while you're we've noted as soon as kamala harris stepped into the race, the democratic base has been electrifying. folks are super excited, and that is, that joy, that joyful warrior energy that she's bringing to this country. the vision, inspiration, a motivation that's what in fired us that move on to reach out to ben and jerry's and say, hey, let's, let's play into this. let's go to voters were in their own communities and their own daily lives and talk to them about voting and help them make voting plan. and let's root that enjoy because let's face it. our politics left 810 years has been so dire and negative and just not, not joy and i think voters are tired of they're tired of the old politics of your, own. we want
6:01 am
to turn the page and no better way to do it people together in community with one of the most joyful experiences during a scoop of ice cream. these guys, he could tell a fun they are revving great time and just in the last 24 hours since we've launched, we've already registered bad hundred people in the boat and they're reaching out to their friends and family to vote as well. so it's working alright, rahna epting, jerry greenfield in the clearly not lactose intolerant cohen. thank you so much my glass of water that is always needed when you're midpoint thank you, guys a brand new hour of cnn news central starts right now back in court fighting to get out of jail after prosecutors revealed the lengthy indictment against tim and we're now also hearing more from his alleged victims a big day for the fed,
6:02 am
a big day for interest rates, a big day in the fight against flation, how low will the fed go and what it means for you and a secret court battle that could have massive implications for rupert murdoch's media empire in the future. i'm kate bolduan with sara sidner and john berman. this is cnn new central standing by for the first appeal hearing in a felony i get tearing and sex trafficking case against sean combs, the hip hop mogul will be back in court very soon to try to get out of federal detention. >> he was denied bail after prosecutors argued he was a threat. this is what his defense lawyer told kaitlan collins overnight is there any chance sean combs takes a plea deal i don't see it happening. i do not see it happening he
6:03 am
he's he's innocent. i believe he's innocent. i believe he's innocent of the charges. and he is going to go to trial. and i believe he's going to win combs is accused of manipulating threatening, and drugging women in his alleged set cross sex crimes. >> he has denied all the charges. cnn's kara scannell is with us now on what we can expect next, kara yes, john. >> so lawyers will be back in court today, so we'll sean diddy combs, he will be back is sitting before a different judge yesterday. it was a magistrate judge who denied the bail application to today, it will go before the judge who will oversee this trial. now prosecutors say that diddy should remain behind bars, saying that witnesses they've spoken to say hey, that there is that they are scared, that he said that the threat of danger is acute, pointing to the weapons that were seized when they searched diddy's homes in los angeles and miami earlier this year. they also say that they have spoken to more than 50 witnesses and victims to this sexual abuse. they also said that they have dozens of recordings, video
6:04 am
recordings, that they have from diddy's own devices of the sex, the sex parties that were drug-fueled where the women were allegedly forced to engage in sex with diddy and with male prostitutes, often over several days. and that is what they're saying is the strength of the prosecution evidence the reasons why did he could try to flee the country and not appear in future court appearances. now, his attorneys are saying that this is not a sex trafficking case, but this is a relationship, a ten-year relationship, where there was a fight, where there were consensual sex acts that took place, arguing that it is not what the government is making it out to be. that combs has previously had run-ins with the law and he has always attended those court appearances, saying to the judge that they should trust him that he will take this seriously. he came to new york in order to surrender, although he was arrested by 40s on monday night at his hotel room ultimately, it wasn't enough to satisfy the magistrate judge who said that that she
6:05 am
comfortable with any conditions of release because the types of crimes he's accused of happening occur behind closed doors. so even if there is monitoring by pretrial services, is she said she wasn't comfortable with it. now they'll make this case again today before the judge overseeing the case will be up to him to decide whether to grant a combs bail or to keep him behind bars through the duration to list gets to trial, john? >> yeah, it is big. it is a big day for sean combs today. all right. kara scannell. thank you very much, sara. >> all right. to continue the conversation, in addition to the federal charges against sean diddy combs, he is also facing, as you know, a number of civil lawsuits the list filed just last week by former member of danity kane, don richard. she is accusing combs of sexual battery harassment and false imprisonment. she says that she is grateful federal prosecutors are pursuing charges against the music mobile, joining me now, is dawn richard, attorney erik for dali. thank you so much for being here. give us a sense of what it is that your client is
