god and the long road of that. she clearly has a head, ryan. thank you very much. that investigation continues john right. >> new this morning, police have released the body cam video of officers detaining nfl star tyreek hill during a traffic stop just hours before his first game of the season. the video shows for offers sorry, the video shows officers are going to fill over having his window down before they dragged him out of the car, they handcuffed him face down on the ground in an interview with cnn, hill said he was still shell-shocked from the incident i'm not trying to cause a theme because as i let my window down, like people walking by, driving by, they on notice is that it's me and they can start taking pictures and i like i like, i didn't want to
4:44 am
create a scene at all. >> like i just really wanted to get the ticket and then just go on about my way and then just, you know, just have a great sunday, i guess the officers they felt like i wasn't doing it on a time but i will i was doing it. but i mean, i'm i'm i'm still shell-shocked from the man. i'm embarrassed let's get right to cnn's carlos suarez, who is in miami this morning. >> what is the latest on all this? carlos well, john, as you noted in response to all of the attention that this incident has received, the miami-dade police department they released in nearly two hours of body-camera video capturing the encounter between hill and officers. >> now you're about to see parts of that encounter that begin with the officer knocking on the driver's side window of hills sports car. now hill, who was about to turn into the players entrance at hard rock stadium. well, he takes issue with the officer's actions and things. they go down from there. now, what one point? a second, miami dolphins player
4:45 am
who stopped to see what was going on. he is also handcuffed and later let go. here now is some of that body camera i'm a video hipaa down he window down if you win. >> no doubt that he built window down, i'm and i get out of the car i say modified get out of the car get out of the fight right up get out hello who that is, right? you know, but that is not the dolphins star players all right. >> so a police union rep here in south florida said that hill was only detained because he was not cooperative and that he was allowed to leave after he was issued two tickets. now, in
4:46 am
response to all of this, the miami dolphins who by the way, they pay off duty miami-dade police officers to provide security they released a statement that said, what if i wasn't tyre kill is a question that will carry with resounding impact while we commend a miami-dade police department for taking the right and necessary action too quickly release this footage. we also urge them to take equally swift and strong actions against the officers who engaged in such a despicable behavior. john, one last thing out here, the miami-dade police director said that one of the officers that was involved in this incident has been placed on administrative duties while an internal affairs investigation it is now underway. >> a lot of this information coming out very quickly, much more quickly than usual was still so many questions called a suarez. thank you very much for all of that, and i do understand sarah, that we have sports news, including on the last place, new york jets you needed to put that in the winless new york jets now, the heat is real. but you know, at

reviews and recommendations that underscore.com all right, there's a, live look of me and also the national constitution center in philadelphia that is the location of the big debate tonight between former president donald trump and vice president kamala harris with me now is governor maura healey from the commonwealth of massachusetts and a harris campaign surrogate governor. thank you so much for being and with this, as you can imagine everyone's coming out with their advice this morning for both candidates, but for kamala harris columnist thomas friedman, who was one of the first people to call on president biden to leave the race, says that this is what harris should shaye. she should say, quote joe and i got a lot of things right. but we got some things wrong on two in here is what i have learned for my money. freeman says uttering those 23 words or something like them is key for kamala harris to win tuesday's debate against trump. and the election separate herself from biden. what do you think about that?