6:06 am
alleging. and when some of this these allegations happened, certainly what's very interesting about what my client has been alleging is that it's strikingly similar to the allegations the indictment that were released the other day allegations such as sex trafficking, forced labor, or these are the cornerstones of our the complaint that we filed the lawsuit he filed against mr. combs and their action actually jarringly similar, almost a mirror in the allegations in the indictment, which is very interesting and sort of validating for the client for ms richard, who's faced a lot of ridicule using her own name, putting that on the public lawsuit when you say she's faced a lot of red kill or is she being threatened? are there what what's happening with her? >> unfortunately, it's something i've seen representing a lot of victims against very high profile individuals is you just see online backlash when someone is as beloved and as popular and even as notorious as someone like mr. combs, you're just going to see backlash. you're just going to see online ridicule anytime someone has the courage to stand up and fight against someone who is
6:07 am
so, so powerful in the industry. >> yeah, we've all seen that awful, awful video of sean combs dragging cassie through the hallway of the hotel in a public place. he's wearing a towel and it's just an awful scene. what does your client know about the relationship between combs and cassie? >> i can say a couple of things you first of all, it was ms ventura's lawsuit and hurt becoming going public that inspire to miss richard to stop suffering in silence and for her to move forward with her lawsuit and certainly that violence and the violence that was witnessed by a lot of people people allegedly is a big part of the lawsuit that we filed. it also very interestingly was a big part of the government's argument yesterday during the arraignment, which i was at in arguing feeling against bail and for detention, they made a big deal and the judge seemed to really take that in her decision to decide that he should be detained pretrial, discussed his radek and violent alleged behavior. >> did she see this violent behavior in-person? we all saw
6:08 am
some of it on video, but was she a witness to some of this? yes, certainly it's certainly alleged in the complaint that there was that she was a witness to the violent behavior and we've all seen that video that is just so jarring and so shocking. >> and so, so disturbing. and it's things like that that have really inspired miss richard to finally come forward and really speak her truth. >> we heard from sean diddy combs attorney. he talked to our kaitlan collins last night and she asked him about the video which comes first denied ever doing any of the allegations against him from it from cassie ventura then when the video came out, he then said this is awful. i'm sorry. cetera. let me let you hear though, how his attorney is couching all of this this is eight years ago, and the prosecutors are talking about him bribing a hotel security worker do as no criminal investigation. >> this was just a matter of personal embarrassment because he and the person then the video we're in the midst of a ten year relationship that was
6:09 am
difficult at times that was toxic at times, but it was mutually so and this whole notion that mr. combs is forcing drugs on someone is just nonsensical and it's going to prove to not be true there is nothing mutual about what is happening in that video that we're saying. but he's arguing this is a ten relationship was volatile and there's nothing there or relationship and domestic violence are not mutually exclusive certainly, me and mr. combs is attorney have far different ideas of what personal embarrassment means. >> what i saw in that video has nothing to do with person personal embarrassment. what i saw in a video was was violent and shocking and disturbing and excusing it that they may have been in a toxic relationship, doesn't excuse it you can be in a toxic relationship. you can be in a loving relationship. and that doesn't mean that domestic violence is in present. and i think everyone who's seen that video probably has a very different opinion of what they saw and what was just described by mr. combs, attorney. >> i'm curious after your client the federal indictment
6:10 am
with these really really serious charges against sean combs. and after she filed her lawsuit was there anything in that indictment that surprised her surprise, you that you had never heard before? >> i think what was most surprising, not necessarily what we hadn't heard before, although there were things we heard during the arraignment, but what was so striking was how similar they were. there really almost a mirroring of the allegations what was really surprising was during the arraignment when it was revealed by the prosecutors that mr. combs the day after we filed our the day we filed our lawsuit, fall, the four days following had contacted one of the witnesses mentioned in our lawsuit, had 120 28 phone contacts with that witness, who then four days later made a statement that was contrary to some of the allegations in the complaint that was shocking, that was jarring 128 phone contacts that after the witness made the statement, not a single phone contact after for mr. combs, and that was one of the primary arguments they made accusing him of intimidating pressuring witness it says that
6:11 am
was the basis for their argument for detention. >> well, so you're saying he contacted a witness in new york case and call that person 128 times. and this is what the court is looking at, in part, to say that we can't let him out of jail because he might intimidate witnesses, other witnesses, all the witnesses, if he can exactly within the four days after falling our complaint, there were 128 phone contacts between this way witness that was mentioned in our complaint and mr. combs. this is according to the government and then not a single contact after that witness gave a statement publicly. >> all right erica dali. thank you so much for coming on, explaining in your case. and we will probably be talking to you again in the near future. appreciate it. thank you okay. >> donald trump is in battleground. in battleground, michigan and donald trump making vague he promises to try to win over the auto industry the impact of that. >> we have it, and the big announcement coming from the fed to cut interest rates for the first time. since the pandemic. what does this mean for you and the fight against stubborn inflation? solitary

6:17 am
big deal in states like new york, even though republicans back in 2017, when he was president kept that deduction to offset the cost of other tax cuts in michigan yesterday, trump made another big promise that he will put a 200% tariff on car imports coming from mexico if he's reelected used to be the capital of the world and cars. today you're an afterthought in cars. we are going to bring so many auto plants into our dunn you're going to be as big or bigger than you were 50 years ago because they won't be able not willing to build a plant. we don't want their product and that's enough now, democratic congressman dan kildee of michigan, he was in flint. >> you represent an our from flint congressmen trump promised among a lot he's gonna bring so many auto plants back to the state. but he didn't reveal a plan other than that 200% tariff. i was just talking about also said, if he doesn't
6:18 am
win, there will be zero car jobs manufacturing jobs. if he is not elected or either of those two things possible well, let's sort of fact check the president, the former president in 2016, he said the very same thing that he's going to bring all the auto factories back to michigan, back to the united states we lost manufacturing jobs. >> he was president for four years and he lost those manufacturing jobs. joe biden as president has been the one to bring them back. but let's fact check him again in 2020 when he was running against president biden, he said that if biden won, there would be no more manufacturing shrink we've added manufacturing jobs even in my hometown of flint when trump was president, we lost 5,700 jobs in flint, manufacturing jobs with joe biden. we gained 11,000. so look, this is a familiar
6:19 am
promise a promise that he broke when he was president in a promise that joe biden actually kept. we have grown manufacturing jobs in the united states and we've grown auto jobs in the united states. so he's living in his alternative universe. and i guess we're just going to have to hear him say these things over and over again, even if basis even if not true does it concern you that they will successfully work to persuade voters? does that concern you you know, there is a cohort of the electorate that believes anything donald trump says. >> and what i've been telling my friends as we wage this campaign those folks will believe what he says. we have to appeal to the people who are actually thinking about these issues, who are actually open to conversation. so let the trumps, there's just let them have their, their fake world. we need to really address the voters who are honestly thinking about the future and then ask them a simple question measure the biden-harris record
6:20 am