4:54 am
>> well look i think kamala harris knows exactly what she needs to do tonight. and that's to spell out the very different vision that she and donald trump have for this country kamala harris, as people will see tonight, is for you. she's for the american people. >> donald trump is only for himself. >> i also so thank on policy. she's really going to get into it because first of all, donald trump hasn't said much about policy. there are two things we know about donald trump. he wants to make permanent. the tax cuts for the ultra wealthy, and he wants to ban abortion in all the states, kamala harris, in contrast, wants to cut taxes for the middle class. she wants to make things more affordable, things that americans are really focused on, like housing costs, childcare costs, right? and the differences are going to become really, really clear including her really strong defense of reproductive justice and women's access to abortion, something that americans democrat and republican by the
4:55 am
way, all across this country are behind so you're a former prosecutor. >> if i'm correct. and so is kamala harris. there are a lot of democrats who want to see her go after trump with some of those skills. but matt by i told you there's a lot of advice from the washington post says that that will not land with the independent vote or these swing voters, maybe these republican haley voters who don't like donald trump. he says they are the key group and he says, quote, if you accept this premise, then you understand why growing at trump like a prosecutor would be a truly bone headed strategy. you won't be showing these right-leaning voters i think they don't already know about trump. all you're likely to do instead is flashed the kind of contempt they fear you might harbor for them. so what do you think about that well look, here's what's important and you're right, i was a prosecutor and an attorney general actually served alongside kamala harris. >> what's important when you're a lawyer in the courtroom is your client. and for kamala harris, her client is the american people. she is
4:56 am
going to be the only one on the stage tonight. who's talking directly to the american people? we'll talking to you, right? speaking to real concerns about the high cost of housing and inflation right now and protection of the middle-class and growth of the middle-class continued job growth for example, donald trump, we know, is just going to ramble on, say, a number of incoherent things. maybe say some really crazy and outlandish things, dangerous this thing's but kamala harris, i think using her courtroom skills will stay focused on the case and the case is making the case to the american people about why she is going to be and should be the next commander in chief and president of the united states. i have every confidence in her ability to do that. tonight regardless of the format i know there's also been a lot of talk about format and obviously, i think donald trump was looking for any number of reasons to duck this debate and the deal with the microphones and whether or not they should be muted. his campaign wanted the microphones muted. of course. and so kamala harris
4:57 am
wanted everybody to be able to hear everything. of course, as i think the american people are entitled to hear but she's going to play with whatever format, you know, she's she's given because for her her focus is on us. it's on the american people and speaking directly to them. that's what we're going to see tonight. clear contrast in this race you, you brought up dangerous the new york times has a story i'm sorry, i'm giving you so many quotes this morning, but there was a lot in the papers maggie haberman, jonathan swan, and others write about some of the things that donald trump has been speaking about lately and they write, quote, he's been laying the groundwork to claim that there was large-scale voter fraud. >> if he loses the familiar tactic from 2016 and 2020 playbooks. but this time coupled with threats of prosecution those who may face criminal scrutiny for boarded efforts at election fraud, mr. trump has declared will include election workers, a tech giant, political operatives, lawyers and donors working for his opponent, laying the predicate to basically argue the election if he loses, is not valid. how
4:58 am
dangerous do you think that is? >> oh, very dangerous. and i served as attorney general during the trump presidency. so i know firsthand about this and how dangerous he is to our democracy. and joe speaking to the independents to the swing voters out there this morning speaking of those who maybe haven't made up their minds, i'm with dick cheney when dick cheney says he is going to vote for kamala harris he's doing that because he knows what a threat donald trump is to our democracy. so everything that donald trump has promised make no mistake about it. he would do, he will weaponize the department of justice. he will attack and undermine those who stood against him. he doesn't play by the rules whatsoever. and that's why you see people including many prominent republicans, coming out, joining with folks like me and saying, kamala harris needs to be must be our next president of the united states. donald trump can't be anywhere near
4:59 am
the oval office. >> i do not think anyone in the commonwealth of massachusetts, 15 years ago would have imagined you would be saying one day i'm with dick cheney, massachusetts governor maura healey. thank you so much for being with us the morning. i appreciate it. >> okay. >> very good. point, john. absolutely. we're also following this this morning. we have a new look at the maternal health crisis that continues in the united states. the new data out from the march of dimes shows that more than one in three counties in u.s. do not have a single obstetric clint clinician? no. obgyns available well, cnn's jacqueline howard is looking at this data. she's joining us now. jacqueline, what more are you learning yeah, kate, will these counties where there's no maternity care, they're called maternity care deserts, meaning there's no hospital or birth center offering upset truck care. >> there's no obstetric providers and these counties are home to more than 2 million women of reproductive age and many of them are concentrated in rural areas. and in the south, as you see on your screen here, women living in
5:00 am
maternity care deserts, they're less likely to receive prenatal care and they experience higher rates of preterm birth. kate, so this is the current state of the maternal health crisis in the u.s. right now what factors are there in creating these maternity care deserts we know that we're seeing more hospitals that are shutting down their obstetric units actually, between 2021 and 2022 in every 25 obstetric units were closed in that timeframe, kate and we are seeing a physician it shouldn't workforce shortage right now. >> in this country, but the non-profit march of dimes is calling for action to address this. they say, for instance, we should expand training opportunities for midwives. they call for investments in telehealth to really reach those patients in maternity care desert. so those are just some of the solutions that they're putting forward to really address yes, this kate? >> yeah problem very clear and obvious when you put up that map solution, that's where the focus really needs to be. thank you so much,