against the trump record with trump, we lost jobs with biden and harris. we gained jobs more than we lost if we want to continue on the path toward growing our economy by investing in manufacturing, we need to elect kamala harris if we want to go back to this angry and failed presidency of donald trump i don't think people are going to make that choice. let's put it that way. >> let me ask you about this. very relevant in michigan and beyond the teamsters labor union president has said that they could announce an endorsement if there is going to be an endorsement coming as soon as today? a top trump surrogate was on a member of republican member of congress is on with me yesterday and said that if trump wins the endorsement of the teamsters, it's going to be game set, match the election will be finished do you agree with that assessment no, i don't because first of all, i don't know what the teamsters will do. >> i do know this that because
6:21 am
of president joe biden and vice president kamala harris, there are tens of thousands of teamsters that we're going to lose their pensions that now have those pensions secured but those individual members are going to make up their own decision based on who they think serves them best. in no matter what. and i don't know what they'll do that fact at least in my home state of michigan, is not lost on union members particularly teamsters, who have their pensions restored because of biden and harris donald trump never did anything to fix that problem so since the second assassination attempt on trump's life, congressman he and his running mate, j.d. >> vance they have in other republicans. they have made it very coordinated effort and messaging effort to, they are blaming those attacks on rhetoric and words coming from kamala harris, joe biden, and other democrats towards donald trump and how they've talked about donald trump for years call this specifically pointing to the calls that he is a threat to say which led me to asking congressman byron
6:22 am
donalds for a gut check yesterday listen to this in terms of rhetoric. do you think do you think donald trump than the trump campaign? do you think they have a problem with rhetoric as well? >> no i don't i think especially in light of the fact that there has now been a second assassination attempt on the life of president trump. i do not believe so. what we are seeing now is that you do have radical elements of the democrat party to that? and this general conversation about toning down the rhetoric something you and i've talked about for years yeah, i mean first of all, i believe we need to tone down the rhetoric in american political dialogue. i also think there's no place in this country for political violence. but let's just be clear, if anyone is engaging in you know caustic
6:23 am
over the last eight years. my god, it's donald trump but goodness sake. i mean, i'm all of us are victims of political violence. i was in the capitol on january 6, that was political violence whipped up by donald trump. and now since celebrated by donald trump. so like to deranged individuals motivated by whatever went after donald trump, that's horrific. we can't accept that but the idea that donald trump and his surrogates are saying that it's democrats who are engaging in this dangerous political speech when we have seen donald trump call members of the media your industry the enemy of the people i mean, my goodness, we really have to fact check this guy and all of his surrogates because typically what they do is accused their opponents of the very actions that they continue to take to try to deflect from any criticism and i assume that
6:24 am
that's what representative donalds was doing. i don't know where he gets his facts, but it's a different set of facts than what most people have seen congressman, thank you for coming in. >> important. congressman dan kildee from battleground state and great state, michigan. thank you. john are the federal reserve set to announce a cut to interest rates for the first time in years. what it means for you and your wallet. and a real-life succession battle for control, playing out in nevada courtroom, group of murdoch caught up in a family dispute media empire i-billion dollar birth, mono warner facility was overwhelming. the idea that this fictional character play any role in politics is bananas db on the edge, moments that shaped our culture premieres sunday at nine on cnn. >> if they one knows, halloween is all about black and

saturday's game on tnt just hours from now, a major decision from the federal reserve officials are expected to announce the first rate cut since 2020, a major milestone in their fight against inflation to question on everyone's mind though, is how low will they go? cnn, business anchor julia chatterley is joining us now, this has been a longtime coming what are you expecting? >> it's endless. the first rate cut in four years, the most talked about cut, i think ever at least by me. and yet we don't know what they're going to do. this is so unique for so many reasons. unless at this moment, think they'll do a quarter of a percentage point, investors far more optimistic, they see a way bigotry thomas of a half a percentage point. khan so either way, the key today's what jay powell says. he's going to have to justify whatever he does. he's going to talk about the jobs market.
6:30 am
he's going to talk about inflation. but the key for me today, more importantly, to your point about how low they can go. where did they see interest rates ending up? because ultimately that's what matters for us. it matters for him money it matters for america's borrowers. and that's going to filter into all the things that we spend our money on in our lives. credit cards is a great example. it is going to impact credit cards and it happens quite quickly. the problem is the average new rate on a credit card right now, 25% that's mind-blowing ever they do today, you're rates still going to be 20 in t4, 0.9%. this is the most expensive way of borrowing wanting. >> next one, mortgages. >> we've already seen mortgages for too what, 18 month lows. so it is improving the situation already just by what they're saying. it doesn't help with the price of homes, of course, and that's the other kicker. auto loans, super-expensive. we've seen prices on cars come down but again, it will trickle in, but this depends on your credit history. it depends on what you're buying, of course, too. so there's caveats all the way through the question is
6:31 am
ultimately i think what they do and how much they can cut overall. and that's going to impact the cost of all of these things. >> what advice would you give to consumers? great question savers, this is your moment. if you haven't locked in and you have some money to invest in best now, cds, for example, a savings low because you can lock in a high rate, it's above inflation. borrowers, you've got to shop around. rates are going to come down, watch the fees on all of the things that you're doing and credit cards don't necessarily go to the big banks. look at some of the smaller institutions because they can offer better credit card rates and think about consolidation as well. perhaps a zero balance transfer but watch the fees we'll see a 2pm he's can kill you. yeah. you're really, really high. >> this bowl print. >> all right, we are chatterley what's, what some good news and that's important to the sentiment impact today is really important beyond what comes next. it's been four years of pain, hasn't it for people?
6:32 am
>> i personally house the race, bring them down, right? and we chatterley. thank you so much. >> already, republican governor sarah huckabee sanders going after kamala harris apparently for not having any biological children. and paul whelan says that he counted each and every single day of the 5.5 years that he spent detained in russia he's now speaking out about what he endured while also thanking the political leaders who helped get him home the polls for head, i got news for you are pretty odd yeah. what are the kinds we could run out the news before then? >> i would never happen for i got news for you saturday at nine on cnn and streaming next day on max. >> it won't be hard to find someone to six. this but before i started, angie's list, different story. a lot has changed for us to dng since then. but the issues facing homeowners are the same and the solution to skill local well

los angeles in this is cnn new controversy this morning after comments made by the republican governor of arkansas, sarah huckabee sanders. she was onstage with donald trump in michigan so my kids keep me humble harris doesn't have anything keeping her humble. >> here now is patti solis doyle, former campaign manager for hillary clinton, in and shermichael singleton, cnn political commentator, and republican strategist patty first few, this wasn't some radio interview that j.d. vance did years ago. this was last night in michigan, which makes you think it's a set piece which makes you think it's intentional. why? >> i don't know why honestly, look, there's a huge gender gap in this election with kamala harris winning women voters by double digits, high

double digits so, you know, sarah huckabee sanders remarks were not only in my view, not very nice, but not very smart we have seen this childless cat lady meme out there in the zeitgeist, and it's not working for the trump campaign at all. so i don't know what she was thinking. i don't it clearly was intentional. i don't know why women voters are going to decide this race in about seven states and like i said, it's going to be very, very close. so why they would alienate those voters is beyond me. and also one more thing, the name is kamala, not kamala. and i think she deserves the respect to pronounce her name correctly shermichael, there are a lot of republicans and independents out there without kids. >> so i imagine can vote yellow.
6:39 am
>> i don't think this is helpful. i mean, you're in the state of michigan. i think the messaging in that state should be about working class voters. i think the messaging in the state of michigan should be about the conflict between israel and hamas. a lot of voters, they are concerned, particularly younger voters and muslim voters. and so there's an opportunity john articulate a message that could be compelling enough to mobilize an energized as republicans there, you need to maintain that. you also need to probably pull away at least five of the 6% of the small percent of overall voters in the state, that sort of undecided. and i'm not certain that this is the message that's going to move them into your corner, at least. let them stay home. so there's not voting for your opponent. i don't think this helps. >> so my friend peter hamby, who writes for pocket and dust up for snapchat, has called this the joe rogan taylor swift election and democrats online the last 24 hours have been circulating this clip of joe rogan in here his podcast, where it came after the debate was recorded the day after the debate, i think at first aired on monday, he talks favorably
6:40 am
about parts of harris, his debate performance, and also talks about what she's been like as a candidate. listen to this whoever's helping her, whoever's coach in her, whoever's the puppet master run the strings yeah. amazing job. a job. they did an amazing job from the moment biden drops out, forcing biden to drop out whatever they're doing, whoever's writing those speeches, getting her deliver him, coaching her she's nailing it. she nailed that one speech to say say it to my face cheer that she nailed it, dude now, to be clear, michael and joe rogan's not supporting kamala harris. i don't think he's coming out and supporting any candidate directly, but what kind of an impact do you think something like this has particularly on younger male voters? >> i mean, look, i think joe rogan can be objective i'm a conservative, i can be objective and look at the way
6:41 am
democrats are running their campaign. i have all slew of differences in terms of policies and philosophy, right? but as a strategist from an operational perspective, how quick they were able to consolidate the maximum amount of dollars raised it's how they have increased energy and they've increased the number of volunteers. those are all very positive things, whether you're republican or democrat, if you've ran a campaign and and patty can also speak to this. i don't think there's a strategy that was hit. those are bad things in terms of the overall impact. i think this is sort of a signal to the former president that you're not running against. joe biden. you're running against a formidable candidate. and if you're going to win this thing, then you are going to have to be disciplined in terms of your message and stay focus on what is most important and consequential to voters, particularly those who are not a part of the maga crowd who the former president will need in order to get this thing across the finish line. >> patti, what did you see there well, i couldn't agree more. >> i couldn't agree more with joe rogan. i couldn't agree more with shermichael she
6:42 am
looked she has been flawless in my view. i have run campaigns and she has been flawless in the night nine weeks that she has been in this race but i just want to make perfectly clear to all the voters out there. this is going to be incredibly, incredibly close excruciating request and the real bottom line is to get those voters out to vote on election day. and prior to election day with the mail-in vote and early the voting happening as we speak. >> so what's important is not just her external strategy. >> what she says, how she says it, where she goes, but what is happening on the ground. and we'll see how that works on on november 5, shermichael, your site that donald john to the swing state of new york tonight is so funny, you mentioned that because i was going to point on something that patty said about early voting and staying on
6:43 am
message. >> if i were advising the former president, i'm looking at a place like pennsylvania and north carolina. i think some of the data suggests is now more competitive place. i'm figuring out where the competition is i'm looking at 20:16 numbers. i'm looking at 20:20 numbers on figuring out where some of the vice president's struggles are. and if i'm advising trump, what is the message that i need to hone in on and hit over and over and over again to penetrate to i think the 16th percent of undecided pennsylvania yes. to say, i am a better option, then my opponent paddies, right? this is going to be very, very close race, perhaps even closer than 2020. so maybe you're looking at jon, a 2% marginal difference. and again, a state like pennsylvania that could make the difference. both candidates are going to be fighting for that 2% can you make a convincing enough arguing? you meant that you're the better option than the other person. people always say voters don't care about policy. i don't actually agree with that. the data suggests otherwise and the person who provides the best solution in terms of policy to move the country forward is a person who i believe will ultimately win
6:44 am
as they say it all comes down to turnout and long island, patti solis doyle shermichael singleton. >> thank you one before. i think it was. yeah for the first time since his release, american marine veteran paul whelan is revealing what happened in his final days in a russian prison it was five years, seven months, and five days. >> i counted each one of them the last five days i was in solitary confinement i couldn't leave myself, but i made it home. >> i went toe to toe with them they were probably glad to see me leave to be quite honest but here i am and i'm starting a new chapter of my life well, who is wrongfully detained for 5.5 years, was released last month. >> but really speaking publicly for the first time yesterday, joining us now is cnn's jennifer hansler. and to remind everyone you have spoken to paul whelan numerous times over
6:45 am
the years through phone calls you've been able to stay in touch some of our best reporting out of there has been coming from you, jennifer, what else is he saying now? >> well, kate, he said it is great to be back, but there is still a lot of work to be done and he is focusing on what he called the minutia, things like getting a new car, readjusting to life with his parents after being in russian detention for 5.5 years now, i asked him what the most surprising part of readjusting to his life here has been. and he said it is navigating the technology, just how much has changed over the years he was detained in part of why that's such an adjustment for him. he said is because of how remote and how old historic this prison camp he was held in. they were not really any technology there. this is how he described it was in a really remote part of russia, i used to call it campbell austin the woods. >> i mean, it was really remote we really didn't have much the

conditions will for the russian said the poor conditions were part of the punishment. and coming back to see this sort of thing now is a bit of a shock, but it's a good shot. >> whelan was up on capitol hill last night, kate, to meet with lawmakers. thank those who had advocated for his release and to say thank you as well to the us government officials who worked on that sweeping prisoner exchange, who that brought him i'm home. he said that part of how he was able to get through those years and those final days when he was in isolation was because he was brought up with this sense of resiliency from his parents who had lived in england during world war ii. and he said that was instilled with him and it was sunk something he put to work every single day. now, kate, from a personal note, as you said, it's able to speak with him a number of times when he was there in that prison camp. so it was really quite a moment to be able to speak with him free on us soil. kate i can only imagine it's great to see him and hear from him. and

know that we've set the worst things. >> but i just wanted to get a few things straight. >> dad said that it would be me if we want to hold onto this company for us we have to go into battle with their own version of the future with the king it's hbo's succession playing out in real life, really, rupert murdoch family feud in a secret legal battle that could determine the future of his media empire. cnn's brian stelter is learning more about this. he's joining us now. brian has also the author of network of lies about fox news that is now now out in paperback congrats on that. brian, what is happening here? and what is going to happen this month in this nevada courtroom, like bring us up to speed here yeah this is even more dramatic than hbo's succession because this is a family been ripped apart over the terms of a trust that governs how the billions of dollars and the hearts of the
6:53 am
murdoch media empire are going to be split up in the future. >> basically 25 years ago, rupert murdoch set up this family trust that said, in the event of his death, his four oldest children, what each have a vote in the future of the companies, of course, this company owns the wall street journal, fox news, new york post, and assets around the world the idea was that the four children together would decide what to do with the family business. but now rupert murdoch is in court right now in reno, nevada, fighting all this week to blow up the trust that he created to change the rules, and to put his oldest son, laughlin, in charge, essentially, kate, he does not trust his other children to run the companies the future. he only trusts his son, lochlan. and so there's this crazy court battle now underway completely in secret. the only thing we know about it is that we see the murdochs walking in and out of court every day for these hearings. >> or maybe he doesn't trust is they other children to run the empire the way he wants? what could this mean for his
6:54 am
media empire way he wants. >> i report in this updated version of network of lies that james murdoch, the more liberal younger son has detailed plans for making fox news more moderate. in james's view, fox news as it stands today, is poisonous, spreading pro-trump propaganda and misinforming the country. james wants to make fox news more moderate. he had a plan or has a plan to do so, but he would need the support of his sisters in other words, if there's four votes, it will be three against one. and he could take over fox news after his dad dies that seems to be what rupert murdoch is trying to stop. that seems to be what this court battle is all about. the rupert murdoch camp says that this battle is about ensuring that laughlin can take care of the best interests of all of the family members, making sure everybody stays rich and wealthy and becomes, becomes stays billionaires but for, from james murdoch's point of view, this is all political. in other words, kate, it's both political and personal at the same time. >> i mean, this is a business
6:55 am
story and immediate story. a un also a story about a family. i mean, what, what? you've done so much reporting on this, what could this mean for this family i mentioned james and laughlin, the two brothers. >> they've not spoken in years. these two men use to work together running the family business. now, they're estranged rupert murdoch got married again earlier this year, and the three kids who were fighting him in court didn't come to the wedding. so on one level, there's a person so no heartbreak here, about a 93-year-old father go into war with his children who won't speak with them or vice versa. but then on the political level, what happens to fox news and what happens to the wall street journal affects everyone that by the way, why the nation's other media outlets are trying to go to court to fight to get access to this hearing because whatever a probate judge reno, nevada decides could affect these media companies, not just for years to come, but for decades to come absolutely. >> ryan, great reporting. thank you very much. much more to come on that one for sure. >> and thank you for joining
